The old, battered and rusty Staff Car drove hazardly across the hard desert sand towards what appeared to be a well defended fort in terms of the impressive outer walls. But as General Vimes soon discovered they were nothing but cardbord cut outs supported on a wooden frame.
As the old vehicle shuddered to a halt, a rather scuffy saregant ran up. Vimes addressed the sargeant with, "Ah, Bates I presume?"
"Yes sur, that I am indeed."
"Good, just one thing Bates."
"Whuts that sur?"
"About those outer walls......."
"Budget cuts I'm afaird ta say sur."
"Ah.....I see. I suppose it also explains the general lack of maintance and there only being one bicycle stationed here?"
"That it does sur."
"I guess those impressive thanks I saw are also just cardboard cut outs?"
"Spot on sur, they're.......er.........ta scare off the local native tribe sur."
"Has it worked?"
"Yes, so far it has sur. Haven't seen a single one of 'em scumbags since I've been 'ere sur."
