In their weekly international press release, the government of New Xanthal unveiled the following article to the international community.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Clearing the streets
by Faraday Hawking
The great United States of New Xanthal has announced plans to move the lower classes completely off the Alpha continent of our home world to ensure that they do not trouble the eyes of the superior citizens. The lower classes will be required to live in their own cities, where they will do their part in ensuring the continued growth of the New Xanthalian economy. The upper class will be allowed to live their lives in luxury, away from the squalor of the dirty urchins that make up the working class of our nation. In the intrest of maintaining order in the communities of workers, a new middle class of Border Police will be created to ensure that our workers stay in their place, out of the way of their betters. Border Police will carry standing authorization to take all necessary action to keep the lower classes in their communities and ensure their continued productivity. To further ensure our future, we have negotiated with our travel companies to raise fares beyond the affordable range for workers. Price floors for tickets of carriers from other nations will also be set to assure that the workers can not leave. In this way will we secure the pillars of our nation so that we may build our great state on them confident of their stability.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xanthal has issued several formal objections to the actions of their former comrades, but there seems to be little ear for other opinions in the U.S.N.X. government. It is a disturbing trend that promises to continue into the forseeable future for the radically right-wing opressive nation. One Xanthalian journalist called the latest actions of New Xanthal "a dispicible violation of the rights of the working class to ensure the opulent lifestyle of the wealthy." There seems to be little argument from New Xanthalian corporations, but they call their actions "a critical measure in maintaining the status quo and continued prosperity of the superior classes." The Socialist Republic of Xanthal has formally blacklisted the United States of New Xanthal in response to what the Dictator called "blatant disregard for universal sentient rights on the part of the New Xanthalian government and corporations." The U.S.N.X. President countered the remark with a criticism of the Socialist Republic's "useless endeavour to preserve equality of its people." With the stress between the estranged nations building rapidly, it seems increasingly likely that the relatively recent Treaty of Aranamor may not last.

Skeelzania full heartily supports the U.S.N.X., as we believe it is every nations right to discriminate, oppress, and generally just be really mean to whoever is deemed "sub-standard". While the Principality does not think an economy based on fundamentally slave labor is a strong economy, we understand the New Xanthalian upper classes desire to live a life free of unsightly beggars, lower-tier laborers and street urchins. In fact, we can relate first hand to the U.S.N.X's plight, as we ourselves have a problem involving refugees and shanty towns in our more prestigious suburbs.

We oppose any and all attempts to halt fair trade and transport through others' space, especially when the other party is our brethren. You are free to impose whatever sanctions you would like on New Xanthal, but do not try to stop other nations' ships.

Skeelzania formally protests this blatant infringment on a nation's soverignty. This blockade is a clear move by the more developed, aggressive nations to flex their politcal and military muscle. Skeelzanian ships will pay no heed to the Kechian blockade and, if fired upon, will be escorted by Skeelzanian Naval units.

Xanthal: We appreciate your respect for our sovereignty, if nothing else.

Skeelzania: We continue to admire and encourage your steadfast opposition to the power-hungry nations that would try to destroy our way of life.

Cyberutopia: The Border Police will ensure that our working class stays in its place. If they don't, we will level the cities that oppose us, and the people with them. If those in the working class can succeed in their cities, they will be allowed to live among the higher classes. Not everyone can be born into success, you know.

Arenumberg: What's the Human expression? Bite me. You have no grounds to eject us from the NAA, and you know it.

Hattia: Indeed. We have the right to run our own nation the way we want to.

Hattia: You complain that a blockade will infringe on the rights of NX, yet you allow them to oppress their people?

Xanthal: If you won't change this for the better, we shall!

New Xanthal: We have our ways of causing you to give in. Do not give us cause to demonstrate our....capabilities.

We are now rigging a thus-far classified number of KAR ships for long-term independent work. The ships are under the controll of Admiral Karl Vincent Rose.

The Systems Commonwealth has been watching the situation concerning New Xanthal with great interest, and although the Commonwealth may have a monarch as its head of state, we also have a democratically elected government, and it pains us to see large populations of citizens falling victim to the horrors of facisim, dictatorships, and widespread discrimination.

The Commonwealth would provide political support for such a blockade, and perhaps if the situation required it, ships to support the blockade as well. However any promises of ships is completely dependent on the status of the conflict the Systems Commonwealth is currently involved in with the Klonor Empire.

"People of Skeelzania! At 1541 Solomon Standard Time the Kechian's announced plans to initate a blockade of the United States of New Xanthal within 12 hours if the U.S.N.X does not concede to their demands. Once again, Skeelzania protests the actions of these overly rightouess nations in their attempts to dictate domestic policy onto their weaker neighbors. But unlike some members of the New Aranamor Alliance, we do not plan to sit idlelly by as one of our oldest members is strangled! As of 1600 hours the Skeelzanian fleet has been activated. At the first sign of
aggression against New Xanthal, our ships will spring to their aid. We implore that fellow New Aranamorian's do the same.

Already puppet states are flocking to the Kechian banner, giving thier 'support'. To that, I say we shall meet them head on with the Red and Black Flag of the Principality! Skeelzania stands prepared to defend not only ourselves, but all members of the Alliance from alien aggression.

I acknowledge the fact that the people of New Xanthal are not human either, but that does not matter! In joining the New Aranamor Alliance, we swore to protect all members, wether they be human, dwarf, elven, Xanthalian, or super-intelligent shades of the color blue. Long live the Principality! He had been the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of the Wick for over 10 years now, and never had he been so nervous. He marched confidently up to the podium, took a deep breathe and looked straight into the camera. If there were any others in the press room they would have noticed the complete lack of Teleprompters, every one of Brooks’ speeches were his own.
“People of the Wick, I bring you alarming news from the territory of New Xanthal. Advanced scouts from the U.S.N.X have detected what appears to be a large and hostile fleet approaching their border. As of yet an accurate count of the hostile vessels is impossible due to the high levels of ECM being emitted. It is believed that this fleet intends to force the U.S.N.X to comply to their previous demands of social reform. While the Wick does not condone the U.S.N.X actions, this volition of their sovereignty can not be tolerated.

