International Fencing Championships!

06-02-2004, 01:37
To celebrate the creation of the Dominion of Mybodi, the Department of Recreation has decided to announce the first annual International Fencing Championships. Each country is invited to send competitors to this, the official sport of Mybodi. The rules are below:

1. Each country may send up to six competitors, and no more than one in each category (men's and women's foil, epee, and sabre)

2. Depending on the number of enteries, there may or may not be seeding.

3. Any breaking of FIE law will result in disqualification.

Please telegram the Mybodian government if you wish to compete.
Thank you and good luck!
06-02-2004, 03:56
Although the thought of violence is heavily downplayed in Briangloid, we will be sending competitors for each of the six categories. Our Minister of Recreation wishes to see singlestick and quarterstaff competitons added in the future.

We wonder if we are able to substitute the traditional weapons in accordance to our Orcish Knight's doctrine of the Skell. The Skell is a fencing weapon, but is used only by our Knights. It's design and focus is unknown to any other race.

If we are able to emphasize fencing with skells rather than inferior human weapons, I may in accordance choose Knights to follow your festivals.

The Department is not familiar with the Skell, and it is not a recognized weapon by the FIE. Please describe the Skell, and we will debate whether it's use is legal or illegal.

The following countries have entered the competion as of now:

Dominion of Mybodi
Commonwealth of Briangloid
Incorporated States of Talyllyn
Peaceful Tao of Rondebosch
Kingdom of Lovisa

However, Talyllyn has yet to send a roster. Rondebosch will be sending their roster soon. Also on the waiting list are the 13 Clans of High Orcs, as they wish to enter a weapon unknown to anyone in the fencing world (called the Skell). Until we know the nature of this weapon, High Orcs must send a roster of the normal forms of fencing. Application closes Feb. 14, so sign up and send in those rosters soon!
NEWI Cefn Druids
07-02-2004, 03:22
The NEWI Cefn Druids Fencing Comittee (NCDFC) have called upon six of the country's top fencers to participate in these up-coming event. they are as follows:

Women's foil: Trevor Wicks (yes, a woman called Trevor)
Men's foil: Trevor Uptons
Women's epee: Ellen Dickens
Men's epee: Jonathan Wilkinson
Women's sabre: Carmel Epicott
Men's sabre: Trevor Greaves

We hope that our team exceeds our expectations of them by staying in for at least one second round appearance.

The Protectorate of West Hyrule would be happy to sponsor a singlestick and quarterstaff competition in the future, as well as a drunken boxing contest.

The Grand Duke himself will attend the tournament in men's epee, being a champion epee fencer himself. Otherwise we will not be sending any fencer.

OOC: In real life I actually do fence epee :)
12-02-2004, 16:09
Well, that is delightful to hear! A world leader, actually participating in the International Fencing Championships! Good luck, your Highness.

OOC: Really? What club?

12-02-2004, 16:17
OOC: I fenced foil for 8 years (I really miss it - I haven't fenced in 5 years), and was a referee's assistant at the World Fencing Championships that were held in Cape Town, South Africa in 1997. It was one of the best experiences of my life.
13-02-2004, 00:35
OOC: South Africa, eh? Did you go with a team, or just happened to get a job there? I fence for my high school team, and plan on fencing more USFA now.
13-02-2004, 00:43
OOC: I go to Fortune Fencing in LA, where I fence epee. I also fence in my high school team, where I am assistant coach.
13-02-2004, 00:55
Graudenz, you could still enter the competition. Just telegram a roster of six names and the weapons they fence. We could always use more!

The weapon the Knight carries is the skell. As you can see, it's much like a fencing blade mounted on a guantlet with dual axe-fins to act as a shield. For this measure, the Fencing Skell will be augmented without the Finned Bucker unit. We feel that it will act much as an épee blade with an augmented handle (So you wield it like a gun), only it is wrist mounted.

We hope you will be able to overlook the minor differences to be able to relate that it's still a viable weapon. Only the High Orcish Knight ever learns the ability to use a Skell, and its training is incredibly extensive.

