The Spoils of Peace: A Modern Piracy RP

OOC- This piracy RP is a character-based RP, so focus more on your individual characters and their development rather than on major tactics or anything like that. Other nations are welcome to join in on this, we'll need pirates, as well as regular nations that have their merchant vessels attacked and must attempt to catch the pirates. We'll be using modern tech, so the pirates will have attack subs or destroyers or something of that sort (but not aircraft carriers or anything ridiculous). I'm going to be a pirate, just for fun, however this does not mean that Unum Veritas is backing the pirates or endorces piracy in any form.

The Gauntlet was one of the most technologically advanced ships in the world. A nuclear-powered surface warfare ship, its state-of-the-art sonar and radar systems enabled it to hone in on almost any target on the high seas. It had modern GPS technology, as well as satellite communciation gear, which was rarely used. Under normal circumstances a vessel of this caliber would have flown the flag of an advanced nationstate, but not this ship. The Gauntlet belonged to an eccentric billionaire whose nationality was unknown. Mr. Cody Sterling had bought this ship shortly before faking his own death and disappearing into the underworld. There Sterling mixed with countless criminals and vagabonds before resurfacing (sorta) with a crew to command the Gauntlet. He had retrieved the ship, given himself the title of Captain Sterling, and had commenced attacking unarmed merchant vessels. Occasionally plundering the shipwrecks, his main purpose was to deny their treasure to their respective nations. No one really knows where the Gauntlet makes berth, nor where it purchases its munitions, but its mere presence in the Caribbean [where else? lol] has forced some nations to begin having military escort for all merchant vessels traveling in the vicinity...

And now the rest of you pick up.

OCC:Who hoo! Pirates!

IC: The Ravea merchantship Radient sped through the Caribbean seas, carrying a supply of Precious Metals heading to Ravean ports. Piracy had been high, and Ravea had lost a few ships to pirates in the last year, so the Government had outfitted Radient with Gatling Guns and a salvo or Rockts, and a group of milatary personell had been assinged to the ship.

Gerrard Gougeon looked over the blue Caribbean seas nervously, but confident in his ship. They had already outrun pirates twice, and wernt ready to be attacked anytime soon.

"Captain! We've got a Ravean flagship speeding up and about to cross our path," one of the radar operators reported.
"A merchie or a military vessel?" Sterling inquired.
"Merchie, sir. Probably lightly armed, but appears to be unaware of our presence."
"Excellent, wait until its just past our entry point and then advance."

Five minutes later the Ravean ship sped past the opening of a cove from which the Gauntlet proceeded to exit from. The stealthy design of the ship gave it something of an advantage as it closed the distance between it and its prey.

"We have radar lock, sir. Torpedo tubes one and two filled and open hatched. Missile salvoes three and four are tracking."
"Fire both torpedoes."
"Aye sir, firing torpedoes one and two."

Two Mark-50 torpedoes sped out of their tubes, using the radar lock provided by the Gauntlet, and towards the unsuspecting merchant ship.

Radient's Radar Operator, Bob Biggsy Biggums, nearly fell out of his chair as he saw a pair of red dots flash on the screen.

"Captian! Weve got trouble! Torpedos coming at us!"

The captian groaned and started issuing orders.

"All gunners to thier stations! Deploy mines! Full speed ahead!" Various crewmen dropped hi-explosive mines. Gerrard took the wheel and tried to manuver away from the Torpedos. By some amazing luck, one of the Torpedos slammed into a mine and blew sky-high. The 2nd torpedo slammed into the rudders, completely demolishing them. Men in the engine room were blown apart, and the engines themselves were shot.

