RAOS (Raos Assoc. Press) – As of 5:00 PM SDT, a large, peaceful Islamic demonstration that had drawn thousands turned into a battleground leaving dozens dead and hundreds wounded. The rally started at 4:00 PM at the Civic Center Park. It was being held in reaction to the recent hate crimes being perpetrated throughout Siosia this past week.

A radical, fringe Catholic group named the Catholic Liberation Front (CLF) has claimed responsibility of nearly five fire bombings of mosques that have claimed the lives of 27 people, including 5 children. Siosian police have been unsuccessful on capitalizing upon any of their leads regarding the CLF. Some suspect that the police department may in fact be infiltrated by some of the members, hampering the investigation.

The rally was scheduled as an attempt to protest the lack of urgency the Siosian government has taken in response to the hate crimes. Hundreds of protestors sympathizing with the CLF began to collect several blocks away.

At approximately 5:00 PM a bomb detonated deep within the Islamic rally. Preliminary reports suggest that it was placed in a trash can and loaded with nails. The shrapnel bomb caused horrendous destruction, killing dozens immediately closest and wounding people as far as 75 feet away. The panicked mass quickly became frenzied, charging at the pro-CLF partisans. Limited police forces were incapable of restraining the horde and were quickly overrun. Several officers were injured.

The frenzied group of Islamic extremists clashed with the CLF symapthizers on 21st and Civic Street. The Islamic extremists quickly over-ran them, and are continued on a riot up 21st street. Police are responding with the Rapid Action Force (RAF), hoping to take down the crowd with tear gas and other non-lethal force.

The aftermath was virtually indescribable as one witness, who asked for their anonymity, stammered with teary eyes, “I don’t believe this is happening…it’s as though hell has descended upon Raos.” A national state of emergency has been declared, calling militia numbers into place.

Further details shall be published as soon as they are received.

RAOS (Assoc. Press) - Chaos has unleashed within Siosia. In the latest turn of events, the ArchBishop of the Catholic Church of Raos, Sermeni, condemned the Islamic and Buddhist churches and temples, declaring them "sacrilegious and a curse upon this world." He demanded that Catholics across the country defend their religion from this "blight" by "whatever means possible." Catholics across Siosia responded to the call by public beatings and executions of Muslims and Buddhists. The Legion has yet to respond to these attacks.

Yesterday, a bomb detonated amidst an Islamic rally, killing 38 and wounding 120. The group swiftly transformed into a mob, swarming over a group of people supporting CLF actions a few blocks away at 21st and Civic Street. The police were quickly overrun, leaving 12 officers injured and 3 in critical condition. The enraged Muslims outnumbered the Catholics nearly five to one. Within minutes, dozens of Catholics were beaten into submission. The Islamic mob proceeded down 21st street carrying the bodies of two unidentified men.

The riot continued down the street for several blocks until they reached the St. Ignatius Catholic Church. They forced their way into the building by force and crucified the two men while allegedly chanting "die as your Savoir." The mob set fire to the church; however, the police Rapid Action Force showed up before they could leave the scene. There was a standoff for several minutes in the shadow of the burning church until shots were fired. Immediately the police sent a barrage of bullets into the throng causing the group to instantaneously disperse.

Eyewitness accounts vary greatly between the first shot coming from the police or the crowd. Even one reports the shot being fired from the alleyway next to the church. Regardless of the cause, the outcome was a massacre, leaving an unknown number dead and wounded. The Medical Corps has been contacted.

Nationwide response has varied dramatically to this unfolding of events. The ArchBishop Seremeni broadcast an announcement from St. Mary's Cathedral in Alexandria late last night demanding that Catholics "fight against all those that threaten the Catholic Church by whatever means possible." In his shocking speech he expressed support for the CLF responsible for several attacks upon mosques this past week. Seremeni praised this group as "God's arm of justice." Protestant churches have been issuing public statements differing amongst themselves. The Presbyterian church called for "support for the Catholic Church in these difficult times," while the Lutheran Church proclaimed that "this is the time of prayer for the dead innocent, not one of retribution."

Catholics outnumber Muslims in Siosia by nearly four to one, and in several cities across the country there have been publicly supported beatings and in same cases, lynching of Muslims. Buddhists have also been the subject of several hate crimes. Nationally recognized Rev. Kubose asked Buddhists to "seek peace in this storm" and "remain nonviolent as we have for centuries."

The government has lost any sense of control in this situation and there is a suspected but unconfirmed insurgency within the Siosian Military. Prime Minister Klein released a statement from an undisclosed location pleading the citizens of Siosia to "adhere to the values of compassion and goodwill." Klein stated his "genuine concern" that "the very values that bind this country together are ripping it apart."

