The History of Hazatak and Aridia

05-03-2004, 03:39
From an article wrote by the Hazatakan historician Azu Agudhar. The historical events described are from the ancient records of the now destroyed nation of North Lowrellyn, one of the few historical documents that survived in Aridia until the present days.

"The region of Aridia is a natural warm desert, with a few oasis and fertile savannas, where people first settled thousands of years ago. The cultural and political differences drew the boundary lines between the different countries, that changed constantly throughout the centuries. The common origins and religions didn´t help them to keep long periods of peace between the nations.

However, 112 years ago, the 14 countries, after a long diplomatic effort led by Troogrönd and Hyigard, the two local superpotences of that time, came to an agreement, and for the first time, peace was stabilished in Aridia. The Orakian Pact marked the starting point for a new age of industrialization and development, an era of prosperity for all the countries of Aridia.

However, as the prosperity came, so did corruption, and after a few decades, the economical miracle became a nightmare. And it provoked new nationalist movements with high popular support. The old democracies fell under the boots of tyrants, that quickly started opressive regimes against the same people who supported them. They kept them under control by many means: propaganda, populist measures, flaming speeches. Everyone under a different flag was a potential enemy.

So, 50 years after the Orakian Pact, a period of tension began... not a very long period, since one year after, the ultra-nationalist regime of Ghursken invaded the peaciful kingdom of Armhölm, backed up by 5 countries. It was the excuse to start a generalized war, finishing with decades of development.

The shadows of the war involved from the biggest metropolis to even the most distant villages. War wasn´t new to everyone, anyone above their 70´s would remember the ancient times. But the methods and the weapons changed a lot in those 50 years, and that surprised everyone.

The big towns were bomber. The farms were used as battle fields, particularly on razed field tatics. The population was scared, and hungry. Nowhere was safe.

10 years of war devastated the economy in Aridia. A good percentage of the people got killed in combat. However, the coalition led by Armhölm was being defeated by the Alliance, and the conflict seemed to end soon... when Imperatrix Laya of Armhölm and General Lune of Hyigard authorized the use of nuclear weapons against their enemies... and the Alliance promptly counter-attacked by the same way. In a few days, what was left of the formely prosperous region of Aridia was a vitrified desert covered with rumble, retorted metal and carbonized bodies.

Only a very few individuals left, scatered all over Aridia. These survivors subsisted on the edge of the nuclear reach, on the edge of the countries. A few spots of fertile black soil from savanna resisted, and were quickly colonized by a people without a leader, without a nation.

The international aid came from neighbour regions, and with their help, the colonies became villages, and villages became towns. The few hundreds of surviving families became thousands, and hundreds of thousands. In 51 years, the need of a centralized government rose on the hearts of the people who lived in the southern-central part of Aridia, and the new United Socialist States of Hazatak, centered on the city of Hazatak, was founded. Their leader, ellected democratically, Comrad Mono, became the first president of this new and prosperous nation.

The social and economical advantages of a central government and a balanced ruler is currently inspiring and seducing the neighbour cities and communities, and a new rise of nations is expected to happen in Aridia in the next years. But this time, we hope we have learned with our past mistakes ourselves, and this time, may all the future nations of Aridia live in peace and prosperity, for everyone´s good."
