Edolia

<<OOC: I have decided to run these elections differently than most people. Instead of either just making up the results myself or letting the general populace of NS decide, I'm going to allow the community to influence the populace of Edolia. Then I will come up with 80% of the votes and allow you, the people, to decide on the rest. Edolia as a country is a good deal more liberal than the general NS community and the way that most people here would vote would definetely not match up to the way Edolians vote.
Preliminary campaigning is going on now. Elections will take place in one year [NST].>>
A few background notes on Edolian law: While Edolia is called a "Libertarian Police State" by the United Nations, the official governmental form of Edolia is a "Dynastic Socialist Parlaimentary Republic." The Imperator of Edolia serves as something of a President-for-Life while the democratically elected Parlaiment (led by the Chancellor) acts as a legislative assembly and appoints judges. Political parties are completely dependent on government funding for their survival and are banned from receiving donations so any involvement by foreign countries would have to be done indirectly and discretely. There are 500 seats in Parlaiment. And now for the parties:
Edolian Communist Party: The largest party of Edolia, the Communist Party has the official backing of Imperator. Receiving 23.4% of the popular vote in the last elections, it heads up the majority coalition The Communist Party, for the most part, wants to protect the status quo but is not completely adverse to change. They are social libertarians but economically quite far left. Many members of the Communist Party recently helped to push through a popular proposal drastically cutting governmental spending and increasing the wages of citizen-workers. The legislation also relaxed restrictions of mass-ownership, encouraging the creation and management of communes. The President of the Edolian Communist Party, Jeni von Roth, is also Edolia's Chancellor.
Edolian Socialist Party: Despite its name, the Edolian Socialist Party leads up the more conservative of the two coalitions. Liberal members of British Labour or the American Democratic Party would find themselves at home with the Socialists. They tend not to disagree so much with the Communist Party but support economic reforms. In the last elections, the Socialist Party pulled in 21.6% of the popular vote.
Edolian Imperial Party: The secondary member of the majority coalition, the Imperial Party doesn't have a political platform per se but generally supports the Imperator in all decisions. Operating under the principle that the von Blatterschplitt family has ruled Edolia well for the plast two hundred years, its membership fluxuates with the popularity of the Imperator. Because of the current Imperator's political views, the Imperial Party backs the Communists on almost all issues. In the last elections, they received 18.1% of the popular vote.
The Christian-Capitalist Coaltion: The largest "conservative" party in Edolia, the Christian-Capitalists tend to be the unwilling lackies of the Socialist. British Tories or American Republicans would find themselves quite at home with the Christian-Capitalists. They tend to espouse a tightening of social mores, as well as a return to a capitalist sytem. The Christian-Capitalist Coalition is the largest majory party to openly challenge the Imperator's right to rule the country. In the last elections, they received 12% of the popular vote.
The Freedom Party: The name, for the most part, says it all. Advocating an almost completely dismantling of the Edolian state, the Freedom Party is economically and socially extremely liberal. Though they frequently change their coalition alleigance depending on whether or not they support social or economic liberality, in general, the Freedom Party is a member of the Socialist Coalition. In the last election, they received 7.8% of the popular vote though the numbers are expected to be a good deal higher this election due to corruptiong charges five years that damaged public relations.
The Red Flag Party: The Red Flag Party broke off from the Communists five years ago over foreign policy disputes. The only party to openly condemn the spending reforms passed last year, the Red Flag Party embraces a militant position and advocates an aggressive campaign to overthrow capitalist oppressors everywhere. Besides their different foreign policy, the Red Flag Party supports the Communists in almost every domestic issue and is a member of the majority coalition. In the last election, the Red Flag Party received 7.5% of the vote.
The Green Party: The Green Party is similar ideologically to the Communist Party but tends to emphasize environmental protection over other issues. The only party in Edolia given a favorable environmental rating by Greenpeace, the Green Party is a member of the majority coalition. In the last elections, they received 5.3% of the vote.
There are another dozen parties that received less than 1% of the popular vote each. During the last election, minor parties that supported the majority Communist Coalition received 1.2% to the 3.1% received by minor Socialist Coalition supporters.
Breakdown of the Last Elections:
Edolian Communist Party (C): 23.4% --117 MPs
