OOC: As some of you know, I've never been a fan of small projects. To celebrate my return to Nationstates, I'm going to do the biggest and most elaborate factbook ever seen! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Unless it's about the bizarre similarities between my characters and certain movie stars and/or RL political figures. Game characters are as well. When I can, I will place full credit for an image.

On an unrelated note, if anyone knows a free software place I could get ahold of either a trial or full version of photoshop, I would be eternally grateful.

A Technically, 100% of all Roanian corporations are completely controlled by the government, if you include the various petty nobles, minor lords, small businessmen, etc. as part of the government.

Roanian Democracy, such as it is, consists of four seperate organisations. The House of Nobles, the House of Burghers, the Council of Viziers, and the Prince.

Now, did you see the word 'commoners' listed anywhere? Peasants? Villiens? Commons? No? Exactly. The Viziers are selected by the Prince from where ever he chooses. Generally it's from one of the houses or the all powerful military (The Councillor for Military and the Armed Forces is always a Lord Captain Commander, for instance. The Councillor for Foriegn Affairs is a Derricksmen, because of Alexander's cruel sense of humor and basically sadistic nature.) Alysanndra Ellestrea was selected by a vote from the following people.

* The Nobles
* Everyone on the island without a noble title who was, at the time, worth 1 million dollars. (Actually a surprisingly large percentage of the population, and they all got their on their own recognisances, lotteries being non-existent in Roania)
* The upper echelons of the Church Heirarchy within Roania. (Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, Abbots.)
*A small, almost random selection from the other religious groups. (Rabbis, Mullahs, Buddhist Monks, etc.)
* The Prince's whim
* The Lord Captain Commanders, the Grand Admirals, and the heads of each city-state's Special Forces.

The closest the common people have to a voice is the council of burghers. Now, everything the nobles don't own, the burghers own. Everything the burghers don't own, but the nobles don't want, is owned by the Church or the military (Orphanages, etc).

And the entire island, and everything on the island, is the exclusive property of one Prince Alexander Tyral Black, #1 Royal Square, Stronghold of Roan. Solicitors will be fed to the pirahnas.

And before anyone asks, the only type of schools in existence in Roania are state schools.

Roanian City States

Roan

The city state of Roan has been the most powerful since unification in 1975. Its central point is the Stronghold of Roan, a massive city rising out of the Roanian plains. The architecture is a mix of Russian and German styles, with mixtures of native Polynesian thrown in seemingly at random. Roan and the other cities are almost entirely homogenous. A foriegner could spend years in Roan and not see anyone who hadn't been born in the city-state or the islands.

The Roanians themselves are almost uniformly uninterested in the outside world. There are few diplomats chosen from their ranks, and even fewer career soldiers. They care only for what the outside can do for them.

Besides the capital, other population centres include Tanaqin (Tan-ah-kin), Rocheten and Tesva. The closer to Roan and the Aguan border you go, the more obvious the Russian influence becomes, until finally you reach the Palace, which is a near exact replica of the Kremlin in Moskow. Though with larger wine cellars and a more opulent interior, of course.

Speaking of wine, Roanians are amongst some of the most dedicated wine drinkers on Earth. They import beer to use as pig swill. All beer, from the nicest Holy Latin Empire beer to Resi Beer. Anything that you do with alcohol besides putting it in wine will seem like a waste to them.

A word of warning, though. While Roanians may drink lots of wine, it's uniformly weak. A man would have to drink gallons of the local stuff to become tipsy. The stronger wines, from Altara (Northern and eastern New Rohan) or Menelmacar are reserved for the nation's few holidays.

The Roanians are very, very, very class-conscious. An Earl would no more dine with a Squire then a commoner, and a Squire would sooner see a burgher across the table from him than a mere 'laborer'. This is taken to absurds in various parts of Roan, though the even more blatant toadying and kowtowing of Agua, and the malice-inspired terror of Derricks are mercifully unknown here.

Of course, the free will and equality of Altara is also unknown. Roanians speak of the Altarans the way, in the twentieth century, the French viewed everyone else on the planet. Though the Roanians, to their credit, love everyone who isn't Roanian equally. An Aguan, someone from Crimmond, all the same.

To most Roanians, they're all scum.

Agua

Agua is the south-western region of the country. The people there are jovial, with a passion for life that generally amuses their more dour neighbors.

The Holy Roanian Inquisition is based in Port Agua, the city-state's capital. His Eminence, Cardinal Richelieu, also makes his home there. The Aguans themselves are fairly devout, and many members of the HRI or Priesthood are from Agua.

Other major cities include: Drestow, Hazeringrad and Telinski. Port Agua is Roania's only international city.

Derricks

The people of Derricks, (collectively known as Derricksmen), are tall, Germanic, and fairly dumb people. The chattel of the villages exist for no reason than to serve their noble masters, at least so the nobles claim.

Because Derricks is in the mountainous regions of central Roania, it is a haunt for rare and exotic creatures such as the Roanian Firebird, the SnowEagle, and of course the Direwolf. As such, no one wants to go visit the villages to find out how the people are treated.

One suspects, however, that the nobles themselves are too busy huddling in their massive stone/timber palisades, by the fireplace, to really go about and act nastily to people.

The Derricksmen provide the Principality Legions with guerilla support, and occasionally will go to the battlefield with tame Direwolf packs.

Major population centers are Fort Derricks and Austenburg.

Altara

As I said, the northern and eastern sections of the Principality are called Altara. This is a land of contrast. The eastern sections of Altara are mostly jungle, and home to the native Polynesians. The north is agriculture, and the immense spire of Mt. Wolf.

Northern Altara is ruled by a Burgomeister, who the local squires elect from amongst themselves. East Altara is ruled by a "Chief of Chiefs".

The Altarans are generally looked down upon by the other islanders as both crude and unworthy of civilisation. The exception is Alaitoc, where the majority of Roania's elven population dwells. Alaitoc also serves as the capitol for the north.

Major population centers include Kamehama, Jungleton, Alaitoc and Teltara. (Major is relative, as Alaitoc is the only Altaran community with a population over 1 million)
