Stadiums
New City Stadium
http://www.thirdgeek.com/new%20city%20stadium.png
The largest of New Manhattan's stadiums, New City Stadium is also the only major stadium never to have hosted an international event. The field is often muddy, though no one knows why, since there has never been any rain, snow, or temperature change in New Manhattan, excluding the occasional fire and whirlpool.
Metropolis FC Stadium
http://www.thirdgeek.com/metropolis%20fc%20stadium.png
The largest FC in New Manhattan, Metropolis FC has the largest club-owned stadium in the nation. Though it is a very well-maintained venue, the field is uneven in some places due to problems encountered during the remarking of the field for FHWC9.
Verynje Field
http://www.thirdgeek.com/verynje%20field.png
Verynje Field, named after the endangered bird native to Commerce Heights and New Manahttan, was the stadium for the Clocktower City Clicks until it became inadequate for the growing team's needs. It is now used very rarely, and the Field Hockey World Cup will be the first major event there in 10 years.
United Auto Stadium
http://www.thirdgeek.com/united%20auto%20stadium.png
This stadium, until being prepared for FHWC9, had been a field of weeds due to the relative lack of popularity of the marketing ploy by United Auto that caused its construction. Its desertion is understandable, given that the city name is Roadless Paradise, but despite its previously-poor condition, it has been made into a venue worthy for inclusion in a major international tournament.

From the Sikenian Daily:

Can't you win the first match?
Again the Junis-Omeh have lost the first match in a tournament, this time against Belmorian Scandinavia. The Junis-Omeh till now have lost in all but two opening matches of a FHWC. In one of the matches, the opening match took place in Rejistania. It wasn't even the lack of skill which led to the rather embarrasing loss. 'It was the lack of pure, dumb luck' Coach Sa-Tri On said and added: 'If it was lacking skill, well that's a thing I was used to when I lasted coached the team [editors note: in FHWC2], but how can you get Taderekansa to support you?'. Other comment propose that the victory was no result of an interference of the god of victory, but a result of the interference of chemical substances. Belmorian Scandinavia players were proven guilty of doping in the last cup.
No matter which of the explanations was valid, it was a match betwwen two skilled teams. The Junis-Omeh opened scoring in the 5th minute, but just 4 minutes later, <player> equalized in a penalty flick. After ten minutes, all was open again. The rejistanian defense had not their best day today when <player> brought the colony ahead in the 15th minute and when <player> in the 23rd minute archieved the 1-3, I Jasra'he had no hopes to get the ball. Hsi'he archived his second goal in this match two minutes before half-time. In the second half, Hsi'he, Naruk'he and Taki~ll'he could not capitalize their numerous chances. Only a penalty flick in the 50th minute finally rose the rejistanian score, but at that time, the colony was leading 4-3.

The result:
Belmorian Scandinavia 5 (<player> 9th 32th, <player> 23rd 45th 56th, <player> 15th)
Rejistania 3 (Hsi 5th 28th, Naruk 50th)

KOR3AN "LADY BLUES" WIN FIRST INTERNATIONAL FIELD HOCKEY MATCH
Chicks with sticks over Lovisa 4-3
New Manhattan -- The KOR3AN ladies took to the field in smashing fashion today, having made their first appearance in the Field Hockey World Cup this Sunday. The squad, having never played internationally before, was composed of the best college women's players from around KOR3A. The starting 11 were: Lambert (GK), Winstead (Capt), Sykes, Movilla, Marquez, Moore, Stapleton, Archundia, Ybarra, Leyn, and Wille.
http://imsports.ucdavis.edu/images/photos/sportclubs/2002-03/Field-Hockey.jpg
Head coach Dave De Carlo led the team to a strong opening. KOR3AN captain Beth Winstead scored a goal in the first ten minutes when a Lovisan defender slipped on a slick patch of grass. The Lovisans struck back with a goal of their own in the thirteenth minute, but seemed to be playing guardedly, perhaps for fear of dirtying the ladies' skirts. The remainder of the Lady Blues' three goals were scored on penalty flicks, in the seventeenth, thirty-eighth, and a tiebreaking fifty-fifth minute flick by Gretel Leyn. The Lovisans were not able to get more than three of their shots past Lambert's excellent goalkeeping, and got no penalty flicks of their own, thanks to the insightful refereeing of the officials, perhaps swayed by the Lady Blues' allure.

