Following the success of the First International Film Awards (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=72781) in Celdonia, where the Iansisle film The Hunter's Hunter was named best film (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=74147), Hector Forsythe, President of the Celdonian Academy of Film Excellence (CAFE) has announced a second event.

The format has changed slightly this year, and more emphasis has been put on the festival side of the event rather than the awards. Filmmakers are invited to submit a film to be shown at the festival. From those films shown a shortlist will be produced and the Best International Film choosen by audiences, critics, and members of CAFE.

Only one film may be presented from any Nation, it may be in any language (should be subtitled appropriately), and should be at least 75 minutes in length.

As last time, tickets for all performances are free but will be distributed on a first come first served basis.

CAFE has also negotiated a special dispensation from the Ministry of Trade and Industry to enable filmmakers from any nation, including those currently covered by trade embargoes and travel restrictions, to submit their work.

OOC:

Same guidelines as for the last time:

If interested, submit a brief description of the film (just a paragrph or so) - maybe a satirical or spoof take on a real film presented in NS terms (say Casablanca with Iesus Christi as the Nazis), or just something interesting. Give a few cast names, and a director. I'll create a poll for the most interesting ones.

I'm going to be stricter on the length of submissions. A single paragraph only please (easier for the voting). If you want to write something longer post it seperately and provide a link to it.

I'll make the poll when there's enough interesting entries.

The Line
Directed by Sidney Loon
Produced by Singularity Studios
Soundtrack by ZHMWM, Babylon, Deadworld and System of a Cow.

Based on the extremely popular book of the same name, the Line begins with the invasion of SeOCC by an unholy alliance of capitalist and fascist forces as war descends upon Aperin. Forced from their homes by bombings and ground forces, millions of SeOCC nationals flee into neighboring countries, only to find these safe havens under attack as well. These refugees finally come to ‘the line,’ the point where the initial invasion of Aperin is stopped and held in attrition, and are met by the few remains of SeOCC’s defense forces. Joined by the Volunteers, a quasi-terrorist revolutionary organization, a group of refugees desperate to give themselves a fighting chance join an insane attempt to return to SeOCC and begin a guerilla war in the midst of the occupation of their country.

Daughter of Elysium – an ode to joy
Directed by H. Slager, starring Janneke Herzog

Country of origin: Knootoss
Producer: KNN Movies division
Language: Dutch, subtitles available.
Length: 137 minutes
Genre: Social-realism, fantasy

‘Daughter of Elysium’ tells the tale of a young girls quest for happiness in an unforgiving world. The young actress Janneke Herzog plays the role of 15 year old Noëlle, who roams the streets of Rotterdam alone. Without any parents to care for her, she finds friendship with a male prostitute who teaches her about classical music with an old headset. Slowly Mahsa becomes addicted to ever heavier drugs, provided to her by her friend who is also addicted. She does, however, find hope in the music in a world that becomes smaller and smaller. Hallucinations and music mix in what becomes more and more of a blur between reality and fantasy. In the finale, she finds death by overdose listening to the ‘ode to joy’ (http://www.globalspirituality.org/odetojoynew.htm) in an idyllic delirium. Happy.
The movie gives an unsettling picture of the misery in the underclass of Knootian society, with the central themes being the quest for happiness and ‘heaven’ vs. earth.

((OOC: LOL, SeOCC’s entry gets my vote for the sheer drama. The author of that book was surely brilliant! And, well, as SeOCC ventures in ‘my’ realm I will, in good tradition, do the exact reverse.))

Movie Title: Waters Blue and Brown
Producer: Weeping Willow Moving Pictures of Thesia (affiliated with IanCorp, Int.)
Starring: Kirk Valoon and Andrea Cossi
Director: Emmanuel Giorges
Synopsis: In mid-nineteenth century Gallaga, a young Iansislean Company officer (Valoon) finds himself increasingly drawn to love a young native maiden (Cossi). Torn between his duty to the Company and his king and hers to her native land and religion, the bitter-sweet romance ends tragically. Weeping Willow’s first major motion picture seriously questions race, religion, and their place within the Empire.
Editorial: 8.2/10. Giorges, who both writes and directs, proves himself a major factor on the domestic movie stage. However, despite some brilliant satirical and romantic lines, the somewhat stereotypical plot and Valoon’s intensely mediocre acting may keep Waters Brown and Blue from the list of the greats. Also, northern Carlonia plays a most unconvincing Gallaga.

