From President to King

OOC:
I’ve decided to just forget about the retirement and get this done.
IC:
“King Santos? That’s what is on the mind of many in the Senate today as it is rumored that certain members have begun to ask if it was possible. Citing the need to strengthen the governments it is reported that several members of the Senate and House of Representatives are putting forth a proposal to grant President General Santos enough power that he would in a sense become King…”
Gregory watched the news report with a snicker to himself. Oh if they only knew. He couldn’t help but chuckle as he sat back in his office and rocked the chair slowly. It was going to be a easy transition from one government to another. Of course there would be the occasional speed bump, however by the time anyone managed to rise up and figure out what he was up to he would disband the Senate and the House and declare himself King. He had positioned people who he would of course entitle nobility to after all was said and done however for the time being Gregory bided his time. Planning his coronation already in secret he was prepared down to the last detail. He had even contacted other military leaders within the Republic. They had fully agreed, that the nation at this time, after taking on the Arda head nation needed a strong government, one with little oversight or hindrance from the Senate.
The only problem, which had arisen, however was the problem of an heir; Gregory de los Santos was single for the past two centuries and had pretty much hadn’t had a date for a little longer than that. Several Generals raised their heads at this, they saw nothing wrong with such a move, if the President could not birth and heir then it was possible for him to pick an heir. This was something he was reluctant to do, if he picked an heir his likely hood of dealing with an assassination attempt would have jumped six to eight fold. No he thought to himself That would not be at all acceptable to try and have my own military attempting to kill me. To appease the hardliners however he said he would appoint an heir once he himself was ready to step down and on no others time table. This kept the military quiet as they gave President Santos the support he needed to declare a monarchy outright.
However legality was what he wanted most, and to get it he would need to wait for the Senate to approve of such an action. It would take several days though, he pondered calling up some of his allies and informing them of the situation. Tilting his head up slightly he looked at the ceiling and thought of the responses he would get over the phone. He wanted to get a surprise, but he didn’t want the shit to hit the fan if some of his allies thought that this would cause a civil war. His left foot tapping onto the carpeted floor beneath him it was still a tempting thought to just leave them in the complete dark. Either way they would find out in a few days when the Senate made its announcements of the far reaching new laws which shifted more of the power away from the Senate and House over to the President General.

It took nearly a day, the single session going far into the night. Two AM coming and going by and the Senate was still deadlocked, however as per Senate rules when important nation changing issues were brought up the House could not close without having the matter resolved. Even Gregory watched the first two hours but when it appeared as if nothing would get done soon he flipped channels and watched something else. By one in the morning he was fast asleep. He decided he would just read about it in the paper. A lot of arguing had erupted in the Senate, the House of Representatives passing the measure to increase the power of President de los Santos almost unanimously only this road block remained. The main issues werent so much the laws themselves, few in the Senate had any real problems with allocating more power to the President, however what was at issue, was just what was to happen to their jobs.
It was true, Gregory himself never truely thought about it. It didnt concern him really. However as he woke up the next morning to see that the aruging was still going on. "Oh for the love of god, just pass the fvcking law and let me deal with your futures." He grumbled and thought to himself...he could have them all drafted and sent off to seperate corners of the country, or even have them deployed overseas. But that would raise a commotion and he was already going to cause one as it was. An aid carried the newspapers into his room and laided them out on Gregory's lap, while Gregory himself reached over to the side for his reading glasses. Blowing the dust off of them he slid them on and looked at the mornings headlines. "Great, just great, either this was printed before anything happened or people just dont care..."
The truth was a strange mix of both of Gregory's thought. The papers were printed in such a fashion that it happened shortly after the vote was called. However as reporters watched the events unfold no one really cared to look into the deeper signifficance of it all. The political apathty of it all would sicken some people however there was never a mandatory voting low and only 6-15% of all people in the Federal Republic ever voted on any real major issues. People were comfortable with a President who they knew growing up and trusted Gregory to see the nation through any and all challeneges. Most knew Gregory's passed, it was no longer much of a secret. The files concerning the Super Soldier experiments had been made public and after an initinal backlash, things quieted down. Many realized how stablizing an influence Gregory was and how much work he got done being solely concentrated on his job.
This translated into the current apathy expressed by the masses of people and while there was a minority of those who felt what the President was doing was wrong, they were just that, a minority. Our of nearly two billion, the number of people who opposed the measure was trivial. Scattered protests were held around the nation, but they failed to draw any real hardcore supporters. Even the news agencies barely gave any cover to them. From his private house Gregory booed and hissed at the television as a protestor was catch being carried away by the cops kicking and screaming about police misconduct. Switching between one of the 24/7 news channels and the channel devouted to the political inner dealings of the nation, Gregory snickered softly to himself. "This is getting sad...I swear I think I see more Senators sleeping now than arguing....It'd be a shame if someone called in a bomb threat..."
Slapping his hands together and rubbing them back and forth Gregory was a prankster when he wanted to be. Calling up the entire SAC was his last major prank, this was certainly going to be entertianing to what otherwise would be a rather dull afternoon of waiting for something, anything to be resolved.

A package arrived for Gregory de los Santos; it was a relatively small package, perhaps sixteen inches square by a foot tall, and it was brought by a Menelmacari diplomatic courier to the office of the president himself.
Inside, as it turned out, was a note.
One cannot have a king without a crown, dear friend.
You have been talking about this for some time; I took the liberty of having made for you a gift. Wear it proudly, and rule justly and well.
Sincerely,
Lady Siri
Under the note, buried in mounds of bubble wrap, was a crown... a fine Elven crown, intertwining strands of finest gold and shining mithril. Set into it were nine diamonds, each cut into the shape of a five-pointed star, one for each of the nine states of NYNJ: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Five were arranged in a pentagon in the center, over the brow; the four others were placed in two horizontal lines of two each, flanking the central pentagon. It was a relatively simple but still very effective and beautiful design, and easily light enough to wear for as long as one wanted.
(OOC: It bears some resemblance to the crown Elrond wore in the council scene.)

