Snaegaard is a nation and a continent located in the cold arctic. More than 99% of its inhabitants are dwarven, although the remaining ~1% consist of many races and ethnic groups, who live in harmony (they have to!) in the cold and unforgiving nation.

A quick fly-by around Snaegaard will reveal very few structures and cities. Where are the people? Only the most tolerant and brave of Snaegaard live above ground (the Überverden). Most live underground (the Ünterverden) within the vast cities and tunnels. Many settlements exist under the ocean floor and under the ice shelves. Over 70% of food consumption is from underground hydroponic agriculture, fishing, whaling, and hunting. In the warmer, brighter months, limited surface farming provides the remainder (and a surplus in a good year) of our food. Yes, for a good portion of the winter, the Überverden is blanketed in darkness. Most of the surface inhabitants migrate underground, although some still stick around for the winter season.
How bad are the winters? Pretty bad. Most of the continental Snaegaard is mountainous, which not only decreases the mean temperature directly, but creates unusual (i.e. colder) weather patterns indirectly all over the continent. The mean winter temperature is -42 degrees Celsius (-44 degrees Fahrenheit), and the coldest temperature recorded was several decades ago, and was a bitter -87 degrees Celsius (-125 degrees Fahrenheit). The warmer months often yield temperatures just above freezing level. At least a dozen Überverden dwarves die each year from improper preparation for winter.
