Evening of a Thousand Yesterdays (OOC) (Signup/Discussion)
[OOC: This thread is going to form the main basis of a little RP plan I thought up.
Here is a basic outline of the plot ideas (nothing is decided yet - I want to discuss it a bit with those who wish to be involved, first):
* This will be spy-based action/adventure/romance/science fiction RP.
* This RP will involve aliens who do not have an actual presence; however, they will be involved indirectly. They won't be seen or heard, however.
* This RP, hopefully, will involve a multi-country conspiracy, the details of which are yet to be decided.
* There will be a decidedly gadgety-feel to this. The spies themselves - of which I hope there will be several - will have no national allegiances, although they will, on occasion pose as persons with national allegiances. Therefore, on no occasion will any of them put forward any worldview of any particular nation on NS as there own; they will all have a unified, single agenda, although they will not be aware of each other at first.
* The basis of their agenda will be as follows:
* NS Humanity and Organics and Sentients in general are in a time of great turmoil and strife. All life stands on what appears to be the eternal brink of destruction from one threat or another, although the threat does not appear so strong to some as it does to others. These 'spys' are intent on eliminating primary threats within their grasp rapidly and effectively, and have been trained/provided with tools by an external force that refer to themselves as The Proteus. Our heroes and heroines were raised at a top secret facility in Antarctica, buried deep beneath the Earth - the facility no longer exists, however, having served its purpose. The technology of The Proteus far exceeds that of any of the NS nations - but only a tiny representation of that tech is available to the spies. Simple gadgets, in other words, that are not detectable by the NS nations.
* By eliminating threats to Sentient Life in the NS galaxy (universe?), The Proteus (allegedly) desire to bring about a Golden Age for the Galaxy (universe?).
* These threats include: rapid technological advances that the creators of said are not prepared/ready to use; terrorist threats of massive import; threats to the lives of 'critical individuals' - those who act inside The Proteus' goals without being aware of it; and other such.
If you're interested, let me know here, and include what capacity you wish to be involved. You could involve yourself as a nation, or as a supply of 'evil geniuses', or as a single spy character, all of the above, or something different that you come up with. Please involve yourself - I'm sure we can have great fun with this!]

Sounds quite complicated, and I don't know if you'd want such a fantasy-based nation involved anyway.

Oooh! Oooh! Supply of evil geniuses! I can do that! My characters are always too dysfuncional to be effective good guys anyhow. I can do evil guys, the nation that is being spyed on, an international force trying to hunt the spies down, really just about anything that requires me to fail spectacularly. Just don't ask any of my characters to get anything right.
Sounds quite complicated, and I don't know if you'd want such a fantasy-based nation involved anyway.
[OOC: Well, you don't have to play as your nation. You can act as a single character, or as 'extras', who pop in for cameo roles in the storyline every noe and then, or you could play as evil geniuses... there are plenty of possibilities! :)]

I would very very very much like to join!
Heavily modified frigate+motley crew+LRR's unique characters=fun!!!!!!!
The LRRSV Robert Service cruises through space. It is a heavily modified Franconia class frigate, equipped with many extra systems, like a cloaking device, far more powerful sensors, more powerful shields, and a dropship. It is captained by Lliam Green, the famous AI, and crewed by an assortment of crewmembers. Robots, humans, insectoids, and setient Gas entity J. Robert Longfellow.
I'm interested in joining with both a spy character and my nation.