Gregory contacted a few friends in the OSS, it was easy to make friends with them, people always wanted connections with Gregory, but it was more than that sometimes. These guys were also his poker buddies, and when the time came, these guys did a majority of the dirty work for the Federal Republic. He pulled strings left and right, it wasnt hard for him to do, and got it so that the call he placed wouldnt be traced back to him, but to a known drug den in some far reach of the country. It was funny really, he was not only spicing up life for the dull Senators but contributing to fighting crime in the Republic as well. The thought of it all had him dying of laughter each time he reached for the phone. A voice changer in his other hand he began to dial up...
After several breif rings the phone on the other end was picked up and before they operator could even finish the openning greeting Gregory got to work. "Beside of the freight elevator next to the building, there is a bomb. The government has intervined in our affairs long enough and it is time to kill you all while you ponder useless things..."Quickly hanging up the phone before his voice cracked with laughter Gregory knew this was only the first part. The black Lincoln Towncar pulled up behind the government building and a single OSS agent got out and moved quickly putting the grey bookbag next to the enterance of the Freight elevator. Making sure no one was around he then quickly ran back to the car and got in the passengers side, the driver putting it into drive and casually moved the car off down the street once more.
It took several moments before the security guard was able to arrive in the area and check on the freight elevator. Radio qued to talk as he spotted the bookbag, "Someone better call the bomb squad. We've got a suspicious looking package out here...and clear the Capital building." Gregory had popped a tape into his VCR and began to record as the Senate Channel began to show bewildered and confused Senators being woken up and informed of the bombs pressance. Of course the tape was the same one as the one which he kept Theallas's public arrest. He had begun a collection, shocking and embarassing moments from around the globe. Gregory found it absolutely histerical and then cut over Federal News Television as they began to cover the entire scene at the Capital building.
It took about ten minutes before the bomb squad arrived and another fifteen before a robot was sent to probe the unknown bookbag. During this time Gregory had recieved the package from Sirithil and was looking over the crown. A small smile coming over his face he sighed happy. He didnt know exactly what to feel at the moment, whatever it was, he knew it was a rather good feeling. Putting the crown down securely he would have the OSS transfer it over to their headquaters for safe keeping. For the time being, he went back to watching the ordeal as it unfolded. The bombsquad having moved the bookbag into a metal container on wheels in order to keep the blast from seriously damaging the building they prepared explosives to exploded the bookbag on their own.
After five minutes a police officer called out, "FIRE IN THE HOLE!"...a second later a loud boom and material was sent up into the air, along with lettuce. Shards of lettuce flew everywhere, the bag had several heads of the stuff along with C4 in order to increase the explosive potentional and shower the area with the green leaves. Few of the aids pieced together why Gregory was laughing so hard, the bomb squad officers looking shocked and angered at the practical joke they wondered who could have done such a thing. Attempting to find out where the call came from, they traced it exactly where they were suppose to. All the way back to the drug den. By the next day the den had fallen, and the inhabitiants rounded up and shot as per NYNJs tough drug laws.
Back in the Senate, the debate went on, it was nearing a close however, the bomb scare had sent the Senators into a frenzy to get this done before the people started to send real bombs after them. All the while though Gregory polished and cleaned the crown. Sighing happy, he tried to think of a way to repay Sirithil.

The vote had finally been made, after two and half days of constant bickering and listening to people move themselves to try and save their jobs the vote was made. President de los Santos was now close to being King. From the Senate and the House he recieved the power to declare war on a whim and the power to appoint people to certain positions without the consent of the Senate at all. Other minor powers were alloted to him as well, however it was just enough to ensure that the balance of power, unless changed by Gregory himself would forever remain in the Presidency. Or as Greg was now thinking, the Monarchy. He got his dress uniform out and made sure it was neatly pressed and ready, he had an announement to make soon. Very soon. Several infact. A coronation to plan, and a thank you gift as well to give.
He knew what he would give Siri, she would enjoy the post as well. Smiling brightly to himself he moved in his office slowly grabbing one aid and dancing rather happily with her before letting her go back to her work. The OSS had picked up the crown and managed to get a massive police escort along with several black SUVs to transport it the nearly fifteen miles North of NewYork City to the OSS headquaters in Westchester. From the way the convoy had been set up people would have easily mistaken it for President de los Santos moving through the country.
Gregory wasnt to be so lucky though, the phones to office now ringing off the hook, Senators and members of the House of Representatives calling to know if their jobs would still be needed. Of course Gregory played the good politican and reassured each and every one of them that their jobs were not only secure, but also since they didnt have as much responsability anymore, they would be working less, spending more time at home, and would see their families more often. This appeased many of them, and those who he couldnt get to be happy with any of his answers he told them off soundly. They would just have to deal with the new situation and Gregory said this bluntly silently writing a list down of people who would need to either disappear or have an eye kept on them in the future.
Of course even this wasnt enough to get Gregory down, he sighed happy and sat back in his chair. His feet kicking up onto the desktop he rested his hands on his chest, he told his personal assistant just what he was up to. The announcement wouldnt be made on TV, it would be done over the radio. television shows would be pre-empted of course, and the message would be broadcast over the TV, but Gregory didnt want many people seeing the glee in his face. He wanted to appear humble as he took this position of power.