To this end, the 4th Fleet under Admiral Congreve has been sent to the frontier of the U.S.N.X they will enter their territory once our help is accepted and defend our alliance against this threat.

That is all.

The 4th fleet represents no less then 50% of the Wick’s strength in capital ships and 20% in light units:
8 Sphinx class Super Dreadnaughts
6 Reliant class Battle Cruisers
12 Heavy Cruisers
8 Light cruisers
20 Destroyers

The advanced destroyer divions could possibly arrive at the border within six hours.

The Socialist Republic of Xanthal is hereby sending 200 Armada starships to run the blockade of Relafia and escort approximately 100 cargo vessels from Xanthal and other nations through to New Xanthal. Be advised that they will not fire unless fired upon, and that these ships will be fully-functional warships. If necessary, we will dispatch 100 more ships to assist in running the blockade. It is time that the NAA, Xanthal, and all other nations opposed to the forced isolation of a nation simply because of its policies show their strength in defending New Xanthal's rights. I remind the NAA that it is required by the Treaty of Aranamor to help defend New Xanthal. The Xanthalian fleet will arrive in four hours, and it will escort its charges to New Xanthal's main port of call for merchant craft one hour later. Any ships in the way will be pushed aside by use of GMS, and any ships that fire on the Xanthalian fleet or the cargo ships under its protection will be destroyed by the might of the Armada.

Andromeda class (heavy general purpose): $500,000,000,000
The Andromeda class is designed as an all-purpose vessel. Moderately well-armed but oversized and difficult to maneuver, it usually fights only when it can't run. The Andromeda class boasts a highly advanced sensor array, a large and diverse crew, and a variety of subsystems to get almost any job done.

Slipfighter class (one man fighter): $500,000
A small, one man fighter with unmatched agility and burning fast speed. The Slipfighter is armed with two multiphasic disrupter banks and two cluster missiles but, due to space constraints, has only type I shields. Used to combat other fighters or in swarms to defeat larger ships. A varient of the Slipfighter is also used as a planetary police vessel by the Ministry of Justice.

Sabre class (light tactical): $100,000,000,000
The Sabre class is designed to pack a strong punch in a small package. The Sabre class has only a few torpedo tubes due to space constraints; but it has many phaser and disrupter banks. Its shields are of mediocre quality, so the Sabre class cannot withstand a sustained assault. It uses great speed and maneuverability coupled with its small size to dodge attacks while firing its powerful weapons. An unimpressive warship on its own, the Sabre class can do enormous damage when in fleets.

Dreadnaught class (medium tactical): $1,000,000,000,000
The Dreadnaught class is designed primarily for ship-to-ship combat, armed with a heavy load of standard weaponry as well as a midsize ion/plasma cannon. Despite its size the Dreadnaught is still highly maneuverable. It is protected by double shields and strong armor. A match for any ship of comparable class, the Dreadnaught is a very able and well-balanced warship.

Eclipse class (ultra-heavy tactical): $10,000,000,000,000
The Eclipse class is based off of the Imperial Star Destroyer class of the same name. It is massive, bigger than most starbases, but still relatively mobile. It's assault weapon power is unmatched, and it can take on most super-capital ships easily. It's size means that it is vulnerable to large numbers of smaller warships, so it is always escorted by other Xanthalian vessels. Adequately supported it can defeat entire fleets of enemy warships. Used mostly as a weapon of intimidation by the Armada.

The Battlecube class is made for only one thing: Defense. This massive vessel barely moves at sublight speeds, and cannot use slipstream travel. It travels almost entirely using transdimensional gateways. The Battlecube class boasts thousands of weapons and solid defenses, and has a gigantic slipfighter capacity as well.

IC: Admiral Rose sipped at his coffee again, and turned to look at the woman standing in his doorway, Vice Admiral Harriet Hauser had been a good friend of his for the longest time. He and Harriet had been promoted to Captain at the same time, respectively commanding the KAR-30, and the KAR-45. The only reason she wasn't an Admiral like him was that the KAR already had enough people holding the rank of Admiral, and none looked ready to retire. Now it looked like she might never make the rank of Admiral "Harriet" he said "It looks bad, doesn't it?" She nodded simply "Yessir, it does look bad. If a fight breaks out we won't make it out of this in very good shape" Admiral Rose nodded "But most of our enemies won't come out with all of their ships either" Harriet sighed "Well, we should hope nothing goes wrong. Something will go wrong, but let's pray for it"

The Xanthalian fleet has arrived on the outskirts of the Relafia system. Xanthalian transports are now arriving and forming up to be escorted by the Xanthalian ships. The Xanthalian government wishes to take the time to recommend that the blockading ships not fire on the Xanthalian fleet or block its path lest unpleasantness result.

Ianos Skeelzot stood on the bridge of the Heavy Cruiser Tiamat, staring intently at the starmap displayed before him. Directly infront of them was the Xanthalian Aramada, recently arrived and forming up for their blockade run. Beyond them, the mass of Kechan battleships and, finally, the core New Xanthal worlds. He knew the Arenumbergians were out there somewhere, but frankly he didn't care. Arenumberg was a weak country militarily, more concerned with the welfare of its people than the rights of its allies. His brother, Grand Prince Baad Skeelzot, had ordered him to the edge of the Skeelzania system to support New Xanthal if the need arose. Now that the Xanthals had arrived, Ianos knew he actually had a chance to follow out that command. Activating his neck-comm, he gave his orders.

