Over 1,000 Displaced in Avalanche

Zhaxizong province, Xikuang: Unprecedentedly heavy snowfall earlier in the year and an early warm spell led experts in Zhaxizong to call for the evacuation of the lakeside village of Tashiziankli, population 1427. The evacuation was completed none too soon: millions of tonnes of snow and rock descended upon the precarious village only days after the last few citizens had made their way to safety.

The existence of the village has always been precarious. Tashiziankli, well positioned in terms of fishing and farming beside Tzhezhir lake, has several times been affected by avalanche from the high peaks that surround it on three sides. Up to now, the village has been able to absorb the damage and rebuild, but the latest and last event leaves it beyond any hope of recovery. Tashiziankli has been completely buried.

Former residents are overall remarkably unaffected by their displacement, most just happy that they were able completely to evacuate the village in time. "Oh, we'll manage." said former resident Songyam Saiyi of plans for the future, speaking from a workers' collective housing unit in nearby Khyiqi. "Bound to happen one of these days, that was. We'll end up somewhere or other."

The Tashiziankli Yak Path has been declared unsafe, and is closed until further notice.
