Various international news sources:
Al Jumhuriyah Al Khals Dimuqratiyah labelled Corrupt Dictatorship, President expels United Nations!

"Are they stupid?" Asked Prime Minister Habib Kilany of the ejected UN workers. "Can they not read a map? Do they not know where they are? This is the Democratic Republic of Al Khals! It is not hard to understand!"

This after the UN reported that in the opinion of its observers the Al Khali people were labouring under the corrupt rule of a President who's position could not be challenged, and a ruling party that remained such only by pledging unfaltering loyalty to that man (President Omar Qottar).

"It was an experience I can't get out of my head." Said (name), a UN worker from (nation). "We had just the night previously dispatched a report to the UN office in PAKARYAISTAN in which we called the government (of Al Khals) a corrupt dictatorship. We were near the centre of Tkrat, which is a very nationalist town. We knew people wouldn't like it, then we heard shouting from the lobby (of the Omar Qottar National Hotel) and a gunshot, I think."

A second UN worker, (nation) national (name) picks up the story, "A concierge came to our rooms, which were all on the same floor, and told us that the KSU was here and that we should pack our bags quickly."

The timing of the UN's expulsion from Al Khals has worried many, especially in light of yet unsubstantiated rumours that new facilities being laid out in several locations are in fact the beginings of a nuclear programme. These sites now look likely to be developed to whatever is their end without UN supervision. They are not the only causes of concern to be found -or not- in the apparently closing republic.

(For those who may wish to know who's who and what's what in Al Khals (such as what the acronym KSU stands for) Everything Al Khali! (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=104458&highlight=) )

Al Haqiqa Al Khals- Qottar psychotic says UN; demonstrations in Tkrat

Adding insult to injury after the recent United Nations reappraisal of the Qottar government as corrupt the organisation today called the President psychotic.

This, said PM Habib Kilany, was a truly unprofessional and highly offensive reaction to Via'di'arl's expulsion of the UN from the Democratic Republic after their first incompetent judgement. Tkrat residents came out in support of PM and President alike, thousands of Al Khalis there leading nation-wide demonstrations against the UN and its hostile constituent states.

(Very well, but don't say you weren't warned when Al Khals is forced hopelessly far into Qottar's domination and the republic becomes a centre for anti-globalisation terror or such!)

"Obviously!" Insisted PM Kilany, thanking Al Anbar for its apparent support in a time of international infamy.

(OOC: I would just like to add that I did not set out to launch a war on the UN as so many young nations seem intent to do. The whole story angle only struck me after Al Khals slipped from Authoritarian Democracy, which was about what I was aiming at, to Corrupt Dictatorship, which I was trying to avoid admitting ;) )

OOC: Makes sense. However, I can't respond because I don't have diplomatic contact with any Arab nations.

OOC: Is Al Khals a very religious country (ala Iran & Saudi Arabia) or more secular (Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon) or in between (Syria, Jordan)? Does your government tend more Socialist policies or more Right-ist policies?

Secret Telegram to _Taiwan from Ministry of Oil

The Arab Socialist Republic of Al Anbar would like to inquire about your current deal with Al Khal oil.

The Arab Socialist Republic of Al Anbar is the supplier of low cost, high grade oil and natural gas worldwide and is substantially cheaper than most other providers of such natural resources.

We may be able to work out a special deal for you, should you take your business to Al Anbar.

Signed,

Minister of Oil

ooc:

Al Khals' democratic government breaks down thus:
President OMAR QOTTAR
Prime Minister Habib Kilany; Al Khals Kadira Republic party (161 seats)
Opposition leader Amal Abeid; Islamic Progress party (24 seats)
Third party head Atef Al Haddam; Arabic Unity party (8 seats)
(6 independent seats, usually filled by village leaders pursuing matters of local interest)

As you can see, the ruling party is really not in a position to be challenged. There are elections, but they're hardly frequent and strangely, no matter what problems may best the nation, AKKR always wins..

To directly address Al Anbar's questions-
The government is generally considered secular, much to the annoyance of almost all opposition politicians. Islam is by far the dominant religion (96%), and the city of Salahbad, considered the spiritual heart of the nation, operates almost as if under hard-line Islamic law. Qottar allows it to continue such in return for loyalty from the religious figureheads of the city, which they give grudgingly.

Qottar recently nationalised all major Al Khali-owned industry and increased taxes and public spending in a fairly dramatic shift to the left.

ic: Via'di'arl is keen to assure Taipei of continued exports. In truth it is since Qottar's nationalisation schemes that the economy has begun to pick up, allowing significant expansion of current extraction programmes and of refineries.

In Al Khals partners such as _Taiwan are highly valued as nationalist sentiment rises and slight xenophobia begins to build primarily against the west. While _Taiwan is just as foreign as any other nation, it is not widely perceived in quite the same light as many European-origin states. Qottar is keen to avoid upsetting the hard-line elements of his nation any more than need be.

Al Haqiqa Al Khals- UN still out; President vindicated says PM

With the United Nations persisting in its slander of the Democratic Republic and its beloved President, Omar Qottar, Prime Minister Habib Kilany spoke for all Al Khalis today when he appeared at an AKKR rally in In'Salah.

"Despite the problems our economy has faced in dealing with corrupt businessmen and the ever increasing need for security against a hostile and unwelcoming world" The PM started."Al Khals Kadira Republic provides the Al Khali people with the 6th finest public healthcare service in all of Asia. Does this sound like the work of a psychotic man? Next we shall face sanctions for building too many schools!"

Kilany's words were met with a chorus of cheers and cries of support for the government, as well as defiant chants against the United Nations and other sources of corruption threatening the republic today.