(OOC)Sounds good to me. I wonder if we can tie this into my own internal plotlines involving a super-psionic hive-mind pseudofungus that's been sleeping underneath Santa Barbara for the past... oh, 40 million years... and is just starting to wake? It has an (admittedly not benevolent) agenda of it's own, but being very very old it undoubtedly would have some sort of relation with the Proteus.
[OOC: Santa Barbara: Hmmm. I'm sure that could work.
Slutbum Wallah: Excellent! :D Failure is good. Plenty of failure should balance the occasionally 'amazing/ludicrous' element that tends to congeal around spy-yarns - and balance is always good.
Nanakaland: Cool. But... interested how? ;p
Rhinara: Definitely glad to have you aboard! Nice to see someone from the original region I inhabited. Woo.
LRR: I'm not sure if we'll have a decidedly spacedy element or not yet - it depends on which people sign up initially. If those people who do sign up run nations with a decidedly un-spacedy element, then we may have to limit the spacedy-ness of the whole thing a bit. Not too much, though.
All: I have some ideas for the plot - I think it might be wise if all of those interested (if possible) could meet up on IRC, in a specialized channel. - If you can't get onto IRC (specifically, irc.esper.net), then hurl a telegram my way and tell me what online communication method you can get access to - if you like, I can field questions etc to the channel from ye, and return answers and such.
A few notes: I think it'd be best if we had a 'central character'; someone who is either a member of the Proteus, or is a direct agent of theres, a 'controller', as it were, who is aware of all the operatives - but does not allow those operatives to be aware of each other (at first!). The more actual nations involved, the better, so do try to convince people you know to get involved. ;) Also, I think it would be wise to add a note of caution here: those nations that do get involved will, undoubtedly, have to be at the end of what may be occasionally unsavoury activities. I absolutely utterly promise that nothing will be done without consent, but nontheless, it's best that you're aware that Very Bad Things are a possibility. You can't have high-spy-drama without big stakes, after all.
Also, it'd be good if you could all post some of your own ideas around what I've already mentioned; I'm perfectly willing to completely direct the plot myself around the events that occur and lay the baseline storyline, but the more involvement everyone has, the better. The more the merrier! - Also, a little note of caution: the RP surrounding this storyline won't all be contained in this thread. If we do as much with this as I'd hope for, then the thread would get insanely huge - and it would just be too hard to keep track of. So only the primary story-arc will be occurring here; other, secondary plots will occur in other threads. On second thoughts... It might be wise if we actually make this an OOC thread for bringing the whole shebang together; or maybe just create an OOC thread for that - kindof like an inventory of thread links and such.
To Those Who Are Looking But Have Not Posted: Don't be timid - if you're even slightly interested, then do post - or at the very least, sling a TG my way and I'll answer any questions you care to ask. - And if you do post, I promise you'll have good fun with this. Honest. ...Would I lie to you? ;)]

So, Ma-tek, what do you have in mind here?
[OOC:
Okay. Here's my basic outline for a small portion of my idea for this (wouldn't want to give it all away, hmm?):
* For not-exactly-yet-known-perhaps-you-should-consider-it-while-we-go-along reasons the alien persons in question, The Proteus have 'taken' several individuals at quite annoying moments in their life (ie, when they were teenagers) and have educated them - and trained them. And done a little ((genengineering?)) ((nanotech enhancement?)) ((attachment of cool laser beam to left toenail?)) (okay, last one is silly) to boot.
* Of course, that wasn't the beginning. Nor is it yet. Our young persons are not merely trained; they're then trained summore! Yes. They spend about ten more years absent from their homes, and, naturally, are considered quite, quite dead. By most, anyway. Some probably don't think so - who knows. That's for ye all to figure for those of you who'll have spy characters etc. * Some evil type characters could easily have been among those taken; say, two. Discussion on IRC would be preferable for these characters - and all spy characters, too.
* Once their training is finally complete, they're each assigned to a country on Earth (and maybe Mars or Titan or whatnot too, if any of those nations are willing?), wherein they shall make their base of operations, with nifty looks-normal-but-isn't ((office?)) ((bookstore?)) ((>enter workplace here<)) and supercomputer (of course - what discriminating spy-for-aliens wouldn't have a nifty supercomputer?). Now they're deployed, they're tasked with reporting to a single man: >who will be one of my characters, I'm afraid, as he'll have allllll the information (not named yet because I do not know from which nation he will be as yet - preferably a fairly high-tech nation<.
* Evil characters start early. They are, I'm afraid, going to largely be of the 'scientist' variety. They're not really going to be overly evil at first; let's start gentle, eh? They'll merely be called evil characters. What we're doing here is based on moral evilness. So they can want to do VBTs (Very Bad Things), but they can't do VBTs - at least not straightaway. They'll need time. They'll need... a background!
* Which brings me to the next point. Every character is going to need a background. Constant, continuous characters will need a full background. It doesn't need to be done immediately; do it inside your posts for the main story arc, if you wish to - or run it concurrent, in a different, linked-to thread - but make sure you do them. If the people reading can see your characters background, they'll be more interested in reading it - and isn't half the fun of roleplaying in text the fact that you want your writing to be read? So - the more total effort, the more enjoyment. If you don't want to put in too much effort due to time constraints, that's okay too, but try not to take on more than you can do - if everything gets slowed down too much, it won't be as much fun as it can be. I'm well aware that some of these are fairly basic points, but best to make a note of them somewheres.
* A lot of what we're doing is going to be SF. Although it's basically a spy drama, the whole premise - what with aliens - is going to require science fiction-style elements. - It would help if y'all could go to the channel on IRC, here. :)
- I'm not sure if there's much else to say... I'll edit this if anyone has any specific questions about what I have in mind. Anything (except the basic concept - I've got a load of ideas on this one) could change, if there's enough wanting to change it. :)]