Gregory picked up a pen and pulled out a sheet of paper with the offical letterhead. Well it would be a collectors item soon enough, everything would need to change soon enough. The Republic was changing, and changing rapidly. A letter addressed to his dear friend in Menelmacar..
My dear, dear friend, I thank you for the crown. I shall wear it proudly and think of you each time I address my people with it on. It is the single most kindest gift I have ever recieved from someone who wasnt human. This probably beats any gift I've ever recieved...well minus the private jet, which is my own. But even then, this a crown...a symbol of the new Monarchy, and what better way than to have it come from you. A fellow ruler...I've got a surprise for you, if I dont tell you already next time we talk, then you'll hear about it shortly. Dont worry, you'll love this surprise."
Putting the pen down Gregory made sure it was sent out on the next round of diplomatic dispatches heading toward Menelmacar. He wondered though with all the technology they both had, why they still resorted to pen and paper. After awhile though he settled on the notion that it was just a hell of a lot more classier than anything else. Pen and paper conveyed feeling and emotion that technology, save for the holographic imagining could not. It also felt good to write it out.

Horses were of the monarchies of old, there was no grand parade of ceremonial troops on horseback in this coronation parade.Side by side, M5 Rolling Thunder MBTs headed down the street. Cheering crowds of people on either side it had been sometime since they had seen a parade and this was one of those rare occassions. In the middle of the entire parade was a single M2A2 Bradley with Gregory de los Santos sitting atop of it waving to the cheering crowds. In military uniform he had a helmet atop of his head. They were traveling downtown to the capital building confetti filling the skies around the armored colum. In front and back infantry marched. They were out of the standard combat armor and in ceremonial uniforms with old M14 Rifles held at their left shoulders. Military band out infront, bagpipes blared and wailed the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Rather fitting that this consituted the last day of the Republics existance in its current form....
The preperations for the even had been done with some careful planning, what could be rushed, was. Gregory was determined to have as small of a coronation as possible. Foreign representatives werent even invited. If they wanted to see what was going on, they would have to watch the news on TV. Even the people on the streets werent exactly clear why the parade was taking place. All they knew was that Gregory de los Santos, the President was riding down the street in a military parade. A very odd sight at all to see him the slightly bit happy, or not working. At the capital building a string of judges stood representing the law and the will of the people. To the other side OSS Agents kept underguard the crown which was to be placed on Gregory's head.
From 9 am to 12am the parade took its time moving slowly till it reached the area of the capital building. The Bradley sitting infront of the capital building the, back door was openned up and Gregory stepped out of the IFV followed by two military generals also in uniform with helmets on. To the casual observer one might have mistaken this for a military coup, however the government was already effectively controlled by the military. The President and Vice President, while elected officals were also military officers. As they moved up the front steps of the capital building each of the three men removed their helmets and stepped through the massive oak doors which were held open.
The ceremony was meant to be short. Gregory didnt like the pomp and circumstance which came with Monarchies and he was going to cut corners where he could. Where other Monarchs had expensive and massive homes, he would remain his humble self. He would remember his unbringing and would not seek to make himself the almighty. Even the crowning by the judges and not clergy was symbolic. He wasnt a Monarch mandated by God, but by the people. Just as they had given him permission to rule in presidency, it was they who allowed him to be king now as well. The Generals stood one to each side of Gregory as the head judge moved to take the crown from an OSS Agent.
It was a recent gift from Menelmacar to which Gregory would make an announcement later on. For now he wanted to get this ceremony over with, a few unpoetic words spoken by the judge which would obviously be lost by the tide of history it took another thirty minutes before the crown was placed atop of the head of the past President. As this occured across the nation government workers did not get a break. Everything had to be changed, from Republic, over to Monarchy. It was no longer the Federal Republic, but the Federal Monarchy. Gregory was careful to keep some air of familiarity with his people. As the ceremony came to its end Gregory stepped outside with the Generals following behind him and the crown upon his head. The news agencies had been informed to focus in on Gregory and the crown for the express pleasure of certain people watching on the news.
The people were stunned, they were unsure of what to make of it. One of the tankers called out from his position on the turret with a loud yell, "Long live King Santos, and long live the Federal Monarchy!" Mob rule took over from there and the people cheered and followed in the soldiers example cheering on the new King. Of course some people cheered. Former members of the Senate, who had resigned in protest. As the ceremonies took place, and the eyes of reporters were trained elsewhere convient accidents were arranged and carried out. From sliced brake lines on their cars to purposed accidents occuring on the highway, to even "random" muggings which turned to murder. All of which was carried out by the OSS, which saw its funding start to grow slowly. A long neglected agency, Gregory began to realize its importance all to recently...

"But why do you want me to watch the news with you, mother?" Maglor seemed perplexed.
"Just come sit with me! It'll be special, you'll see..." Sirithil was beside herself with excitement. "Come on! Have some popcorn..." Indeed, there was a big bucket of buttery popcorn in her lap.
"Popcorn, mother? For the news?" Maglor shrugged, sat down, put an arm around Sirithil and reached for a handful of popcorn..."
"...and a surprise development from NYNJ tonight, the President has crowned himself King, apparently with overwhelming public support..."
The camera zoomed in on Gregory, wearing the crown.
"Look! Look, Maglor... I sent him that crown... isn't it lovely?" :D
Maglor smiled, patted Sirithil gently on the shoulder, and took another handful of popcorn.

