A four-way warship? Wierd, but a good idea!

The Sabre class Xanthalian warship has been the most versitile tactical vessel in the Xanthalian fleet since the class was commissioned one hundred and twenty years ago. Capable of combat from both atmospheric and space flight an, to a limited extent, the ground; it has proven itself as a highly effective weapon. Now, a new project has been proposed that would add to that functionality. With moderate modification, the Sabre class can be modified to operate on and below water. The new proposal before the Ministry of the Armada and Military, if passed, would provide the necessary modifications to all Sabre class vessels in the fleet, making them capable of fighting from any platform, planetary or space. The cost would be minimal, about two million dollars a ship, and the process would take about three years to apply across the board.

Bad idea.

Reason: The more diverse in fuctionality a ship is, the less effective it is in each function.

Better to create ships made for each theater of war, all spaceworthy, but specialized for their use in war as a space, sea, land or airship.

Agreed. It'd be the jack of all trades, but a master of none.

you dismiss this too quickly, whilst it probably wouldnt make a very good battleship, it could become an excellent scout.

On the contrary, the ship is optimized for space combat. All other functions are secondary. It uses the GMS and propulsion it has anyway to maneuver in the atmosphere, and landing gear allows it to plant itself on solid ground. All that is needed for function in water is seals on open hatches, a navigation and tactical system upgrade, and slightly modified torpedos. The potential is there, it is simply a matter of bringing it out.

Xanthal, submersible vessels are meant to be silent and lethal. Your new four-function vessel will serve neither purpose. In order for it to be silent and lethal, you'll need extensive modification to make it silent and greatly modified weaponry to be lethal...

It won't be silent, that's for sure. It will be just as lethal as any other sub, though. It's got some heavy firepower for a planetary weapon. OOCly you're probably right, but Xanthal loves function.

You know Xan......people are trying to tell you this is a bad idea but you're just not listening.

If you want to do a job right, you gotta use a the tool meant for the job. Sure, a butter knife is a multifunction tool - you can spread your marmelade, you can use it as a screwdriver, you could kill someone with it....in zero G even! But a butter knife blows when compared to using a screwdriver, or an uber cannon of mass destruction.

Specialization is key for success when it comes to doing a job perfect and right the first time around. Your "multi-function" ship is not.

Sketch: I'm listening OOC. You're right, too. IC the Xanthalian government will listen eventually, they just take their time about it. After all, submersibles are usually a Military responsibility, not an Armada one. Frankly, the modification will probably go through just so that it's easier for the Armada to fly in dimensions of liquid space. (They haven't figured out solids yet, but this could be useful.)