I got it. I think the man now known simply as Hofstadt (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102787) will be an 'evil guy.' Background in the link, sorta. An aging hippy of a nanomechanical scientist, last we knew of him.
He's already scheduled for involvement in the "A Ruined Shell" thread, which again is mostly internal. But hence his not doing VBTs quite yet. As time goes on he may or may not become a much more important character. (I say may not, cuz hey he could die, he's not immortal.)

Nice idea, I could definitely be interested in joining - it's just that I don't have very much experience of roleplaying in NS (you can probably tell that by looking at my post count too ;)) and am a bit afraid of ruining the whole thing :P But at least I've shown my interest now. I'll come to take a look at that IRC channel later (don't be surprised if you see somebody named Aasitus|Kekko there) and I'll keep an eye on this thread. I will decide later which kind of character or nation I'd like to play in this, if this is something I'm capable of roleplaying in :P
[OOC: Okay.
So.
Here's a sample of the spy kinda-thang going on whatsit. In English: here's a little sample of what I'll basically probably be using - characters-wise - for the primary controller and his trusty sidekick. I am not certain if I will use this ICly or not, but regardless, I think it's relatively good, so. Enjoy. :)

*S*A*M*P*L*E*
IT HAD BEEN A LONG night indeed for G-441 - otherwise known as Sulkat Esperallya ux-Rihad; the looming giant, of no true name these days, had been hidden deep inside the Manta Facility for some hours. The guards that had discovered his passage lay unconscious - or had, when he had left them - and he had taken refuge in the cliche small side room.
Darkness was his only difficulty. His eyes smarted in memory of Timothy, whom had almost cost him his sight in that ridiculous tournament he had agreed to represent the Empire at; still, they functioned now - thank the Stars. He could see, after a fashion. He sighed. She would be here, soon, he felt; her mind tasted a certain way.
Sulkat was not of any fixed address or nationality, these days. Or ever, actually. He kept up the pretense of having been concieved and born here, in this place - but he had been born some distance away. A number of parsecs away, indeed - aboard an Earth-g stellar-orbital spherical space station. The Proteus had provided all he had needed - everything from-
The tap on his shoulder brought him from his thoughts, jerking him into reality with the crystal clarity that only the cold firm grip of reality can provoke. "It's time," a feminine voice whispered into his ear.
Softly, staying utterly still upon the damp warm street in the Diplomatic Corps Compound in Nenya, he questions the voice, "And the dossier? Did you indeed get the dossier, nys?"
She hissed softly, "Vilycy yliny, vëynuri! No time! Let us make haste, for the guard are not far behind - all done!"
"Damned nys," Sulkat murmoured; this nys - 'woman' - had been, to his eyes, his perfect professional partner. - And she was, for sure... but if only she could not be quite so very irritating, mm? Yet no such luck for poor Sulkat. Still, perhaps fortune was with him yet-
"Sulky, we really ought to move," she urged softly, "quickly, my friend."
Sulkat considered. "Hyruynólë," he agreed, already fumbling in his pocket with the small flat disc sewn into the jacket. The soft report of footsteps echoed to his ears from the distance - not good indeed; they were moving quickly but softly. Yet the familiar warmth, the tingling gentle caress of the constriction field (okay, so it itched a bit) was joy itself (okay, so it was actually very irritating to the skin, and made you scratch for about forty minutes thereafter - but even so-), when it was considered that the alternative to being caught up in the transferance beam could very well have been personality alteration sentences.
Which would not have been good. At all.