"Navigation, put us into shadowing distance of the Xanthal Armada. If the Kechans make a move, we must be ready to support them. Comm, beam orders to the rest of the fleet."

Two "Yes m'lord"s answered him. Below is feet the deck trembled slightly as the ship adjusted its alignment for the Jump. Then a lurch, a flash, and now only 3000 kilometers seperated them from the rearmost Xanthal ship. On their flanks, 20 more of the characteristic energy ripples of a Tachyon Jumpdrive signified the arrival of the rest of the task force.

All they could do now was wait for one of the super powers to make a move.

Any word from the High Command?" he asked "No" she shook her head "Then we shall carry out our order, and maintain the full force of the blockade "Yessir" she said, and left to see to her duties. Admiral Rose waited untill she was gone, then sat the report down on his desk. He leaned forward and removed his Officer's cap as he trembled "God help us" he whispered to himself.

Onboard the Renewed Valor

"Captain, we have a large number of ships entering system, approximatly 200 ships of war."

He sat there in silence, they outnumbered the ships in the blockade about 2 to 1, but throughout history, many commanders had beaten worse odds than that.

"Sir, it looks like they'll come upon the Kechian ships first, what are your orders?"

The Captain didn't envy the position he was in, either he ran and saved thousands of Commonwealth lives, or he stayed and enforced the blockade, which would result in massive casualties, but was the right thing to do.

"Move us towards the Kechian line, we are going to back them up."

The HCBG moved away from the blazing inferno that was the sun, towards something that the Captain knew would end up hotter than gigantic fusion reaction behind him.

The International Defense Initiative will be ripped apart. Your nation will fall and, most likely, so will ours. Do not send us all to our doom for the sake of what is 'right'. Terra Alliance: OOC: IC of course, we want you to back off entirely, but OOC I'd recommend that if you intend to fight us you stay behind the Kechans. OOC: Actually, check the specs for the DSX attack crusier.

The Wrath of Achilles is the most heavily armed starship launched by the Commonwealth, and her arsenal includes the latest in extreme-range kill vehicles as well as the usual suite of offensive and defensive missiles, AP guns, and PDLs. Additionally, the new DSA's distinctive, knife-like profile gives her a tiny sensor cross-section, making her nearly impossible for foes to detect. And any enemy who does manage to engage her will find that reactive shielding and cold plasma armor make the Wrath of Achilles exceptionally resilient and damage-resistant, while her lack of entry points (access to the ship is through a single, heavily fortified airlock) leaves the ship nearly invulnerable to boarding raids.

I've applied this reactive shield tech to all my ships, this came from allsystems.org, it should be cannon.

"I don't want bloodshed, or to tear the IDI apart, but I've got my order. I've been ordered to mount, and hold a blockade here, and I'll do so, even if I must die in so doing. If you want peace, stop"

The TA ships recieved a swift response, the Kechan Comms Officer was obviousley relieved:

"Yeah. I've got word from Admiral Rose that y'all can leave if you want to. We're the only ones who need to die here"

The Captain recieved the Kechian comm, they were right, they were far from the Systems Commonwealth, and they had no vested interest in New Xanthal, but it would be cowardly to abandon the Kechans now. And the Argosy did not make cowardly officers.

Terra Alliance: OOC: That's great, but we're talking about phasers and disrupters here. Your defensive weapons will be useless against everything but our torpedos, and your shields won't last long against our energy weapons. After they're gone, your armor will be cut through in seconds. Andromeda tech., souped up or not, is still Andromeda tech. It's meant for a universe where energy weapons don't get much better than lasers.

IC: The Xanthalian fleet moves forward slowly towards the Kechan fleet of Andromedas. Though the Kechan ships were all of non-combat design by Xanthalian standards, there were enough of them to pose a grave risk. The AI on the lead Xanthalian ship quietly predicts that fifteen to twenty-five percent of the Xanthalian ships will be lost before all the enemy starships are eliminated if it comes to all-out battle. And that's if no reinforcements arrived for the enemy.

OOC: The shields are designed to stand up to AP cannons, which are basically fire concentrated balls of anti-matter/matter, more or less what a photon torpedo is. I wouldn't knock the shields and armor capabilities of the ships quite that low against phasers, plus the offensive missiles hold 20 megaton payloads and travel at near light-speed, so the offensive capabilites are no joke either...

"The Xanthalians are advancing on the blockade m'lord. The Terrans don't seem to be leaving, and will most likely fight alongside with the Kechans."

Ianos frowned. The Terrans were only fielding thirty ships, but that was more than his task force. The Xanthals and Kechans would most likely engage and obliterate one another, but he'd probalby end up facing any auxiliaries. "Very well Intel, keep me informed. Helm, have the task force match speed with the Armada, keep us within shadowing range."

"Another thing, m'lord. Sensors have picked up several exits from FTL travel on the far side of the planets. Theres evidence it was with Tachyon drives."

Tachyon drives. Ianos only knew of two nations using the primitive things, and his was one of them. The other were a short, grey skinned race. "Those are the gnomes then. Bandalok is up to something, but theres no hope of second-guessing those zealots. Keep me informed."

"Yes m'lord."

Ianos's eyes rose to gaze out of the bridge viewport, and watched as the Xanthal ships gained speed. Beyond them he could see the points of lights that signified a Kechan warship. Lets hope Skeelzania's first naval engagement isn't a disaster, he thought.

The Xanthalian fleet proceeds without flinching, not returning even a warning shot. Every ship raises its shields, and the Xanthalian fleet locks in its targets. They are committed now, all it will take is one shot from the Kechans. As the fleet closes to 100,000 kilometers of the Kechan line, all fifteen thousand of its slipfighters are launched. Onboard the Renewed Valor

"Captain, we have five craft coming from the planet, they are taking up firing positions behind us."

