Election results: conservatives win and become biggest party
Knootoss

*A pompous news tune is played accompanied by the usual spinning globe.
The names of important cities fly by. Jerusalem - Amsterdam - Mönchengladbach – Hofburg, etc*
KNN is projected onto the spinning world.
A female news-anchor presents the news, dressed in purple for the occasion.
“You’re watching KNN, live with an extra edition on the first election polls. The results of counting 94 percent of the votes are in, including all the major cities. The other 6 percent were done by non-electronic voting. The results could still change by a seat or so, but not much.
Remember, there were two elections today: one for the Prime Minister and one for parliament. These are coinciding because due to the shadow war both a new parliament and a prime minister had to be elected at the same time. We now go to the studio, Orodreth?
An Elvish presenter stands before a large blue backdrop used to project tables and figures on.
“Thank you, Mirjam. Lets get to the results shall we?”
He steps aside leaving room for the statistics to be displayed:
“It appears the liberals have taken a severe beating in this election, losing a total of seven seats, holding on to only 63 SLP seats out of a total of 200."
A purple bar is shown, falling sharply.
“The greens have also not been doing too well, apparently losing votes to the new socialist party. The loss of three seats brings them down to 62 seats, just under their SLP coalition partners.”
A green bar is projected next to the bar, falling slightly.
“The RCPK is the big winner of these election, gaining an unprecedented eleven seats. This brings them to 69 seats, making them the biggest party in the DDR for the first time in modern history.”
A blue bar raises sharply, outgrowing the other bars projected so far.
“This seems to be going at the expense of the Elves though, the Knootian Elvish Party apparently isn’t getting the Elvish vote losing six seats, with one remaining.
A yellow bar falls down until it is a mere stripe.
“The new Socialist Party is gaining though, getting four seats out of the blue they have outgrown the KEP”
A red bar rises out of nothing. Not very high though.
“The new Imperialist Party also seems to have made its mark. It gains a single seat in parliament.”
The screen splits into four, showing the initial reactions of the party congresses huddled together in various halls.
In the upper left the SLP corner can be seen. The people are petrified, in obvious horror as they have been put out of power for the first time in most peoples memory. Some people gasp, one candidate MP has red eyes. Prime minister van der Laan has her hands clasped to her mouth.
In the upper-right corner the feelings are much the same. The camera centres on a disappointed Femke Halsema; not fully ready to accept that this will most certainly mean opposition for her party.
In the bottom-left corner the conservatives are shown: men and women in business suits are toasting and celebrating. The women are exchanging kisses, the men handshakes. Everyone is centering around a certain well-known elf to congratulate her.
In the bottom-right corner is a hall completely draped in red colours, hammer and sickle flags waved around. The socialists are celebrating.
The screen shifts back, displaying the results again:
[code:1:8c0b506a32]
SLP_: Sociaal-Liberale Partij____ : 70 ______ -7 ________63
KGP_: Knootiaanse Groene Partij__ : 65 ______ -3 ________62
RCPK: Realistische Cons.Partij Kn.: 58 ______ +11 _______69
KEP_: Knootiaanse Elven Partij___ : 7 _______ -6 ________1
SP__: Socialistische Partij______ : 0 _______ +4 ________4
IP__: Imperialistische Partij____ : 0 _______ +1 ________1[/code:1:8c0b506a32]
Orodreth steps into the picture again, hiding his emotions professionally:
“Now lets review the results for the election for Knootian Prime Minister. It was a close call, as the final polls indicated a race between Mrs. Van der Laan and Lady nos Cirdan. Voters from both sides of the political spectrum have been rallying to these candidates.
The ruling prime minister, Lousewies van der Laan, managed to get 40% percent of the votes. Votes from other, smaller parties have been going to her as the race got closer.
Her competitor from the conservative RCPK, however, managed to get a bit more votes. Galadriël Táralóm nos Cirdan received 41% of the voted counted.
Femke Halsema’s bid suffered from this race, and this reflects in the results: just 18% for the green leader. Other candidates together received less then one percent of the vote.
It is now likely that Lady nos Cirdan will become the new Prime Minister of Knootoss as her party has already become the biggest in parliament. While contrary to custom, it is however possible for Mrs. Van der Laan to contest this and not step down her candidacy. This would mean a second round. We hope get commentary on this later on."
But first, lets listen to the address by Galadriël…
((Continues from here: See this thread (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=125677&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)))
A message was sent from Empress Ithenril to Galadriel noss Cirdan,
"I congradulate you on your recent victory. It is wonderfull to see these elections take place after the disasterous elections four years ago when Tator rose to power. I deeply congradulate you and offer you any help you need."
In the mean time, Ithenril and Kentherin were sitting back in that same room,
"It payed off Ithenril, Galadriel noss Cirdan has risen to power."
"It is nice, to finally see Knootoss becoming stable."
"Indeed. Do you think that she will step down?"
"Mrs. Van der Laan?"
"Aye"
"She will step down, she will, at least, I hope so."

