Possible way of calculating military size?

I'm fairly sure this can go in this topic area. In order to figure out the size of my military I use a simple proportion based on the United State's sized military. The amount of people in the United States enlisted in the military is approximately 0.47% of the population. if the United State's population is 210million, a simple proportion can be set up. 0.47/100 = 987,000/210,000,000. Therefore the United States military is about 1,000,000 strong.

I used the same process for my nation. 0.47/100 = blank/9,000,000

0.47 times 9,000,000 = 4,230,000 divided by 100 = 42,300

This would be the size of my active military if defence was a secondary priority.

If defense is a first priority for your nation instead of 0.47% use 0.57% to figure out your military's size.

If defense is a third priority for your nation use 0.37% instead of 0.57% to figure out the size of your military.

Keep in mind not all troops in your military are front line troops. To figure out how many troops are transport pilots, supply managers and such subtract about 50-60% depending if it is "wartime" or "peacetime".

For example- I have a nation that defense is a third priority or less. My population is of 9,000,000. I would use the proportion of 0.37/100 = blank/9,000,000. This means my military has currently 33,300 participants. If you subtract 50% from 33,300 it means 16650 are not combat troops. That leaves me with about 16650 that are combat troops. I hope this has been helpful.