"Fire all weapons!" Screamed Gerrard. A half-dozen rockets and 15 gatling guns began to fire on the pirates

"Sir, they're disabled, one of the torps hit the engines," a young woman reported, "Should we board, or just sink them?"
"We're also receiving some return fire...vampires! We have rocket launches from the merchie!" a radar officer said rather loudly.
"Flank speed. Rush in before the missiles have a chance to deactivate their safety mechanisms. They won't be able to damage us." Sterling said quickly.
"But sir, that'll move us within range of their guns," a young officer protested.
"I'm well aware of this fact Mr. Walker, however those guns are far less lethal than missiles or rockets," Sterling then turned back to the rest of the crew, "Bring the AEGIS system to full-automation and have it take those missiles out of the sky ASAP. Prepare a boarding party using both the RIB's (rigid inflatable boats, like the SEALS use) and the helo. I want them armed with the H&K MP-10's and under orders to shoot to kill. These merchies aren't trained fighters and won't know what hit them."
"Sir, they might have military escorts aboard,"
"True. Warm up the chopper and send it over. Lure the soldiers or crewmen onto the deck and then cut them down. Meanwhile have the RIB's on their way. I also want a missile on standby to demolish the ship at any sign in the change of fortune." the Captain ordered.

The chopper on the back of the ship began turning its rotors, as snipers and gunners loaded aboard, while assault teams, many with special operations training, geared up and loaded aboard the several RIB's on the rear launch deck. The helicopter, a HH-65A Dolphin specially outfitted with more "offensive" weapons and computer systems" lifted off just in time to provide its passengers with an excellent view of the AEGIS system firing missiles and blasting the incoming rockets out of the air. Without rockets heading towards it, the ship turned broadside, now just within range of the Ravean's gun, and began returning fire. The several guns aboard the Gauntlet fired towards the other ship and the two traded fire back and forth for some time. At this time, however, the Dolphin was swinging back and forth over the deck of the transport ship, harassing its crew and trying to draw them out into the open, while the RIB's quietly sped towards the merchant vessel.

"All Soldiers, report to the armory! Repeat, All Soldiers, report to the armory!" Soon there were over two dozen armed men ready to fight.

The captian watched, crestfallen, as the rockets were blown out of the air. He cursed as he heard a noise above him. Gerrard looked up as he saw a helicopter sweep down on his ship.Crew were cut down. Morale started to fall. Men started to die. "Someone bring down that helicopter!" Shouted Gerrard over the din of battle.

A pair of Royal Soldiers raced across the deck with a rocket launcher. As the rest of the crew looked on, the men loaded the rocket and blasted it at the chopper. It missed. As a result, both men were killed. Things were getting desperete now.

There was more trouble ahead. "Captin! Weve got RIB's heading straight for us! They're about to reach us!"
"Bring them down!"
4 Gatling guns swivled and started firing on the boats heading towards them. Two gunners were put out of commission by the Helo, but the other two sucsessfully brought down a boarding boat. The victory was short lived, however, as Pirated exited thier boats and leapt onto Radient's deck. Men turned in the direction of the new threat and started to fire on them, bringing down several of the pirates. Almost all the men were armed now, even the crew, with a variety of automatics, rifles, and pistols. Even those without guns found use in heavy wrenches, hammers, and axes.

The deck battle had started, but Gerrard knew that it wouldnt be long until the crew of Radient was brought to thier knees. Most of the crew was unskilled in the art of fighting, and there were far too few soldiers left. Gerrard himself was armed with a sniper rifle, dual pistols, and a wide-bladed saber.

Two more men went for the abandon rocket launcher on the deck. They got as far as loading it before they were killed. The launcher was thrown into the air as the men fell to the ground. Before any of his men could protest, Gerrard dropped his rifle and, dispite all dangers, ran across the deck. He caught the rocket laucher before it fell, rolled, and fired. The rocket sped straight into the pirates, creating a large and very bloody hole in thier ranks. The other pirates fell back behind cover and continued firing.

"Fall back to the Bridge!" Shouted Gerrard as he dove for some cover, dropping the rocket laucher. "I repeat, Fall back to the Bridge!!!" The crew and few soldiers that weren’t dead retreated under cover and raced to the Command Bridge.