Galadriëls campaign office was celebrating, but about half an hour later they sent a reply thanking the Thelasi for their support.
((Need sleep desparately. Speech later. Feel free to respond though ;) ))
"Sir. We have the final votes from the Knootian elections in." The Imperator sighed.
"Alright. Hit me."
"It's not so good sir... The conservatives have taken the lead in the elections... and it looks like Galadriels is the new Prime Minister."
"Damn. I understand though, that the liberal parties will still maintain a majority of the seats, correct?"
"It looks like it sir."
"Good. Relations with Knootoss have been improving lately. We don't want them to be destroyed by a bunch of reactionaries."
"No sir."
"Get me a line to the Knootian embassy... I want to congratulate their new Prime Minister. I may not like her, but Knootoss is one of our closest allies. It wouldn't be seemly of us not to give our congratulations."

"Sir, results from the elections in Knootoss are in, and the Imperialist Party has gained a seat in their Parliment." An aid reported to the Emporer.
Emporer Alexander I Larsen nodded in understanding, "Good, that means we can safely support the IP during the next elections without alienating one of our allies. Next time, pay for adds out of our own pocket and give the IP money as well."
"Yes, sir." The aid answered and retreated from the office.

The top officials of the Tanah Burung foreign ministry were gathered to attempt to make sense of the mixed Knootian election results. The electorate had clearly lurched to the right, but it was anyone's guess who would hold power once the dust had settled.
"The RCPK is the largest party now, bugt it looks like the government coalition still has the votes to remain in power if they want," Constancio Matebian reported. "It seems like they need two of the three big parties to form a government, and the SLiPpery SLP gets to choose who they want to govern with."
Violeta Bi Bere sat looking disappointed. "I wish there's something we could have done to help the Greens. I fear what those conservatives may do."
"I assume they'll seek a RCPK-SLP coalition with Galadriel as Prime Minister," Constancio replied.
Bi Bere shuddered at the thought. "Is she definitely the PM, then?"
"It's hard to say. Van der Laan can contest it, but i can't see her doing that unless the SLP is sticking with the Greens to keep that warmongering elf out of power. Should we send the standard message of congratulations?"
"No. No congratulations of any sort to any candidate, for now."

Meanwhile back in Knootoss
---------------------------------------------
The KNN camera captures the party conference as Galadriël comes on to the stage, beaming. She grabs the mike and says simply:
“Friends – we won.”
She pauses, and waits for a roaring applause. When the applause dies out, she continues:
“Friends - I am very proud of our party tonight. This victory has shown that there is a future for realistic conservatism in Knootoss. I’ll be up front with you: I want the RCPK to head a coalition with the SLP and I want to become the next Prime Minister of this country!”
She is again overwhelmed by much cheering.
”More than anything else, I want my candidacy to unify our country; to renew the Knootian spirit and sense of purpose. I want to carry our message to every Knootian, regardless of party affiliation. Today, most votes were given to conservative MP’s, and most votes were given to a conservative Prime Minister. The parties that headed the last coalition have lost. The voters have spoken, it is now time for the politicians to listen.
Can anyone look at the record of the last government and say, "Well done?" Can anyone compare the state of our economic growth when the SLP-KGP coalitions took power with where we are today and say, "Keep up the good work?" Can anyone look at our reduced standing in the world today and say, "Let's have four more years of this?"
I believe the Knootian people have answered this question today with a firm "No--we've had enough." And, now it is up to us to offer a coalition of competence and more than a little courage.
It is time for the RCPK and the SLP to take charge. I will not stand by and watch this great country destroy itself under mediocre leadership that drifts from one crisis to the next, eroding our national will and purpose.
Together, let us make this a new beginning. Let us pledge to restore, in our time, the Knootian spirit of voluntary service, of cooperation, of private and community initiative; a spirit that flows like a deep and mighty river through the history of our nation.”
During the next wave of applause, the first foreign journalists begin to transmit their messages: “Galadriël claims post of Prime Minister – wants to head RCPK/SLP coalition”
“I will not accept the excuse that the bureaucracy has grown so big and powerful that it is beyond the control of any Prime Minister, any coalition. We are going to put an end to the notion that the Knootian taxpayer exists to fund the government. The government exists to serve the Knootian people.
From today onward I want to form a coalition to get substantial relief for our taxpaying citizens. None of this will be based on any new form of monetary tinkering or fiscal sleight-of-hand. We must change the way people pay taxes: no longer should we have income tax but instead we should have people pay for what they cost our society. No longer should we punish work.
Knootoss's defence strength is just coming back from its lowest ebb in a generation, while other nations are vastly outspending us in both strategic and conventional arms.
Our allies, looking nervously at the growing menace from the evil coalitions, turn to us for help and fail to find it. Who does not feel a growing sense of unease as our allies, facing repeated instances of an amateurish and confused government, reluctantly conclude that Knootoss is unwilling or unable to fulfil its obligations as a member of the free world?
Who does not feel rising alarm when the question in any discussion of foreign policy isn’t, "Should we do something?", but "Do we have the capacity to do anything?"
I want a coalition that ends this weakness, indecision, mediocrity and incompetence.
It is the responsibility of the Prime Minister of the Dutch Democratic Republic, in working for peace, to insure that the safety of our people cannot successfully be threatened by a hostile foreign power. As Prime Minister, fulfilling that responsibility will be my number one priority.
We are not a warlike people. Quite the opposite. We always seek to live in peace. We resort to force infrequently and with great reluctance--and only after we have determined that it is absolutely necessary. We are awed--and rightly so--by the forces of destruction at loose in the world in this nuclear era. But neither can we be naive or foolish. Countless times in my lifetime Knootoss has gone to war. We know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak. It is then that tyrants are tempted.
We simply cannot learn these lessons the hard way again without risking our destruction.
Of all the objectives we seek, first and foremost is the establishment of lasting world peace. We must always stand ready to negotiate in good faith, ready to pursue any reasonable avenue that holds forth the promise of lessening tensions and furthering the prospects of peace. But let our friends and those who may wish us ill take note: the Dutch Democratic Republic has an obligation to its citizens and to the people of the world never to let those who would destroy freedom dictate the future course of human life on this planet. I would regard my election as proof that we have renewed our resolve to preserve world peace and freedom. This nation will once again be strong enough to do that.
This evening marks the last step--save one--of a campaign that has taken me from one end of this great land to the other, over many months. The time is now to say that while we shall seek new friendships and expand and improve others, we shall not do so by breaking our word or casting aside old friends and allies.
And, the time is now to redeem promises once made to the Knootian people by another candidate, in another time and another place.
The time is now, my fellow Knootians, to recapture our destiny, to take it into our own hands…"
After another applause she steps off the stage.