There are times when one may understand the splendor of life. They are the times when one witnesses the decay of death.

Gunfire echoed in the distance, down the deserted avenue that would normally be filled with activity at this time of day. Today there was nothing but faint screams and the firing of guns. Around a slight curve, an indiscreet villa appeared to be empty. The villa was characterized by the twin oak trees that grew on either side of the path leading up to the hand-crafted mahogany door. Wind rustling through the leaves gave the scene an un-natural calm.

Inside and alone, crouched Lt. Kevin Paswell, donning his Black Talon uniform. He leaned against a wall, brandishing a small jet-black pistol in his left hand and his cherished saber in his right. Paswell’s icy gaze was fixed upon a solitary picture frame on a small redwood table he had spent weeks crafting. The two happy faces of his dead parents gleamed back at him. He looked away, shrugging off the beaming smiles. Filled with a resolute acceptance of what was soon to pass, Paswell had settled into a quiet peace.

This is my future, my life. I shall not run from it. The gunfire and cries of the street faded into the background as he closed his eyes to find a surprising serenity. Memories of his life washed over him. Here he was at the eye of the storm.

A door burst open downstairs as it was kicked in, jarring Paswell from his peace. Several men, from what Paswell could hear, ran inside running room to room. He heard a distant voice that was all too familiar, “check upstairs.”

Paswell let out a final sigh and prepared himself for what was about to come. Men were running up the stairs now, coming down the hall. This is it, he thought; my life has come to pass. Raising his pistol and clenching the saber, he was almost in a trance now, as though he was but a spectator watching this entire thing unfold.

A soldier outside raised his boot and kicked in the door, sending it flying from its hinges. If only he knew what waited on the other side. He stepped within the room, never seeing the shooter in the corner next to the door. The bullet ripped into his side, tearing through his abdomen. Falling to the ground, the soldier turned his head to catch a fleeting glimpse of a man donned in black carrying a silver saber. As quickly as it came, it faded away into darkness, and a final raspy breath escaped his lips.

_________

“Put your weight into it!” Paswell’s voice was barely heard above the roar of the jet flying overhead. “You can’t just throw the axe around with your arms all day. Use your body!”

Baodin looked over with obvious disdain painted across his face. He swallowed a comment after looking into Lt. Paswell’s cold blue eyes. Baodin picked up the axe once more and turned to the massive trunk of the tree before him.

Paswell turned away after he disgustingly watched Baodin’s poor form become even worse, “the youth of today, when will they learn to stay their anger…”

“Lieutenant, need I remind you that there was a day when you felled trees in this very forest being barked at by that wretched Savian?”

Paswell looked over to his old friend with a laugh, “Well, that ugly bastard was but a dog, was he not?”

Savian looked over at him, letting out a throaty laugh, “Aye, I suppose he was.” Savian continued alongside Paswell smiling at recollections of a much younger Lieutenant. Almost a recluse, he always caught Savian’s attention more than the others. Whenever he threw insults his way, Paswell would simply stare him down, a fire burning in his ice-cold eyes.

A loud, cacophonous siren pierced through the air suddenly ripped him from his recollections. Savian threw a panicked look at Paswell who returned the same expression. The two stood in shock for several seconds having never heard the emergency siren save for practice drills. There was no practice drill slated for day.

Paswell suddenly jumped to action shouting, “clean up the camp and return immediately to your barracks. Savian is in command now. Move with haste!” Without so much as a second look, Paswell dashed from the clearing, cloak flapping in the chilling wind. Thoughts were racing through his head. What could have happened? Surely there had not been an attack upon our shores, diplomatic relations were strong.

As he approached the outermost barracks where new recruits were housed he noticed a group of about eight men huddled around a radio listening intently to whatever was being broadcast. Paswell noticed that one man had out a rosary and was silently reciting the Hail Mary. He slowed to a stop right behind the men, receiving furtive glances from several of them. Paswell said nothing, instead he strained to hear what was on the radio

“…unknown amount of casualties. The mob has since progressed down 21st street carrying the bodies of two men. The scene is absolutely shocking. I have never seen the likes of this before in my history as a reporter. There is blood and screaming everywhere…”

Paswell couldn’t pause any longer and dashed away, leaving the alarmed recruits behind focused on the radio. As he ran past each of the barracks, he caught a small bit of the story. It seemed as though every single soldier at camp was listening. “…the bomb resulted in total carnage…” “…that the CLF is responsible…” “…police forces were inadequate to stop them…”

Paswell was completely bewildered as to what was happening. He had been hearing of reports regarding the CLF firebombing several Mosques, but what could have happened that would require the emergency alert. Hopefully General Gan Orrin would be able to alleviate his confusion. Paswell bounded up the steps of the Officer’s Assembly Hall and burst through the doors almost out of breath.