"Shit!" exclaimed one of the communications officers monitoring the radio calls coming from the boarding party. The helicopter was achieving its goal, but the RIB-based assault team was suffering. First they lost an entire boat and now half of them had gone down from a single rocket shot. The number of available targets was also running thin, as the remaining crew of the Ravean vessel retreated to the bridge. The officer looked around, trying to find who he should relate this to, but Captain Sterling was out on the deck, overseeing the gunnery crews. Fortunately Lieutenant Harker, the ship's first mate and a quite attractive female, was in the CIC. Nearly every male aboard the ship had, at one time or another, made a move on Harker until one had gone so far as to try to "cop a feel". That poor guy had spent several months with his arm imobilized, trying to regain control and feeling in that limb.
"Lieutenant Harker, the Ravean crew is retreating to the bridge of the ship, according to the assault party, which has suffered several casualties," the man said timidly.
"Excellent," Harker responded with a sly grin, "Have the assault elements on board pull away from the bridge and begin searching the rest of the ship for any crew members and its cargo. Any living crew members are to be shot, except for high-ranking officers, which are to be taken prisoner if possible. Now, about this retreat, order the Dolphin to use its rockets on the bridge once they've barricaded themselves in."

Harker was not known for her subtly, nor for her benevolence.

ooc/ fun, pirates, pirates with submarines are better. I'll take a modified, large, civilian sub. It will be equipped with:
1 small nuclear reactor (how much power would be acceptable for this, it should be about a quarter of what a typhoon class submarine generates)
2 forward torpedo tubes, standard size, equipped with mk50 and mk82 torpedoes (mk50 are normal torpedoes, detonating on impact with a target, mk82 are 'smart' torpedoes that detonate directly below a target, ripping it apart).
2 aft torpedo tubes, mk50 and mk82.
20mm retractable deck gun, a 20mm autocannon in a retractable casing, retracts within the hull during subsurface travel to reduce noise and drag, comes up from the hull and is ready to fire in aprox 20 seconds.
2 7.76mm machineguns, actaully, only 2 small holes with covers are present on the deck, when the sub surfaces 2 crewmen can quickly set the gun up.
4 missile pods, reloadable pods carrying 1 missiles each, these missiles can be deployed from below 30 feet of water and can be equipped with SAM, SS or anti-ship missiles.
crew of 45, if someone could give me some help with an aprox size for this thing i'd be very helpfull
twin electric waterjet drives (use an impeller to push out a waterjet, uses more power and is bigger then a normal propellor, however at low speeds it is much more silent and it is capable of much higher top speeds /ooc

*Captain flapjack sped up to the command center when the sonar officer reported 2 surface contacts, they where travelling at 30 feet depth and the radar officer reported 1 helicopter airborn only moments later*

me: where are those contacts

SO (sensor officer): they're less then 100 meters apart sir, 2 miles dead ahead. the first appears to be a warship tough i'm not picking up any active sonar, the second is a merchant ship but it's been damaged and is taking on water, there are several rubberboats in the water as well.

No1: target practice sir, both ships are at a standstill, i suggest torpedoeing the warship with mk82's then plundering and sinking the merchant, our cargobays are kinda empty at the moment.

me: very well, load tubes 1 and 2 with mk82's, load missile tubes 1 and 2 with SAM and tubes 3 and 4 with anti-ship missiles, bring us in to 1 mile from the warship, all ahead 1 third, silent running, bring us up to 15 feet and up scope

helm: aye sir, all ahead 1 third heading 240, silent running

CE (Chief Engineering): silent running confirmed sir

TO (Tactical Officer): loading torps and missiles sir

TAG for detailed response later...

Also, this thread is for any modern pirate RP, so it doesn't have to just be focused on where the first two ships are, it could be an entirely new scenario.

As the last of the crew poured into the Bridge, Gerrard shut the steel door and locked it behind them. "Command Crew, report!" He shouted.

