Black Osmosis (New Chemical Weapon)

The doctors stood around the table, examining the computer read out. The specimens were all dead, with little external deformities. The only visible effect of the gas was the shrivled organs and wrinkled skin. The test patients' lungs had all collapsed, and the hearts shrivlled and destroyed. It was perfect.

"Think about the posibilities of this gas. We could wipe out entire military legions, entire forces with ease. Supersoldiers would be useless, nanocomponents inefective, geniticaly modified wariors would be no more than oversterioded punks."

"Yes, and think of the sale possibilities. Anti-elf nations would all but kill for the chemical. After all, they may be imune to disease, but not to the degeneration of their own cells."

The weapon had been designed for the assault on Deazeman. Several Imitoran citizens of Deazemani descent had been taken in, and tested, their blood drawn, and then sent off to the safety camps. However, the war had ended before reaserch could even start. Now, the scientists from the Chemical Weapons Facilities in IMI had developed the weapons further, and the chemical was effective against all types of organisms. Blood had been taken off file from the Elf executions back in the early days, and the chemical further modified. And now it was perfect. Perfect for anouncementp

The scientist stood in front of the throng of reporters, doctors, and military analysts. News organizations from around the world were present, waiting to hear the news.

He cleared his throat, and the group quieted. When they were totally silent, he spoke.

"Ladies and gentlemen, first I welcome you to this confrence. This is a monumental leap for the CWF of IMI. And infact, a step towards the future of our devision. However, I will lead you on and tease you no more. I'm sure you all are wondering what I have called you here for. Allow me to explain."

The lights in the room dimmed, and a screen descended from the wall. On it was the video of a small blood cell floating through the blood stream. It was an actual video, filmed by a nanosized cammera.

"This is your standard red blood cell. Nothing special about it at all. Blood cells, like all cells, use osmosis in order to keep an isotonic level with the water around it. Now, if the amount of nutrients in the water surounding the cell is higher than the amount in the cell, or vice versa, the cell goes through osmosis in order to reinstate the isotonic enviroment."

He then clicked another button, and then the cell grew larger on the screen, magnified by the cammera. "If the cell is unable to maintain osmosis, it may suffer plasmolisis or lysis, which signals the end of the cell. In an hypertonic enviroment, the cell loses water in order to dilute the solute rich enviroment around the cell. If it is unable to stop, it goes through plasmalosis, collapsing in on itself."

The video showed the cell shrink, slowly at first, and after three seconds, it seemed to 'pop' out of existance.

"In a hypotonic enviroment, the cell continues to take on water in order to balance the enviroment. If this happens to fast, or the cell is unable to stop the influx of water, the cell explodes."

The video showed another red blood cell expand until it was far to large to be contained in its cell membrane, and then 'poped' out of existance.

"Now that we have completed our little biology lesson, on to the news. I and my colleauges have been researching a weapon that will beat all forms of defense. Something that would render geneticly modified warriors no differnt from any other person. A weapon that could kill human, elf, orc, and any other lifeform with ease. Something that would get past nanoupgrades, something that would proove effective against any enemy. Somethign that would go after the most basic life form: the cell."

He clicked the button again, and a video of another cell, this one a brain cell, popped on the screen. Suddenly, the fluid around the cell turned almost blue, then less than a second later, the cell exploded.

"We have developed a weapon that will target the cells indiscriminantly, be it brain, blood, or the like. The weapon, designated a chemical device, can be inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or through any other mucus membranes, will force every cell in the body of a living organism to either go through lysis or plasmalosis. As seen in the video, within seconds, the target organism is dead. Every cell in its body dies off, either shrivlled up or expanded beyond capacitiy. Depending on the organism, visible effects can vary from shrivvled skin and internal organs to the full liquification of the target organism's internal organs."

When the video had played a second time, showing the spread of the chemical through the body, the scientist stopped the movement on screen, turned the lights back on, and took a sip of water. "Are there any questions?"

OOC: Feel free to play a reporter or what not.

OOC: LOL, yeah it is a damn good class, although for different reasons I'm sure ;) *gets out advanced biology books* :P Hmmmm....

(darn my non-destructive schedule! How am I going to make weapon out of German Cultural History from 1815 to 1918?!

Oh, and tag :P)

(Yeah, who'd the Germans ever manage to kill during that time-frame? *continues researching the maintenance of a communist state by being unemployed and drunk as much as possible*
I want to throw an Iskra! reporter in there but a)I'm not sure what on earth s/he'd ask, and b)it'd probably just lead to an international incident ;) )

Veers raised his voice to ask a question.. "In other words, you have created another WMD capable of whiping out the entire galaxy? And wouldnt it infact just make goverments spend more billions on Battle Suits?"

(No worries, I think I can come up with enough for both of us :P)

"That of course, is one way to look at it. Or you could see it as the end to war. Mutually Assured Destruction is a perfectly acceptable alternative for us."

"Well, as you probably expected. Danneland is repulsed by the faqt that another WMD has come into the hands of men. It is not the end of all wars, one thought that when the Nuclearweapon was invented, that would be the end of all wars. And what do we have? we have more wars than ever. We would advice that no one buys this weapon, and that it is burried deep beneath the ground"

(Well, point, but they did do it the boring, old fashioned way..without lung eating gas stuff. ;))

"And you are welcome to that opinion. However, we feel the opposite, and plan to continue research. Any other questions?"

"It was a mixture of purpose and accident. The idea of the weapon itself came from an accident, when a local specie of fish introduced to salt water began expieriencing plasmalosis. The idea to turn it into a weapon of course was not far behind, and we began examining cell structure in order to find a possible reactant that would cause this breakdown."

"But in a human being, which is made up of mostly water in cells already, where will the cells get the additional water to rupture? Would the chemical work in a vapor solution, providing the additional water needed to cause the necessary reaction (*wink wink* How about a discount :P)? And how is it capable of causing plasmolisis or lysis? Wouldn't they cancel each other out?"
Imitora

"The cells will not require any additional water to rupture. The chemical directly affects the cell, convinving the cell, so to say, that the cell requires to expell or take in water. I was simplifing the explanation saying it causes plasmalosis and lysis, when in fact, it forces the cell to go through the process of expelling or taking on water in to great a quantity. It forces the cell to do either or, never both. It varries from cell to cell. We have seen a patern that brain cells seem to...commit...so to say, plasmalosis more often than blood cells, which seem to result in lysis more. Tissue cells seem to follow the patern of the brain cell."

OOC: Yeah, that was a very slick move Imi. ;) Biological weapons can take time to act, chemical are more to the point.