“I see you decided to grace us with your company Lt. Paswell. Penalty for your late response to such a dire call shall be handled later,” sneered General Orrin from the head of the room. “Now that you have so rudely interrupted us, may I continue?” Without pausing for a response, Orrin continued speaking from his dais to the collected core of nearly 500 officers from the Black Talon who turned back from Paswell to face the general. Angry at the unfair reprimanding from Orrin, Paswell took a spot near the back and swallowed his anger by silently reciting a few lines of the Dharma. He then tuned in to what Orrin was saying.

“…Prime Minister Klein has of course issued a national state of emergency, pleading the military to respond to this violence. However, I’m afraid that we won’t be for some time now. If it were up to Prime Minister Klein,” there was a note of disdain in his voice, “we would restore this unhealthy balance of religion.” Paswell was genuinely shocked by what he was hearing. “For too long has this country been disgraced by these defilers of God. The CLF has presented this country with a golden opportunity. We may for once and all cleanse this country of those who sully it.

“Long have I been forced to sit back, watching as so many around me are forcibly indoctrinated with such foolish ideas of ‘tolerance.’ How can we watch as the minds of the youth are corrupted by such idiotic beliefs? I cannot sit idly by and watch this happen. I have come to understand my purpose in life. I may be the catalyst that will cause this paramount change in our great country.”

Paswell could not believe what he was hearing. Long had he known that Orrin was a pious Catholic, along with a majority of his closest officers. In fact, now that Paswell considered it, the Black Talon was heavily Catholic, much more so than it should be considering that only a fourth of Siosia was. He glanced back at the door he had come through now with a note of concern, noticing for the first time that there were six men armed with assault rifles posted at the door. This gaze shifted to the other exit on the other side of the room. It was guarded as well.

Orrin was still speaking. “Comrades, too many of you this will not be news. The CLF is more pervasive than you might think.” Paswell noticed some nuances of knowing nods among those around him. There were only a few in the crowd that were shocked, many of whom he recognized to be Buddhist and Muslim. “For long has it existed in secrecy, plotting, hoping for the day that it may take action. This last week, everything has gone according to plan. Soon all of you shall see the glory of what is to unfold.”

Paswell was genuinely alarmed at this point. Long had he suffered from small degrading comments from Orrin. Paswell simply never realized that they were borne out of detest of his own religion, Buddhism. Even though he was not a Muslim who had been the sole target of the CLF until this point, he did not have to look twice at the armed guards to know what was soon to happen. Drowning out Orrin’s fateful speech, Paswell focused mind upon planning out his escape route and the next course of action. Who can I contact, Paswell thought while racking his mind. If the CLF truly has infiltrated into the Black Talon, where has it not? The answer hit him. The Black Diamond Initiative.

He would most likely be able to send out a transmission to the BDI from his villa, but where would he head from there? That mattered little at this point, from the sounds of Orrin’s speech, total genocide was about to take place. Just before he was about to back away towards the door, something Orrin said caught his attention, “Many of us have been forced to comply to the secular beliefs of many of those in congress and the head committee. As we speak, units are converging upon them.” Paswell did not wait to hear another word. He tightly secured his cloak and carefully drew his pistol underneath it.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, blocking out everything around him. Clearing his mind, Paswell focused his body and concentration. Years of preparation and training were culminating at this point. He never would have guessed the enemy would be his own brethen. Spinning around, he tossed his silver butane lighter towards the door. The six guards looked up, alarmed at the sudden movement, but before they could react, Paswell was already firing shots at the glistening object as it sailed through the air. On the fourth shot, a bullet connected. A small ball of fire erupted sending pieces of metal flying in all directions, scattering the guards.

Without wasting a second, Paswell threw the cloak from his face and dashed out the door leaving 500 shocked officers in his wake. Back at the podium Orrin muttered to himself, “you have only bought yourself a few precious minutes Paswell.” Shouting now over the entire auditorium which had been thrown into an uproar, Orrin gave his final order, “The time of the CLF is upon Siosia, a new dawn is reckoning. All those loyal to our cause, reveal your true colors!”

His voice resounded throughout the auditorium and was met with a roar of approval from hundreds in the crowd. As though on cue, the cheering officers threw off their cloaks, revealing a bright red insignia on their arms, while at the same time drawing their pistols and facing their bewildered and frightened comrades.

