Inauguration of New President (pics)

Puerto Borica
17-02-2004, 00:11
A cool breeze felt it's way over the entire capital as people were buzzing about the Blanco de Palacio (White Palace), preparing for the inauguration of a new president. The last president was forced from power after the masses rioted in the capital, protesting his blatant ignorance of the need to feed the people. The past president, Miguel Sanchez, was highly unpopular for his lack of empathy for the people. Ruling for a total of 21 years, he was finally removed from power, and elections took place.

The elections had the following results:

Cristian Valesquento -- 67%
Anna Lopez -- 21%
Miguel Sanchez -- 12%

Therefore, Cristian Valesquento has been scheduled to be inaugurated today at the Blanco de Palacio. He has chosen Anna Lopez to be Vice President, and she has agreed to the position.

There must be a brief explanation of Puerto Borica's political system. The President is given full power, and has power to shut down the legislature if need be. The military is also under his control, to prevent a coup d'etat. Very rarely are elections ever held in Puerto Borica, and it should be known that we are a nation that believes in the power of one leader. Of course, keep in mind that not all dictators are bad.. :)

As reporters, who had very little press freedom compared to that of other nations, and others lined to be seated, the National Band was playing merrily. Those of high importance were seated near the stage that President-elect Valesquento would be inaugurated, while reporters were pushed towards the back.

With the sudden silence by the National Band, the entire lawn went quiet. A signal came from someone, and the band director ordered the playing of the national anthem (http://national-anthems.net/cgi/find.shtml?from=real&what=spain), which soon started.

All stood in respect as the President-elect, escorted by his wife, walked down the aisle between the two seating areas. The Vice President-elect closely followed, she being escorted by her husband. The new Cabinet also followed, pictured below.

It took about an hour to inaugurate the President and Vice President, and then the President began to make his speech.

"Good afternoon, my people. Today heralds a new day in our history, a new beginning in our long life as a nation. You chosen me to be your new leader, and I will lead with all of you in mind. It is not my goal to make the people of Puerto Borica suffer, rather I intend to promote health and education, while making our economy thrive.

"For too long has the common man suffered while the rich have thrived. It has been many years since Puerto Borica has seen prosperity, when my grandmother was only a child. We were still under Spanish rule during that time, and then the Spanish Civil War occurred. My grandmother has told me that she misses those days very badly. I am here to tell my grandmother, and thousands like her, that the days they so miss shall return again.

"Education is a pathetic joke in Puerto Borica. Our teachers are not trained, and constant problems with efficiency of a large network of corrupt bureacracy has hurt our children. The literacy rate of Puerto Borica is truly horrendous, with only 65% of the total population fully fluent in English and Spanish. According to statistics, Puerto Borica is one of the least-educated nations in the world. Under my rule, this will change drastically.

"The first thing we must do is cut the massive defense budget, and divert most of it to education and healthcare. Currently, 20% of the Puerto Borican government budget is devoted to the military. I plan to cut that to 10%, and devoting all of that money to Education. That would allow for 40% of our budget to be spent on Education.

"Another crisis which we are facing is our healthcare system. For too long, millions have suffered without adequate healthcare. Former President Sanchez created an entire new area to devote the budget to--the Presidential Guard. This is a complete waste of money in which 10% of our budget is devoted to. I will completely remove the Presidential Guard, and in place devote all 10% to Healthcare. With this new plan, 35% of our budget may be devoted to Healthcare, and all citizens will live happily.

"Another crisis that Puerto Borica is facing is a faulty and unstable economy. Almost 10% of the population is unemployed, which is entirely unacceptable. I will not tolerate such high levels of unemployment, and I have bold plans to cut that number in half in four years. Former President Sanchez's ridiculous policies of isolation and tariffs have hurt our economy, trade, and people. It is time to return to a capitalist economy, to provide opportunity to all Puerto Boricans.

"Our nation faces many problems. They will be hard to overcome, but I am dedicated to changing this country from ruin to prosperity. It is now that I leave you with a new hope that Puerto Borica will return to the power that it once had. My name is Cristian Valesquento, and I have come to help the people, and now I leave to work for them."

He turned, followed by his Cabinet and their family members, and walked into the Blanco de Palacio.