He had watched the warning shot, and he also saw the Xanthal fleet completely ignore it. That did not bode well for the Commonwealth or the Kechan fleet, he stood in silence.

"Inform the aft GDF's to watch our six if they come at us from the rear, and tell the slipfighters that they will screen for missiles forward of our position."

And he waited...

You're still free to maintain a presence and participate, I'm just letting you know in advance that you won't have as much attention as the others will in this RP. Not to say I'll ignore you by any means, just don't expect to get enrolled in the greater plot of things.

Two Bandalok Claw Destroyers, still cloaked, manuever close beneath a Kechian warship. So close, that any fire from the two destroyers would - from any other ship - seem to have been shot from the Kechians.

"Torpedo tubes are ready, master", stated the grey skinned, gnomish, weapons engineer.
Master Waff's tiny, spider-black eyes twinkled with delight, "Fire."

Two shining vollies of Antimatter Torpedos shot out from underneath the large Kechain ship and headed straight toward the advancing Xanthal and Skeelzanian fleet.

The torpedos are shot down by Xanthalian phasers and the lead Xanthalian ship hails the Bandalok vessels. "We can see you, morons. I recommend that you not try that again."

Ianos did not like what he was seeing. Infront of him the Kechans were launching a third warning shot, and to his rear an unknown amount of ships had been detected in FTL travel. He had no doubt the Xanthals could annialate whatever the Kechans threw at them, but he didn't relish the prospect of having his fleet smashed between them and whoever was coming up behind his ships.

"All ships, be aware than an unknown force is approaching us from the rear. We don't know if these are Xanthals, Kechans, or someone else entirely. Be on your guard."

The new Kechan vessels were detected on long-range sensors, and 100 more Xanthalian warships are dispatched, including ten Eclipse class vessels. The remainder of the Xanthalian fleet is instructed to stand by if more enemy ships arrive. The ETA for the Xanthalian reinforcements is only ten minutes. Back in the Relafia system, the Xanthalian fleet continues forward, once again completely ignoring the warning shot. Two transmissions are sent out as they close to 50,000 kilometers.

To the Kechan fleet:
"Be aware that we have identified two Bandalok Claw Destroyers in position among your fleet. We think they may intend to start hostilities. Stay sharp."

To the Skeelzania fleet:
"Those ships are Kechan Andromedas. We have called in another one hundred ships to match them. By the time either set of reinforcements arrive, we will most likely be already engaged in battle; so make sure you keep an eye on them. Our reinforcements will beat the Kechans here by two minutes, only by virtue of the fact that they're closer. Check your fire and do not fire on Xanthalian ships. I know that this is your nation's first naval engagement, so good luck. Remember your training and stay on-the-ball. You'll do fine, and we'll keep an eye out for you. XAS-251 out."

King Doran fretted with the pig headedness of both sides but at least the Xanthalian dictator answered him, the Kechan Emperess had never responded to either messege sent. He wasn't worried about his fleet that was incoming to the blockade system, they were incapable hands, the real problem was the huge mess devoloping. This would wreak havic on the space lanes and among tradisinal allies, besides the IDI, both Xanthal and Kecha were traditional Teritoran Allies. The war that devoloping would be an nightmare.

From the outside you can't tell, but the Xanthalian ships have become a flurry of activity. Messages on the actions of the Kechans are being sent back and forth between the ships of the Xanthalian fleet and the government. Was this what it seemed? Or merely a trick by the Kechans? The Xanthalian fleet continues forward, but slows to match the speed of the retreating Kechans, maintaining an equal distance between the fleets. Tactically, though, they are as unflinching and alert as ever.

The Xanthalian commanders might well have been using neural linkups, their thoughts were so similar. The Kechans could gain no tactical advantage against the Xanthalian fleet, no matter what they did there were only three feasible possibilities. First, that the Kechans intended to run straight at the Xanthalian fleet in a suicide run to do as much damage as possible before they were destroyed. Second, that they were forming up to retreat. Third, they were preparing to attack the New Xanthalian homeworld from orbit. The Xanthalians hope to the Universe that it's the second one, but they can't take any chances. They close up the gap between themselves and the Kechan ships, moving in to 10,000 kilometers. "Attention Kechan fleet. If you attack any New Xanthalian target, it will be an act of war against the Socialist Republic of Xanthal."

The Kechan ships began moving around Relafia IV, to the side opposite the Xanthalians. They did not appear to be preparing to attack the planet, as they were to low for truly effective sighting. "Good. Send five thousand fighters past the Teritoran line. I want them ready to give the Kechans serious hell if they start firing."

OOC: Kecha: I beg to differ. The Xanthalian reinforcements alone could take your entire fleet. That's the power of capital ships. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: You really need to form a combat force of combat ships. Andromedas are not good in a fight. I don't care how much you modify them. Now, if you were using Glorious Heritage class ships It'd be a different story, but the Andromeda class only shares the GH spaceframe. Other than that, it's a totally different ship.

IC: The Xanthalian ships follow the Kechans until they reach their own fleet, then they simply fall in with the rest of the Xanthalians. They launch their own slipfighters, 5,000 more, which join the rest of the frontrunning Xanthalian fighters. The 5,000 fighters that were sent to run the Teritoran line break through and head around the planet, taking offensive positions so they could do maximum damage to the Kechan fleet if they started firing.

OOC: So now we have the Kechan fleet on the far side of the planet in orbit, and 5,000 Xanthalian fighters covering them. On the other side is the Teritoran fleet, and just beyond that fleet is the full, 300-warship, Xanthalian force.

OOC: I was asleep, so up to this time just assume my fleet was continuing to follow the Xanthals.

