(OOC: I'm hoping to provide a bridge between myself in the modern world to eventually the futuristic world, if only in a primitive sense at first, if this is possible, and I'm open to suggestions on how this can be done)

The Roman Free Press, February 23, 2004

ROME(W)- Emperor Paul XII has announced today that he is going initiate a spending program designed to get RomeW into space.

"You know what it has been said- 'space- the final frontier'. Space is a diverse and fascinating place," said Paul via a teleconference in RomeW from the state of Joccia, where he is currently on a diplomatic mission. "For the future of the Roman people it is our duty to explore space."

Paul admits that the Romans are probably "generations" away from their plans, but he says he would like to see RomeW set up cosmic relations in the near future and have its own space colonies and maybe even planets.

"Our scientists have said they have discovered UFO's and other planets, so we believe there may be life out there. If so, we'd like to communicate with them and build relations and alliances."

After a bloody revolt by the BitingRealitans and the still on-going tensions in Joccia, a Roman ally, the Roman state has stated that they are looking for some "positive news" to lift Roman spirits, and public opinion regarding Paul's announcement is overwhelmingly positive. Close to 96% of all Romans (including Paul's future electoral adversary, Roman businessman Rodin Hartian) are in favour of the space program according to an independent poll conducted shortly after Paul's announcement, and 87% welcome this news after the struggles RomeW has faced in the past.

"Space may be the final frontier," Paul concluded, "but it is ripe for our exploration. So let's do it."

I wasn't planning on lifting off with a fleet immediately...I'm aware this takes time. Though my intent is to initiate a program to get into space, at least on a very primitive level, even if it will take a long, long time.

EDIT- (OOC: I also know very little about physics and technology in general...so I can't really get that detailed with stuff like this)

The crowd gathered around RomeW Astronomy Professor Urani Proletta inside the RomeW Observatory. Proletta was about to make history. In mere minutes, he was to open RomeW's cosmic communications in a bid to find new peoples in space.

"People of RomeW, today we make history. For far too long the Romans have been stuck on this planet when there's a whole Universe to explore! New peoples to interact with! New planets to see! New possibilities!"

The crowd sat in stunned silence, captivated by what Proletta had said. "We are aware that long-distance exploration may not be of our generation, but it will be soon. Today we open up inter-planetary communications from RomeW for the first time- all with the press of a button. After I press this button, this observatory will launch the first radio signals into space, which will be used for inter-planetary communications."

With that, Proletta pressed the button- and so RomeW's cosmic communications began.

*A Few Days later, A Aranamorian Carrier picked up these signals, and was intrigued...*

"AAS Leipzig To Command, we are picking up signals, and are dispatching a dropship and a wing of fighters to the source, they should take a few hours by long jump.."

"Command Here, Understand, and hope you dont get a wing of fighters shot down!"

"Hehehe, Launching now, and initiating their long-jump systems"

IC: Proletta jumped for joy when he heard the message. "We have a response! There is someone out there! Wow, that was quick."

Proletta went to the communications microphone to speak to the nation that responded to RomeW's signal. "Hello! We are the Empire of RomeW! We are a peaceful and compassionate nation who is just recently starting its own Space program and would like to start our own explorations and forge new cosmic alliances. Who are you and where are you located?"

Proletta stared like a giddy schoolchild awaiting the response.

OOC: Thank you for your acceptance. Warmly welcomed. As for the the transmission, it didn't have any message on it- it was just a signal we launched hoping that people would respond. It could have a generic "this is a RomeW message" on it, but that's it. It was nothing more than a standard call-out signal.

IC: "Hello! We are the Empire of RomeW! We have initiated our own Space program and are interested in space exploration and forming new alliances in space! We come in peace!" said a giddy Proletta.

"Thank you for your information about your stores. We will alert the Emperor about them and we will shop there for supplies. Thank you again for your kindness!"

Proletta immediately called Roman Emperor Paul XII to inform him of the space storefronts.

"Sir! Great news! RomeW has been welcomed in open arms in space! We even have an offer from a cosmic storefront to shop for supplies!", said Proletta.

"Very good Dr. Proletta. Let the storefront know that we are interested in doing business," said Paul.

