Help a newb out with roleplaying/wars

1. OK, how large should my army be? I'm a Democracy, and I've heard things ranging from 5% to >1%. So? How large?

2. I heard all about "realisticness" "supplying" etc. How much of my stuff shouldd be fighting, supply, etc. etc. It seems overwhelming and a lot to remember. It seems that if I make one mistake I'll be deemed a godmoder, flamed into oblivion, and told to leave forever just like that. So I want to be extra careful. 50% of my ground forces should be noncombat, and 75% with air and naval forces, would I be correct?

3. In comparison to my soldiers, how many vehicles should I have? Should I decide whether I focus heavily on building aircraft, and have an unusually high amount, and in return have an abnormally low number of naval vessels? Or should I stick to standard percentages?

4. Where do I draw the lines? How high of a percent of my things should I ship out? What's the most often I should fight wars? When should and when shouldn't I help my allies?

Please help a newbie. I don't want to be deemed a permanant godmoder.

Well, Mr. Nooby, we all have to start somewhere. You really have to wait a week or two to buy weapons for your army, so stay out of other peoples wars. You have to wait a month, or have about 300 posts, to produce your own weapons. And for the percentage, 5% should do for most wars, (Even though I like to enlist half of my population to get the war over as quick as possible, that's just me). Hope this helps! :)

I use 3% of my Population, & 25% of my army is Logistical. Vehciles dpends on how much Money your willing to dish out and sacrifce in other areas. Its best to aviod wars as mcu as possible if you can. Help allies out in All situations cause you never know when you might need there help.

Role Play University is a great resource for answering these and similar questions. You can find all the details HERE (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=110024)
Remember, you don't have to join the region to take classes.

Well, my first nation (some of you 'oldbies' might remember Ferretus), I produced weapons once I hit about 200 million, but I don't think I ever fought in a war. I do recall selling several helicopters, but other than that I produced my own weapons and didn't really post until I had about 210 million.

your best bet is to read the stickies- especially the one titled, New to NationStates? View these great threads.. A lot of your questions have already been answered.

Since you're new, you'd be far better advised to wait a while before trying to get involvedin any wars. Many larger nations have more infantrymen than you have in your entire population.

Perhaps the best course is to make posts from time to time detailing the gradual accumulation of military equipment (either buying it from a storefront or building it yourself).

You needn't worry too much about Logistics at first- the more so since you should concentrate everything on reactive defense early on. Without getting too deep into number wanking, just assume that a minimum of 75% of any military force will not be primary combatants- they'll be supply clerks, maintenance techs, office clerks, etc. Once you get to a respectable size (around 100 million population), you'll need to give a lot more thought to power projection. This means that logistics will play a larger role.

Start slow, post frequently, and keep a low profile until you're strong enough (as a anation or through alliances) to protect yourself. If you have questions, make a note of the nations whose posts were most useful to you in the stickies and telegram them.