Ianos was faced with two equally unpleasant choices. The 1st Kechan fleet had moved behind Relafia IV, effectivly blocking any shot his fleet could make. Behind him, the Kechan reinforcements were advancing on them, apparently to link up with the 1st fleet or maybe attack the Xanthals in a pincher move. He could attempt to close in on the 1st fleet and engage them if need be, or he could fight a rearguard action against the Kechan reinforcements if he had too. Withdrawing wasn't an option.

"Navigation, is it possible to plot a jump below the Xanthal and Teritoran fleets to get ourselves behind Relafia IV?"

"It is possible m'lord, but we'd most likely lose a ship to a collision with at least one of the fleets, if not both of them." So much for that approach.

"Very well. Comm, order all ships to turn 180 degrees and face the Kechan ships. Do not fire unless fired upon. Were not sure if the Xanthals are going to allow them to pass through their fleet or not, so try not to get between a Xanthal and Kechan battleship."

He stood up and cleared his throat "Execute the battle-plan" The Kechan Andromeda-Class ships, using the speed they had built up from repeatedly passing around Relafia IV as a tool, quickly pumped their drives up to the maximum speed they were capable of, and plowed around the planet at enormous speeds. Ignoring the Xanthalian cargo ships for the moment, they quickly moved around the planet with all weapons, and shields up for combat. The Kechan AIs estimate that they will, if succesfull in this maneuver, be behidn their Xanthalian opponents in 20 seconds. This maneuver is being used in an attempt to incread the casualties inflicted on the Xanthalian force in the initial srokes of the battle. The Kechan Slipfighters moved to hit any nearby Xanthalian Slipfighters.

OOC: I hope I'm doing this right.
Xanthal
08-03-2004, 05:22
The Xanthalian slipfighters are on the enemy's six within five seconds, targets locked and evasive action in progress. The Xanthalian fleet, prepared for such a move, moves fluidly to keep a bead on the Kechan fleet. The more quick and agile Sabre class vessels spring out of the fleet and cover the more sluggish Eclipse class ships as the Dreadnaughts turn to keep their targets fore. The Super Dreadnaughts take formation with the Battlecube and Eclipse class ships. The maneuver is rehearsed and perfect. The Xanthalian fleet has almost completely nullified the Kechan advantage and obtained an optimal firing position. The Kechan fleet now has two choices: To use their speed to retreat and regroup or to start the fight at a disadvantage.

OOC: At that speed, you're not going to able to maneuver. Andromeda class ships have embarassingly large turn radiuses. That's why they're not warships. They're big, heavy, and most of their weight is just dead in combat.

They intened to shoot up, and over the Xanthalian ships, then away from Relafia IV.

08-03-2004, 05:51
With the first shot, the battle is joined. The torpedos impact on the shields of several dozen Xanthalian ships and the Xanthalian fleet opens fire on the Kechans. Enough slipfighters stay back to defeat the smaller number of Kechan fighters, and the rest move forward to attack the Kechan Andromedas in deadly swarms. With all weapons pre-powered, the Kechan fleet is met with over a hundred thousand torpedoes, phaser beams, and disrupter bolts immediately. The Xanthalian slipfighters that had stayed back meet their Kechan counterparts with a full deployment of their cluster missiles, more than enough to take out most of the Kechan fighters' shields. The main Xanthalian fleet is on its toes quickly, adjusting shield power to block all the incoming attacks from the tightly-packed Kechan fleet. Their barrage of fire is well-targeted to destroy the frontmost Kechan ships.

"Jesus Christ!" was all Ianos could mutter as the Xanthal fleet behind him erupted. His ships had not had sufficent time to reverse themselves, so were still facing the Kechans who had only minutes ago zipped by them. Quickly regaining his composer, he whipped around to the Comm officer and gave his orders.

"All ships, battle is joined repeat battle is joined. Designating target Kechan ship, all vessels concentrate fire on designated." The Skeelzanian fleet, already edgy after the pre-battle manuevering, repsonded as soon as they received the target. The characteristic blue ion trails of the Dracos main guns lanced out through space, while the Wyrms opened fire with their six railguns, each lobbing a half-ton slug at nearly 20 km/s at the enemy.

Now the hard part was to get out of the way before the return fire slammed into them. "All ships, hard turn to port, accelerate to the battles flank and descemd out of the Xanthal's cone of fire. Maintain fire on target ship as long as firing-arc permits; rake the enemy fleet as soon as this becomes impossible."

The fleet obeyed, their turrets pivoting to keep their target in sight as the ships accelerated and ducked underneath the Xanthal fire which continued to streak towards the Kechan fleet.

OOC: There's a method to that, and you're going to lose more than a few ships because of it. I tried to warn you... Your ships are going too fast. The frontrunning ships will break up, and the ships behind them will be destroyed because they can't turn.

IC: The KAR ships took a beating right off, and allmost immediately lost their Flagship. The KAR-25, along with around 29 other ships, were either destroyed, or knocked adrift, and derelict. 45 others took some good damage, but kept going. Some shuttles left a few of the crippled ships, and sought to dock with the ships that were still moving. Admiral Rose could not be contacted on any channels, and Vice Admiral Hauser was missing as well. Command then fell to Admiral Tanya Jeager, who had been at the back of the formation of ships. Admiral Jeager could only think of saving the remainder of the Kechan forces, so she ordered about 45 of her ships to open fire on the Skeelzanian forces with any weapons they could bring to bear, and the remaining 100 began firing continuousley into the Xanthalian ships. The Kechan Slipfighters, meanwhile, were taking horrendous losses.

OOC: Exact stats on the Slipfighters in my next post. Gotta' dash.

At the edge of the system, a slip-stream event could be spotted by any one who cared to look. Three Thelasi fleets, 60 ships in all, exited a slip event. With grace seemingly defying their size, the fleet turned, heading twoards the battle area.

