Military Force: The High Guard of the Commonwealth (comprising Lancer Ground Forces and the Argosy Space Navy)

THE ARGOSY:

The space-based branch of the Commonwealth of TA High Guard. Starship-based High Guard personnel are referred to as Argos. The rank structure of the Argosy follows the old Earth naval standards set down hundreds of years ago.

During multiple platform operations, A.I.'s "negotiate" combat responsibilities based on established doctrine, rules of engagement and their commanders' intent. An A.I. posseses full rights just like any other citizen of the Commonwealth of TA.

The all-purpose term for High Guard ground troops. Lancers typically form the spearhead of any Commonwealth of TA ground action. The rank structure follows that of old Earth army standards set down hundreds of years ago.

High Guard Sidearm - The Force Lance

A primary tool and weapon of every High Guardsman, the Force-Lance looks like a harmless metallic tube approximately 1/3 meter in length. But when deployed for battle, it can be extended into a quarterstaff almost two meters long, and when used in melee, the Force-Lance can be charged with an electrical current, shocking anyone it hits into unconsciousness. But the Force-Lance is more than just a melee weapon. It can also fire a plasma beam, in both the extended and retracted position, which can be used in ranged combat, or as a cutting tool or light source. Finally, the F-Lance can launch a number of self-guided effectors which also have the ability to intercept artillery shells and projectiles.

COMMONWEALTH FTL TECHNOLOGY - SLIPSTREAM

Since its discovery nearly 500 years ago by Commonwealth physicist Rochinda, the slipstream has connected the galaxies together. Slipstream is an extension of our reality, an additional dimension that's integrally intertwined with our own. The slipstream is a place where quantum connections are visible as cords, especially the large and strong connections like those between huge concentrations of matter such as planets or suns. A spaceship that enters the slipstream can harness the energy of these cords and ride them from one star system to another.

Luckily for the cause of interstellar commerce and communication, the more a certain path is frequently traveled, the faster, easier and more predictable the journey becomes. As a result, frequently-traveled routes between major Commonwealth worlds -- Caldoria to Valhalla, for example -- are safe and convenient.

Another unusual aspect of slipstream is the requirement of an organic pilot to guide a starship through the slipstream. At an intersection of pathways in slipstream space, both paths manifest the potentiality of being correct and incorrect. It's only when the pilot chooses a specific direction that this potentiality collapses and one path becomes right, and the other wrong. For reasons still not completely understood, organic beings tend to choose the correct paths, or more precisely, the very act of choosing makes the path they have chosen the correct one.

But strangely, computers -- even ones with artificial intelligence -- are incapable of this reality-altering guesswork. Even the most sophisticated starship in the Systems Commonwealth requires an organic sentient to pilot through the starlanes -- a prospect some sentients regard as deeply disturbing but others find comforting.

LANCER BATTLE ARMOUR:

LANCER UNITS

There are 5 Main Lancer Divisons (a 6th may exist) in the fielded by the Commonwealth of TA and they are typically deployed Planetside in times of peace, but deployed onto Argosy Glorious Heritage Crusiers and Victory's Crucible Dropship Carriers in times of conflict. The units are as follows:

1st Commonwealth Infantry Divison:

The 1st CID is the Commonwalth of TA's main regular fighting force. It controls and co-ordinates the operations of the four Brigade Groups deployed under it. It's own forces include an armoured reconnaissance regiment, as well as artillery, air defence, engineering and logistics assets.

3rd Commonwealth Armoured Brigade Group:

The 3rd CABG is the heaviest aspect of the Commonwealth's ground fighting force. It is armed with close to 500 Diablo AI-Controlled Planetary Warfare Bots as the main fighting aspect of the group. The brigade has one armoured regiment and two infantry battalions as support. In addition a regiment of dropships modified as gunships support the brigade group. The brigade is noticeable for its heavy engineer and air defence complement.

5th Commonwealth Mechanised Brigade Group

5th CMBG is a force similar to 3rd CABG, except it is more lightly equipped. It has only 250 Diablo PWB's compaired to 3rd CABG's 500. The infantry units compose a larger part of this CMBG, so this unit is compromise between the 1st CID's mobility and the 3rd CABG's immense firepower.

7th Commonwealth Mechanised Brigade Group

7th CMBG's force structure is essentially a duplicate of the 5th CMBG, formed as a response to calls that the Commonwealths ground forces did not pack enough punch, did not have enough mobility, and were spread too thinly.