Indeed, it wouldn't have been painful, or even unpleasant. It just would have been very inconveniant.
* * *
Nikolita scratched her neck with the irritation that comes naturally to one used to time spent with an irritating man, yet she allowed herself to grin inside. He can really be quite amusing... in a dead kinda way, she pondered, even as he scowled his way to the fridge and pulled out ice-cold mineral water.
Slipping gracefully into her accustomed seat in the little living room above the bookstore in the little village of Telbeth, in the far, far north of Ma-tek, she allowed herself a little contented sigh. - So, she was twenty-nine tomorrow. And she had just been shot at with US weapons, thrown flash grenades at a bunch of strange guys with glowing arms and gleaming weapons on their legs - but who the hell cared? She had a great ass. And so long as that didn't betray her, she knew she was ahead.
After all - if you have a great ass, you simply cannot be behind.
Still, her impending ancientness was of major annoyance. Never mind the fact that she'd just knives - well, short swords - hurled at her, guns shot at her (the non-lethal sort - well, mostly) and worst of all, she had to put up with an annoying seven foot four behemoth of walking aggravation.
Hmm. A part of her was not entirely certain that her apparent minor depressive mood was unwarranted; after all, she was living a nightmare. A nightmare that involved a bunch of aliens named after something Greek or whatnot; a weird, spooky not-of-this Earth genetically-honed (through 'cross-breeding', no less - the mind boggled) paranoid freak of a Nenyan... Oh, yeah, and a plot by the government to attempt to produce Vilycy Ohtatyury - 'Great Warriors' - using genetic engineering.
Well, this was a great year. Still, wasn't she ignoring the big picture? Weren't nukes being tossed around like firecrackers in some places? Hadn't the world been severely screwed for years? Check, and check... but who the hell could stop that.
Apparently, the Proteus thought they could, though. Insane as they were, they could probably use people in some way to attempt to do something to cut down on the even greater insanity of Earth ... and the surrounding worlds.
Nikolita hoped so.
The news was depressing; the world was depressing. Oh, sure, there were good things here or there - but often even the best stuff was ruined. Arguments at promising summits; stalling; cuts in trade; war; war; war; a lot more war. INN S-1 (INN Solar 1) had gotten so full of war stories, they'd had to move most of it to INN S-3 (INN Solar 3). The world - hell, the solar system, at the least - seemed to be on the verge of being royally screwed 90% of the time.
So the news was only to be watched with marginal frequency; whenever necessary. So, once a day then. Relaxed, comfortable, Nikolita supposed now was as good as any time - and softly she ordered the T-unit to bring up INN S-1...
Please gimme feedback. Gimme gimme gimme. :) - Also, incidentally, I'm in the channel at the moment and shall be most of the day and half the evening (GMT). :)]

Yegads! How did I miss this for so long?
Am havink some interesting super-secret spies of mine own... perhaps one of them stumbles upon one of the Proteus people and begins investigating them? Also have very good potentially-evil, but possibly-good character (One Dr. Finn, functionally immortal after being reanimated as an Artificial Lifeform, and slightly insane due to memories of his own death). Perhaps there could be a Proteus operative in my Mars colony... that could present some interesting scenarios, given that it just entered a civil war. And the aliens... could easily tie in with another storyline I'm working on.
*Warning, Spoiler Below*
The "Labyrinth" thread is intended to end with the explorers being taken aboard an alien arkship that had been studying Labyrinth concurrently, and 'improving' the lifeforms there. Maybe these aliens have some relation to Proteus?