DRUIDS FLUKE WIN OVER NEW BOYS
Alanis Realmob at New City Stadium, New Manhattan for NEWI Cefn Druids 3 Argyllia 1

NEWI Cefn Druids won their first ever field hockey match in their third World Cup in the opening match against Argyllia in fortunate fashion.

Argyllia, on their World Cup debut, were much the better team, outplaying the Druids for long periods. However, the Druids scored against the run of play on 17 minutes, Trevor Watford-Train escaped from the relentless Argyllian attack and rounded their keeper to give the Druids the lead.

The Argyllians were deservedly back level soon afterwards, when a dummy by <player9> fooled Paul Wilkins and <player11> hit a firm shot past Elena Imps to equalise. But it wasn’t until the second half when things went horribly wrong for Argyllia.

Firstly, a pass between two Argyllian defenders hit the referee. From the resulting commotion, the ball broke to Watford-Train, who again took advantage of the situation to score his second of the afternoon. Then soon afterwards, a weak shot from a penalty corner by Trevor Quentin was deflected in front of the Argyllian goalkeeper off an Argyllian stick, and the Druids were in an unassailable 3-1 lead.

The Druid players celebrated at the final whistle, but you could see the relief on their faces that they had, at last, broken out of their losing streak.

Junis-Omeh defeat Gleam Street
The Junis-Omeh have won their first match in the FHWC9 against the relatively new country Gleam Street. The other Streeters ('the Streeters' refers to Cockbill Street) are ranked 15th in the world thanks to the small size of the FHWC-competitions. The match started with a veritable shock as <player>'he brought the other Streeters ahead in the 4th minute. Again TV stations needed to bleep the comments of Sa-Tri On out. In this first minutes, the match reminded far too much of the successless times of FHWC2. But sometimes insults work and they did there. The team improved and only 5 minutes later was able to equalize the score again in a penalty flick. Inira Hsi raised the score in the 25th minute. The half-time result was 2-1 for the Junis-Omeh. The second half saw some good chances for On'he's team but only one could be capitalized.

The result:

2 Straight wins takes TBF to final 8

The Belmore Family can now relax in their final game away to Ulan Baator after 2 3-1 wins over Sliponia and Wella. This will be the 7th time TBF have made it out of the group stage in 36 years of Field Hockey.

Our first win over Sliponia was great. We dominated the match. Stuart Canham was supplied the first goal. John Goshawks darting run down the wing gave Stuie cross needing only to tap the ball past the hopeless keeper. Alan Belmore supplied the second goal. Taking the ball round his marker he just needed to tap the ball across to Shahen Dalia who, with the keeper beaten, placed the ball in the back of the goal leaving us with a good 2-0 lead into half time. TBF came out after the break confident. We had a 2 goal lead. But this confidence over boiled and when Wickersham got to Cocky with the ball on the edge of the D <number 9> took complete advantage of the situation, blasting the ball past Harreros-Symons. But that did not hinder the TBF team as Alan Belmore added a 3rd after recieving a great cross from Vatcher.

FINAL SCORE
THE BELMORE FAMILY 3

SLIPONIA 1

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our second win was much less convincing. Wella took the lead over the Belmorians after 10 minutes and from there on it was an uphill struggle. Our first goal was lucky. Stuart Canhams weak shot into the D was deflected by <player 12> onto Alan Belmore's stick who placed the ball in the net. Then the possesion was all to Wella. Through to the end of the half, TBF were holding on to a very thin line. But we prevailed, we managed to hold on until the break. After the break we were a totaly different team. With this new found strength we managed to push on, Stuie Canham scoring a penlty flick on the 65th minute and John Goshawk nicely converting a short corner.