Gregory sighed to himself, a long tired sigh. He had made the announcement; it went over the radio waves like the leaders of old before the invention of the television. Things went smoothly, the coronation was over and he was officially King of the land. If the King was the physical form of the nation, then the same held true in the opposite direction. Shifting with the mood of their new King, several things changed, ambassadors were recalled from multiple nations, all with the same thing in common, they had long standing treaties with the Federal Republic and the diplomatic channels across most fronts went silent. An eerie silence, the guns were kept active and people could still be seen moving through the streets, they were just no longer broadcasting any sort of messages outward anymore.
Far away from the capital the military and Gregory discussed the future of the nation. Each one of the twenty-four men wondered to themselves if things would ever be the same in the country again. They were unsure though and could only see for the moment what was happening in the here and now. Gregory had disappeared from the capital entirely after the coronation to meet with the various high-ranking officers for the meeting and everything was kept in secret. Few people knew of the meeting outside of the military and the OSS and it helped to keep other nations from bothering Gregory directly.
To ensure that Gregory remained safe an OSS agent was assigned to guard him from his close-knit group of nine friends. They would work in shifts of sometimes two or three and would watch Gregory and ensure that if he needed anything from a local town they would go and get it for him without himself being exposed entirely. For the time being, Vice President Generosa was up at bat for the entire country once more. His post had yet to be changed over to Regent, but it would be coming in the later days. The last acts committed unofficially by Gregory would be carried out to a t...the embassies shutting down as well as the halt in diplomatic traffic, everything relating to the outside world was grinding to a slow and steady halt.
The embassies, which were ordered to leave, had been given ample amount of time to pack up and proceed to leave. Only one nation Menelmacar was granted an unlimited amount of time to get ready and underway. Trade ties, and even military ties were being declared null and void now that the government had changed. The only words from Gregory de los Santos on the matter were short and to the point, “We do this, because as we’ve changed our government, I feel that we must change ourselves as well.” It was basically an open invitation to any nation which once had a treaty with the Federal Republic to renegotiate said treaty with the new Monarchy.
While not self-sufficant, the nation would need to learn to be for the time being. Rationing which already was underway in the Republic due to the outset of war against Melkor on Mars, stockpiles of materials were at the ready. Most of it was deemed for military service however without nearly as many troops called up as what was first believed the stockpiles sat unused. Gregory made sure that wasn’t the case for much longer as he opened up the stockpiles slowly and materials which saw prices skyrocket were brought back down to decent levels. The stoppage in trade affected a broad range of nations, except one, Menelmacar. Merchant ships continued to flow from both human and elven ports. Gregory had made sure that over the past few years contracts and trade deals were diversified more and more, and goods which would normally be brought in from Menelmacar, were sought elsewhere. Anything desperately needed, private channels would be used through nations such as Knootoss and Der Angst, who could be paid enough to keep silent. However that was to be it. The nation as well as Gregory was in for a lot of soul searching.

"What the heck just happened over there?" Túrelio asked.
"Looks like Santos crowned himself king... palace scuttlebutt has it the Lady commissioned the crown and sent it as a gift," his aide replied. "She must be positively giddy about it."
"If that's the case, what just happened to our military alliance with them?" asked the Prefect, somewhat incredulous.
"Everyone lost treaties, milord, it looks like... I suppose us keeping the trade deal was a nod to Siri... they seem to just want to renegotiate. Like the Soviets did back in 1917."
"There's a lovely pattern to follow, that of the Soviet Union," Túrelio muttered softly. "Well, all right... get me their secretary of state... or their foreign minister, or vizier, or whatever the hell they're going to call him now."

Well we checked through the records and we found an ancient clause in Slutbum Wallah's unification treaty, when the Empire of Slutbum Wallah became the Republic (it didn't last long but the laws of unification have never been repealed). It states that should any of our neighbours openly revert from democracy to dictatorship, monarchy or other non-democratic form then Slutbum Wallah must declare immediate war to revert the nation back to it's people.
So the Morally Bankrupt Utopia of Slutbum Wallah declares war on New York and New Jersey. We won't be sending troops or aircraft, our ships won't fire at yours and trading will continue as normal. In fact, the only difference will be that Ambassador Dupplespud, currently residing in your capitol, will be reclassified as a spy and sent an official Spy Starter Kit, complete with fake moustache and baggy coat.

