Rather Convenient Announces Plans for Space Colony

07-02-2004, 06:32
After nearly 30 years of investment in a space program, The Archbishop of the Holy Principality of Rather Convenient has decreed that the next step will be to build a permanant space colony that will lie beyond the moon. In the past, we have constructed various space stations in low orbit, but none of them have been intended for long-term large scale residential use.

The station is currently in the designing stage, where thousands of RC Aerospace engineers are working on the project. The station will not only serve as a colony, but also a maintenance/refueling station for future space craft. Furthermore, scientific experiments will be conducted in the micro-gravity sections of the station. The target total amount of people the colony will support has been set at 90,000 people. Our aim is to complete the station within 12 years.

Our nation welcomes all donations, investments, and comments regarding this project. If any nations are willing to assist in anyway, please contact our Ministry of Relations.

How much is your project going to cost you.

OOC: Congrats! And I just posted this so I could sign in again 'cuz NS kicked me off! :p

Our initial estimates number to about 5 trillion USD total, accounting for all aspects - R&D, construction, maintenance, launch, etc.

Since I'm so generous and since you are a undeveloped nation I will donate 200 billion dollars to your undertaking.

We graciously thank Koilos for their generous donation - your deed will not be forgotten.

OOC: Actually, if you didn't check my country profile... This is a resurrected nation.

We will send you $500 billion USD, as well as offer some research, and man-power. But, in return, we require that we own 10% of your space program, and we gain anything in the way of R&D you gain from this.

Sorry, but I think we'll refuse that. Our Space program has been on-going for a long time, and I think 10% of it would probably be more than your donation.

We'd be willing to provide any technology we gain from R&D, but no 10%.

In a related note, a general construction plan has been made... It will consist of a traditional rotating ring, supported by two perpendicular spokes spanning across the diameter of the station. It has been decided the station will be modular - components will be built on the ground, then ferried into space, where they will be assembled. Although not finalized yet, we expect to make liberal use of carbon nanotubes, titanium, carbon steel, and ceramic alloys.

A likely power source will be a fission or fusion reactor - it has not been decided yet, due to the experimental nature of the fusion reactor.

Wow. We'll help you by letting you use my moon colony as a rest stop on the long journey.

The construction of many of the modules of the colony has begun planetside, selection for the colonists has begun, and we are currently stepping recruitment into our space agency in order to accomodate the needed manpower.

Because of the massive amounts of materials needed for the constuction of the station, it has been decided that parts of the structure will be constructed in space. Our moon mining colony will provide much of the raw materials needed - however, we fear that those raw materials alone will not fulfill our requirements. Therefore, we are putting out a notice to space-faring nations: We require raw materials in space for construction. If you are able to provide these, please contact us. We will make it worthwhile...

After securing a reliable source of raw materials, initial construction of the superstructure of the colony has begun in space, while hundreds of modules are being prepared on Earth. Dozens of new shuttles are in the process of being commissioned to ferry the required parts back and forth, and selection of the colonists has been completed - now they are training for their tasks. The colony is expected to become fully operational in 7 years.

Construction is continuing at a steady pace, and we estimate it to be about 43% complete. 6 modules of the station have already been tranferred into space and integrated with the colony. A small population of trained scientists and technicians have already arrived to assist with the construction as well as supervise the project.
20-02-2004, 02:36
The colony is nearly complete, with its structure finished - all that is left is to connect the modules and activate them. We have begun initial testing and evaluation, which will involved 5,000 civilians for a period of 4 months. Changes will be made, if necessary, and we will then begin shipping our colonists afterwards.

We are currently offering business contracts for our colony. We will be giving out permits to operate businesses on our colony, and interested parties should contact our Ministry of Business.

We are pleased to announce that the construction and test of the colony has been completed, and as we speak, the colonists are being loaded onto shuttles and ferried to the colony as we speak - 15,000 colonists have already arrived, and more are en route to the station.

For now, the colony will be closed to foreign nations, with the exception of our allies. However, that may change as we become more familiarized with the station and time progresses.
