I was watching the 1982 version of The Thing, and the idea of a bunch of guys stuck in an entirely isolated arctic research station made me do a little thinking of how I could put it to an RP.

For those of you unfamiliar, in The Thing, the people in the research base stumble upon an alien organism that can shapeshift and take on the exact characteristics of what it came into contact with.

Here's my idea: this RP takes place about 20 years after the movie. An ASW research base loses all contact with the outside world, and so the government of my nation dispatches a rescue team to the base. The base is overrun, and there are a select few number of survivors (some aliens, some not. We can decide that later) and turn this into an escape RP. For those of you who choose to be things, don't reveal it. If you are a 'thing' and get rescued to the ASW mainland we can continue the RP from within ASW.

Any takers? We can always incorporate more.

I didn't mean I made survival horror...I meant I started in on NS...or at least intoduced it to the general RL population.

And unfortunately, it is an ongoing process...and I'm in a civil war because of things that happened in the RP and others. So unfortunately, I cannot join at this time, but I wish you the best of luck.

Very. By the end of the movie, all but two characters have been killed off, and neither of them is sure whether or not the other one is actually a Thing.

Sounds interesting, although I am not familiar with the movie, so I do not know what the whole thing will entail.

if there was a remake of it not to long ago I think I may of seen it, not sure though

OOC: The Thing is one of the all-time classics. The ultimate survival creature - even better than that Alien creature IMHO. Would like to join but a bit involved with a couple other RPs. Good luck.

Alright, I'll explain The Thing in depth for all of you. In Antarctica, a couple some-odd thousand years ago (following movie plot) a flying saucer crashed into Earth. The alien inside crawls out, and gets frozen "to death", but is, in truth, kind of "hibernating".

Some Norwegians bring this thing back to their camp, and it thaws out. It goes on a killing spree, assimilating people. The way it assimilates people is, when it is in close proximity and alone with the victim, it attacks them, absorbing their genetic coding. In a matter of minutes, it copies the person/lifeform completely. It acts, talks, and looks like them. A perfect copy.

Now, in the movie, a dog from the Norwegian camp is assimilated, and it runs off. The Norwegians follow it, trying to kill it, but in the end, get killed themselves, and the dog lives, now stuck in a base of Americans, or something like that. It proliferates by assimilating individual victims, until the abovementioned 2 characters are left.

What we're going to be working off of in this RP is that they failed to completely destroy the thing. Down in Antarctica, my nation has a research base, and by chance, the thing manages to get their. A short while after, and all communications with the base are cut off in dead summer when radio transmissions are near 100% possible. This sends up red flags for the government, and they send in above rescue team to track down the people in Antarctica and deal with the things.

How we're going to do it is this: if you choose to roleplay as a thing, you may only attack other players if you're alone in a room with them. If you get discovered, your character if f*cked, and you can expect to get incinerated. And people, no stupid moves. Act like you never knew they were a thing when you read a post with an open attack on another player.

IF YOU GET ASSIMILATED, DON'T QUIT THE RP. CONTINUE ON AS A THING. IF YOU'RE A THING AND GET BURNED, THEN YOU'RE OUT. IF YOU'RE A HUMAN, AND ARE KILLED OUT OF SUSPICION, YOU'RE OUT. SIMPLE AS THAT.

A little information on the thing: every cell of it is alive, and it only needs to get contact with the victim once before they will be copied into a thing. The only real way to kill one is with fire, because it can destroy every cell effectively. Thus said, fire tools will be in short supply. But relax, for sake of the roleplaying, I'll have a couple sets of flamethrowers lying around the base, and the rescue team can have incendiary grenades and 40 mm incendiary rounds. I might have a few blow-torches, shotguns, and stuff, so everyone can have a weapon. I'll give a bit more detail about the terrain we'll be working with later.

More info: Another part of info about the thing is that in the movie, there is a blood test scene, where people burn bits of their blood to find out who is human and who is not. Thing blood will always attempt to run away from fire. If you're a thing, and get your blood poked with an open match, then it would be advisable for you to try and kill the players or run away.

Is that sufficient back story and explanation of how this works? Questions? Comments?

Starts on Thursday. I'll make the thread, and have it an open one. I'm going to keep myself out of anything major, though, until Monday. I have to head to my dad's house for the weekend, and he doesn't have internet.

BTW: More people sign up for the rescue team. We should have at least 5, because it would be easier to have an Open RP with slots open for the researchers than an unknown team member appearing out of thin-air all the way from ASW.

BUMP - Amerigo signed up as a spy working for his government investigating what happened. He's thinking up a reason as to why his nation would be interested.