((Though an odd time, Galadriel is now available for questions by the press, and so are Lousewies van der Laan (SLP) and Femke Halsema (KGP) at their congresses respectively.
SLP IC response will be later. Tanah Burung analysed the situation perfectly, really. No need to repeat that so thanks. :) The dilemma for the SLP: 't would be undemocratic to ignore the largest party and form a coalition with the two losing ones. However going with the greens gives them a shot at getting the PM. Publicly going with the greens and then losing the elections for prime minister to Galadriel however would be disastrous. IC and OOC Advice is welcome. ))

Lady Galadriel,
My personal congratulations on your recent success in the Knootian elections. Your reputation proceeds you, even to Proxima, and I hope that you will remain a welcomed addition to our friends in the international community for sometime to come. Between the skills of Madam Van der Laan and yourself, I can only dream of where the Knootian people will soon find themselves in their near future.
However, I do have something of a hidden purpose for contacting you. It would be my utmost pleasure and honor if you would join me for a private dinner at the Valinor embassy to Knootoss. I realize that immediately you have other concerns and duties to your people, your party, and the details of your campaign, but I have some other business that I must attend to on Earth before coming to Knootoss. Perhaps six days from hence you could accept my invitation?
Yours with congratulations,

A Thelasi reporter stands, he is an elf, he talks in a heavily Sindarin accented Dutch, "Lady Galadriel, is this going to effect Thelasi-Knootian relations? Do you intend to stay a member in the Accord of Leiden?"
Another reporter stands, also from Thelas, he speaks in almost perfect Dutch, a slight almost un-noticable German accent, "Lady Lousewies van der Laan, do you intend to step down?"
A top Edolian official, Minister of State Scottford von Harrick, wishes to request a private meeting with top members of the SLP, KGP and SP hierarchy. If possible, the meeting should be kept discreet. Officially, it is to discuss possible changes in Knootian foreign policy.

Mr. Alderman,
Thank you for your congratulations, I am most flattered by your kind words and I assure you that the feelings you expressed are mutual.
In the light of international relations I would ask that this meeting remains low-profile. I will not twist words: some of our Sisgardian allies may not look kindly upon us meeting and as a guardian of the nation I feel I need to weigh all of its interests carefully. It is not so much a matter of preferring either side, as it is a matter of Sisgardian stability. With the GDT on the verge of civil war the favour and inclinations of their people may be vital. This should, hopefully, not impair constructive talks.
Yours in friendship,

RCPK Party Conference
Galadriël looks at her kin, and smiles. The question posed, however, is a precarious one and she answers evadingly: “I value positive relations between Thelas and Knootoss greatly. It is my believe that all nations should strive to be on friendly terms in a free world.
The accord of Leiden is a somewhat more precarious matter. You see, with Thelas being subjugated as a Menelmacari province, and then again made independent with restrictions the situation is legally very complicated. If the pact is still valid we will honour it.”
She eyes the man momentarily, hoping he is satisfied with the question.
SLP Party Conference
Somewhere else
Lousewies looks distressed, the loss was bigger then she had expected. The question by the Thelasi seems to annoy her somewhat, as does the elf with the German accent. Another elf., she thinks. The Prime Minister has seen enough Elves tonight with Galadriëls celebrations being the centre of attention. The annoyance is more due to agitation then a general dislike for elves.
“I do not want to comment yet. First I have to process the results of these elections, talk about it in the morning. I am not excluding any possibilities yet but I think we have to interpret the results of these elections carefully.”
She begins to walk again… ((but the journalist can always insist, of course.))

The message is received and the offer is accepted. Scottford von Harrick does, however, receive a request for utmost secrecy from the SLP. KGP and SP do not seem to mind it so much. The meeting is to take place in Knootoss, preferably. The address of a hotel is included.

