The 29-year-old king of the Arterian River (ooc: my puppet) today died suddenly of a heart attack. To further compound the situation, he has no children and no brothers.
The nation is in turmoil, there is rioting in the streets. No one knows who will rule the Arterian River next. The person with the most support among the government is the ruler of the Dominion of the Anti-Commi Clan, who is married to the king's sister. However, multiple advisors and other high-ups in the kingdom are also conspiring to take the throne. Some even support democracy. Civil war is rumoured.
A little backround:
The Arterian River is an ancient kingdom, situated in a valley between Germany and France. A river passes through it. A Germanic tribe lived there until the Romans conquered the place in A.D. 107. The Roman commander, Arterius, liked the place, and obtained permission from the Roman Emperor Trajan to build a town there. He named the town and river Arterius, after himself. The town prospered, and in A.D. 116, a second town was founded in the valley, called Trajanas after the Emperor. More towns were founded in A.D. 157 (Relofus) and A.D. 240 (Estrene). When Christianity spread through the Roman Empire, the people of the towns readily accepted it. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the ruler of the valley assumed the name King of the Arterian River, and so the kingdom was founded.
The people continued to speak Latin, and that is their language to this day. Arterius became a place for merchants throughout Gaul and Germany to trade their goods. The Kingdom withstood attacks from the Germanic tribes until A.D. 641, when the King conquered a few tribes and executed the leaders.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the Kingdom was known as a hotbed of innovative thought. In A.D. 1405, the famous painter Timotheus Arterius (a member of the royal family) painted his most famous work The Banks of the Arterius, showing the bustling life of the now city Trajanas.
When Columbus discovered America in 1492, the Arterians, being the innovative people that they are, realized the importance of this discovery. They struck a deal with Spain and colonized parts of Argentina; the city of New Arterius was founded in 1534. It remains a possesion of the Arterian River to this day.
When the Reformation arrived, the people of the Arterian River readily accepted it, mainly because the king had not bought into what the papacy said, and kept the church pure; thus the ideas of the reformation were not very strange to the people of the Arterian River. In 1654, the Arterian River got into a war with Cologne and conquered it. In 1688, the Arterian River declared war on Portugal because the King of Portugal insulted the Arterian King's aunt's dog. With the help of Spain, the Indonesian island of Sulawesi was conquered, and became a possesion of the Arterian River.
When steam power was discovered in the 1700s, a savvy merchant named Brucius Leskidus saw the importance of this. He built a factory in Arterius, producing bread. When Revolutionary Fervor hit Europe in the late 1700s, the King decided to save his throne and made laws that made the people freer.
In the Council of Berlin, which divided up Africa, the King won the rights to portions of Namibia. In World War I, the Arterian River stayed neutral, but in World War II, the Nazis invaded. A sufficient defense kept the Nazis at bay until the Americans arrived.
Throughout the Cold War, Arterians actively tried to help East Germans escape to West Germany and the Arterian River "More taxes outweigh the costs" said the king. The Arterian River launched its first spacecraft in 1989.
The Arterian River has since made great strides in technology, producing many electronic devices. (IE this is a modern tech very slightly future tech nation).
The Arterian River is highly industrialized, with a booming High-Tech industry. The valley is also highly fertile and much wheat is produced there. The Kingdom has remained a Kingdom, although now the king has a people-appointed advisor.
The Kingdom became a United Kingdom in 2004, creating the states of Arterius, Cologne, New Arterius, Celebesa, and Africanus. These states have limited self-government, like the states of the US.
The Kingdom has a warm climate year-round. The culture is pretty much modernized latin, we still hold to some customs of the Roman Empire.
