as in real life, military is only important if you meet one or both of these conditions:

1) you are being threatened by imperialistic nutters who want to dominate your people.

2) you are an imperalistic nutter who wants to dominate other people.

if you go looking for war its easy to find, though if you don't it's easy to avoid it altogether. so no, it's not important, in in my opinion takes away from RP since people tend to resort to shooting before they would in real life since its only their pretend people, who don't think for themselves anyway, who will be dying out there.

Let's face it- Humans are generally very competitive and violent creatures. It's our nature. So anwser this quetsion truthfully- what's more fun- arguing about trade tariffs and Passing Laws(what Politicians usually do in real life) or fighting a bloodless yet bloody war?

That may be true, but it is of no use in Nation States as there is no military feature, it's only of use if you hang around forums, and you make it up then so who gives a damn.

It's important if you don't want to be invaded.

You must hate Starcraft =/

Do we want to make NS real? It's a game. And in ways it is realistic... A lot of wars happen in real life without talking first. *Cough* a notable example comes to mind which I need not mention.

I think the point of the game is that it's only pretend people...

A military is only important / nescesary if you want it to be. If you want to have an offencive military, go ahead and have one-but be aware that others may not wish to have a military as yours.
My recomendation is to have a small army, one that can cover the defence of your nation well. This is important to have on account of noobs. Even if he is two days old, if you have no army at all his three men with pointy sticks could in theory invade. So, a small army of about 0.5, 1% of your population on active service. This will form your core defence. Also state that you have an army of reserves, say, the same as your army again, or more ready to deploy within 12 hours. This way you have a strong enough of an army to avoid becoming a proverbial pushover, but without having to constantly pay out Billions in logisitics to your Úber army.

Just an idea,

REALISM HAS NO PLACE IN A COMPUTER GAME!!

For instance, WWII Online! What's the point in that?! You spend 20 minutes trying to find a battle, then when you find one you either:

a) Take a bullet and dies instantly
or
b) Take a bullet, kill the guy that shot you, then die 10 minutes later of blood poisoning.

I'm sure this is very realistic, but it's also BOOOOOORING! So bring back the ultra-gory shooters with little or no-storylines and the ability to take an entire SMG clip without popping your clogs.

What's that you say? Return to Castle Wolfenstein?

Dreguk, or having a guy take an entire clip from a Sturmgevehr...

My sugjestion is that you at least need a defencive millitary.