"No problem. We are aware that we are 'primitive'," said Proletta.

As they went inside, Proletta began showing Callas the Romans' equipment. "Over here, we have our 20.6m radar dish designed for sending and receiving radio signals. It took RomeW over a year to build it. It is capable of light-speed telecommunications signals and we are working on creating faster signals."

Proletta then asked Callas, "what telecommunications device do you have? We would love to learn from higher technologies such as yourself."

Yes, well, we have a communications HQ building on our homeworld, the ethereal subspace bands are used to transmit large quantities of data to any receiver, large or small across our space, its fairly well encrypted, and can interface with such messages as your own, though, this technology has been used for so long, even the most experienced of our communication specialists would be lost to explain it to you.."

Approaching the target site, the WaveRider switched into pulse-jet mode, changing its sound from a rumbling roar to a high-pitched scream as it began to decelerate into the subsonic range. Obtaining a visual, the craft engaged reverse-thrust for its final approach, touching down almost like any oversized airplane- with the exception of the minor details that the back end glowed dull red and the ground around it was scorched and brittle. Klaxons began to sound as warning lights projected a safe perimeter. Suddenly, huge clouds of steam billowed with a loud hiss from the engine and cooling vents along the rear-delta surfaces.

A ramp descended from the forward underside, allowing the exit of two black-clad Spacers, one on either side of a large cylindrical translucent tank.

"Careful eugenics and retroviral engineering have produced the last two generations that are almost perfectly adapted to micro-g. For several generations now we have had enhancements necessary for cryostasis and environmental protections such as increased radiation resistance and muscle maintenance. Just reaching ubiquity in the population are polydactyly and pedoprehensility. Aside from the technologies used to accelerate our adaptation, we have what you see before you to allow us to still visit Earth when necessary- nearly self-contained respirators and biomechanical feedback systems. Related are permanent biomechanical interfaces such as titanium osteointegration to replace lost limbs and neurochip bridges to allow communication between artificial components and natural components of the body, such that an artificial appendage can be used just like a natural one. Cardio- and neuro-pacemakers are in common use, as well as entirely artificial organs of nearly every kind, with the notable exception of primary digestive organs. Therapuetic cloning is also widely used and well understood, allowing for the regrowing of some body parts if a prosthetic is not desired, better fusion between artificial and natural components, and immunity augmentation. Optical and nuclear resonance imaging have been developed to near peak efficiency and accuracy. Single-cell destruction via particle beams has also been perfected for non-invasive microsurgery."

[OOC: Kirk hasn't said anything yet, but sure he would love to go to the Medical school]

"First I would like to give a little presentation on space travel itself," Kirk explained. "In all reality it is a simple idea, all you need is a ship capable of going faster than the speed of light. For even though it is very fast, ti would take eyars to reach just another solar system. So once you have that done, it is a pretty easy ride. The dangers are unlimited. Have you heard of the Xan? If not I will tell you, the Xan are a race that thrive to conquer, they are extremely smart and clever. They are one of the most advanced races in the galaxy. They were a pain in our asses, to tell truth. They would destroy, or enslave many of our planets int he beginning. Then after a while, we learned their weaknesses, and they started ti back away."
He took a deep breath. "I don't want to get to far into it, but space travel is a very dangerous job. Anyways..." He took another breath. "I would love to tell your medical school about our medicine, and nanotechnology! Meanwhile someone else can tell you about the physics of a trans dimensional engine."

[OOC:Xan=Xan, I created this race for a book I wrote long before I new Nationstates existed.]

"Ok Xan 101." Kirk said. "I will give you a history of them. The Xan are an ancient race, they have been around longer, much longer than we ever have. ANother suprising fact about them is that they are not from our galaxy. They came here, for purpose of conquest. Spies and intelligence have told us that they were promised this land by their superiors, so they came here and thought it would be a piece of cake. But it turned out there were already races here, humans, and otherwise."

He took another breath.