Several people came forward. Out of his origanal 9, only 5 of the command crew were left alive. Kern, the chief engineer and a giant of a man, was the 1st to arrive, eqipt with a rifle and a bloddy axe. Next came Merri Brondyke, the dark-skinned captian of the gaurd, carrying an Uzi. Hannah, the golden haired navigator, and the Radar operator Bob Biggsy Biggums, arrived together, both carrying pistols. Last to arrive was Jantico Ivener, the ship's priest, with a shotgun.

"Im thirsty for more blood," Growled Kern. "I want some action!"
"Patiance, friend." Said Gerrard. "First we need to fortify this postion."

Various crewmen began carrying boxes and tables across the room and placed them in front of the doors and put them in front of them for cover.

"Ah, captin?" Said Bob. glancing at the radar. "We have a sub near our position."
"Damn! Well, we cant do anything now. Just keep fortifying. And check on our supplies!"
"Yes, sir!"

"The Dolphin reports the crew of the merchie has barricaded itself inside the bridge," a comm officer reported with a slight grin on his face.

"Excellent," Harker replied, "Give the order to fire."

"Aye, ma'am."

"Uh, Lieutenant Harker, I'm getting a faint sonar contact South of us. It could be a sub, but if so then it just went silent."

"Damn, get the captain in here!" Harker snarled at a teenage member of the crew loitering about, "Sonar, firm up that contact immediately and get a bearing and a lock for torpedoes."

"We can't ma'am, the contact just disappeared."

"Well then use active sonar!" Harker said patronizingly.

Five minutes later Captain Sterling strode into the CIC, where he was informed of the situation.

"Alright, so the majority of the Ravean crew is probably dead by now and our primary assault team has suffered heavy losses but are currently combing the ship? Send in one more RIB team to augment the existing force and have this one bring scuttling charges with it. Now, about this sonar contact, do we have any hard data?" Sterling said patiently.

"Aye sir, we do. We just went active and it is definitely a sub, probably an attack sub. We've loaded rear torpedo bays 1 and 2 and missile salvos 2 and 3. All munitions report they are tracking the incoming sub," a sonar operator reported smartly.

"Any idea whose sub it is? A nations or private?"

"Most likely private, its too small to be a nationstates', but it is most likely armed."

"Great, probably another pirate group, poaching on our territory. Fire the missile salvos and as soon as you've heard whether the chopper's mission was a success or not, send it after the sub as well," Sterling ordered and was met with a chorus of "Aye's!".

Immediately thereafter five anti-submarine missiles were launched from each of the salvos, all of them going active the second they hit the water. Due to a mechanical glitch, one of the missiles veered wildly of course before sinking to the bottom of the sea harmlessly, but the other 9 began honing in on the advancing sub.

"Sir, the missile torpedoes have been launched at the sub and rear torpedo tubes are loaded with wire-guided fish," one of the weapons techies reported, "Even if they somehow survive the missiles, there's no way they could escape from two wire-guided torps."

"Good, but if they aren't a nationstate, then they must be some sort of renegade, meaning they could be profitable to us. Communications, patch me into the open guard frequency," Sterling ordered.

"Aye sir, the guard frequency is open now."

"Unidentified submerged contact, this is the Gauntlet. You have been identified as a privately-owned attack submarine and your actions have caused you to be deemed hostile to this vessel. Consequently, as I am sure you are already aware of, 9 anti-submarine missiles have been launched at you. You stand very little chance of surviving this attack, but even if something miraculous should occur I have two wire-guided munitions tracked in on your position. Should we be forced to use these weapons you and your crew will almost certainly perish." Sterling paused here for dramatic effect.
"You were probably unaware of this, but when you passed the cove three miles to your south, you entered into the Gauntlet's territory and we do not look kindly upon infractions on our territory. However, I am going to offer you a chance for your survival. If you leave this territory immediately, agree to fly under my flag, and give me 25% of your takings, then we shall carve out a territory of your own and kill our missiles that are currently headed for you. What say you?"

The crew and soldiers of Radient waited for something-Anything-to happen. But only silince continued. Gerrard could see restelessness in hos men.