Tanah Burung's embassy in Knootoss distributes copies of an international English-language newspaper with a small circulation in this country. And while the publication, naturally, does not represent the views of the government of Tanah Burung, it is not unusual for sources close to the Violeta Bi Bere to have their say in this publication. Whether the following article is one of those times, only the discerning reader will be able to tell.
INTERNATIONAL TANAH BURUNG TRIBUNE
From the Opinion pages
It's no secret that the colonial-minded and the nationalist congregate in the RCPK, which seems set to take power in the latest of Knootoss' dizzying shifts of power. The anti-elf sentiment that once threatened to turn a this tolerant little country into a land of bigotry must be considered vanquished with the comign to power of a party led by an elf.
But the RCPK, we fear, may be the stronghold of another sort of bigotry. Can we expect the doors to close against non-Europeans immigrants? Can we be sure that a minaret will be welcome in the new Knootoss on the same basis as the skyscrapers of that country's only real religion, the worship of cold, hard cash? Can we be sure that the environment will be safe now that Big Oil and Big Cola are so close to the seat of power?
The RCPK will dismiss these questions as fear-mongering. We're not so sure that the RCPK has answered them. We're not so sure that the peace of the world will be safe in the hands of a Prime Minister who has plotted to invade other continents, one who dismisses those who differ with her as "evil."
And what of the SLP, grown fat and complacent? Its only ideology is power, its only loyalty is to itself. It stands for nothing but the self-satisfied pursuit of self-interest. It will be tempted to turn to the RCPK and strike a deal that will give it either a majority in cabinet or the Prime Ministerial seat, so accustomed to SLP bottoms. For that, its power brokers will argue, is the will of the people. But did not the majority of peopel vote against the radical right-wing views of the RCPK? We hope the SLP will not sell its soul too cheaply. We hope it will not consent to insane ideas like the abolition of income tax. If it does choose to remain in coalition with the Green Party, then it should recognize the peple's votes by inviting the Socialsits to join the coalition.
For the Greens, this election must come as a wake-up call. In power, they achieved virtually nothing. They became a dim echo of the SLP, an echo of an empty voice. They were unable to stop the RCPK state-secretary pursuing her own goals. And in trying to ride the tiger, they opened the door to that state-secretary becoming Prime Minister.
For the Greens, some time in opposition may be the best tonic. They can become a genuine voice for the environment, for peace, for international cooperation. They can set their sights on genuince and sweeping change, and not on simply becoming the junior coalition partner to a business party. The eloquent voice of Femke Halsema can be raised for justice and not stifled in the halls of power. There is a constituency for a party that speaks for the common people and for respect for the earth. The success of the Socialist Party shows that people will vote for change.
Some time in opposition can only help save the soul fo the Green Party. It will be harsh medicine for Knootians who can expect an RCPK-SLP government to slash and burn their welfare state, but in the long run, a Green-Socialist alternative may be the only hope for Knootoss. Business parties on one side, people's parties on the other. Let the contradictions emerge.
Scottford von Harrick entered the small meeting room. He nodded towards the representatives from the three parties. "Good morning, friends." Sitting down, he opened his briefcase and took out four pieces of paper. "The Imperator had wished to remain fully neutral in this... political situation... but has recently decided that an Elvish ultra-capitalist nationalist in power in Knootoss is not fully beneficial to the Edolia and its interests. Therefore, I come to offer your three parties a deal -and this must remain completely top-secret you understand... Please look over the letters.
Friends,
While many Edolians have looked on at the Knootian elections with some trepidation, few expected the outcome that has taken place. With the conservative party in the lead and talks of ending the SLP-KGP alliance, the state of Knootian politics is, at the moment, frankly disturbing. We would seek to offer your parties a deal. In exchange for refusing to break the SLP-KGP alliance and joining with the Socialist Party as well, Edolia is willing to, through any agency you want, give a near monopoly on the sale of cola, to Knootian firms. If done through an agency friendly to your cause -and one could easily become friendly with the right encouragement- this could be profitable for your three parties. Furthermore, this is an unprecedented move in Edolian history -the granting of a near monopoly- and could be seen as an example of the strong leadership and skillful foreign policy of your ruling coalition. I hope that this offer is accepted and that the alliance between Edolia and Knootoss prospers.

Lady Galadriel,
I appreciate your frankness, it is very refreshing. And of course I understand the somewhat precarious situation of your own foreign policy where my nation, your own, and your Sisgardian allies are concerned.
You have my personal word as a man of honor that any meeting between us will be kept discreet and confidential. I had initially planned to host you myself at the embassy in Knootcap, but if you would prefer a more suitable location, I assure you that will not affect my plans incredible. Please feel free to make whatever plans you feel are necessary in this situation. I would hate for a brief moment of indiscretion to derail relations between Knootoss, Valinon, and the Sisgardians.

"Sire?" a courier murmured as he entered the Imperial Bedroom.
"Yes, what 'tis is?" bellowed the aging emperor as he was browsing through his collection of imported bath salts to decide on which he should use for his afternoon soak. He had taken more care of himself than ever before; after all, he was aging, and he might had to stay in tip-top shape to stretch out his life a bit more. It had been quite a fruitful 62 years of life so far, and he hoped for at least 3 more years before he gave up the ghost and before his son, who would be Alexander II, assumes power.
"Your newspaper, lordship," replied the courier as he placed the papers on a cherrywood end table that was near the intricately carved and grand mahogany doors that left from this little sanctuary for the tsar. The 62-year-old emperor bidded the man to leave, and then opened the paper. The results of the Knootian Election was easily found in his reading. "We've gotten a foothold..." said Alexander to himself. "However, I might not live until the next elections to expand Valerian influence any further. My son might not enjoy such a policy!"
Therefore, the Valerian Emperor wrote a letter to the IP to assure that the party continues to expand its power even if Alexander I dies before the next elections.
--- IP Headquarters ---
Zach paced around in his office. The recent elections proved fruitful, garnering one seat in the Parliament of Knootoss; of course, Amelia, who would be queen, will fill that seat. However, he needed to consolidate this gain and get an act together to prepare for the next round of elections. The Conservatives had been projected to be the largest potential voter group for the IP in the last elections, and that is where Zach plans to strike next time. Even though it may result like a Rooseveltian-Taftian Republican split in the 1912 American elections, it would dethrone the Conservatives and give a base for the IP to further work on...
OOC:
I will post more on the consolidation of the seat gain, and the introduction of Amelia to parliament.