Howard Watts, the Secretary of State, was glad his title hadn't changed; nothing (just being implemented but its still sketchy.) in the high levels of government had really changed except for the seals and title of the country. A red light flashed on his desk and he moved to the recieve button pressing down onto it. "Hello?Who's there?"
"Howard, ol buddy... it's Túrelio over in Vinyatírion. I tell you, you really dropped a bit of a bomb on me today. What's up over there?"
"I dont know know anymore Túrelio, I got kept in the dark about the whole King buisness already, this renegotiating of treaties is just one of those things the King thought would go perfect with the new government."
Túrelio nodded, his brow furrowed. "Well, the previous treaties seemed to work out well enough for both of us, I should think. Does his majesty have any specific problems with any of our agreements that he felt should be re-addressed?"
Howard shook his head from side to side, but noticed everytime he did that the screen flickered a bit. His right hand moved off to the side as he jotted that technical issue down. "I've looked over the treaties time, and time again. They were rather fair to both sides. I think this is something political. Both home and international. I think Gregory wants to show the masses that this isnt the Republic anymore...odd."
Túrelio nods. "Here, I'm bringing up the old treaties now on my computer. I'll just rearrange the clauses, change a few wordings here and there on minor issues, and you can present it as a newly renegotiated treaty. I'm sure Greg isn't actually familiar with the language of them, as long as we go through the motions it shouldn't be a problem, right?"
Howard nodded his head noting the lack of problems with that, and he grumbled somthing about not being able to say no. "Gregory may be a General, but he isnt dumb, he's had more than enough time to look 'em over, but I think - I stress I think - that was his plan all along. Either that or he needs a vacation. He left us without a military treaty in the middle of a war; he's definitely stressing out."
Túrelio nodded again. "Give me a moment..." He could be seen to shift off to one angle, typing away on a keyboard, and occasionally reaching out and physically moving blocks of text - the holo-image's response to his movements, the Menelmacari version of cut and paste. After about five minutes of this he turned back. "Okay, I'm sending you the new treaties now... they're fundamentally the same as previously with some cosmetic changes. Look them over, tell me if there's anything that needs addressing."
It wasn't long as Howard looked it over and changed several things, mostly the typo of being called the Federal Republic, but he wasn't going to mention that. "Nope, it looks good on this end. I dont think anyone will have any real complaints."
"Sounds good... here, fire over your revisions so I can see."
"Lesse if I have this right...hold on..." Howard took a deep breath and hoped the system didn't nosedive as he returned the file with the revisions. However, the entire image lost color and the Elven Prefect was now in black and white. "Oh, that's just great..."
Túrelio blinked. "Is that the system we sold you?" he asked. Serindë had warned the New Yorkers of possible compatibility issues. Bandwidth, mostly. "Try adjusting the horizontal gain..."
Howard shook his head but tried anyway, "It's a homegrown military system, they got it to work just fine on the Glorious Heritage, and one of the carriers, but everywhere else..." Howard slammed his fist onto the table and color returned. "Better."
"I'll have some of my people head out there to check it out. It might be the wiring. Anyway, these changes seem fine, the Lady gave me clearance to do whatever was needed to get the treaties back in place, provided I didn't cede you guys the capital or something." He chuckled.
Howard laughed and nodded his head a bit. "I'm pretty sure the King would like to extend his apologies to the Lady about this whole affair. I can't imagine how much trouble this caused."
"Just a bit of panic, and a few so-called pundits getting hot under the collar about a perceived snub. I think once you guys sign the new treaties it'll all be nicely smoothed over." Túrelio smiled.
"Dont worry, I'll make sure the King signs it before he goes for his afternoon stroll through Central Park."
Túrelio grinned. "Lovely! Glad we could get this all patched up... remind me to buy you a drink sometime."
Howard gave the thumbs up to his counterpart who was several thousand miles away. He could easily see how this was going to replace video conferancing soon."Dont worry, next time you're in the city, I'll make sure to remind you. You have a good day, and dont forget to tell the good Lady how sorry we are for the commotion."
"You too, Howard," Túrelio said with a smile. "And I will. I'm sure she'll be most reassured."
Howard reached over toward the disconnect button and before pressing it said, "Okay its been good seein' ya again Túrelio." And then pushed down on the disconnect button. The image fading and Howard went back to work.

To His Majesty King Gregory
Congratulations and the best of wishes to you! Long may you reign;long may your nation benefit by your wise rule.
I am sending to you as ambassador extraordinary my cousin, Archduchess Maria Teresa, who will also bring you an offer. If you recall, Lavenrunz stepped in to help you during a time of crisis by providing materiel for war. And we have a direct and close alliance which remains in spite of your departure from SATO. It is my hope that we can grow closer in the coming times.

To: Gregory de los Santos (eyes only)
Congratulations, Gregory. And keep your eyes open. I know you already know all about the problems of governance, but being a monarch adds a whole new set of angles to consider.
You'll do fine, though.

To Empress Aurora von Sachshausen:
We shall wecome the Archduchess with welcome arms, and treat her as if you were visiting the nation in her stead. I can not wait to hear the proposed offer, as we have had such close ties in the past. No one in the Federal Monarchy has forgotten our debts owed to your people for their support in darker times.
To Emperor Vahn Winfield I:
We wish to thank your nation for the support, and hope your reign is just as long and fruitful as our own, if not longer.
To High Queen Sakura Kitsuki:
Thank you for your words of encouragement. I've found out thus far how things are radically different, my former Senators have become Advisors to the Crown and all the titles of noblility to be handed out, of which if anyone of them thinks they are getting a grand party, they will be sorely mistaken. Traditional monarchy, we are not.

The Ministry of Information went over the baggage, the plane itself down to the latest repairs and adjustments. With terrorism the bugbear that it currently was, they would take no chances.
Archduchess Maria Teresa was the half sister of Archduke Amadeus, and thus was 4th in line for the throne of Lavenrunz. Fair haired, with dark blue almost violet eyes and delicate features, she was not as vivacious as Archduchess Magda (married to the Hegemon of Terraus) or as fashion model lovely as Archduchess Katerina (married to the High Prince of Estavia) but she was certainly pretty, had great personal charm and enjoyed life. Recently she had been Director of the Imperial Board of Charitable Organizations, which included the Lavenrunzian Red Cross and Branch of Amnesty International among them.
She was very interested in travelling to New York and Jersey, to see the happy results of the aid once provided by Lavenrunz...