Paswell was already several hundred yards away from the building when he heard the distant gunfire. He almost halted for a moment to chance a look, but decided not to risk it Turning a corner he sighted a Jeep parked outside of a barrack with the engine still running. Paswell was relieved by this good fortune. He hopped to the driver’s seat and ripping up a cloud of dust, he spun the vehicle around.

Paswell reached his house without event five minutes later and bounded up the front pathway underneath the twin oak trees that were quivering in the wind. Once inside, he sprinted upstairs to his office where a comm.-link had been installed a few weeks ago. Stopping first at the wall safe, he hurriedly removed a discreet black binder bearing the communication frequencies of the BDI. Paswell flipped through the pages until he came across the Emergency Channel page. He picked up the transistor and quickly punched in the appropriate code as he muttered it to himself, “117-AV-267-X07P.”

He paused for a moment and then began. “This is Lt. Kevin Paswell of Siosia, ID # 157020-L. A Coup d'état is underway, headed by General Gan Orrin and the CLF. Congress has been kidnapped, assumingly for collateral to protect against outside intervention. Requesting assistance immediately. Genocide is imminent.” He took a deep breath, “Swiftness is absolutely necessary, Orrin will fortify the shores shortly. I will try to stay in contact.” He released the comm.-link button with his trembling finger.

Across the room, his sleek saber hung upon the wall symbolizing all that he had strived to achieve in his life. It hung there, completely unadorned emanating power from the strong silver hilt. Paswell strode over and took it from the wall, slowly releasing the shining blade from the scabbard. He moved to the corner next to the door and slid to the ground with his back against the wall.

There was nowhere to run, the borders of Gurnisa would be sealed by now. I will wait for what fate has in store for me, Paswell thought.

CLF-Based Coup, Congress and Head Committee Seized

RAOS (Assoc. Press) - General Gan Orrin has declared war upon Siosia in the "name of God." Orrin forcibly seized control of the Emergency Broadcast System, relaying a message to the entire country. In his ten minute address, Orrin, who was also joined by ArchBishop Seremeni and Senator Vose, declared that Siosia "has become a cesspit of secular and sacrilegious fools" and it was his duty to "elevate Siosia to a new order." Orrin also admitted to being a member of the CLF.

Seremeni took the stage for a short period of time, asking his "brothers of christianity" to understand the impending violence as an "evil justified by it's purpose." He officially denounced the Buddhist and Islam religions, and called upon the Protestants of Siosia to look past their past disagreements and "unite under the bond of God and Jesus."

Senator Vose spoke for a few short minutes, repeating much of what the others had said; however, adding more shock to the situation, he announced that the Siosian Head Committee and Congress had been seized hostage. They were allegedly taken somewhere in route to the fortified emergency operations center at Mt. Sadian. These "prisoners of the CLF" are being held hostage "in order to prevent meddling nations from intervening with Siosian affairs." Following the broadcast, they aired a picture of a battered Prime Minister Klein being held in a darkly lit room. The authenticity of the picture has yet to be confirmed, but preliminary analysis suggests that it is in fact genuine.

Orrin declared that the Siosian military is now entirely under his own command and would follow the orders of the CLF. News of a coordinated massacre in the Black Talon Camp of Gurnisa outside of Raos was confirmed by an private airplane pilot. The pilot who asked to retain his anonymity, described seeing a "pyre of bodies" sending a thick dark cloud of smoke into the air. While Orrin did not admit to any such massacre, he made mention of "cleansing the establishments of the filth that has defiled this country for too long."

There has yet to be any news from the Legion, Armada, and Sky Company, nor any formal statements of resistance.

This broadcast aired while violence is continuously escalating. Whether the current hate crimes being perpetrated against Buddhists and Muslims are entirely the actions of the CLF is unknown; however, due to the extensive range of these attacks, it is probable that much of this violence is uncoordinated. There has yet to be an out lashing against Agnostics and Atheists who compose approximately 15% of the population.

Many of the major cities, must notable Raos now have riots raging through the streets, and the police are no longer operating efficiently. Throughout the country there are only a few cities left that are still peaceful. Most people have been thrown into a frenzy by the unfolding of events in the past 24 hours.

Orrin announced that the Black Talon will be marching to the capital within hours at which time martial law will commence, "allowing the CLF to seize control of the government."

There has yet to be news of any form of international aid.
RAOS (Assoc. Press) - Due to the most recent escalation of violence and advance of the CLF towards the capital, the Raos Associated Press is evacuating it's head office in Raos and will no longer be able to continue it's distribution of articles.