RCPK wins party majority in the Knootian parliament.
“Show’s over, folks”, - say Knootians.
That was the phrase most often heard by me while walking through the streets of Knootcap. The posters with the smiling faces of the candidates were still present on every square centimeter of public walls. Huge banners were stretched through the streets, with statements like “Stem op ons voor een betere toekomst!” Or even better: "Maak de goede keuze, stem op ons!" During the past days, all of the media was filled with information on different blocks, parties, candidates, programs, promises. In other words – constant brainwashing. All net. All channels.
But today, the show’s over. A public services patrol is ripping off the posters from public buildings, several policemen are busy with taking off a banner that hangs right across the street while a group of young people, mixing elves and humans is walking down the street, chanting happily and loudly:
Galadriel is onze koningin.
Ze laat de socialisten er niet in!
For the first time in several days calm befell on the Dutch Democratic Republic of Knootoss. For the first time in several days I look back on the events.
”Of course we protect the interests of minorities!”- says a Knootian, fingers crossed on the back.
As a rather old and still lasting democratic republic, the DDR boasts an excellent array of rights for its citizens, but seems to lack real civic obligations. A Knootian political commentator goes off by telling that a minor party does not deserve the same public opening as a major one, and ends by stating that in the DDR, the interests of the minorities are protected. Indeed, in Knootoss, the RCPK got much more media coverage than a little peripheral party. Why? The RCPK had much more money to invest into the media coverage, thusly buying its time in the media and having a better chance to brainwash as many electors as possible, whilst a smaller party would satisfy itself with one or two posters every corner. Is this democratic? “Yes, of course,” – say Knootians. Here, democracy is the rule of the majority at the expense of the minority. In the Grand Duchy, the CEC makes sure everybody has an equal chance during provincial elections and elections to the Council of Duchy. Even the backstage quasi-inexistent Unified Republican Party has the same media coverage as the Patriotic Movement, the pro-Dynasty party that has dominated the Council of Duchy ever since its creation already 30 years ago. In Knootoss, the strongest wins.
”Foreign money is good. Why spend ours anyway?” – asks a random Knootian.
In the DDR, the success of a party is determined by the amount of money it is ready to invest into the media coverage of its campaign. The more the party pays, the more it is seen in all types of media. As such, extensive funds are needed, and most of these funds come directly from foreign governments that want to see a ‘suitable’ party in power as to attain a certain objective. The Knootian conflict is a remarkable example of it, when SATO and GDODAD clashed over respective ‘suitable’ parties and leaders. This time, the outcome was calm, hopefully. The guys over at the TDFA can sleep normally, they won’t have to negotiate yet again.
Although the foreign involvement is rather implicit in the DDR, certain clues come up. Such as the Imperial Party, which came out of nowhere with quite a respectable sum to invest and won a seat in the parliament right away. Who are they? Where do they come from? Who supports them? Who wants Knootoss to become a monarchy?
But the IP is just one example. The RCPK has, out of nowhere, come up with the hugest funds for their campaign. Where did the money come from?
The other day, over at the Grand Ducal Embassy, I have heard two Room 0 guys mentioning Valinon, Cyberutopia and the names of some other nations before they vanished out of sight behind the back of a broadly smiling Foreign Protector, who made it rather clear that the area was ‘authorized personnel only’.
As always, the Knootian elections remain a passionate mystery with a touch of international scandal always present. So far, the RCPK has offered to make a coalition with the SLP. No response followed. The next Knootian Premier will be known soon. The TDFA has made no comment.
Show must go on?

That year, The International Tanah Burung Tribune won a prize for foreign newspaper editorial of the year. The Vigvar Daily won best foreign coverage of the year. The prizes were bronze bustes shaped like a cookie.
Violeta Bi Bere was offered a job as political commentator with De Volkskrant (The peoples paper – left wing) If she were to accept she’d get to publish her political editorials in that Knootian newspaper freely, with no obligations attached.
((Very, very nice. You both clearly get the local politics here :). Good advice, too. In the long term, maybe you’ll spot another trend ;) ))