"But unfortunately the races were primitive, and the Xan had little trouble enslaving, or killing a lot of them. Now your Earth is lucky, because it is on one of the most outer regions of the galaxy, so the Xan never paid much heed to come here. My planet though, Techon, was towards the center, and was a big target for them. They bombarded our cities, and killed thousands. We were at about the same technology level as you are now. So we fought them with all our might. We even began to build a quick fleet to evacuate us. Eventually we set a trap for them, we made it appear we were all evacutating Techon. The frigates and vessels all started to fly away from Techon, but we were still on the planet hiding. The Xan pusuid the frigates, only to find the entire fleet of them were a bomb, they completely wiped out the Xan fleet that was in our area."

Another Breath.

"They never came back to our planet again, and we used a lot of salvaged technology from their fleet, to speed up the process of ours."

He waited for this to sink in, then continued.

"The Xan are a race, but not technically. They are matters of energy, if you see them directly you see a glowing blue fog about the size of a human head. Now, when they came to our galaxy they had another problem, they couldn't live outside their ships in our galaxy, the particle compounds were different than what they needed to survive. They would literally dissolve within a matter of hours. So, they created robotic exoskeletons, that look like human bodies. They live inside the exoskeleton, and control its every word, and movement, like it was their own body. SO they depend on the exoskeleton to live, and if it it damaged beyond repair, such as a few bullet wounds to the chest, the Xan will die."

He breathed.

"So that was a weakness of theirs, that is their weakness, we used that against them just like we used the trap. We can fight the Xan now, they still have the advantage, but not as much."

He stopped talking for a while.

"And about that meeting with the medical scholl, I would love to go as soon as possible."

After clearing itself through RomeW space, the Khrrck delegation came in for a landing on the field.
"Why can't we use a runway, instead of landing here?" griped the transport's pilot. "This isn't going to be good for my landing gear."

"Relax. It's not that bad." answered one of the long, copper-coloured Songbird 2Bs cruising alongside the transport.
"Easy for you to say. You've got VTOL. I don't."
"Ever tried landing a Nova in a cornfield? Believe me, you've got it easy."

The transport pilot muttered under his breath and directed his full concentration to landing the aircraft.

The small, twin-turboprop transport dropped gently, hit the ground, bounced, and rolled for several hundred feet before slowly coming to a stop.
"See? Easy."
The Songbirds stopped in mid-air above the transport, and slowly lowered themselves down, landing in a triangular formation around the transport.

Eventually, Proletta regained his composure and again spoke. "Wow. We are sorry to hear all that. Do you know where we can find more information on the Xan? This may be of concern to the Emperor.

Also, one of my University associates is giving a presentation in a few days on space medicine. Here is his card if you would like to talk to him and be a presenter in the talk."

He then hands Dr. Kirk his associate's card.

Then, nearby to them, a spaceship landed. A delegation then came out. "Tyrone," said Proletta to one of his assistants, "go meet up with the delegation and tell them to come over here."

The cylinder spoke. "Psh. If you think that's disturbing, perhaps you should stay home. There are far worse aliens than that around. There's a reason we avoid Quaoar, Varuna, and Sedna. Anyway, why develop this medical technology? Well, as my colleague said, our tools shape us. Some was necessary for permanent life in micro-g. The rest... well, wouldn't you like to live as long as possible? We have an added incentive- we need to keep more people alive longer to make up for high infant mortality."

"Engines, engines, engines... hm. To start, behind me you see a fairly standard surface-to-orbit WaveRider, sporting atmospheric and space-based main engines as well as numerous control thrusters. For in-atmosphere flight, a fission reactor provides power for electrokinetic sheets along the wing surfaces as well as air-breathing turbofans, which feed through the same exhaust port as a nuclear ramjet. Once up to high enough speeds for orbital insertion, or when de-orbiting, the turbofans switch off and air is passed directly over the reactor to superheat it exactly like a conventional ramjet would, but with much higher efficiency and without expenditure of chemical fuel. Exclusively for exoatmospheric use is a single nuclear lightbulb engine running on uranium hexaflouride fuel and hydrogen propellent, along with arcjet control thrusters capable of running on pure hydrogen, ammonia, or methane, whichever is most convenient."

IC: Proletta worked up some courage and then spoke. "We were very well aware that space would be home to horrible creatures from the start. The Universe is endless, and so are the horrors that we would encounter."