".......I will try to stay in contact.? The young soldier looked at the computer screen. It was indeed coming from Siosia. He swiveled in his chair and stood up, walking over to the general. "General sir!"

The tired looking general glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. "Yes, what is it?"

"Sir, just recieved a call that all hell is breaking loose in Siosia. They request help."

The general looked at the complete message printout that was handed to him by another officer. He read it quickly. "Get 8 squads on this. I also want Lieutenant Wrathe on this one."

"Sir, sending the orders now."

SOET Base, Sigmara Desert, Sigma Octavus

Two black painted SOH-2s sat in the hangar, around which the bustle of a quick prep team loading for an assault was occuring. 8 squads of SOET ran to the transports in the mess, loaded down with gear. A single figure strode out after them. He wasn't wearing the full body armor of an SOET, instead opting for camo pants, a white shirt and a black vest. He grabbed a G36 off a nearby cart and strode onto the transport right before the hatches closed.

The prep team rushed off, finished with their job, and the ceiling opened up. The two transports lifted out of the building and shot off over the massive desert, glinting in the sun until they were over the horizion.

It was early evening in DA. In the rural region The Manor was located in, it was all silence, only the quiet voices of a few men and women could be heard.

Althena just sat there, listening, an Owl on her shoulders. The people around her were discussing.

DA is a strange nation... almost everyone is atheist, only small minority groups, the losers in this hypercapitalist society were a state doesn´t even exist and small- scale conflicts, even armed conflict, between corporations are 'normal', occasionally follow sorts of rather weird religious cults like the Order of [Violet]... But the intelligence service, the giant 'espionage corporation', founded 1800 b.c....

To be in there, one has to be catholic in the second generation. And despite all the atheism ruling ther nation, they are the ones making the decisions. The secret rulers, hiding in the shadows...

This explains many things. It explains the (comparably) good relations they have to Lavenrunz. It explains the pro- christian foreign policy they have...

It is anachronistic, but nevertheless... It´s the truth.

"So... BDI positions on the issue?"
"Not yet known. We will have to check soon. Since we`re sort of... uh... well, not exactly active..."
"Yes, i know... however..."
"In any case. We cannot openly support the new ruler."
"Not yet..."
"I think first of all, we need to stay quiet..."
"No."

The men discussing stopped, looking at Althena, or rather, the owl. It was another product of the bioorganic tech promoted by the Mad Scientists Conference, an AI implemented in it`s half- artificial mind. Then, Althena begun speaking. "She`s right. While we cannot yet risk accepting the new government, we need to make clear we are there. In the background, yes, but we are there. We will offer help. Rebuilding, peacekeeping and so on. Since the opinions of other BDI members are not yet known, we need to be quick. We need to prevent a drawback. The current situation is... Acceptable."

This was all she said.

Only minutes later, the message was send.

"We are saddened to hear of your current... problems, and are more than willing, no, we are actually eager to help you in this time of need. Id anything is needed, we are willing to supply you with it, may it be monetary ressources, peacekeeping forces, food or whatever is necessary.

There shuldn´t be conflict when they can be peace. There shouldn´t be misery when there can be joy.

(OOC - Sorry for the delay, was hoping for a few more BDI responses.)

Orrin leaned over the private's shoulder, checking what had been written. Nodding, Orrin gave the confirmation, "Very good. Now we need to take care of Paswell. His communications link has already been severed, correct?"

The private sitting at the computer replied, "Yes, sir. He will not be sending or receiving any more messages."

Orrin sat back and smiled, "It seems Paswell's day has come." Turning to the Lt. standing at the door, Orrin asked, "Are the units in position?"

The Lt. responded without any sign of emotion, "Yes, sir. We have eight men surrounding the house. We couldn't spare any more loyalists as the rest are currently...occupied with the cleansing."

"Very good," Orrin said, the smile still on his face, "tell the men not to move forward until I am present."

The previous message that you have received was in fact a ruse by a single rogue Lt. who, in our investigation, has ties with a small organization with the sole goal of bringing Siosia to war. Measures have already been taken to ensure no further broadcasts, and I apologize for any trouble this message may have caused. The BDI emergency network is now fully secure again.

I would also like to alleviate current suspicions in response to recent press publications. The Raos Assoc. Press was also affiliated with this group, and were reporting falsehoods to the world in an attempt to cause an international war upon our country. External communications from Siosia have all been restricted at this point until we can resolve this issue.

I would like to stress that this is a domestic affair, and we will handle it as such.