How Do We Play This Game, Anyway?
NEW CITY, NM - New Manhattan's still-unknown field hockey team entered New City Stadium today in front of a record crowd of 6,856 (both the team's record high and the stadium's record low), most of them Liverpudlians that had made the journey to New Manhattan for Field Hockey World Cup 9. Though the New Manhattan players seemed to have no idea what they were doing, they still managed to score a goal, getting them a surprising point against the #1 team.
(11) New Manhattan 1
(01) Liverpool England 1
The next day, they managed an amazing 3 goals against #35 Argyllia, which was unable to respond.
(11) New Manhattan 3
(35) Argyllia 0
New Manhattan is currently on the top of their group on goal differential, and the game against NEWI Cefn Druids, along with Liverpool England's game against Argyllia, will decide which teams from Group D will advance to the quarterfinals.
In other news, the government has announced that over 1,000 gold deposits have been found in government-owned lakes.

BRING BACK THE FOOTBALL TEAM!
Alanis Realmob in New Manhattan for the Field Hockey World Cup

Two games, two teams, same outcome – the Druids are out again. However, the shame for the real Druid hockey team is that they are actually worse than their footballing counterparts. At hockey.

The Druids played their second match of the championship against reigning champions Liverpool England, and did well for a team playing the wrong sport. They came away from the match with only a 3-1 defeat, a result that gave the Druids a chance of qualifying for the quarter finals if they could manage to scramble a victory against the hosts in their final match. And if the football team could prove themselves to be this good, then how good must the real team be?

Bloody awful.

Yes, after watching a spirited performance from the football team, and after being narrowly defeated in their football match in Dokett, this so-called team put in the most spectacular display ever seen in a sporting encounter. Unfortunately, it was spectacularly awful. Garth Trevor, who’s younger brother Yvan played in the previous match, was sent off in just the second minute for ruthlessly and deliberately swiping at one of the New Manhattan players with his stick. Fortunately, the New Manhattan attacker was OK to carry on, but the Druids never recovered. Going in at half time with the score at New Manhattan 6 NEWI Cefn Druids 0, the home team decided to take it a bit easier in the second half, only adding two more to the total, while letting Leanne Righteous through for what was less a consolation goal, more one that they let the Druids have purely out of sympathy. When the final whistle blew, the home players celebrated their progress into the quarter finals, while the visitors celebrated the end of this painful torture. In front of a crowd of just over two and a half thousand (a record low for the stadium), of which only a small handful at one end had decided to make the long trip from NCD, this was probably the best advertisement for the sport in New Manhattan – hopefully attendances will rise sharply when news of their victory here spreads.

Final scores:

Ishtbekistan defeated clearly - The Scandinavians wait
The Junis-Omeh have defeated the team from Ishtbekistan by a clear 5-0. Inira Hsi, Kie Naruk and Hla Mjekir scored against an Istbekistan team that surely wished to be elsewhere. Goalie I Jasra'he idled for most of the time since the match took place mostly in the Ishbek half. The only dangerous situation for him was a penalty flick from <player>, which missed. The Ishtbeks tried to attack in the first minutes, but after Hsi'he's 1-0 and only a few minutes later the 2-0, they concentrated on limiting the damage. Despite their defensive style of match, Naruk'he raised the score in the 25th minute.

By his victory, the Junis-Omeh have mangaed to qualify for the quarterfinals again. Their opponent is no one else than Belmorian Scandinavia, the opponent of the opening match. The team is eager to win this time and since this is no opening match, they have a good chance to do so. The game will take place in New City.

The result:

MEN STILL BETTER THAN WOMEN AT SPORTS
Uppity KOR3AN Lady Blues Lose 2 In A Row
New Manhattan -- The KOR3AN Lady Blues, a crackshot team of the best women field hockey players from college teams across KOR3A, won their first game in the Field Hockey World Cup against fellow newcomers Lovisa. This drove women in KOR3A into a frenzy of asserting their equality to men, crazily asking for the right to the vote, equal access to education, and something called "the pill" that the staff of this paper were unable to find information about as of press time.