"Perhaps we can go outside now?" Asked Bob timedly.

In that instant, the roof of the bridge caved in and exploded. Rockets tore through the hull, blasting apart metal and men. The boxes they had been piling moments before now barricaded thier only exit to saftey, a 1-inch thick steel door.

"Everyone, get out! Out!!!" Yelled Gerrard. Crewmen franticlly threw boxes and tables aside to get to the door, but it was taking to long.

"Step aside," snorted Kern. His charge carried him through the remining boxes and knocked the door off its hinges. A dozen crewmen, 17 soldiers, and Gerrard and his crew poured out of the door, shooting any Pirates on deck. Gerrard looked up and searched for the Helo, but it was no were in sight. They were safe for the moment.

"Merri, take some soldiers and fight your way to the Comm room. Bob, Hannah, you go with her. Have bob send out a distress call." He turned to the remainder of the crew. "The rest of us are going to secure that cargo! Lets go!" Gerrard, Kern, and Jantico, along with the rest of the men hurried to the hatch to get to the cargo hold.

*Captain flapjack stood, the periscope down, as the other ship closed slowly, growing from a tiny dot as it was now*

SO: the warship has just switched to active sonar, it's flooding its aft 2 torpedo tubes.

No1: it appears they've noticed us sir, but surely they wouldn't be as stupid as to show they're aggressive but not move.

SO: they're indeed not moving, looks like we're dealing with someone that's either in trouble or just plain stupid, shit, it's launching missiles, 9 of them, heading our way

TO: firing AA missiles to intercept theirs, opening forward torpedo tubes

me: fire torpedoes, all ahead full, hard to port, CRASH DIVE

TO: Firing torpedoes

SO: they're still not moving, i have torpedoes in the water, 5 missiles made it through, 1500 yards and closing sir, our torpedoes are heading out, they're 1500 yards from target.

Helm: All ahead full, hard to port, crash dive, aye sir.

*with that the ship lurched heavily forward as not only the ballast tanks where completely flooded in an instant but the ship's angle is suddenly dropped to 45 degrees down, sending the small sub towards the bottom and its crush depth at quickly growing speed as well as giving any torpedoes a very hard time to track*

SO: shit, thermocline layer, i've lost all contacts, i've lost the torpedoes sir

helm: 250 feet and dropping sir, should i level us out?

TO: our torpedoes should be 500 yards from the target now.

SO: still no torpedoes, they should be at 250 yards now, looks like they missed us. I'm still getting the warship's active sonar, but it's scrambled to such an extend that even if they're still seeing us, they'll be seeing something very different.

me: all stop, level out, balance the tanks and reload the tubes and missiles, deploy a sonar bouy to the surface

TO: sonar bouy away sir, surface in 3 seconds

ooc/ for those that don't know, a crash dive means pointing your sub down as much as you can and flooding your ballast tanks, in WW2 it was a much used tactic from submarine commanders to try and evade depth charges, unfortunately those subs couldn't go very deep (200 to 300 feet) Current subs rarely do a crash dive, but if they would they'd be able to go way deeper (some subs can go down to 5000 feet), a thermocline is a layer of water where the tempature changes a lot, this makes sonar detection competely impossible, a sub sailing below a thermocline can't be detected from the surface with normal sonar arrays /ooc

OOC- I've never heard of a submarine with the ability to launch missiles that can intercept other missiles from below the surface, especially considering that would mean adding radar to your sub to even know that the missiles had been launched in the first place :?

"Captain Sterling," a comms officer said, "the assault team has secured the comm room aboard the Ravean transport and reports that destruction of the equipment is under way. The helo launched its rocket, but reported seeing survivors before moving off to target the sub. Other assault elements are roaming the ship and the last RIB you ordered just unloaded its team."

"Very well, how about that sub?" Sterling replied.