At John F Kennedy International Airport a red carpet was prepared for the Lavenrunzian delegate. This would be the first foreign VIP to visit NYNJ in ages, and such was an occassion that even if the Archduchess wasnt the leader that she would be treated as if she was. The red carpet had the flags of Lavenrunz on the left and the flags of New York and New Jersey at the either side. Waiting for the delegate was a black limo and several well distinguished police and military vehicles. Gregory was kept up to date about his allies, and he knew full well what was going on with terrorism in Lavenrunz, and against Lavenrunz targets. F-15C Eagles and F-16D Fighting Falcons had been dispatched from nearby airbases and were pretty much to deal with either air or land targets in the form of hand held SAM operators.
On the ground two types of soldiers were visable, one of them ceremonial with rifles and bayonets attached, the other dressed fully in combat gear. They wore massive grey/dark grey power armor and looked more like robots than actual humans. The rifles they carried were massive assault rifles that stretched nearly the length of the entire armored soldier and appeared as if they had enough punch to smash through even light armored vehicles. They definately were not there for ceremony reasons. On the outside of the airport local law enforcement officers of NYCs Elite Emergency Services Unit(ESU) stood at the ready with submachine guns and bomb sniffing K-9s.
All of the precautions were clearly visable to anyone who approached the airport and Greg hoped it sent a positive message to Lavenrunz, that he would do his best to protect any of their delegates. He had also hoped this had a farther reaching affect to get even more delegates to visit NYNJ on the spur of the moment. Time would tell though...

[OOC: I know you stated that in a letter, but I'll assume it's public news...)
Email from Sukothai to Gregory:
[code:1:b6d815bdc6]It has come to my attention that that your Senators have become "Advisors to the Crown." While the Republic respects New York and Jersey's right to choose its own government, the reduction of a legislature from possessing real legislative powers to a merely advisory role is a truly disturbing event. If you are to be a monarchy, it is my sincerest wish that it be a constitutional monarchy, and that it never degrades, even voluntarily, into an absolutism of the type that caused Louis XIV to utter the wretched phrase "L'Etat, c'est moi." It would be wise if to remember the old aphorism, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."

The Archduchess looked outside with some approval. They were no fools in New York and Jersey...indeed, they were some of Lavenrunz' most level headed allies. She wondered though if rumors about Gregory de Los Santos' drugged state were true...
Along with her was Field Marshal von Thessmar, elderly venerable Chief of the Imperial General Staff under Empress Joanna. He had some important things to discuss with the higher ups in the NYNJ military. In spite of his age--he was nearly eighty, he was erect in carriage and alert as he walked behind the Archduchess with the new ambassador to NYNJ, Baron Schiller.
When they heard their national anthem, the Lavenrunzians stood at attention, the Archduchess with a hand over her heart, the Field Marshal and the Ambassador saluting. When it came to an end, the Archduchess walked forward, smiling and confident.

When the delegates finally entered the limosine at the end of the red carpet they were promptly rushed from the airport and down closed highways toward the city. Crossing over the tri-borough bridges built in the city during the height of the Great Depression, they were each a massive span crossing the East River. Going down Park Avenue which was completely closed off save for the police or military vehicle traveling on the opposite side of the avenue going north or sometimes even going parallel to the convoy. From Park Avenue they went over to Madison which was also shut down for security reasons. Above the street level NYPD Helicopters, which in their own right were just repainted military gunships with better optical equipment and inferior weapon systems, hovered and watched the rooftops for anyone who wasnt suppose to be there.
The entire trip took about 40 minutes and when it was over they were infront of a massive glass tower which stretched into the air. The seat of power was at the Empire State Building which normally would be open to the public appeared today to be a massive fortress. The same mix of ceremonial and active combat troops were visable as the limo stopped at another red carpet. A Federal Marine walking toward the passenger door near the Empire State Building and openning up the door helping the Archduchess out of the car first, followed by the General and the Ambassador. The door shut behind the trio the convoy pulled out and two men approached the group.
They were dressed in expensive Armani buisness suits and they held tablet personal computers under their arms. The one on the right was instantly recongizable as the former Defense Secretary now Defense Minister Joseph Stetson, the other one was alittle harder to recongize but it wasnt completely difficult to recongize the Minister of Foreign Relations, a recently appointed man, the press had called him a git who got the title solely because he was owed a favor by the now King de los Santos. Whether it was true or not was yet to be seen. Joseph on the otherhand was a seasoned soldier and red tape beaurecrat and was the first one to speak, "It is good to welcome the Archduchess and her delegation to the new Federal Monarchy. King de los Santos is awaiting you inside, admist the top floor. We have much to dicuss and the King wishes to dispense with the normal pleasentries including any formal parties and such to get straight to buisness."

The Lavenrunzians admired the urban splendour of the city. There were more tall buildings than in the whole of Lavenrunz altogether. The Archduchess thought it was a bit overwhelming and rather technocratic, but impressive nevertheless. She wondered if people missed greenery; you could not imagine Hofburg without gardens, for instance.
The Field Marshal noticed the military looking police units. He felt weary; it seemed that the whole world had to be on the alert for the new manner of warfare.
The Archduchess said gravely, "I am here to attend his Majesty's pleasure and that of the Empress, of course. Thank you, Herr Minister, for your courtesy. May I also congratulate you on your new appointment?" she remarked pleasantly as they went into the elevator.
New York and Jersey
21-02-2004, 21:23
The elevator was designated Private Express and for good reason. It went straight to the top, quickly, and made no stops whatsoever. Inside of it Joseph and the Minister of Foreign Relations, Jim Mertins, stood facing the delegation with their backs to the elevator doors. Joseph smiled slightly and shook his head abit, "Its only a change in title Archduchess, nothing more than that..." Joseph was cut off the nearby gentlemen who finally spoke up, "Its more than just a change in title, its entirely new protocals all together, excuse me for being so silent, my name is Jim Mertins, I am the new minister of foreign affairs. It is a pleasure and an honor for the Federal Monarchy to host you all while you are staying here. For security purposes how long will your visit in NYNJ be?"
A small chime at the top as the elevator came to a slow and then complete stop. As the doors openned up the three delegates were in for a breath taking view. The top floor was easily a massive room, like any other throne room. It was obvious now that Gregory had planned this for quite sometime.A long red carpet led to a massive expensive oak desk and luxourious chair at the end. On both sides of the walkway there was what appeared to be a well kept garden of bushes, and flowers, and other assorted plantlife which stretched upward and even out onto the red carpet itself. Massive crimson curtains were drawn to the sides and light shone through to fill the entire office which had windows on its north side. The view was of course like the office, breathtakingly large. Other office towers stood out, however in the middle of it all was Central Park which stretched out into the distance but was surrounded by tall buildings.
"Welcome to the renovated New York and New Jersey...dont mind all the security, we really are a friendly people...we just dont like terrorists." Called a voice from the rightside. A shifting of bushes could be seen as Gregory stood up and stepped from out of the side garden holding a pair of sheers in his right hand. "I hope your flight went well." Said with little emotion as he walked over to the massive table which could easily have all his ministers take a seat at and have a meeting. However on the northern side it was only his luxurious oak and leather chair. On the otherside slightly smaller less luxurious chairs were arranged, three in all facing not him, but all facing directly north. "Please have a seat."