But the status quo proved itself right over time, with the Lady Blues failing to score in a 6 - 0 blowout by Cockbill Street and losing again 2 - 1 to Kaze Progressa. The starting 11 in the first match were: Lambert (GK), Winstead (Capt), Sykes, Movilla, Marquez, Moore, Stapleton, Archundia, Ybarra, Leyn, and Wille. In the Cockbill Street match, things got off to a terrible start, with no fewer than two goals scored in the first eight minutes by 'Street shooters. Coach Dave de Carlo pulled keeper Franny Lambert, substituting in Rebecca Samsonite. But the penalties which had been the Ladies' bread and butter in the Lovisa match were nowhere to be found, with two females and one married man officiating the match. The Streeters brought in two more goals in the first half and took things easy for the second half, playing their bench but still managing another two goals on the Ladies.

With only minor modifications to the roster, the starting 11 for the KP match were: Samsonite (GK), Winstead (Capt), Sykes, Movilla, Marquez, Moore, Stapleton, Haakonsen, Ybarra, Leyn, and Wille. Things looked rosy for the Lady Blues at first, as Judy Sykes scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute on a breakaway run. But the KOR3AN gals could not keep their momentum forward, and a pair of goals in the 29th and 38th minutes from the Progressans meant that the Lady Blues would go no farther in their quest for victory. The KOR3AN government is busy apologizing for what they called "sending girls to do mens' jobs," but the staff of The Daily Enquirer were rather pleased with the Ladies' performance. For a bunch of first-timers, the KOR3AN women didn't do half bad, and we hope this field hockey team will become something of a KOR3AN tradition.

Semifinal, finally!
The Junis-Omeh have defeated the Belmorian Scandinavians with a close 2-0 victory, even more close that the result would imply. In South-Mintanian cities, people were celebrating on the street as if the final was already won, since Belmorian Scandinavia has already defeated the Junis-Omeh once in this tournament. The Rejistanians have played a better match then in the opening match and finally could capitalize their chances. Coach Sat-Tri On commented that the team 'can win cruical matches, even if the opening match always is lost'. The match started as offensive as you would expect it. The Rejistanians wanted revenge for the 3-5. Hsi'he had the first 100% chance in the 6th minute, but the scandinavian goalie Oliver Gadd, who was in top-form, parried it. only minutes after that, the Scandinavians nearly archieved the lead, but defenders Kansu Syku and Daha Mana~o prevented worse. The Orange-Blues took the lead in the 19th minute. It was Exa Sil, who archieved his first goal in an international match. When everybody expected the first half to end 1-0, Kie Naruk extended the lead. The second half was also eventfull and saw several good chances for both sides. Belmorian Scandinavia is surely not like Ishtbekistan who collapsed after trailing 0-2. Despite this, bad luck and the skill of the other side prevented a change in the score. The match ended 2-0 for the Rejistanians who will meet Kaze Progressa in the Semifinals. Kaze Progressa have defeated Liverpool England 2-1 and will surely be a hard task for the Junis-Omeh.

The result:

TBF destroys Cockbill Street and marches onto the semis

In a tense match last night TBF "destroyed" the Cockbill Street Team 4-1. The first goal was out of the blue. 5 great shots from the Cockbill Street attack gave way to five great saves from Harreros-Symons with the team finally getting the ball to Edwards who blasted the ball down the field to Canham who collected the ball and just ran it past the keeper, 1-0. The second goal came from a penlty corner delivered by Goshwak through to Dalia who popped the ball into the back of the net to put TBF into a great 2-0 lead.

As the teams emerged from the tunnel Cockbill Street were ready for buisness. As they marched out the crowd went wild. They were pumped up and wanted to take Cockbill Street into the semis. And it worked, after only 30 seconds Cockbill Street were back in the match with <player 9> scoring a respectable making the score 2-1. Now the game was down to the fans. All the players were exhausted and needed their fans to pick them up. So both the Belmorians and the Cocks began really supporting their team. The Belmroe Family were the most affected. They were ready now, and promptly scored two great goals from Belmore and Wickersham brining the score to 4-1.