As they arrive, they halted, not firing, not moving, the fleet's Zero Fighters moving out infront of the ships, their Point Defence Drones sitting silently, waiting.

The Xanthalian forces do better, but they take their share of losses under the heavy Kechan fire, despite the fact that they have better ships. The Xanthalians lose two Intrepid class vessels and an Andromeda, as well as a Dreadnaught and three Sabre class ships. Meanwhile, the Eclipse class vessels have come about, and open up with their tens of thousands of weapons batteries on the Kechans. The fleet Dreadnaughts begin employing ion and plasma cannons on the more stubborn targets. The Xanthalian slipfighters are doing well against the Kechans, mostly because of their far greater numbers. Still, the fact that they can only take one hit is damning. Over 200 have been lost.

The fleet hails the lead Thelasi ship. "Be aware that you have entered an active battlezone. State your intentions."

The response to the Arenumberg transmission is annoyed. "What? We're defending your allies, in case you haven't noticed. Our treaty gives us the right to be here, and it also obligates you to help us. Either give us a hand or stay out of it. We didn't start this war; but we're going to end it, whether you like it or not. XAS-251 out." The transmission is cut.

The Skeelzanian fleet continued their break-neck manuever out of the center of the battle, attempting to dodge Kechan fire and hoping their armor offered some protection; their turrets continued to blaze a way away at the Andromedas.

On the bridge of the Tiamat, Ianos shielded his eyes with his forearm as the ship infront of his, one of the Wyrms, caught a barrage to their side and detonated. As they swerved to dodge the debris field, Ianos listened to the steady ba-chum, ba-chum of the autocannon turrets blazing away at Kechan slipfighters. "I suppose that makes the fourth ship lost in this engagement. No matter, Wyrms are cheap."

"M'lord! The Arenumbergs have arrived on the battlefield! They're targeting the Kezzccherg-" the communication crackled as the first volly from the New Breseldenberg zipped overhead towards the Kechan fleet.

"Where the hell did they get that thing!? Whatever. Comm! Relay new orders to the fleet."

The Skeelzanian ships turned hard to port, bring themselves around to the flank of the Kechan main fleet, drawing the Andromedas tasked with thier direction out of the main thrust. Another Wyrm exploded.

IC: The Kechan ships continue to take a nasty beating, and lose another 15 Andromeda-Class ships. Their Slipfighters continue to fight their Xanthalian counterparts, and suffer something like 60% losses due to lack of reall experience. They fight, however, with the naked courage of hopeless soldiers. The Kechan ships begin pouring on all possible speed and making a course away from the Xanthalians, obviousley trying to break off the fight. Firng back with all they had as they did so.

Where once there was nothing but empty space emerged fifty-four ships in a blinding white light that signified their reversion from FTL.

Onboard the bridge of the Sphinx class Super Dreadnaught Tyrannous Rex Vice Admiral Mark Frasier was a beacon of Calm and authority. Among the chaos that infested his bridge crew as it attempted to assimilate the huge amount of information being gathered by the fleets sensors.

"Navigation get the wedges up, Fleet-Coms Have the fleet assemble in a formation best suited for interception of enemy fighters and torpedoes, but be ready to engage with our missile pods if the opportunity presents itself." He said as the bridge calmed at his statement "Coms Get me the Queens Flagship...My Queen The Wicks Naval Assets are here to support you...And to uphold the Alliance!"

The unmistakable wedges appear above and below every one of the wicks ships as they begin to accelerate towards the battle. These bands of energy are indestructible. The capital units are able to roll to present a wall to the enemy deflecting fire (Though it takes time for the massive dreadnaught which are over 2 km in length, the smaller units such as tincans can roll incredibly fast making fights between light units quite beautiful affairs, keep in mind lasers travel the speed of light, and advance computers can target a ship when its exposed...I love future tech)

A cheer went up on every bridge of the surviving Skeelzanian ships as the Kechans broke off and retreated. Enemy fire still streaked towards them, but it was not the massive amounts of energized-death present at the start of the battle. Slowly, the fleet decellerated as they awaited more orders.

The bridge of the Tiamat was a flurry of activity, as messages zipped between the Comms station, SKZHC back at Solomon, and the rest of the fleet. Ianos had settled into his chair, visibly relieved that the battle had ended. Their losses had been relativly heavy, though coming no where near the carnage expirienced by the Xanthal and Kechans. Of the 6 Dracos and 15 Wyrms, 8 of the Wyrms had been lost to enemy fire, and one Draco, the Jabberwock was also destroyed when it became the target of a concentrated Kechan attack. Now the next act was to begin, one that was being most anticipated back home.

"All ships are hereby lowered to Level 3 alert. Wyrms are assigned picket duty to the rest of the fleet. All Dracos are to proceed to the debris field and scoure it for any useful salvage. Tiamat out."

