Edolian Policy Changes (Announcement)

Edolia

Edolian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) Memo to All Foreign Correspondents

For the last number of years, after a number of brutal wars, Edölia has found itself undergoing a period of isolationism. While our normal economic trade policies have remained in place, diplomatic and military action has been nearly nonexistent. The last years have been a period of learning and contemplation for the people of Edölia. The Imperätor of Edölia, Erik von Blätterschplitt, announced yesterday that in the coming year, Edölia would be retuning to the world stage and resume its relations with allies -and enemies. However, the Imperätor also announced that many changes -some significant and others minor would be made.

The most significant of these new changes will take place internally. The Imperial Palace has announced that final plans for Parliamentary elections have been completed and Edölia’s first ever elections will be held in a year and a half. Until that election, Edolia’s main political parties –the Communist, Imperial and Socialist Parties being the three largest followed by the Christian Capitalist and Liberal Parties- will find themselves in a race to garner the needed support from the people. The new, democratically elected government will share power with the highly popular Imperätor who will retain control of many of the government’s executive and legislative powers. The second most powerful person in Edölia will be the Chancellor, who will be chosen by the parliament every two years.

The Edolian government has also announced plans to boost its foreign land-purchase program and will be expending an additional $29 billion (Standard US Dollars) each year, in the acquisition of land overseas with which to boost Edolia’s small agricultural production. Edölia’s cannabis producers have been, in recent times, swamped with orders from foreign merchants and it is hoped that the purchase of new agricultural land will allow us to boost production of the highly sought-after crop.

The office of the Imperätor shrugged off the recent findings of the Edolian Council for Capitalist Reforms (ECCR), a Capitalist think-tank, that Edölia’s gross domestic product per capita could grow from its current $40,100 to between $45,000 and $47,000 if Edölia switched to a free-market economic system. “What’s the point of having a strong economy if you don’t provide for your people?” the Imperätor was quoted as saying.

Also coming in the next year, the government has announced that it will pursue a more persuasive foreign policy, designed to peacefully bring freedom and socialism to the oppressed peoples of the world. Pro-freedom and moderate capitalist nations need not fear the might of Edölia, but the Imperätor has made it quite clear that nations that attempt to stand in the way of the wishes of the people will be dealt with in a most violent and destructive manner.

The final public change to be made within the next year is the adoption of two new languages as official languages of Edölia. Edöliani, the language spoken by approximately 75% of Edolians, will be joined by Novi Edöliani, an artificially created language introduced by the Ministry of Linguistics, and Mandarin Chinese, a language spoken more and more frequently in Edölia, due to the massive influx of Chinese immigrants.

We hope that this memo has been helpful in understanding the new changes that will be enacted in Edölia. If there are any questions regarding Edolian policy, both new and old or Edolian government, society or culture, this office would be quite pleased to take them.

[OOC: I think you mean GDP per capita as growing above $40,100. A GDP of $40,100 would be terrible. The PCC is willing to support, covertly, the Christian Capitalists and the ECCR. What are the chances of any of our employees speaking Edolian?]

"The Edolian policy on elves has not changed in the least. Over the last couple of years, Elven immigrants have poured in by the millions and at last count, some 3% of the population of Edolia was Elven."

<<OOC: Yes. You're exactly right. I forgot to put in the "per capita" part (makes a big difference, no?). Thanks for reminding me.

As to the other, Edolia bans monetary contributions to political parties from outside of the country but I'm sure you could figure out ways to secretly support them. I would guess that you probably have some people who know Edoliani which is very similar to Latin. Anyway, languages don't come up much in NS since there are just so many of them in the world. I always just kind of ignore them when I RP.>>

Diplomatic communication to the government of Edolia:

My colleague the representative for foreign affairs is away at a conference in Lavenrunz, but i write in her name and my own. The devotion of your government to the welfare of its people is admirable, and it would be a great honour to establish trade and diplomatic ties with your nation.

We would like to invite Edolia to join the International Fair Trade Agreement, which has recently become the world's largest trading bloc. Signatories agree to minimum standards on the rights of working people and agree to trade withn one another in preference to other countries, thus humanizing trade in an ever-larger space. Membership in the IFTA has already given a substantial boost to the economies of many member states, including ours.

In peace,

"We would like to express our gratitude to the people of Tanah Burung for inviting us to this fair trade pact, but, at this time Edolia is unwilling to enter into such far-reaching economic treaties. We already have a preferncial trade policy towards allies and other Socialist nations and maintain an extremely high standard in our treatment of our workers. Again, we thank you for your offer but at this time must decline."

Edolia is always happy to make trade deals with fellow progressive Socialist nations. In fact, we would like to offer a possible mutual defense treaty between our two nations. I believe it would benefit us mutually.

Menelmacar would like to engage in a trade arrangement with Edölia. While not socialistic ourselves, we are always pleased to deal with nations with friendly attitudes towards our people.

We could, perhaps, exchange preferential trade status, and if you can provide us with a list of commodities which you are short of, I can put you in touch with some Menelmacari firms who will be able to fill your orders.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

We are happy to see that so many nations are pleased with our return to the world stage and hope that we can continue our previous good relations with the free nations of the world. Our new friendship with Hattia is also pleasing and we hope to build a relationship with the extremely well-respected people of Menelmacar.

Memo to the Menelmacar trade bureau:
"Edolia, in recent years has become more self-sufficient, though we have found it more expendient economically to import our food and use our arable land to grow cannabis -a much more profitable crop. Edolia's main production is in the form of books -fed by our massive forests, and software. Our heavy machinery sector is steadily growing but we still import quite a bit of that. Many consumer goods, including furniture and other luxories are imported from other nations. We also import quite a bit of copper. Edolia imports quite a lot of goods from other nations but generally not in a broad category of products. As to the offered mutual preferencial trade status, we would be quite pleased to sign that agreement. Hopefully this can be a bridge of friendship between our two peoples."