He then paused, then continued.

"However, just because there are horrors does not mean that we should not explore. If people- on Earth or otherwise- did not feel that space was worth exploring, then people like you would not be standing here on Earth with me today. We cannot let races like the Xan scare us from going into space.

Right crowd?"

"RIGHT!" the crowd responded.

"Oh I am not trying to scare you, not at all," Kirk said. "I was just warning. The Xan are currently lightyears away from here, they really have no intention on coming ehre unless something big happens."
"There are friends among the other races as well. The Vindar is one among many. Their biotechnology and genetic engineering is outtsanding, I mean I could talk for weeks about it."

He paused, thinking.

"They are way beyond any thing in the technology level. They were in space before we even had basic constructions of the government, they were in space when we were neanderthals. They saw us, and took a great interest in us. We learned so quickly, as they did. And also they look just like us. So in time they began to genetically create new races in the galaxy, absed on the humans of Earth. One of the many races include the humans on the planet Techon, where we are from. They drove back Xan from all different star systems, and when they learned of our victory against the Xan, they were overwelmed with joy, and curiousity."

He breathed, and looked at the croud.

"They have their own space a cluster of 20 different systems. They don't allow anyone in it, becuase they have answers to great questions of our time. And if we read those answers, who knows what would happen. The Xan fear them, and for a good reason. They are more technologically advanced as I said."

He looked around again.

"In appearance they appear to be human, but normaly just a little smaller than average human hieght, their average is about five feet eight inches. A lot of them are bald, and many of them have bushy eyebrows. They bear the colors of bronze, and gold. All their ships are eithter the color gold, or bronze."

"In addition to us they have fashioned twenty other races, twelve of which are very succesful in life. They have established governments, and military, and such. The Vindar were especially suprised at how quick we, Techon, advanced. So you won't have to worry about the Xan for a while. The Vindar will protect you from them. However, the Vindar are known to retreat into Vindar space for centuries at a time, doing who knows what. Those are the times the Xan regain their power in the galaxy."

(OOC: DOn't worry, I have been planning out what I will have Kirk say here.)

Dr. Kirk looked around into the crowd, it was massive.
He cleared his voice and spoke into the microphone.

"Hello, as some of you may know I am Dr. Kirk of Techon, a country that originated on a planet far far away from here."

He cleared his throat again.

"I have come here to aid you all, to share my information, so I was asked if I could talk to you for a bit about our medical stuff."

He smiled at his lack of intellectual words.

"So, I will first be talking about our Nanobots. We have developed billions upon billions of them, tiny little robots, invisible to the naked eye, unless there is a swarm of them. We use them to get into the people's bodies, and then they do their work from there. You wonder how they do their work?" He asked lookig around. "Bacteria, several hundred years ago we found a planet so full of medical bacteria, it was amazing. Anyways, the bacteria can be used for almost any disease, if you have cancer we have a special bacteria that reverses the effects, and the disease just disapears after a short period of time."

He took a breath.

"Now for broken bones, bacteria won't do much for that, so we have special Nano-Nerves, little nanobots that will make their way to the brain, and hitchhike on nerves, their they trigger different nerves, and the pain goes away while more nano-bots go in and repair the wound with several tiny utensils. Now for space medicine, we can't use nano-bots, becuase for some reason, they don't work well in a spaceship. SO in space we have an entirely different way of doing it. We have special medi-kits, that have a bunch of little containers in and such. In the containers are what look like green liquid, but it is actually a living organism."

He looked around.

"The organism can actually manipulate, and create new cells, it speeds up cell reproduction, so the wound or whatever will heal faster. In everyday medicine we have special drugs that were fashioned by the best scientists. We have anti-aging drugs, which increase a cells life expectancy, and doubles yours. We have anti-STD drugs, which release a special chemical in the body that quickly take out the diseases. We also have many others, headaches are no problem, due to the fact that we have another special drug that goes throughout the brain, reducing any pain of headaches. The common cold? Gone, we have an immunity to it. Chicken Pocks? Gone, we have a drug that knocks that out of your body for good. SO that is about it, any questions?"