"It has been over a day now and the Kechans still have not made any offers of peace, or even apology. We are forced to conclude that they are mustering their forces for another assault. Our sensors show that the Kechan fleet has returned to its own space. I am ordering the Xanthalian fleet at Relafia to the current location of the Kechan fleet in the Sol system for a preemptive assault. This is a big step, and we will understand if our allies do not wish to get involved. The danger will be immense. However, do not lose hope. Our fleets are strong, and the Kechans have inferior starships. With your help, I am sure that we will triumph. Be aware that this is truly a war now. Once the Kechan fleet is gone, we will send in ground troops. When that happens, losses will be astronomical. What the Kechans lack in space they make up for on the ground. Since it is unsafe to bombard Earth orbitally though, ground combat is our best option. We will need your help, all of you, to ensure our victory planetside. It is not pleasing for me to ask you to send your ships and soldiers to fight and die for this cause, but it must be done. If you wish to stay beside us in this next leg of the war, contact XAS-251. The Admiral will give you your orders. He is well-trained and intelligent, and I have the utmost confidence in his ability. Understand one thing, before you choose. The Xanthalian fleet meanwhile is busy with maintenance and resupply. The area is filled with cargo ships, transports, and maintenance ships. There is also one small ship on the edge of the fleet that is of no known design, but is clearly broadcasting a Xanthalian signal. It is almost surprising that Xanthal has been able to mobilize so quickly, but perhaps it is not so strange. After all, they always keep their ships crewed, and it's not like there was anything going on before this.
Many of the cargo vessels are attached to the warships, transferring torpedos and such aboard, while the transports are pulling some last-minute crew switchouts aboard some of the Xanthalian ships. It looks rather chaotic, but it is really quite organized. As the fleet is vulnerable in this state, half the warships stay on guard on the perimeter at all times.

Message from XAS-251 to the Pablicostan fleet:
"Hello to you as well. Feel free to take resupply from one of our freighters if you need it. I don't imagine you'll need much since you weren't involved in the first battle, but you're welcome to take what you will."

Thanks for the offer XAS-251, but we have several of our own SuperFreeghters lingering arround. We will be taking fuel supply from them and will allow our crew to rest for a few hours before we continue. Our fighter vessles, Swarmers will be doing flight patterns throughout the stop, to prepare their pilots for engagement. We can also offer our SuperCarriers to put up a light protection feild which will cover your docking ships easily if you wish. Commander Francks Out.

Arenumburg, we can send a few recon vesels back arround to check up on the laggers if you wish, is it possible they may have been engaged? Over

Ianos watched as various fleets warped out and others restocked themselves. His glace traveled back to the distress message they were receiving from the Kechan ship. The Arenumbergians were still moving on its position, but he gambled his Dracos could get there first.

"Attention fleet. Tiamat, Niddhogg and Azhi Dahaki will advance on the Kechan distress beacon and prepare for a boarding action. All Wyrms and remaining Dracos are assigned guard duty. Tiamat out."

The three cruisers again powered up their engines and began cautiously making their way through the debris field. Turning to his Marine Commander, Ianos gave the order to 'wake up' the marines from their suspended animation. Skeelzanian O.R.C. troopers were notoriously unstable mentally, and he did not enjoy the prospect of having 7 foot monsters running around on his ship, even for a little while.

In front of them loomed the Kechan ship. Much of its surface had been scarred by weapons fire, but the marines were confident they could cut through.

By this time the cruisers had taken up positions around the Andromeda. While the ships have sizeable marine contingments, they weren't designed for combat boarding actions. Luckily the ship wasn't much in the way of combat ready, allowing the Dracos plenty of time to get in a suitable location that allowed them to use their cargo loading tubes as boarding chutes.

In the main staging area, the O.R.C.s were lining up. Only 40 of the 150 aboard had been activated, and this was still enough to make Ianos worried as he watched from Hanger control. He had personally pushed for their development, but the thought of a 7 foot pyscho wielding a 50 caliber assualt rifle was still disturbing.

"M'lord, we've attached to the hull of the Kechan ship over a suspected passage. Shall we blow the charges?"

"Yes. Wait till the status of the boarding chutes are confirmed, then send the marines across."

Though Ianos couldn't hear or see them, he knew the charges placed on the Kechan hull had just blown, allowing access to the ships interior. Twenty seconds went by, and then the green light above the tubes went on. The doors opened and the marines charged through, the sound of their power armor on metal plating echoing through the hanger.

OCC: I was wondering what happened to her (im assuming its a her) too. Last contact I had with her was an email about a week ago concerning looting some technology from this thread.

And as far as Skeelzanian Diplomacy is concerned, if your a disabled ship with advanced technology, your meat for the Principality. We desperatly want more advanced technology, especially armor and jump drives. A disabled Kechan ship with a still functional crew? Mmmmm imagine the looting possibilites. Besides, as far as I can tell the Kechans aren't human and are thus below us. If you happen to know that they aren't I'd appreciate it.
Xanthal
18-03-2004, 04:33
OOC: As far as I know they're human... Mabye I'm wrong. What I do know is that you do not want to piss Kecha off. She will smite a nation as small as yours. If you start looting ships that are trying to surrender or are disabled without permission, you'll become an enemy of Xanthal as well. Xanthal is picky about conflict. They have a strict code about what is and is not permissable, and they show plenty of quarter to their enemies. If one of their allies starts messing with that code, they'll make a point of hurting them unless they're absolutely vital to their cause. Skeelzania is not.
18-03-2004, 04:45
OOC: Well if it makes you feel any better, I don't intend to pull a Soviet on them and execute those trying to escape destruction.

IC: Ianos switched channels his commlink. As soon as it became clear as what his ships were duing, a burst of protest from several of the powers had reached the ship. Reception was patchy due to the debris field, but the general gist of it had gotten accross. Any "war crimes" against the Kechans would result in annilation of his fleet. "Suppose I should test the O.R.C.s and see how well they handle prisoners" he thought to himself.

"Attention disable Kechan ship. You have been boarded by Skeelzanian Marines. Lay down any arms you have onboard and surrender, our troops will not fire unless fired upon."

He wasn't particulary optimistic about the "self defense" part, the O.R.C.s had a history of tearing their opponents apart. Best to send a message to them too.

"Alright you reengineered pinheads listen up. Start shooting only if they shoot first. Any one of you blows away an unarmed Kechan, you'll be sent to the gnomes and they can do all the dirty little things they do with you. Do you get that?" A jumble of grunts and "yesser" answered him, which was as close he was going to get to an out right acknowledgement.

