Overview
The Sanctus Imperium of Tranquillitis is a country full of life. Located in a Nordic climate, on the eastern shores of the Arda Alliance, Tranquillitis is a country that holds an abundance of Nordic beauty, combining lush greenery with a veritable winter wonderland. The people, devout members of the Catholic Church, are friendly, and safe under protection of the Mother Confessor, Empress Monique de la Croix, and the Church of Tranquillitis.

Background
(OOC: The beginnings of Tranquillitis are a work in progress, and can be found here: http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87935&highlight=)

Tranquillitis began as a nation of devout Christians fleeing from war and religious persecution in their native country of Sweden. After the Danish Invasion in 1520, which ended in Swedish independence, Swedish Riksföreståndare Gustav I Vasa declared the new nation of Sweden to be officially Lutheran. Under the leadership of Bishop Erik Magnusson, and a French church official, Cardinal Montpelier, a small number of Catholics fled Sweden to an uninhabited land to the east. They started the town of Eriksberg, and soon a number of settlements, including Karlsgården, Östköping, and Gustavsborg, now three of the largest and most important cities in the country, were begun, and quickly grew. The city-states united under one flag, taking the Latin name "Tranquillitis", meaning Tranquillity. It is because of this exile of Swedish Catholics to the nation that the country is so devoutly protective of its religion today.

Bishop Erik became Emperor Erik I, and was permitted to marry due to a need for a recognized line of Emperors. He married the daughter of a prominent French nobleman, and the line still continues today, with Monique being the most current descendent of the Magnusson line.

Government

The government is effectively a constitutional monarchy. The Empress is the highest authority, and is no mere figurehead. She has the final say on all matters, and her word is law. Her advisor is Lord Daniel NILSSON. He is not an official member of the government, but acts as the Empress' representative in important matters. He also is the chief commander of the Imperial Tranquil Defence Force. The current Prime Minister is Anna WILHELMSSON. Prime Minister elections are held every 5 years, along with local and provincial representatives.

People & Country

The people of Tranquillitis are a friendly, devout group of people, who are loyal to both God and the Empress. While mainly a population of Nordic descent (96.3% of Tranquillitis citizens can claim Swedish ancestry), there is a minority who are of a mixed Nordic-French background, a group who are fully French, and those who are from other backgrounds who have immigrated to the nation because of religious reasons. A large group of these foreign backgrounds are of Italian or Spanish origin.

The architecture of the buildings in the city are a diverse mix of many different influences. The older buildings are mainly Gothic, with Nordic influences, while many of the newer buildings are very modern, quite similar to many of the buildings in any other modern city.

Physical Environment

The land of Tranquillitis is quite diverse. In the north, the mountains create beautiful mountain lakes, and breathtaking views of the country side. The interior of the land is quite hilly, with green grass and great forested regions. The interior is also rich in uranium, and other valuable natural resources, such as oil, natural gas, zinc, nickel, and scattered deposits of gold and silver. The town of Diamantsgard is at the location of the only known diamond mine in the country.

The eastern coast, specifically around the town of Östköping, is a series of small islands. The city is spread out over 7 smaller islets.

There are three major rivers in Tranquillitis, and many other minor rivers. The largest of the major rivers, the Frusen River, runs through the capital of Eriksberg, and passes by Erikshuset, the palace of the Empress. It runs southeast, emptying into the ocean on the eastern coast, and beginning in the mountainous north.

The second of the major rivers is the Solaire River, running to the east of Karlsgården. It runs from the north to the south, continuing into the lands past the Tranquillitis border. It also originates in the mountains in the North. The third of the three major rivers in Tranquillitis is the Altaren River, running west to east through Gustavsborg, in the south of Tranquillitis.