Director: Jhiir Kharhe
Producer: Zhaxizong Province Council for the Arts
Starring: Su Dexi, Tsering Pasang, Jetrung Tsipoon-Shakabpa
Length: 138 minutes
Genre: Art Noir

Set in the middle of the Xikuangese Occupation, Where Vultures Fear to Fly tells the story of the entwined relationships of two boys as they make the transition to adulthood. Deh Min-Wei is an idealistic young Guo Lengi, as loyal to the imperialistic ideology of his fatherland as his military upbringing could make him. At Academy, he befriends Songren Jirenhe, a quiet, but physically powerful boy, who sticks up for the bullied Min-Wei. Jirenhe appears to be the very model of a native under the Protectorate: a reformed Xikuangese, respectful and grateful to his natural superiors, but as their relationship progresses, Min-Wei begins to suspect that he may not be what he seems. He is drawn increasingly into Jirenhe's world, and eventually finds that he must choose: between two mutually incompatible ethics, the one he has been taught all his life, and the one he is beginning to feel in his heart is the right; and how to act in one of the most difficult situations a man can face: whether to betray his country, or his friend.

The film has been heralded as a rich and honest portrayal of the lives of ordinary people under the Occupation.

Comrades in Death
(French title: Champ d'Honneur)

Director: Alain Kyle
Producer: Dream Paths Studios (government company)
Genre: War, tragic
Length: 168 min
Starring: Yu Zhenli, Robert Hollow, Jean-Jacques Baie, U En, Andrea Wang.
Language: French (with English and Wymgani subtitles)

Comrades in Death is set in the present, and the story follows soldiers on opposite sides in a war. The warring nations are not named, the uniforms are fictitious, and the reasons for the conflict are never stated. The emphasis is on the horrors that are the reality of any war. There are many characters in this film; Yu, Hollow, En and Baie star as comrades in arms, while Wang is a soldier on the enemy side. The violence is often graphic; the fear and atrocities that are experienced by soldiers and civilians caught up in the battles are never toned down. The characters are not heroes, but regular men and women struggling to deal with the situations they are faced with, their duties, and just trying to stay alive. Ultimately, friendships are formed between enemy soldiers. . . then tragically and violently shattered. The film seeks to be both thought-provoking and gut-wrenchingly, disturbingly emotional. . . and an appeal for all to see darkest side of war.

MoI Release: Producers Withdraw the Line From CFF

In a surprise decision, Singluarity has chosen to withdraw their highly anticipated movie from showing at the Celdonian Film Festivals in a show of political protest.

'I'm disgusted that the Celdonian's are willing to sit down with butchers,' said the Line's director Sidney Loon, 'and I have no interest in taking part in this as long as their government carries out such ignorant foreign policy.

'Frankly, I think the Celdonian people have lost sight of what the struggle against capitalism means. They're hooked on their belongings, lost in their affluence, and if they give a shit about the real working class that is exploited daily by the capitalists their government is meeting with they'll vote out this government and vote in someone truly devoted to the revolution.'

The Line will be released, instead, in SeOCC, at the Freemount Cluster in their open air commons theater. Turnout is expected to be massive, and a reserved section will be readied for invited guests. Singularity confirmed they would be inviting CACE dignitaries, with several notable and obvious exceptions.

In response to the announced withdrawal of the Seocc film The Line from the Celdonian International Film festival Hector Forsythe, president of CAFE, said:

"Yes of course it's regrettable that the SeOCC film has been withdrawn, but frankly I won't be losing any sleep over it. And if they want to 'premier' it in SeOCC, then fine...but it's been playing here for a week already so I'm not sure what type of 'premier' they're planning to have."

Asked if the copy of the film held by CAFE would be returned, Mr Forsythe replied: "Yes, of course it will be returned. After the festival is over."

He refused to make any further comment, and would not confirm whether The Line would still be considered for competition.

Blackout Circus
Director: Quentin Barkley
Producer: Marginal Pictures
Starring: Martin Green, Therese Durbeyfield, Oliver Zhang, Gerald O’Neill, Marjorie French, “Big” Tim Stubbins
Sreenwriter: Karen Thiel, adapted from her novel of the same name
Genre: Comedy / Horror
Running Time: 104 min
Other information: Colour and B/W; 35mm; digital capture and projection

Yes Wilson (Green) is the middle-aged owner and ringmaster of the failing Blacktop Circus, which is currently set up outside the small town of Rayville. Business has been slow in recent years, thanks to the development and proliferation of high-tech entertainment, and Yes is seriously thinking about disbanding the entire operation. Adding to his stress level is the upcoming contract re-negotiations for the wild animal trainer Chin (Zhang), and a potentially crippling strike organized by the head of the circus’ freakshow, Tim the Midget (Stubbins, in his feature film debut). Depressed and frustrated, he ignores his wife, contortionist Wanda Wilson (Durbeyfield), and spends most of his off hours in the Rayville drinking establishments. Then, one night, he meets a charismatic magician named Simon Silver (O’Neill) who says he has the cure for his circus’ ills: a disappearing act unlike any other.