After we launch our attack there won't be many (if any) Kechan warships left to be repaired. Those that do go to your space to repair will be leaving the battleground and will probably miss the whole thing, arriving back just in time to be useless. We're going straight for the head here. Since we obviously don't want to orbitally bombard Earth under any circumstances (say hello to about twenty pissed off powerful space nations), and since doing so would inflict unacceptable civilian casualties anyway, ground forces are the best and only feasible option. We knew that for such an attack we'd need help, so we asked for it. And we got it. Now our victory is assured. Don't get me wrong, we'll take heavy casualties, but Kecha's ground forces will eventually fall to our combined forces. We've also got some high-tech tricks up our sleeves to help us out too.

Solomon, Greater Skeelzania System

Within the bowels of the royal palace, the Grand Prince and his remaing military advisors plotted how best to assist the Xanthal invasion of Kecha. Baad Skeelzot leaned over the display table, taking stock of his forces. The bulk of their navy was still deployed around Relafia IV under the command of his brother, but they would be of marginal use anyway. The railguns of the Dracos were not something that one offhandly shoots at a planet. The bulk of the Skeelzanian infantry however were still on Solomon, waiting for deployment orders. There were also enough ships to ferry at least some to Sol.

Turning to his aid de camp, the Prince gave his orders. Within minutes that were broadcasted across the planet to the various installations.

"Attention Skeelzanian Ground Forces. The 1st and 2nd FS divisions are hereby activated. They will board the battleship Typhon and accompyning ships of the 3rd fleet. The fleet will then depart to rendevous with the Xanthal main strike force at Relafia if possible. If the rendevous is missed, proceed at all possible to the Sol system and await further orders. SKZHC over and out."

Most of the troops had been expecting this order and had already loaded much of their heavy equipment. All that was now required was for the actual troops to board. They would probably miss the rendevous, but they could still attempt to catch up.

Urm... I have a minor question: what was the point of that? I'm just sending in my armies to offer refugeeship for the inferiors and leaving. I'm not trying to shoot at anyone... :?

Besides, even though ties are cut with both Xanthal (it's a repressive commie mess) and New Xanthal (it's a racist mess), and even if the executive and most of the legislative are in support of action, we're not stupid. We won't attack but we might if you go away...

Also, we're taking the refugees, but we're not going to support all of their actions (although we probably will condone most of them). So even if the refugees happen to steal an out-of-date Gundam from a museum whose management was too idiotic to take the mobile system out, and even if they happen to attack New Xanthal, and even if the centrist government of Tiburon happens to secretly be supportive militarily *cough cough major plot twist I was planning revealed*, you still can't prove that we are supporting them. (Because our military will be using Mobile Suits from a factory that was recently in the hands of terrorists whose organization is gone. But no one knows that yet.

So, yes, we are not going to shoot at anyone. Yet...

Do you understand the concept of refuge? If someone leaves a country or is offered refugeeship by a representative of Tiburon, and can prove that it is due to repressive government, then he/ she is granted full refuge by Tiburon. We're not forcing anything on anyone. We're offering refugeeship. We do it all the time. Civilized nations tend to do so.

XNN flash report:
Zelda Zabertini, the Dictator elect of Xanthal, has moved into office four days ahead of her legal entitlement to her position. In an official statement to an XNN reporter, she gave her reason. "I am appalled at the aggressive actions of Telemachus Rhade, the Fleet Admiral of the Armada. I am taking office effective immediately, and I am ending this madness. I have no official power yet, but I have unofficial power. I will not allow my nation to be dragged into a war."
Shortly afterward, Telemachus Rhade issued a formal refusal to acknowledge her authority and voiced his intentions to continue the attack on Kecha. In the mean time, closed transmissions between Armada vessels and command centers are indicating that they are beginning to split, some captains in favor of the unofficial Dictator, others preferring to follow the official power of Fleet Admiral Rhade. On Aellis V, thousands of protestors and counter-demonstrators lined the streets in support or denial of the power of the Dictator Elect. At this point, it seems unlikely that the Xanthalian forces will be able to carry out a successful invasion...

A few warning shots are fired within the Xanthalian fleet, and a flurry of coded transmissions ensues. Without a word, one hundred and twenty of the gathered Xanthalian ships, including their flagship XAS-251, go to slipstream, heading back to Xanthalian territory. XAS-157 immediately announces it is taking command of the invasion fleet, but one hundred more ships power down their weapons and engines, leaving only eighty starships headed forward. These ships continue on for a minute, then stop, turning around and communicating with the halted ships behind them. It seems as though the Xanthalian invasion may not proceed at all.

A collective sigh of temporary relief ripples through the Cyberutopian conscience as Wings One and Two returned to Cyberutopian space in a blue flash. They may not have to engage their Kechan friends after all.

Ianos watched as the last marine reboarded the Tiamat and the tubes retracted from the Kechan vessel. As the cruiser powered up its engines to rejoin the task force, he pondered the unfolding events. The Xanthal armada had split, with most of its ships returning home and only a minority carrying on the war to Kecha. Xanthal's various allies were backing down with relief, and Arenumberg had just recalled everything. This left only Skeelzania and a few other Alliance powers at Relafia IV with any amount of force. If the opposing powers decided to come against New Xanthal in force, he doubted his combined fleet would stop them.

Looking back over the central bay, he surveyed the few Kechans the marines had brought back with them. Sitting cross legged and handcuffed in the center of the room, most of them injured but being seen to, they seemed a sorry bunch. Ianos wondered what he would be ordered to do with them now. None of the other ships in the fleet had found anything salvagable in the field, and they didn't have time to town the Andromeda back to Solomon. Sighing, he turned back and issued orders to the fleet.

"All ships are to regroup around Relafia IV. Continue monitoring all channels, try to pick up something useful. Await further orders."