[OOC: Oooh, oooh, would be very glad to have ye on board, Eniqcir! Especially as that would bring Mars into the equation. Definitely.
As to the last... that could probably work, aye. Although it might be wise to make it a 'link' - as opposed to an actual relation - between the Proteus and those aliens you spoke about. Perhaps they have information on the Proteus, or are aware of their activities - perhaps they could hint at this, opening up the possibility of government investigation into the possibility of alien interference etc. It could certainly make things a whole lot more interesting if our spy friends don't just have the 'evil people' to deal with, but also a bunch of governments who are hot on their tails trying to discover what the heck they're up to.
I think what I'm going to do about now (I'm writing at the moment) is kick things off with another thread which I shall shortly add a link to. I was originally going to keep it all here - but the cross-over of IC/OOC matters would probably provoke confusion. So, henceforth, this is the OOC 'Evening of a Thousand Yesterdays' thread. Woo.
I'll post the 'introductory' thread shortly; I'll leave plenty of room for others to join in, along with a special introduction-explanation OOC post here in order to co-ordinate said joining-in. :)
Oh, and as a last note, I may well do an Exemplia-Evening of a Thousand Yesterdays crossover, depending on whether Exemplia gets enough interest from people here on NS; basically, what that would mean is that Exemplia (see above) would be an 'alternate reality' in relation to NS - perhaps even the original home of the Proteus. Or perhaps not... ;)
I already plugged Exemplia, indeed, but I did not explain what it is. Think NS Forum roleplay with a firm, complete ruleset and proper moderation and enforcement of a roleplay policy. Think NS with a more realistic economic system. Think NS with a more cozy, smaller world, with more potential for interaction between a small number of powers. Think efforts for world domination with the difficulty of having a pre-existing hegemony to overcome.
Think fun.
Think... Exemplia.
Perhaps I should have gone into advertising... ;)]

[OOC: I need a bit more to work with that that...
It's like this. This is a story-driven piece of RP. So I need to know details about characters. Its okay if you don't submit details right away and I know of you - LRR hasn't, for example, but I've RP'd with them in the past - but those who I haven't RPd with are 'unknown' to me. I don't know what style you use or anything, so I can't just 'slot' you into the storyline.
Gimme gimme gimme info! ;)
If you like, add a small description of your character and why you think he ought to be involved. Is he an agent working for Sulkat? Or is he working for his government? What is his government's agenda regarding the conspiracy? Do they know anything about it? What do you want them to know?
And stuff like that. Don't worry about making errors regarding the content of this story: it's not set in stone yet, and if anything doesn't quite work with where I'm going with the story-arc, I'll let you know and we can work it out. But...

Perhaps the only exception to this is the nanotech applications I have; those are largely just for show, to display the fact that the Commonality wants to show its technological prowess off. I note we do have stellar ships, although they lack shields and some of the other comforts expected (we have artificial gravity of a sort (referred to as psuedo-gravity technology), but we got that from studying the more advanced methods of AG technology (by observing other ships, primarily). Monkey see, monkey do.
We have also sent a ship out of the solar system, but that was using a natural system of 'portals' or something like that... I don't remember the specifics; it was FSP's thread.
But if you're out-of-system, that causes no problem. Sulky, the only character of mine involved in this that actually has any links whatsoever to ICEL (my nation won't really be involved much, except for background crap on Sulkat), could easily catch a ride on a foreign civilian transport.
I RP with people who have 'higher tech' than me (and lower, if they're willing, because it's rubbish to assume everyone would just have the same technology across the board), anyhow, because a guy with a stick can kill you just as dead as a guy with a plasma rifle.]

Well that should be fine then. In another thread I have a character from DN going to boarding school in a lower tech nation.

What I REALLY need is another Proteus-controlled agent to bloody well answer Sulkat!
I am interested and I think I could handle such a role. I have done pretty well within realms of story writting to hopefully push into this. However, I think I would need to do some browsing on spying as my most recent usage was beating splinter cell: pandora tomorrow (great game but irrelevent).
If not I can play a mean villian.