Karl Ludwig I Hotel
The Hague
-----------------------------
The Karl Ludwig hotel was named after the old Lavenrunzian monarch who had lost the United Provinces.
It was a well-known hotel for politicians, as many meetings were planned there. The personnel was known to keep things private and politicians, in turn, extended the courtesy of being a fixed clientele. But with the leaders of all parties being constantly chased by the press there was little privacy for them, even in the hotel. That’s why SLP and KGP had sent their own negotiators instead of actual political leaders.
The socialists, however, were not familiar with this custom and has sent Thijs Waard.
Sorry, I couldn’t find the hotel, he said to the Edolian as he entered 5 minutes late. The representative for the SLP, a man in his fifties called Wim van Gorichem, barely hid his contempt for the man who didn’t look as a politician at all. The woman representing the KGP said nothing but opened a position for a chair next to her.
There was a moment of silence as the three read the document.
The green was first to speak, appreciatively: “That’s a fine offer by the Imperator, Mr. von Harrick. Don’t you think Wim?” She smiled, hoping he’d like it.
A tiny smile began to appear on the face of the liberal. “Yes, yes. I had already heard from sources in UnAPS about the Edolian willingness to… compromise.”, he mused vaguely.
Thijs Waard had read the note with growing surprise, and the reaction by the liberal (whom he thought a decadent bourgeois pig) surprised him even more. In politics, he was almost completely inexperienced. As the son of a workers family the ‘game’ of politics hadn’t been watched like they watched football. He had risen through the ranks because of his idealistic zeal and devotion to the party, but the months of campaigning were surely different from this. Edolia was one of the nations that he, as a fervent socialist, had looked up to greatly. And here they were haggling over economics like that.
The socialist turned his head violently and asked the SLPer with some hostility: “What are you suggesting?!”
The liberal replied with much confidence: “Oh, please Mr. Waard. We’re all friends here, just having a talk. If you ever want to be a part of the game you’ll have to learn about consensus politics and throw away that insane idea that we are here to fight each other.”
The female green stared blandly at this remark. She had her own thoughts about the ‘cooperation’ that had been theirs now for some time. Her youthful revolutionary spirit had been beaten out of her, at tables like this, in this hotel, talking on a first-name basis. It was now more of a burden, or at least she knew that Wim considered it so.
The socialist glared fiercely, but said nothing. Being part of government was a little more important then telling what he really thought. Thijs knew when to be quiet.
The liberal waited and had a dramatic pause before he spoke, casually waiting until the people were looking at him. He spoke with a slight wrinkle of concern on his forehead. Either genuine, or first-class acting: “You see, there is a problem with this proposal: the elections. The will of the people seems to indicate that the conservatives get to form a coalition. The initiative is theirs, and, well, I can hardly go against the will of the people now can I?”, he asked rhetorically.
”You have a choice, Wim,” said the woman quietly. “Don’t pretend that you don’t.” There was some bitterness.
“Yes, yes, I do”, the liberal replied thoughtfully. “But there are some problems with the alternative. I mean no offence, Mr. Waard, but your party consists entirely of political amateurs. I frankly can’t see any ministry that you would be able to run. I know my friends in the KGP are perfectly capable of doing so. And those in the RCPK…”
The socialist was fuming at what he felt was a direct insult: “We CAN take responsibility you arrogant…” …he managed not to say it. “And sometime we WILL.”
“Please, please be calm”, replied the liberal with an attitude of calm. “I’m sure you will. The wheels of fortune turn and turn. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.” Obviously he had managed to get past the electoral loss only days ago.
He ignored the angry socialist and turned to Scottford von Harrick. “I appreciate the gesture, I really do. However I do see an unbalance in this proposal.” He glanced over the paper and said with a frown identical to that he had before: “You see, while I like your idea I think it would be unfair towards the other industries in Knootoss. Just extending a monopoly only to the cola industry, I mean. “ He coughed. “It is also not very consistent with our policies of free trade and distribution ”, he said with much emphasis. He smiled, hoping the Edolian would understand.

A woman wearing a brown cap (like that of a monk) entered the Karl Ludwig hotel. The cap covered most of the woman’s head, making it impossible to determine who she was. She softly murmured something to the receptionist who then led her away to another room. As soon as she left, two men in black suits entered. Following her.
The mysterious woman was led to the top of the hotel, were there was a small, but luxurious corner room with a dinner table for four. It was set up for dinner for two people this evening though. The receptionist made sure that she was comfortable and took the order for a drink.
The door closed and the woman took off her cap, revealing her face and two distinct pointy ears. Lady nos Cirdan was waiting for her company to join her.
*Neither party knows about the others meeting. And as this hotel is used by politicians from all denominations it would be a nice coincidence.

Magnus valerius: very well. Feel free to post it when you feel like it. I’m looking forward to it. ;)
Scottford von Harrick nodded. "I understand your position. Nevertheless, we strongly believe that it is in the interests of both Edolia and your parties to keep the conservatives from power. As you are aware, Edolia and Knootoss have found themselves rather recently more economically involved, a relationship which is quite beneficial for us all. Edolia would find itself far less... inclined to do business with a conservative government. I am sure you can understand our position. I have spoken to both the Imperator and the Chancellor and they have both authorized me to speak on behalf of Edolian foreign policy. What benefits would you get from forming a coalition with the conservatives?"

Wim van Gorichem did not wait to allow others to reply. The liberal answered cryptically, nodding.
“I understand this perfectly – every coalition will have its impact on different economic partners though. It can only be hoped that no partners would act against the common interest.”
He frowned for a moment. “I don’t think your present offer can by honourably accepted by our party. It is too… scandalous should it blow up in our faces. I don’t know about the others but I value my integrity.”, he said righteously.
Not even mentioning it would leave us wide open to manipulation, he thought.
“However we are willing to open negotiations for a left-wing coalition in exchange for a fair deal. You use ‘shops’ to distribute goods, right? Well, access to that distribution network for Knootian companies could be negotiated.”
He shifted his feet. “You see, a left-wing coalition will have adverse effects on relations with other business partners. Domestic matters will have to be considered, of course, in these negotiations. However it would do much to make such a coalition economically viable.”
He smiled politely now. “I’m sure we would be able to cut a deal.”