From the Sikenian Daily:

The wonder repeated
The Junis-Omeh have reached the final of the field hockey world cup for second time. After a goalfest against Kaze Progressa the 'lasane etsana' (OOC: rejistanian for 'Wonderteam') will face The Belmore Family in the final. It is the third time in this tournament that the Rejistanians face a belmorian nation, after they played Belmorian Scandinavia twice. The match was highly exciting, especially in the first half, which saw 6 goals.
The Progessans had the slightly better start, Eaka Murila challenged Janake I Jasra several times and in the 6th minute was successfull. The Progressans were up 1-0. Only 2 minutes lates, Inira Hsi equalised the score again. Goalie Bartiil Ertaun had no chance to get the ball. Both teams played very offensively at this time, lots of attacks pleased the numerous spectators. In the 12th minute, Selda Taki~ll raised the score for the Junis-Omeh. The Junis-Omeh have changed a 0-1 trailing into a 2-1 lead. In the twentieth minute and after countless attacks, the score was equalised again, this time by Progressan Jaruna Jekinila, Janake I Jasra didn't look good during this attack, despite his good performance in large parts of the match. Only 3 minutes later, Eaka Murila again brought the Progressans ahead, 3-2 for the Progressans. The Rejistanians attacked even more fiercely than they did before and had success: Kie Naruk archieved the 3-3 in the 29th minute. At half time, all was open again.

The second half was the better one for the Junis-Omeh. Hsi'he archieved the lead one minute after the match was started, Kie Naruk extended it in the 33rd minute and Inira Hsi archieved the 6-3 in the 36th minute, voefully ignoring coach Sa-tri On, who wanted the team not to risk anything and shouted at the team. After this, the team obeyed his ordered and played a typical 'System Karela' in field hockey. They didn't have anymore chances, but the Progressans also not.

The result:
Rejistania 6 (Hsi 8th 31st 36th, Taki~ll 12th, Naruk 29th 33rd)
Kaze Progressa 3 (Murila 6th 23rd, Jekinila 20th)

From the Sikenian Daily:

The wonder of New City
The Junis-Omeh have repeated the wonder: In the New City stadium, they defeated the favorites of The Belmore Family 5-2. The whole south-mintanian part of Rejistania was celebrating the victory, even North-Mintanians started 'xamjona'tekne'-parties. Coach Sa-Tri On was not available for comment, he celebrated the victory with the Junis-Omeh. Ex-player Xatri Y commented the match with only one word 'Great!'

The Junis-Omeh started a bit more defensive than normal, because like the Belmorians, they knew, that a conceded goal in this match could become costy. Despite this, both sides had some good chances. The goalies Janake I Jasra and Richard Harreos Symons of the Belmorians had luck to keep the score down to nil all for the first 15 minutes. Then Inira Hsi brought the Rejistanians ahead by a hard ball, which Harreros-Symons'he only missed by centimeters. The Rejistanians were ahead 1-0. This state didn't last for long: two unexpected goals from Alan Belmore suddently changed the situation. Sa-tri On shouted things at his team, which TV-R bleeped out. This had at least some effect: the defense, which made some stupid error to make the secong goal possible, improved and spoiled the Belmorian chances. Seconds before the first half ended, Kie Naruk equalized the score in a penalty flick. At half-time, the score was 2-2 and everything was open again.

The Belmore Family nearly gained the lead again in the second half. Fortunately defender Kansu Syku prevented worse things to happen. In the 35th minute, the lasane etsana equalized the score again. This time, it was done by Selda Takil~ll and the Belmorian goalie had no chance to get the ball. The Rejistanians changed to a more offensive style of match to prevent the Belmorians to equalize again. the had the desired effect: In the 42nd and the 51st minute, Inira Hsi brought the Orange-Blues ahead. the last time, the ball first hit the stick of defender Tom Wickersham before it found the goal. The officials apparently didn't see that and awarded the goal to the rejistanian Hsi'he. The Belmorian chances ended either at the defense or a few at goalie I Jasra'he. After the final whistle, the Orange-Blues needed a bit time to realize that it all really happened, that the Junis-Omeh have done it a second time.

The result:
Rejistania 5 (Hsi 16th 42nd 51st, Kie Naruk 29th, Taki~ll 35th)
The Belmore Family 2 (Belmore 17th 19th)