"Thats good." Gregory said leaning back in his chair, he openned up a side drawer and put the sheers atop of all the other gardening equipment. "Excuse my little eccentricities. Gardening happens to be a very relaxing hobby..." Said as Joseph moved to stand to his right side, and Jim to his left. "Also please forgive my lack of major pleasentires. I dont really believe in the whole tradition monarchy bit of pomp and circumstance. Save for a few instances." Gregory smiled and hoped the Archduchess would understand where he was coming from on that one. Gregory had attended functions at Lavenrunz before and he knew they were tiring grand affairs.
"So, you have a proposal for me?"

Maria Teresa was taken aback. She had planned to introduce the whole thing rather more elegantly. But clearly he had no patience for this. However, ire suddenly rose in her; her von Sachshausen temper nearly took over.
Taking a deep breath, she said, "Ceremony is not entirely useless in Lavenrunz--it teaches us patience among other things. But that is not what I came here to say. The Empress wants a more direct alliance with New York and Jersey, and since you are now a King, you lack one thing--a Queen. Marriage to a person of blood royal would link you to another realm for other generations. This is not without drawbacks, but in the case of Lavenrunz we do not forget our allies. The Empress is offering me as your consort."

"Drawbacks? I'm walking on thin ice with my people because of the transition. I would like an explination of these drawbacks before I consider this. This is also no to mention the current state of Lavenrunz is well less than friendly to our allies. Your people recently put in a nationalist hothead over the previous Chancellor. The local papers call him Bridgette Iesus-lite, and I'm forced to agree. Also and the most important fact of the matter my dear Archduchess, I do not know you. I know your nation, and I know the former Empress. But both seem to be a hell of a long time ago."
Gregory looked over toward the direction of the new ambassador and then toward the direction of the General before looking forward toward the Archduchess once more. In the back of his mind he made a few mental notes to himself Well now, this is going absolutely wonderful...insult their government, the people, and if I get the chance insult the current ruler as well...oh god whats her name...frick what is it with all the governments I keep up with changing leaders..., he snapped out of his daze as the Archduchess spoke...

The Archduchess was coldly furious. "Herr...Your Majesty, you were the one who wanted bluntness. Very well, you shall have it. Frankly, it is astonishing to me that someone who has entirely reversed the trend of his nation's government is surprised that we have a government under Count Mirbach. Who I might add is doing a great deal towards world peace and towards the betterment of the state. So he finally broke the deadlock that Menelmacari policey had us in! I would like you to point out where Count Mirbach has willy nilly flung his Strategic Air Command into the skies and then suddenly withdrew them! And another thing. Lavenrunz is the Empress." she cocked her head at him. "All those meaningless little rituals you find so boring? They are called civilization, Majesty, they enable people to get to know one another. Sometime you might want to try it."
With that she got up before the astonished faces of the other Lavenrunzians and stormed towards the door.

John F Kennedy International Airport:
"This is flight tower, to Aelosian Shuttle, you have been granted permission to land at the 42nd Street Heliport, welcome to New York City."
Security had been caught completely off guard by this latest devlopement and the Franklin Delanor Roosevelt Highway had to be completely closed off to civilan traffic going both sides between a two mile zone. A limosine was instantly found to cater to the Elven princess as well as suitable escort for any foreign head of state. This created several massive traffic jams across all of Manhatten as the famous gridlock of the city streets was made even worse. Another problem was the finding of Aelosian flags. They had to be bought instead of being already in stock, a small embarassment which would go unnoticed by most.
Empire State Building, Gregory de los Santos's Personnal Office/Throne Room:
Gregory looked decidedly annoyed as he moved from his seated position behind the desk and jogged moving to cut off the Archduchess from the elevator. He didnt move threateningly or even appear threatening, but his height and body type made him an imposing figure none the less. "Now you listen here and you listen good, unlike your nation which has had centuries to have the population get used to the luxury of grand balls. Infact having extravagent, decadent events in New York City, would cause traffic and a headache for everyone in the city. I will not subjugate my people to that headache. As for your Count Mirbach, I will refrain from making further comments for fear of furthering this arguement. Now as to the S.A.C. it is better to have it on its toes, then asleep at the wheel. I dont throw it up for no reason whatsoever. As for civilization, I dont consider decadency of massive palaces, and parties civilization. I consider it a waste of the nations money supply. Which could be far better used toward education, and defense." His face was turning red, and he appeared to be getting slightly madder, but he retained his stance, making no ill movement other than to block the Archduchess, if she advanced forward he walked backwards as to not come into contact with her.
The shuttle landed in the airport, the gravitic drive still making the vessel float over the ground as the platform was leveled, covered in a red carpet.
With a smooth movement the Princess Aliria D'Hyru, Heir to the Everqueen, Head of the Great House of D'Hyru, Countess of the Craftworld, Jewel of the Sindarin, ArchDuchess of Alberthil and Marquise of Sairi Dimbar came out of the shuttle, smiling all the way down and followed by a handful of attendants and advisors. She approached to the welcome party, and nodded a little to show some respect to them.
"I'm here to see your new King, and to congratulate your people for making such a good choice, and to greet him as my peer and my everlasting friend until Mandos decides to separate us. Please take me to your King, please take me to the fair Gregory the First", she said in a regal tone, her figure for a moment surrounded by a white gleaming aura of pure light, looking like a fey out of a fairy tale.