Scottford looked concerned. "You must understand, I'm not attempting to suggest anything... unethical. The workings of your capitalist system are sometimes strange to me and what is considered 'right' and 'wrong' are not always apparent. We are open to whatever you propose, so long as it does not involve a weakening of Edolian government control or allow the encroachment of capitalism into the society. And yes, we use what you might call 'shops...' They are a vital part of our economy in fact as it is through the purchase of goods from the government that vast portions of our revenue is obtained. I am not entirely sure what you are getting at when it comes the shops... But I am here to listen." He smiled and waited for the other men to speak.
Off the coast of Knootoss, a smaller Thelasi grav-ship slipped underwater. She waited, observing. In the darkness of the night time ocean, an antena was raised, picking up, among the amature radio transmittions, most of the intercepts were thrown out, but a small number were sent by tightbeam up to an orbiting satilite which relayed the transmittions back to Thelas for decoding.

The United Alliance of Progressive States (UnAPS) is a medium-sized alliance of socially and/or economically progressive nations that includes Knootoss and Edolia. We're anti-imperialist, pro-civil rights, basically. We don't act as an alliance so much (which is why not many have heard of us) but instead use the relationships we form through the alliance to engage in joint ventures.

With faked surprise the liberal replied: "Of course we respect your system. That is why I want to use it – as friends. I am merely suggesting that you allow that Knootian products are also sold in these shops. Of course our businesses could pay you a fair fee for selling and the use of space. It would give your people a fair choice, some added products. The only products that would be sold would be those that we could make cheaper or better anyways so your planned economy can focus on what you are good at, at a larger scale. Central coordination via our Social Economic Council is possible so there won’t be any ruinous competition or damage to your economy. No Edolian workers would be exploited in the process, and I could get the finance departme…”
“NO!” resounded though the room. Thijs Waard, the socialist representative looked angry. “Again the neoliberal agenda”, he spoke as if he had witnessed this a thousand times before, “I won’t stand for it. I will not go and join a coalition with vultures. At… at… at the same time you are talking with that neoconservative b*tch in some other room in some other hotel. You’re just going to go with any opportunity to oppress the workers of other lands in addition to oppressing ours.”
”Its mutually beneficial trade – not oppression. Really Mr. Waard.”
“Well I’m done with it,” the socialist stated bluntly. He stood up and turned to the Edolian. “I am very sorry Comrade. I thank you for your attempt but as you have seen this man is a capitalist and he cannot be reasoned with.”
He nodded to Scottford von Harrick and left. The woman representing the greens sighed deeply. She felt a strong headache was coming up. “Wim… really…” she said bitterly but she didn’t finish her sentence. Instead she looked at the Edolian.

Galadriel smiled, replying with much Elvish mystique. ”I understand – once things reach a certain juncture they always return to what they were.” She beckoned the Emperor to come in further, and she cast a look outside, glancing sideways to the illuminated blackness. “It is a nice world we live in here. Crowded, perhaps, with all too many who wish us ill, but quite enjoyable a cradle to lie in…” – slight pause – “…for all the races.” She let her milk-white hand slide over the quality-wooden table, seemingly carelessly.
“Please sit down – dinner is about to be served”, she said invitingly. “The hotel cooks have taken the liberty of preparing one of your favourite meals.*”
*((your call what it is. I’m sure intelligence would be able to find that out.))
Rowald's eyebrows rise as the waiters bring the meal forward, but a jovial smile soon reaches across his face as the covers are taken off to reveil sirloin tips in mushroom gravy. A brief low laugh utters from his throat.
"Lady nos Cirdan, I think this is the beginning of a particularly fruitful relationship," he laughs slightly again. "Thank you, indeed, and from the smell alone it seems that the cooks deserve a king's ransom."

Galadriël and Alderman sit down for dinner. The elf’s plate is brought in after that of the Emperor. There are some interesting-looking leaves on them, dark green with wide nerves and something that looks like smashed potatoes on it. Some side-garments make it appear professional.
A waiter appears, asking if His Highness would like a drink.
[Enter choice here.]
After Alderman has chosen, Galadriël asks for a glass of special red wine from the Dominion of DNL. The waiter leaves, leaving the two alone together for a moment.
“So…”, asks Galadriël probing unassumingly, “What brings an intergalactic Emperor to our small earthbound Republic?”
Rowald sets his own glass of burgundy down with measured care.
"For starters, My Lady, let us say that there has been something of a fundamental change in foreign policy since my father passed away. It has taken Duke Sterling, Count Leopold, and myself a few years but we have started reevaluating and reopening relations and alliances both old and new. Also, the policy of setting behind our walls in Alpha Centauri no longer is practical or in the best interests of the continued growth of my nation."
"There have been several posible avenues suggested by which we could expand in terms of economic commitments, but I have found that the one with the most promise is the Sol system--Earth and Mars in particular. In order to reach a greater level of presence on Earth, I need to first make sure we do not scare away or erode our current alliancesand friends in the Terran community. I realize that relations between the Republic and the Valinor have been rocky at many points, My Lady, more by our own fault than on the part of you and your people. And I wish to take the necessary time to work these problems out and establish a less confrontational relationship than Valinon currently causes the Republic. Even if this does mean that I will have to polite eat crow for some of my father's policies regarding the Sisgardian nations."