"Well, using some sort of miraculous, never-before-heard-of technology, they destroyed some of our missiles in mid-air and dove below the layer. They're probably planning or launching a counterattack, wait....transient!" the sonar officer yelled, "Torpedoes in the water, headed for our position!"

"Launch countermeasures, activate the Prairie Masker system, steam forward and evade," Sterling calmly ordered before asking, "Did they ever reply to my request?"

"No sir, although I think this attack might have been a good indicator of their response," the comms officer replied sarcastically.

"Thank you Mr. Bellingsworth, that will be quite enough! Disrespect from my subordinates is not appreciated nor tolerated as you are well aware of." Sterling replied icily.

"If they send an actual reply to my request let me know, if not continue under present orders and destroy the sub."

Gerrard and his crew jumped down the hatch and slid into the cargo hold. There would definetly be many pirates down here, looting Radient's cargo. But there was no one there.

"Something's wrong here."

At that moment, a score of pirates leapt out of various hiding spots. The two groups fired upon each other mercilessly. Gerrard threw a grenade.

"Take cover!"

As soon as the blast had started to disperse the pirates, Gerrard caught sight of Jantico, the priest, walking in thte direction of the pirates.

"What are you doing?" Yelled Gerrard.
"Getting one step closer to god," remarked Jantico camly.

Jantico dove straight into thet pirates, who were regrouping. The holy man blasted several down with his shotgun, then whipped out his sword and slashed at a pirate.

"Run! Ill hold them off for as long as i can!"
Gerrard nodded. "Lets go!" They dove for the hatch and closed it.

"We cant do anything about the cargo now. Next lets get to the rocket salvos. We're going to suprise those pirares."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merri and her group were close to the comm room. They had only met a few pirates along the way, and had taken them out eisly. They were almost at the door when it slammed shut. More than a dozen pirates surrounded them, guns ready.

ooc/ it's called detonating missiles in mid-air. As to radar, most subs are equipped with radar, but can only use it if they're close to the surface, my SO told me you launched missiles, he knew where they where and heading, thus you can launch and detonate those missiles in their path, next, please remember those mk82 torpedoes have a large warhead and that your ship will take time to move, to even start moving, tough evading the torpedoes should be possible as they're in unguided mode (no movement=no propeller noise=no targetting for torpedoes) but your decoys will do you no good /ooc

*flapjack stood on the bridge while the SO waited for the sonar bouy to pass the thermocline*

SO: we're back, the warship has powered up engines and is trying to move, it also launched decoys, their torpedoes are gone though, no sounds whatsoever and there are explosions and gunfire on the freighter.

me: what about a helo, can you hear a helo anywhere?

SO: negative sir, there isn't any helo to be heard, at least not close to the water or near either of the ships. But why?

me: there was a helicopter pad on the back of that warship, there wasn't a helicopter in the small hangar, so it must be airborn, tactical, launch both SAM missiles and set for active search, all targets, let's see if that helo is close to us, helm, plot a course out of the area, 1 third ahead, keep us under the thermocline.

TO: missiles away sir, reloading tubes.

Helm: aye sir, heading out of the area at 1 third ahead sir.

OOC- I know missiles can kill other missiles, I just have never heard of a submarine with the ability to launch such missiles while submerged, and I definitely know that SAM missiles can't be launched while under the Thermal layer. Also, as I already stated, I have a Prairie Masker system on the Gauntlet meaning that the engine noises are masked and provide little opportunity for a torpedo to acquire them. The decoy will just add to a torp's confusion, thus rendering it practically useless. Also, are you going to answer Sterling's request or not because if not then I have to work something else into the plot.
26-01-2004, 12:25
ooc/ launching missiles from underwater simply means pushing them up in a water-tight casing, then when it surfaces, it launches from said casing. I can launch from below the thermocline, but the missiles will be unguided untill they acquire a target themselves, your stealth system is all nice, but there isn't any good way of reducing propeller noise without either losing the propellors or running very slowly. Since we didn't have any engine noise when i launched the torps, they're set for magnetic detonation and unguided mode. In other words, they remain at the depth they're at, heading straight forward and detonate when they get close to your ship. And no, i don't feel like answering the hail of someone that shoots first and asks questions later /ooc

One problem with your last post Ravea, you must have missed mine or something:

"Captain Sterling," a comms officer said, "the assault team has secured the comm room aboard the Ravean transport and reports that destruction of the equipment is under way. The helo launched its rocket, but reported seeing survivors before moving off to target the sub. Other assault elements are roaming the ship and the last RIB you ordered just unloaded its team."