IC:
The two security agents blinked as they looked at the Aelosian as if she was from another planet...well she was but they gave her bizarre looks as if she was from another universe entirely. One of them chimed in after a few seconds of akward silence, "Well ma'am, I'm sorry to inform you, New York and New Jersey doesnt have a Queen." The two OSS agents looked at each other once more, one of them leading the Princess to the nearby limo, while the second one brought up the rear of the delegation.
When the group was all situated in the limosine it quickly took off from the heliport and went along the FDR drive toward the direction of the nearest offramp making a beeline run toward the seat of power in the nation. The Empire State Building.

"Decadent?!" she exclaimed. "Don't tell me about how we waste money...when the money is most often spent entertaining arrogant foreigners so that they can brush off our hospitality while hogging and using our space for diplomacy!" Maria Teresa actually stamped her foot in rage. "Lavenrunz has fought for the oppressed, and stood up to terrorists and the worst kinds of tyrants! How dare you?" she looked near to tears of anger.
The Ambassador was gloomily wondering if his first deed would be to depart bearing news of a declaration of war.
The Field Marshal stood at attention, wondering what was going on. He couldn't help thinking that this would never have happened under Empress Joanna.

"You heard me all to well. Decadent. I've been to many other Monarchies in the world, and I know and I've seen exactly how they operate. And such things do not appeal to me. Now excuse me if my opinion hurts, but if you cant deal with harsh opinion then you've proved me right. Your nothing but a spoiled enclosed brat, who's never had her countries past questioned and would probably lose her temper the moment a newspaper here said something bad about you." He appeared to be calming down slightly. Taking a deep breath he stopped entirely now and stood silent for a few moments his head tilted down as he was composed in thought. Gregory was indeed an odd one at times, and he just stood there arms crossing over his chest looking downward toward the Archduchess.
"New York and New Jersey doesnt need a pretty face to be on my arm at any functions. The future Queen is going to inheret a lot of power from the disbanded Congress and I need someone with a coolhead who can stand being ribbed and prodded and have her past, and her country questioned. Everything I've said thus far has shown up as the opinion of my countrymen in the newspapers from one time to another. Keep in mind, I know full well what Lavenrunz has done in the past, and the great debt many nations including my own owe it in the advancement of peace. HOWEVER, that does not obligate me to not pull the gloves off with a marriage proposal and test the waters before I jump head long into a binding alliance."
Going silent for abit once more, Gregory raised his right hand to rub his chin and said. "Listen, we should seperate for abit and calm down. A limosine is downstairs waiting to take you to your accomidations in the City. We should meet again for dinner, and I promise politics will not be on the table for the evening...that is if you want, if you plan on leaving give my regards to the Empress if you will."
In the backround the Minister of Foreign Affairs looked overwhelmed, he knew if this went even worse he'd have some serious damage control to attend to. The Minister of Defense could only hide his face in his hand, he didnt think Gregory would have pushed as far as he did.

Maria Teresa looked stunned, and turned first white and then red. "Your...Majesty." she said. "I will take my leave of you for now, and rest somewhat. Allow me to say this," she said as she moved past him. "I don't find your game funny...or clever." she walked into the elevator and closed the door before anyone had a chance to follow her.
Aliria came down of the limo, her face still blushing by the stupid mistake she made in the airport. "Asking for a queen?. What was I thinking?. A skilled courtier like me and committing such etiquette mistakes?. I'm sure I said that just because I want to see King Gregory in love and married to a nice woman, although that's just an excuse", she said to herself.
She approached the door of the Empire State Building smiling and admiring the huge and impressive architecture of the human builders. "I want to see the King, no more no less", she said to her companions, "Take me to him"

He leaned forward as he yelled that at the top of his lungs. He moved away from where he was standing and headed back over toward the direction of his desk. At the bottom the Archduchess would run into Aliria who would be waiting for the express elevator up to the top floor. Gregory looked at the Ambassador and the General, calming down considerably he raised his hands up toward the chairs still.
"Please, excuse me, I hope I didnt make either of you feel uncomfortable. Please sit. I'm sure you arent here just for show. May I inquire as to what you two wished to talk about?" Gregory said in a cooler more buisness like tone. A lot different from the engaging indignant tone he had before. Leaning back in the chair he tried to get comfortable, although he found that after getting into such an exchange he needed to blow off some steam. I'll sneak sometime at the OSS Firing Range before dinner...that'll help me unwind... He thought to himself and waited for the two stunned Lavenrunzians to go on with buisness as if what happened earlier was something typical.