((Sorry for my rudeness in not replying. I'd open this thread and then this post wouldn't make sense. I wanted to make a post beyond "Galadriël nods thoughtfully and pours the emperor more wine." ;)
Galadriël nods thoughtfully. "I understand"... she hesitates but warmly adds, "and I think that this could turn out to be a very positive development for both our nations." She thinks while eying the Emperor carefully, but not aggressively. "As Prime Minister I would support you, of course, in your attempts to do this..." her voice trails. "...however I am not so sure about how the Sisgardian nations will respond. They seem to regard the Empire and its interests in Proxima Centauri as a strategic threat."
A man carrying more wine comes in, and Galadriël signifies he can put it down on a small table on the side. Then she dismisses him silently. When he closes the door she continues: “I’d like to help you, as we have a common cause, but I’m not sure how. The DDR used to have an intelligence-sharing treaty with the Vortex Corporation and the GDT but it was recently cancelled and I do not know with how much trust they still regard us.” The looks slightly bitter: “And Der Angst, well, since we had a huge economic dispute they have been extremely hesitant to deal with us at all. And with the GDT being on the brink of civil war things aren’t looking up.”
OOC: Yes, I had been wrangling with that as well. I have also been researching the Sisgardian nations, and the more and more I look at it the less and less I like the possible IC situation we may be having to face. But I'm at least going to try and diffuse it, and if they refuse, well that's their perrogative.
Rowald leans back and steeples his fingers, and for a few seconds taps his index fingers together.
"I had received reports that the relationships between the DDR and the Sisgardian nations had deteriorated somewhat, My Lady, but I was not aware they had to that extent. And I apologize for my own ignorance in that respect, however, allow me to make a somewhat pointed observation at this point."
"The Sisgardian nations cannot continue this policy of outward hostility with Valinon indefinately, and not seriously think there will not be consequences for their actions. Especially when there is a chance for reconciliation, and however ready they may think themselves to be in that respect, I do not think the Sisgardians realize just how far the implications of a war with Valinon would reach. True it would not be advantageous to my own people, but it will not be any easier for them."
"As I have said before, I will not force you or any other Prime Minister of the DDR into making a decision between the two sides of this argument, for the fault does not lie with Knootoss. It lies between the Valinor and the Sisgardian nations. I will still make the offer to the Sisgardians and attempt reconciliation, but if they refuse the future may not be pleasant at all, whether we wish it to be or not."
"However, I believe we may still pursue another path. Are there any ways that the Valinor can help Knootoss and your rising administration without affecting the relationship between the DDR and the Sisgardians any further?"

"Well...", says Galadriël, "I appreciate the offer, Emperor, and I would like to make ties closer on a rather innocent level. A cultural exchange, perhaps? Or maybe some of our corporations can work together on research projects. I'm sure we can stimulate such things through a common organisation. This was worked for other bilateral agreements too, in the past."
"That sounds wonderful, My Lady, and I only wish that I could do more for you and all the Knootians, but it seems that fate has conspired against us for the moment. I will speak with Provost Academician Zakharov and have him begin to lay the ground work for an exchange student program between the Imperial University and the Knootian colleges, and will also speak with Baron Mironenko of the United Guilds and several other non-affiliated corporations and try to nudge them in an appropriate direction."
He leans forward with a smile, "Hopefully I can begin initiatives that will alleviate some of the tension between the Sisgardians and Valinon soon enough. And that way we can find this a much more easier situation the next time we speak."
He pauses for one moment, "Actually, My Lady, there is one more thing I wish to offer. I doubt you have heard of the Nu-Space network that we have completed several years ago, but I think it may suit these pursuits perfectly. The Nu-Space network allows for FTL real-time communication between Sol and Alpha Centauri. It originally started as a military initiative, but it has been expanding into the private sector for the past four years in our port cities here on Earth and Mars. Through it you can access all the various commercial services of Valinon itself as if they where right here and on, and I do hope you would do us the honor of being the first non-Centauri nation to be connected to the network. If that is acceptable I will speak with a few representatives of Nova Technology when I return to Proxima and set that particular strain of events into motion as well."

...Provost Academician Zakharov...?
Galadriëls interest was piqued. She remembered the former leader from Diablo_NL all too well. And this one was a scientist too. Could it be a coincidence? She wonders, and makes a mental note to check with intelligence on the matter.
"Well, that would be wonderful!", kirrs the elf enthusiastically. "I think that we... the navy and traders... would be thrilled at the posibillities for trade!"
She took a sip from her drink.
"Of course, our ports are open to Valinon people who want to visit, including Rotterdam.", she says reprociatingly. "If only I had something similar to offer you."
((OOC: I don't really have much else to talk about from an OOC perspective. Chit-chat, maybe. Unless there is something you want from us. :) "And they drank away the night" then? :P
Btw, did you get the name Zhararov from Alpha Centauri or is there a link to the NS leader?))
OOC: Not really, I guess we can call this RP just about done. In regards to the Nu-space network I will post a thread when I get some more time about its completion and opening to the Knootian government and public at large. As for Zakharov, I got it from Alpha Centauri, not from Diablo.
Actually Crimmond and myself worked out an explanation for a similar situation when we did a bout of RPing together. Basically we said that the original Zakharov seeded the galaxy with clones to perpetuate his own existence, but as too which of these is the original who knows for sure?

OOC: ok... yay! and lol @ the Zhakarov solutions. That means I can use him too! I actually did think of cloning him to revive him after the Diablo Zhakarov died, but that is a long story...
