OOC: I'm open to all sorts of opinions on how i can improve the design of the ship. And i'm trying to use advanced tank armor technology on a ship.

OOC One thought, I have seen other similar designs here but in reality you will be hard pressed to find room for the helicopters. You save some space by eliminating the stacks due to the nuclear power plant and your would get some space due to automation. You can't raise the main turrets much because of the weight and for the guns to be accurate you need stability. everything else will fit fine. The price is about right for here but probably should be bumped up due to the cost of producing the armored steel that thick. I've ridden the USS IOWA in the Caribean and it rode like a limo.

IC I would be interested in purchasing one in the future should you decide to produce them for export. Will they fit through the Welland canal?

I'm not sure about exporting yet.

Oh and about the Canal, i'm not totally sure, but i would hope so, because if HO and Edenstein remake the canal smaller than it was, these ships won't fit. The beam is too wide, but if they want to be able to fit carriers through that canal they'll need to widen it, i believe the Nimitz's Beam is 20 feet wider than what i listed here

P.S. Were you in the Navy?

Oh and I thought that the Iowa had Hangar space because back when it first was built it carried Sea Planes for Spotting missions.

Maybe cut back the choppers by 2ish?
and add about lets say 450 million to the price?

oh and just FYI i'm loosely basing this off of the Cancelled Montana class from WWII.

may Export depending on Interest.

I'm going to make two points
First, have you read the post by Smoke Jaguar on ship displacement and armor, it is very good.

Second, this ship needs more anti-air than it has and an increase in radar detection. You need some sea-air missle systems.

Then we might talk about your armor designs (Clarca has some of the better thought out materials)

Then maybe we could talk export contracts...

the SM-2 missiles can fit into VLC and those are SAM's
the Radar Suite is the Exact Same Radar setup of the Arleighe Burke Destroyers.

I've read the post about displacement.

And i ganked the stats for the Displacement, Length and Beam from the Montana Class Battleship, and i added more displacement for good measure. The Montana had the same number of Big guns though.

I did ask CSJ to look at it, i don't know if he has though.

And i'm stumbling around in the dark on the armor. I'm just trying to incorporate some new technology.

The design looks pretty good, and I see few real problems. The only thing I would note is that it should be a little more expensive. I would estimate the ship, without electronics, to be in the range of $1.5-2 billion (more expensive than a Montana would be due to the modern armor). Add a few hundred million for nuclear reactors and associated equipment, a few hundred more for modern electronics, and then at least $200 million for an AEGIS or comparable system, and I'd say that it should probably be in the range of $3-4 billion

A few other notes:
1) A much better CIWS would be the 35mm Oerlikon Millenium Gun. It's both more powerful and with better fire control compared to the Phalanx. You should also add a few launchers for the RIM-116 RAM, which can either complement or outright replace guns. The RAM has over 5 times the effective intercept range of the gun systems, and is capable of intercepting pretty much any missile out there. It's carried in 21-round launchers.

2) The deck armor's a bit thin. You might want a bit more to protect against bombs and diving missiles.

3) If this is a new-design modern ship, you could cut the crew by a bit with automation. There's no reason to have nearly 2000 crew members. 1500-1600 should be sufficient. You can always say it has extra space for additional crew/flag staff/transients of course. A modernized Iowa for example, still has facilities for about 1000 additional personnel beyond the necessary crew.

MadderMike:
Actually, many WWII battleships did have hangar facilities for small reconnaissance seaplanes, with catapults to launch them. That space can easily be used for helicopters and UAVs instead (the Iowas carry an SH-2 Seasprite helicopter and 1-3 Pioneer UAVs, and they had a comparatively light seaplane load). Also, if this is a new design, he's not restricted to the aircraft storage of WWII ships. He can always design it to carry more.

Good stuff. I only have one thing to say (and its kinda off topic), you should delete an old bump before making a new one, that way you won't have a bunch of bumps in a row.
