Basketball Bash Begins with Bye
Lynxes to Rest Before Championship Starts

Ronnie Schofield, captain of the Lynxes basketball team, yesterday stated that he was "pleased with the draw, obviously, since it gives us one less game to fight before the final". When a journalist commented that it would perhaps be a bit overconfident to talk of a final already, he said "All right. Make that before we win then."

GEMS LOOK SET FOR CRUSHING
Trevor Montecinos in Slip City, Sliponia.

The NEWI Cefn Druids Gems have been drawn in the Southeast section of the Richer Classic Basketball here in Sliponia, and look set to follow in the footsteps of all the other 'great' sporting teams in recent NEWI Cefn Druids history.

Although it is the cup's inaugural tournament, the teams in the Gems' section are much more renowned for their sportoing prowess than they are. But this has not deterred coach Eric Stone. "We don't care," was Stone's short but to the point reply when asked about the draw.

From the Desike City News:

Team Dary will face old rival
The Rejistanian Basketball team, the so-called 'Team Dary' will face Kaze Progressa in the first match of the Richter Classic Cup. Even if Team Dary never met the the Progressnas before (not quite surprising in the first installment of a Cup), the both nations have met several times in different cups. The Rejistanha'ny field hockey team played against Kaze Progressa in the FHWC once (the match ended in a draw), the Orange-Whites have defeated the Progressan handball team once in the first handball world cup. There were some rumours, that a ice hockey team from Rejistania played in the Cherry Cup, hosted by KP, but this is surely not true. Rejistania never had an ice hockey team.

Coach Dy'he commented the draw: "Kaze*? Sounds like we'll get a lot of fun!" Well, The DCN hopes, that the Team Dary will play like his name promises.

*OOC: It is insanely hard to pronounce 'Progressa' for Rejistanians

Rejistania 'progresses' against Progressans
The rejistanian Team Dary played in its first match merely as Team 'Milhan alte'*. Despite the Rejistanians won, the game made the viewer seriously doubt that the name 'Team Dary' is justified: Most of the time, the Progressans were leading, even if the lead was never very high. The Rejistanians had luck especially in the last minutes of the game, when Kansu'he and Syku'he turned a 96-107 into a 105-107. However even this great run nearly was not enough. Fortunatly, I~lnri Syku make a 3-poimt throw virtually in the last seconds of the game, which allowed the Rejistanians to move into the next round. Coach Dy'he commented later: "These Progressans were really good. I'm glad that we won in spite of that. Of course it was close, damn close, but we won, that's what counts!" About the discussion if the Rejistanians are really a 'Team Dary' Dy said, smiling: "That's basketball, showing off, boasting and exaggerating belongs to it like the ball."

* 'Team Dary' is was intended to mean: 'Team High Victory', the DCN made it 'Team Draw'

GEM-MY GETS!
Trevor Montecinos reports on the controversies surroundint The Belmore Family 52 NEWI Cefn Druids 57 (2OT)

The NEWI Cefn Druids Gems won an incredibly low-scoring encounter against The Belmore Family, though both sides were not happy with the officiating.

Even before the match, the two sides seemed to query some of the features of the court. Belmorian player Tristian Griffifs noticed the most obvious fault - "Where are the backboards?" he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Gems' Trevor Kopsahilis also seemed displeased. He was heard to say "I'm sure this court is bigger than usual."

Indeed, it was later proved that this was the case - the Sliponian officials had used metric measurements to mark out the court instead of measuring it in yards, making the court bigger and, more significantly, the baskets higher. Luckily, the hoops remained the same size, otherwise they wopuld have been to small to fit the ball through had they been changed from inches to centimetres.

Unfortunately for the Belmorians, the result has been declared official by the World Cup organisers. In a statement released shortly after the end of the match, it was confirmed that the result would stand, as conditions were the same for both sides, with no advantage being gained by either.

These errors overshadowed the entire match, stopping the two sides from playing the flowing game we all know and love. However, Bobby Sharp was probably the most valuable player of the match - managing to score 22 points for the Belmorian team, he pretty much ruled the court. The Gems, though, dug in, and somehow managed to cope with both the unusual surroundings and the energetic sharp. Somehow, by the end of the fourth quarter, the teams were tied at 39 apiece.

Then, in the first period of overtime, disaster for The Belmore Family. 46-41 up, Sharp landed awkwardly after a simple leap for a loose ball, twisting his ankle. He had to go off, and with him went his teams chances.

It let the Gems back into a game they deserved to lose, and by the end of the first period of overtime, it was back level at 48-48. But now it was the Gems who were in control, and they cruised through the second period of overtime, ending up as 57-52 winners, earning the right to play Audioslavia in the next round. However, if we've heard the last of this one, then we're probably not listening.

Sliponians Get Through Due To Referee's Mistake?
The Buzzer Sounded Before Goal, Schofield Claims

Ronnie Schofield, the Cockbill Street captain, yesterday lodged an official complaint to the IBB. He claimed that "it was obvious that the buzzer for full time sounded before the Sliponian shot landed". This could be quite important for Cockbill Street, as they led the game 101-100 before the shot was made and scored.