Business starts picking up when word of the mystery magic stunt spreads through town, and on opening night, the stands are packed. Halfway through the night, Silver takes the center ring, and announces that he is about to make the most astounding illusion that has ever been attempted. He asks for complete silence, and when the crowd is hushed, he snaps his fingers and the tend is shrouded in darkness. When the lights come back on, Yes finds that Silver has disappeared…along with nearly the entire cast of circus performers and the audience! Only two other people remain: short and surly Tim, and a single audience member named Nancy (a stunningly beautiful French). Together, the three survivors search the circus site for any sign of the missing people, but when they leave the tent, they are confronted with angry circus animals, twisted vampire freaks, and a Haunted House that was never part of the original circus…

Blackout Circus is a surreal whirlwind of film, where laughter and screams come at an equal pace. The film is not intended for persons under the age of sixteen, the age of legal consent in Teakland.

(OOC: The best way I can describe this is to say, "Think of a circus film, directed by David Lynch, with a screenplay and original score by Tom Waits." Because really, that's all that's coming to my mind on how to explain it...)

It is the turn of the 18th century. Length: 193 minutes

It is a typical city in Omz222, Port Januara. The acts of smuggling has been going on there for years, for that Port Januara is the center of smuggling across Omzian Nation. Even the Customs, Secret Service, and Armed Police had trouble to deal with these, as this broad smuggling network is almost impossible to be ripped apart. Like a chief customs officer said before he was assassinated by the "black society" which runs the network: "imagine it like a net. I always tries to rip that net off from the metal bar, but there always will be someone holding the net, preventing em from ripping it apart. The net, that is, is the great evil of drugs smuggling."

Chief Director of Customs Operation Jon Mangla was a new director of the customs aboard. He know what is going on, he know the darkness of this continued business of smuggling drugs. He vowed to fight, but as the "Black Society of Januara" starts to avoid killing officers, he got tricked by the criminal net. Accepting a gift of a new computer system unexpectantly from another fellow customs officer who is working for the "Black Society", he was eventually lured into the trap. Now, accused of corruption, smuggling, abuse of power, betryal, and accepting bribes, he faces the ultimate: the death penalty. He has already been tried. His family, a wife and 2 sons, tried to rescue him, but failed for now. The deadline for appeal is now 1 days away. Can he survive the ultimate penalty? Can someone finally prove his innocence and free him from death?

based on a real incident.

OOC: Sorry for the lateness, I just found this thread. Three films for me, just a sort of trilogy, that's all.

The Weegia Film Collective wish to put in for CAFE consideration the Aperin History Trilogy, premiering the final piece, Aperin Falling.

War In Aperin (2002)

Director: Martin Watt
Narrator: George McLeish
Starring: Far, far too many people to give a mention.
Length: 173 minutes
Studio: Weegia Film Collective.
Language: English, also containing various Aperinian languages with English subtitles.
Genre: Documentary.

Showing the tensions & deep resentments that led up to the Great Aperin War, and the War itself, the Weegia Film Collective consider War In Aperin as their finest piece of production. Mixing reconstructions of secret meetings with real footage of the Aperin War, and the countries that took part in it. Political intrigue and tension abounds as Imperial Outside forms alliances against the Aperin Coal Cartel, finally exploding into major war between the two power blocks. Narrating arguments between the Coal Cartel, the conditions of the people in the warring countries, the brutal warfare used in the war which killed millions of people, and the repression tactics of the notorious Guo Leng in Xikuang, George McLeish, an Aperin historian, leads us through this thrillling chapter in the shaping of the political landscape of Aperin.

Aperin Rising (2003)

Director: Martin Watt
Narrator: George McLeish
Starring: Far, far too many people to give a mention.
Length: 192 minutes
Studio: Weegia Film Collective.
Language: English, also containing various Aperinian languages with English subtitles.
Genre: Documentary.

Charting the rise of the Federal Republic of Aperin from its formation after the Great Aperin War to the beginning of the end in 1967, Martin Watt & George McLeish's second Aperin History film uses film material from the time period, interviews, and dramatic reconstructions of events crucial to the understanding to the Aperin republic. See the formation of the FRA from the Aperin War Council after the ravages of the Great Aperin War come to life, as actors portray major figures from Svea Riga, Tellenic Aperin, Empire Aperin, and the other major players in the formation, interspersed with actual film footage of the FRA in its glory days, while noted Aperin historian George McLeish narrates the causes of the formation, the tensions between the federated nations, and life inside the wealthy republic itself.

And Finally:

Aperin Falling (2004)

Director: Martin Watt
Narrator: George McLeish
Starring: Far, far too many people to give a mention.
Length: 124 minutes
Studio: Weegia Film Collective.
Language: English, also containing various Aperinian languages with English subtitles.
Genre: Documentary.

The third and final part in Watt & McLeish's Aperin History Trilogy shows the disintegration of the Federal Republic of Aperin into its constituent states - and the formation of new ones. Set in the period 1967-1973, the mixing of dramatic reconstructions, interviews, and footage from the time, Aperin Falling shows us through this troubled time period the origins of the Arco-Nation of SeOCC, in both the breakaway from Heliotos and in the Incorporation Revolution, which led the way to the formation of SeOCC as it is today, while also showing the fragmentation of the Federal Republic of Aperin to the nations of Aperin which exist today.