9th Commonwealth Peacekeeping Command

The 9th CPC is a lightly armed contingent of infantry troops tasked with policing captured installations or border worlds on the front lines of conflict, and they are often used to shore up policing services. Although they are lightly armed, they are the most mobile of any of the 5 Divisons and can be send anywhere in the Commonwealth on a moments notice.

The Knights of Infinity (The 6th Division)

The Knights of Infinity is an unofficial term applied to a group of Commonwealth special forces troops whose mission is to rapidly interveine in situations with threaten Commonwealth security quietly and without the knowledge of the general populace. The Government will neither acknoledge or deny the existance of the Knights of Infinity.

PWB Planetary Warfare Bots - Diablo Class
The Diablo PWB's are one of the most fearsome ground-based military units fielded by the Commonwealth. They stand at an impressive 45 meters in height with their legs fully extended, 35 meters at combat posture. They are armed with two high velocity magnetically accellerated miniguns which can fire Penetrating or High Explosive rounds. They are equipped with a Radiating Counter Measure generator to defeat any guided missile system that attempts to gain a lock-on, so any missiles attacks on the Diablo Class must either be guided visually or dumbfired. DSC Dropship Carriers can carry 20 Diablos, while Glorious Heritage Class Heavy Cruisers carry two Diablo's at all times, though if dispatched with a Planetfall Readiness Group, it can carry up to ten Diablo's in modified storage bays. Diablo's are unmanned, relying on advanced AI programs to accomplish objectives.

XMC Heavy Crusier - Glorious Heritage Class:

Capable of high-endurance, independent operations, the Heavy Cruiser nonetheless operates most often as the central component of an HCBG. They are ideally suited for interplanetary combat, although they can play a significant role in planetary strike operations and logistics support for the HCBG as a whole. In addition, XMCs are often called upon to perform disaster relief and refugee support operations due to their spacious interiors and ability to ferry large quantities of emergency supplies and additional personnel. They are also the preferred platform for first contact missions, given their formidable combat capabilities and their ability to operate without a battlegroup. The flagship of the fleet, The Long Ascention, is a Glorious Heritage Class Cruiser. The XMC fleet also recieved a Cold Plasma Armour and Reactive Shielding upgrade.

EDSA - Experimental Deep Space Attack Ship - Flaming Sword Class

Using experimental AP Cannon and AG mass packet technology, the EDSA is most likely the most dangerous and destructive ship in the fleet of the Commonwealth. They are quite large for a DSA, rivialing the size of the Glorious Heritage Class Heavy Cruisers. Their size is nescessary due to the advanced Anti-Proton core which is necessary for the experimental AP cannons. The EDSA's advantage over typical ships is that it can fire its missiles, which carry AG mass packets, at long range. The mass packets attach to a ships hull and through the use of AG fields, add mass to a ship rendering it unable to manuver or escape. The EDSA then moves in and "torches" the ship with its battery of 24 AP cannons. The ships defences also include Cold Plasma Armour and Reactive Shielding.

DSA Deep Space Attack Ship - Righteous Fist of Heaven Class:

Designed to operate with a minimum of crew and without fleet support behind enemy lines for extended periods of time. The DSA is the most heavily armed starship launched by the Commonwealth, and her arsenal includes the latest in extreme-range kill vehicles as well as the usual suite of offensive and defensive missiles, AP guns, and PDLs. Additionally, the new DSA's distinctive, knife-like profile gives her a tiny sensor cross-section, making her nearly impossible for foes to detect. And any enemy who does manage to engage her will find that reactive shielding and cold plasma armor make the DSA exceptionally resilient and damage-resistant, while her lack of entry points (access to the ship is through a single, heavily fortified airlock) leaves the ship nearly invulnerable to boarding raids.

GDF Group Defense Frigate - Pride of Kaldera Class

The Pride of Kaldera class Group Defense Frigate is the first line of defense for the HCBG. Designed to track, target and destroy incoming enemy missiles and fighters, the battlegroup relies on the GDF commanders to ensure that the battlespace is clear for maneuver and attack operations. Each vessel is armed with limited offensive capabilities, but these capabilities are rarely used except in cases where the battlegroup has suffered significant casualties or the threat of hostile interdiction is low. Although rarely deployed independently of a HCBG, large ad hoc networks of detached GDFs can be used as planetary defense assets in the unlikely event of invasion by hostile forces or massive missile attack. The ship is equiped with reactive shielding

DSC Dropship Carrier - Victory's Crucible Class

The Victory's Crucible class Drop Ship Carrier is the primary strategic lift platform for the Lancer Corps. Each DSC serves as "home away from home" for a light regiment of troops plus their transport ships and equipment. Aside from their combat role in supporting planetfall warfare operations, these assets form the backbone of the High Guard's disaster relief and humanitarian assistance capability. With its large number of highly motivated soldiers, the DSC is uniquely qualified to provide manpower support for the distribution of goods and services. In addition, each asset can be quickly converted to provide strategic lift services for any HCBG element. The DSC also serves as the primary transport for Diablo Planetary Warfare Bots, carrying 20. The DSC is a departure from traditional Commonwealth design, the asthetics of the ship were sacrificed for maximum function and survivability. The DSC has the thickest hull armour of any Commonwealth ship, to allow it to survive direct hits from planet based and orbital defence systems.