OOC: South Africa, eh? Did you go with a team, or just happened to get a job there? I fence for my high school team, and plan on fencing more USFA now.

It was a volunteer position offered to fencers from local clubs and high schools (and some people even came down from Johannesburg (other side of the country) to help out). The older fencers with strong fencing experience, such as myself (by that stage I was coaching beginners at my local club), were offered referee assistant positions, which were the best ones to get, as we spent all day on the piste sitting right behind the referees operating the electronic scoring boxes with remotes, and interacting with the referees (and sometimes the fencers), who came from all over the world, of course. We were the only volunteers allowed on the piste. The "lesser" volunteer positions often meant that those people didn't even get to see any of the competition.

It was taxing, though. We worked 11 hour days, practically non stop, for a 6-day period, but it still was, as I mentioned, one of the best experiences of my life.
13-02-2004, 13:47
High Orcs, your Skell will be allowed, if you only make your "Finned Buckler" 14 cm. in diameter, the legal width for a regulation epee bell guard. Other than that, your Skell seems OK to go, and if you can attach the regulation hand guards to the Skell, even better. However, we must be assured that the Skell will not cause any extensive bodily harm to any fencer. If such a thing occurs, your team must be disqualified. Please send your roster of six fencers by Friday.
Thank you,
Dept. of Recreation

OOC: Rondebosch, it sounded like one hell of a time. I hope that someday, I could go to one of those meets, if not to compete, then to volunteer and see the action.
14-02-2004, 00:23
Sorry, when I said Friday, I meant today Friday. However, due to confusion, I'll extend the deadline to tomorrow.
15-02-2004, 16:29
Saturday was the last day that anyone could send in a roster for the International Fencing Championships. However, High Orcs has signed up and not sent a roster. If they send a roster by the end of today, then their fencers will compete. If not, then nuts to them. Sorry. Fencing begins tomorrow. Good luck!

Ooooh. Rondebosch is happily mid-range mediocreish. Hooray!

Heh.

Seriously, though, how do you calculate this stuff, and can you maybe post individual results of each bout (just so that I can feel like I'm participating a little more, I guess, since then we can all track everyone's progress)?
19-02-2004, 19:29
OOC: Will you post up the order of the DE bouts, and then their results? Also, cheers to Mybodi for an interesting RP.
IC: The Grand Duke is immensely enjoying his opportunity to finally fence wioth worthy opponents again.

(You listed Virakon twice. Belca is in Saber. Belca is the only "Lesser Orc" attending, so unlike the other two, he's not 7-8 feet tall and completely ambidextrious (The other two will enjoy switching it up to fence left handed if it serves them to have a better advantage (and it will; Left-Handed Fencers are Uber). Belca's title "PointBlade" is a very honored thing. "PointBlade" is given to the best Lesser Orc within the nations. He is in charge of leading the initial charges of melee forces. He's been in over 30 full-scale wars, and has led the charging point in every single one, and has come out of them every time virtually unscathed. It's extremely suspicious for a Lesser Orc to live so long and be so mighty.)

Whoa. We definitely got killed there.
21-02-2004, 07:10
Any chance you could post the records and indicators? :?:
21-02-2004, 08:27
Damn, I would have loved to join this.... I was in a beginner's fencing class a year ago, for about four months. I don't remember much, but it was great fun, Id've loved to participate.
21-02-2004, 17:48
High Orcs: Yes, that was a typo. Belca is listed in our sabre pools, I just messed up, that's all.
Briangloid: If you really want your records and indicators, telegram me. That goes the same for anyone, because typing all of those would take up lots of time. And don't worry, your women's team is making a strong showing.
Graudenz: Thanks for the props! And yes, DE bouts and results will be posted, along with any flagrant penalties (yes, we penalize).
Maraka: Hey, there's always the next one!
21-02-2004, 17:59

Question:
There are 9 entries in the men's brackets. Is there going to be a playoff for 8th place?
23-02-2004, 03:46
To put it in a word:

Yes.
01-03-2004, 16:32
I'm sorry that I haven't posted the DEs yet, but I've been really busy with schoolwork and all. They should be posted by the end of the week. Seriously.