However, the IBB official dismissed Schofield as "a sore loser", saying that the video replays showed that the ball was entirely through the basket with 8 tenths of a second left on the clock, making the points officially valid, and Sliponia's victory correctly achieved.

As for the match, it was a very entertaining one. The Sliponians quickly took a lead of five points, one which they never gave away in the first half. The closest Cockbill Street got was when Schofield netted a three, leaving them only a point short at 39-40, but two quick penalties saw Sliponia pull away again. They led 55-48 when the teams went off for half-time.

In the second half, the Streeters lifted their play even more, and took the lead in the beginning of the fourth quarter. The game then drifted back and forth until a quick three-pointer from Chris Snape followed by some good defending and a counter-attack led to a five-point lead for the Streeters with six minutes left on the clock. The Sliponians ground their way back into the match, but never got the lead until 8 tenths of a second from time. Tough luck, and we hope that the Streeters will play better next time.

GEMS SPARKLE
Trevor Montecinos in Sliponia for the Richter Classic.

While the sporting world seems to be looking elsewhere, and seeing team after team from NEWI Cefn Druids failing at everything they try their hands at, those at home now have some genuine sporting heroes to cheer about.

Step forward the NEWI Cefn Druids Gems, who are in Sliponia for basketball’s Richter Classic. After an infamous first round match, the Gems have gone from strength to strength, beating Audioslavia, a team that looked like it would go far before the tournament, and Rejistania. The victory against the ‘Team Dary’ was one that the Gems should be particularly proud of, as their opponents had the greater share of possession and chances, but many of these were wasted. Coupled with a mercurial eight three pointers from Trevor Kopsahilis, the Druid Gems went on to be victorious in the South-East group final by 88-84. They now go on to face the host nation in the Championship final.

The Gems’ unexpected success has taken what was a minority sport back home and turned it into one of the most popular. In fact, the Championship final could have up to 60% of the population tuning in. It will definitely be the most viewed sporting even in Druid history, if not the most viewed show in the nation’s entire television history. After starting out as rank outsiders, it is still very much an achievement. But if they beat Sliponia in their own back yard? Who knows what will happen?

Team Dary wins third place
The Team Dary has proven that the name is not quite unjustified. In this tournament, they won 3 out of 4 matches and secured themselfes a justified third place. Since the attention of the DCN was very much focussed on the World Cup and how Syku Hexen performed there, we now give you a short review of the matches:
Rejistania - Wella ended in a 77-63 victory for the Team Dary. The newcomers to international sport made a good match, but the Team Dary proved that they can actually win games,
The final of the group was between NEWI Cefn Druids, a nation that in other sports is performing rather bad. In basketball however, the Druids defeated the Team Dary merely by luck 84-88.
The vinali tikira was between the nation of Waughslind, unknown in other competitions, and the Team Dary. This time, the Team Dary had the right amount of skill and luck to win 84-75. The Team Dary has reached the third place in the first installment of the Richter Classic.

Congratulations, Team Dary!

GEMS WIN!!!!!!!!!!
Trevor Montecinos in Sliponia on Sliponia 97 NEWI Cefn Druids 98

The streets of NEWI Cefn Druids were one big party last night, as the nation’s basketball players landed the biggest prize in the sport.

The inaugural Richter Classic was held in Sliponia, who the NCD Gems faced in the final. In the greatest match of any sport in Druid history, the Gems somehow managed to pip the home team to the title with the last throw of the match.

Though the match was close throughout, it was Sliponia who were ahead for the most part, though the lead was never beyond five points either way. The Gems started well, with a couple of Kopsahilis’ trademark three pointers, but the home side went past them, and by the end of the first quarter were 23-21 up. The second quarter was a reverse of the first, with Sliponia starting slightly stronger before NCD came back to within one point, 46-45 the score at half time.

The third quarter was very close, with the lead changing hands throughout. At the end of it, it was still anyone’s game, with the scores tied at 73. But then the Gems looked like they were fading slightly. They gave the ball away too easily, and went into the final minute 97-93 down. The Gems attacked, and scored a simple two pointer through Gordon Morgan, meaning it was Sliponia by two. But then the real drama unfolded. First, to wind down the clock, the Sliponians simply passed the ball about. However, they were forced to get a shot in, and somehow, after wearing the Gems’ defence down, they managed to miss the hoop. With just five seconds on the clock, Kopsahilis raced to the other end, where, instead of going for the simple two points that would force overtime, he went for the three points that would secure victory. The crowd stood watched, stunned, as the ball bounced off the hoop, and then the backboard, before trickling back down through the hoop at the moment time was called.

History had been made, the first ever team from NEWI Cefn Druids to win a major sporting event had been the Gems, and what a way for it to happen. However, it was such a cruel way for Sliponia to lose. Their players looked devastated, as did 99% of the arena. Fans we asked after the game were too distraught to comment. It must be said, though, that either team would have been worthy winners on the night, and neither deserved to lose.

Meanwhile, back home in Cefn City, over two million people took to the streets to celebrate the victory, including President Trevor T. Druid, who has declared the rest of the week a national holiday in celebration.