Ok, I have my two characters (somewhat) planned out.
James Caeth - DN's best superspy
Dr. Hadwyth - DN's most notorious evil genius
[OOC: Woah! Where did all these posts come from?
*grrs* I swear, this forum is good and all, but this thread didn't bump up on the search page at all. Otherwise I'd have posted and answered y'all already.
Sorry! And - Nobody is too late. It's never too late. :)
Okay. Here's what to do:
If you want a character involved, then post a background here. Include any information you want - the more information, the better, because I'll be using your backgrounds to find roleplay 'hooks' so that we can link everyone and everything in the story together... and find new avenues to go down. So if your character has a rich, complicated history, that's great. If you don't want to reveal certain things about your character in public, that's okay - but please telegram me the missing bits. I need to know them OOCly, otherwise I can't guide the story.
You can apply for a character in any position or role you want as far as agents for the Proteus or Controllers of agents for the Proteus goes; that doesn't mean to say you'll be able to go straight in after posting the background, though. I'll have to check and let you know any bits and pieces that you need to slot in there to fit it in with Sulkat's 'brief' (secret stuff that I want to reveal later kept back for now!) background, which can be found below...
Sulkat Esperallya ux-Rihad
Born to Nenyan parents in the city of Shelbattanu in the region of Ma-tek known as Shelbattanu-Rhea, Sulkat was, like most of his species at the time, under the brutal oppressive rule of the -dominated Ma-tek Commonwealth - denied access to his heritage, denied access to the most important city in Nenyan culture, he bucked against the system in any way he could. His parents were killed when he was seven years old, publically beaten to death for an imagined transgression by the overbearing Commonwealth Guard during the year of the Great Riots in 24 b.d. (1980 c.e.). With nobody to care for him, Sulkat was forced to roam the streets of Shelbattanu, living off of scraps of food left outside restaurants for the stray dogs.
By his tenth birthday, Sulkat had managed to leave Shelbattanu, and travelled north, intending to find a life - or try to, as best as his oppressed kind could - in the capital, Tek.
However, on his way there, he was set upon by a group of criminals, beaten, his clothes stolen, and left to die by the side of the road. Desperate, he strived to send out a Call - a mentalic scream, if you like.
His Call was so powerful that Semir-randil, passing through the area, was implored to find him immediately, not understanding even why he was doing so. Realizing upon discovering the inert form of Sulkat that he had stumbled across a powerful and useful Talent, as well as taking pity on the injured boy, Semir-randil returned to Nenya with the child, and there took pains to offer him an education and life that he could never have enjoyed otherwise.
Sulkat quickly joined the ranks of RISE - a revolutionary group devoted to rebuilding the old Empire of the Eternal Flame anew as the Empire of the Eternal Dawn, which was to be a free and open society, improving on the failings of its predecessors by not denying anyone the rights which all deserved. This lofty goal would have been impossible, were it not for the hard work and dedication of the members of the group. Publically, RISE remains unknown to this day; nobody outside of the organisation is aware that the rise of the Empire of the Eternal Dawn - now the Iluvauromeni Commonality of Everlasting Light - was caused by the revolutionary group. Indeed, few even know of its continued existance as the secret intelligence/black ops arm of the Commonality Executive Council - or of its infiltration of top Commonality government departments, ensuring that RISE continues to exert a degree of control over the Commonality even to this day.
His education focused much on bladed weapons, and he was the sparring partner of he who later become Emperor, Si Ling - although he never won a single bout with that man. Semir-randil was the tutor of both, and is widely-considered to be amongst the very greatest of all of those who have wielded a blade in Iluvauromeni history - as well as a good educator in other matters. As such, Sulkat received tuition in a wide range of subjects, from simple chores to geopolitics, from diplomacy to the art of warfare.
On his sixteenth birthday (17 b.d.), he was sent on his first mission for RISE; but things did not go to plan. Sulkat vanished without completing his mission, and was believed captured at first, and then dead, but returned unharmed to Barad Aelin - the RISE headquarters - seventeen days later. Trusting him to his word, Semir-randil did not push the issue when Sulkat refused to explain, merely reprimanding him for failing to complete his assigned mission. But Sulkat did not remember those seventeen days - at first.
Later, he came to recall them, slowly. He had been abducted; taken aboard some kind of vessel, and taken to a far away place. He remembered it all dimly, as a dream, along with the words, "To here you shall return."
The event dimmed in his memory until his twenty-first birthday, upon which date he vanished again - again believed killed in action. Yet he was not; he was removed to a different planet, trained in certain ways, and then sent back to Earth after several years - to work for the mysterious beings who called themselves The Proteus. Sulkat had never seen them, but he knew of them, and he knew that that they had certain goals - but that he was not to ask, or wonder what those goals were until he was told of each specific one.
The nature of the place where he had lived, briefly, on that other planet, had convinced him that their aims were for the good of all; a beautific place with no crime and thousands of species living in harmony, he often aches to return there - and lives in the knowledge that he has the promise of the Proteus that one day, he will be allowed to return.
[OOC: *peers about* Hm. Where'd everybody go?]