LRS Long Range Surveillance Ship - To Seek, To Find Class:

The Long Range Surveillance ship provides the eyes and ears for an HCBG. Equipped with multiple arrays of high-powered active and passive sensor suites, the LRS is ideal for providing early-warning of impending attack, enhancing battlegroup track correlation and improving the efficiency of offensive and defensive operations. Although lightly armed, the LRS is equipped with Low Observability technology, which reduces its vulnerability to attack. In addition, the smaller mass of the LRS combined with an impressive AP power plant allows for rapid acceleration and maneuver away from high threat situations. The LRS can also be employed as an effective intergalactic exploration platform, since its ability to gather and process data has as much utility for scientific pursuits as combat operations.

AM9D Drop Ship - Ung Tae Class

A combination armored personnel carrier, hover-tank and skiff, the Ung Tae is the foundation upon which the Lancer Corps has built its reputation. These drop ships are the primary delivery vehicles for High Guard troops on the ground, capable of all-weather operations in up to 20 Gs. Each ship carries a platoon of Lancers and their basic combat gear, plus provisions for short-term accommodations as shelter. Though slow, Ung Tae can take a tremendous pounding due to multiple layers of ablative and reactive armor. In addition, each ship is equipped with a single direct fire AP gun turret and a deployable 150mm mass-driver cannon for indirect fire support at 1200 rounds per minute. Operating in concert, an entire division of AM9D's can coordinate mass-driver effects for simultaneous arrival on target with pinpoint accuracy.

RA-26 Shrike Strike Slipfighter

The Shrike is a fearsome high-speed attack craft used to support medium to long range anti-starship strike operations. Although not as maneuverable as a tactical fighter, the true advantage of the Shrike is its ability to put steel on target while avoiding retribution from hostile assets. It also provides the Group Operational Commander with the flexibility to hit the enemy from a number of angles at a tempo of his/her own choosing. The Shrike is equipped with a single AP cannon and 3 ELS tubes which can fire up to 6 PM-6 Star Arrow smart missiles. It can be controlled either from the cockpit or remotely. Also capable of atmospheric flight.

RF-42 Centaur tactical fighters

The Centaur is the premiere space superiority fighter in the Local Cluster. Designed to conduct high speed, fire-and-forget combat maneuvers, it is unmatched in its ability to engage multiple targets at short and medium distances. The primary mission of the Centaur is to provide combat patrol support for Heavy Cruiser and Dropship Carriers. It also flies tactical escort for strike fighters and conducts Suppression of Enemy Defense (SED) operations during interplanetary combat. These fighters are equipped with dual AP cannons and 2 ELS tubes which fire up to 6 OM-5 offensive and defensive kinetic kill missiles. The RF-42 can be piloted either from the cockpit or remotely from a Flight Operations Center.

COMMONWEALTH SPECIAL WEAPONS DIVISION

Voltarium Anti-Gravity Weapons (aka. Nova Bombs)

Few civilizations in the galaxy have weapons of mass destruction that can match the pure destructive force of a Nova Bomb of the Commonwealth. All High Guard ships of the line, specifically XMC Heavy Crusiers with a loadout of 40 Nova Weapons and DSAs with a loadout of 90 weapons, carry Nova Bombs. The weapons, when fired into a star or other large spacial body, cause a massive reversal and multiplication of gravitational fields, causing the destruction of the object, and in the case of Nova Bomb use on a star, the entire solar system.

Point Singularity Projectors (PSP's)

During the first days of the Commonwealth, the fledgling High Guard encountered a derelict vessel on the edge Commonwealth territory towards the galactic core. The vessel was severely damaged and most of the technology onboard was not much more advanced than Commonwealth technology was, except for the weapons system. The ship utilized a weapon which uses "mini-black holes" as projectiles. The projectiles are about the size of a pin-head, but have as much mass as a Earth-size planet. Test firings of the weapon show devastating effects on starships, and even planets.
