First tell us what your definition of "power" is. Military strength (and how is that defined? The most conquests? The largest military force?), economic might, political influence, population density, some combination of all of the above?

Somebody once posted a "Power" calculator that used a wide variety of factors to determine a nation's power ranking. A lot of people argued with the author since it had the appearance of a bias toward UN activity, and the thread eventually died out.

So tell us what you mean by "power".

I would tentaively place myself somewhere around 15th.......a nice, conservative estimate.

I may be as high as 7 or 8 but I'm definately not 1. There's at least a good half dozen space nations that could kick my ass in a fight. I won't bother factoring in modern nations, since that's a whole different wavelength.

I'm around 200-300, because of my low profile and distance from the main populated systems...

The people of our allied nation of The Holy Imperium if Evil Oranges may not measure up in numbers or technology but make up for it with their fantaic dedication.

Um, I was kinda joking around. I only have about 10 uber-huge ships, and they work more as command ships than combat ships. The rest of my ships are more realistic. Well, not realistic since they've all got FTL and laser weapons and gadgets that take up half a page with techno-babble

Hmm, I still haven't had the opportunity to reveal my fleet. But then I am a super stealth nation, so I guess there are some advantages to that.

Im just getting sick of this crap. People should look at things before they can judge.

Back at the subject at hand, I'd say I'm up there on the power scale, atleast in space. One of the largest countries, frightening econ with one of the highest per capita spending rates on defence, most of which has been poured into the High Navy(space), leaving my army small for my size and somewhat underfunded in many respects, tho my holdings are a maze of defencive fortifications, and most people belong to citizen militas, so it balances out for the most part(especially when trying to level the modern-future tech gap).

I mean, there are nations such as The Grendels, Praetor, Mallberta, Vegana, Western Might, Angelus, Pantera, etc...that are overlooked here. And who would really want to mess with The Evil Overlord? He'll beat you over the head with a physics book or a copy of "The Art of War" or something.

Without trying to define what is a "superpower", I'd say that any nation over a billion pop with a frightening economy (that has been sustained for quite some time) would give any rational person pause.

It also comes down to which nations don't ignore eachother. Most everyone has (or should) a list of nations that they keep track of.

ooc: hey now.. I read the Art of War too. And a lot of The Prince before I lost it. I tried reading On War by Baron von Clausewitz [sp?] but found it incredibly obtuse and nearly impossible to understand. I'd have to read a paragraph about 6 times for it to make any sense. It was nuts.

Excuse me, 1.8 billion, All-Consuming Economy(on the rise), Massive military spending, and if I do say so myself, not a bad RPer? Maybe not top 20, but perhaps an honorable mention? Larger than Diminix, larger than Reploid Productions even, just a few hundred million below Melkor, I think that's not bad, huh? By the way, I believe the list should consist of the RPing public, due to the fact that if they don't RP, their power pretty much means nothing. Some people I think should definitely be on the list:

I'm not the most powerful, pretty high up but not the most.

[OOC: These threads are utterly pointless. I could very easily make a case as to why "Steel Butterfly" and the "Steel-Orion Empire" is the strongest nation in NationStates.

My nation is very far future tech. No I do not use this as a GODMOD tactic, but as an RP oppertunity. Some of the things that exist could even be classified as Fantasy, especially some of my recent Genetic Experiments, as well as my ability to travel in an manipulate time.

But before you yell, scream, shout, etc., I must say that I do not RP wars for the above reasons. If I did not use every method that I could in a war, it would be unrealistic. If I did use every method, it would be GODMOD. In fact, I'm doing one now but it is and almost has/had to be a civil war, and at that it's mostly an Action/Plot Oriented RP, not a mindless readout of numbers and stats.

Also, without bragging or whatever, I am an above average RPer, and I'm not going to downplay my ability. I have been doing such for years before NS. Regardless of stats, tactics are what win a true war in NS, and by true war I don't mean a numbers fest that gets the people pissed off at each other and then WMD's start flying around until it all gets ignored. Tactics and creative situations to win, stem directly from OOC RL ability. A nation of 100 million could beat a nation of 1 billion, but no nation of 1 billion would be willing to admit loss on this site to a nation that small it seems.

And that my friends is why NS War has turned to shit. Perhaps 5% of all posters are capable of actually RPing a fair war, and if they happen to lose, admit it realistically without slinging WMDs and ignores around like ping pong balls. NS War is a "my dick is bigger than your's" arguement taken to a new level. Frankly, it is disgusting.]

Exactly. And what's more, in free-form roleplay not only can a very small nation win against a very large one, but the best writer wins outright. That is the concept of winning here, and not very many people that I've seen have grasped that.

Well, I bet I'm powerful... in RPing. I'm probably still getting used to the NS system with ignores and such, but I've been an RPing vet for several years at other games, and have been writing creatively since I can remember (5 years old?)

Other than that, I might rank somewhere in the (x)00's to (x)000's. I'm probably going to win the defensive war I am in at the moment and turn it into an offensive war against my attackers, hehe. SB, you've hit the nail on the head. That's why I focus on Co-Op Stories in NS, and if the stuff in them is unrealistic, there's no worry about godmod, because it's story driven and not being used AGAINST someone.

About NS war, since it was brought up...

No nation throws 2000 planes into the air over a battle, much less the 6000+ battles I've seen. No nation sends in 20 Fleets to do battle, or the 1-59245 Armored Divs. Even if they had them, no nation would send that many in, because of sheer logistics.

Being bigger does not equal victory, despite what is commonly proposed. If age and size were all that mattered, why is the USA (small, and YOUNG) dominant on the world scene?

Total War is not EVERY WAR. Seeing fights over 12 hostages turn into a nuke-fest (or whatever WMD is preferred) is stupid as hell. Same for wars of conquest that end in the territory getting vaped. NATIONS DON'T IMMOLATE BECAUSE THEY ARE LOOSING.

On the other hand, just because you can hurl huge lists of stats and data doesn't make you win. Please, make us care with an actual story, not just dull data.

I could have said it better myself. That is where all my tech stems from. I don't have threads saying "Hey...look what I invented!", instead I use whatever means necessary to make an entertaining story. Also, you are quite right on NS war.

Our founder is gonna hopefully work on some battle engine for the NM, it'll certainly be intresting if it can work.

I could be considered powerful in terms of military size (though certainly not top 20), but since I have no RP skills, I wouldn't really consider my nation to be that powerful.

Seriously, several months ago I wouldn't have wanted to go to war with AMF, just because of his reputation (and now we're of different RP groups).

Well then, in that case.............I guess I wouldn't even register. I base my assumptions of power mainly upon the game mechanics (ie, UN rankings), and then take into account how people RP. Not much point in acknowledging someone whose uber in every which way when they can't even maintain a steady economy.

ooc: hey now.. I read the Art of War too. And a lot of The Prince before I lost it. I tried reading On War by Baron von Clausewitz [sp?] but found it incredibly obtuse and nearly impossible to understand. I'd have to read a paragraph about 6 times for it to make any sense. It was nuts.

OOC: It's funny, I'm doing my thesis about the application of the postulates of the War by Von Clausewitz and Sun Tzu's Art of War within the current politics in the Latin American countries.

Now, for me they are, based in raw power and RP skills, taking into account that I'm almost a n00b dirt bag compared to most people here:
