In a stunning move, and just hours after delivering his biannual address to the Senate, Consul McCallister resigned from his position as head of state, on the eastern steps at the Executive Manor. The announcement quickly sparked heated debates throughout the government and nation.

Citing increased concerns over his health, which had begun to seriously deteriorate over the past two months, McCallister officially offered his resignation during a live speech. Under the law, the senior member of the Senate - currently Senator Hawkins - would fill the vacant office; this is viewed as the main factor in the vehement and vocal opposition to McCallister's resigning, and some are calling for an emergency election.

Senator Hawkins, a member of the Senate of Majorities for nearly twenty years, first being elected at the age of twenty-four, has been a controversial figure in Eredronian politics. From his support of military force to put down the separatist movement in Ariin and advocation of an unconventional military response to Galdania during The Shining War, to his harsh criticism of social welfare, Hawkins has been the source of many debates; at the same time, Hawkins holds great support among much of the population, especially in the northern industrialized region of Eredron.

McCallister's resignation will officially take effect in twelve hours, at which time Hawkins is expected to assume the title and position himself; the senator is currently abroad, and enroute to the capital.

Overriding calls for national elections, Senator Hawkins was sworn in today as Consul of the Confederated Republic of Eredron and Her Principalities. The ceremony took place outside the Senate Chambers, attended by an estimated 3,000 - almost half of whom were protesting. After being sworn in, Hawkins immediately retired to the Executive Manor; his senior staff cited concerns over foreign developments as the reason for Hawkin's abrupt departure.

Former Consul, George McCallister, delivered a few remarks before the ceremony, before leaving to his private estate on the Kel'los Isle.