OCC:Post edited.

IC:Gerrard and his group ran to the rocket salvos on a raised platform on the deck. They wernt loaded from the last time they were fired. The crew started to push rockets into the tubes.

"Captian.......look! We've got problems!" Yet another group of pirates had boarded the ship. They were currently roaming below, but were bound to see Gerrard's men soon, certianly after the rockets were fired.

"O.K, we've got to do this quitely," wispered Gerrard. The men started creeping around the deck, silently loading the rockets. Kain took that exact moment to sneeze, dropping the rocket he was carrying. It rolled off the platform and landed on the head of a pirate, knocking him out.

"That worked." Said Kain.

About 30 pirates started taking potshots at the crew.

"Or not."

The rocket tubes, numbering 12, were only about half loaded. It would have to do. Gerrard pointed the rockets at the pirate ship and launched half a dozen rockets at it-but he left one rocket in its tube. He then turned and fired the rocket at the pirates on board, hoping that he wouldnt blow up anything important. The rocket swerved and landed behind the pirates, blasting some forward and huruling some into the air.

"Attack!!!!" The whole of Gerrard's crew surged forwards to combat the pirates still on thier feet.

*Aboard the Gauntlet*

"Sir, we just picked up some sonar noise. Apparently the sub is leaving after firing it's torpedoes, which ought not be a problem. We left the decoy where we were and are now relocating to the other side of the Ravean transport. If the torps don't go for our decoy then they ought to hit the merchie before they hit us."

"Excellent, now where's our helo?" Sterling asked.

"It was just on the rear deck refueling and rearming, but its about to take off again," the flight operations officer reported.

"Good, have it go back to the merchie and give our guys some help," Sterling ordered.

"Aye, Captain."

"Wait, sir, we've just got launch signatures from the Ravean transport...." a technician reported before being interrupted by a lookout ontop of the superstructre,

"INCOMING ROCKETS!"

"Engage the AEGIS system! How many are coming in? Give me full speed," Sterling rapidly said.

"AEGIS system engaged and tracking the inbound sir."

"We've got about 6 incoming vampires."

"If we go full speed, then the Prairie Masker system won't operate as well as it should and we're prone to the torps in the water, sir."

"We've got no choice, activate the decoy now and go full speed! And order the helo to take those damn rocket launchers out! And then get our guns within range of that damned ship!" Sterling growled.

*Aboard the Ravean Flagship*

The boarding party was caught off guard by the sudden Ravean onslaught and quickly lost their position aboard the deck of the cargo ship. The initial rocket launch into their ranks had startled them and then the onrush of the Ravean crew broke their ranks. The pirates scattered throughout the cargo on deck and attempted to take cover while trying to return fire. Several pirates got on their radios calling for any of their friends onboard the transport to come to their aid.

The first positive sign they heard was the sound of rotor blades swooping in low over the ship and then the sound of its machine gun going active.

SO: "Sir, massive engine noise beyond the merchant ship, 4 seconds till our torpedoes hit but that ship is gone."

Me: "damned, send torpedo activator signal and current target location, fire aft tubes and bring us up to 30 feet and check the noise levels, we don't want to be heard AT ALL !!"

Engineer: "Noise levels near 0, we can go up to 1 third power without generating more noise then a single Tuna fish would sir, that is, if our TO would stop shooting so much."

TO: "Launching tubes 3 and 4, torpedoes away, impact in 8 seconds and counting, activation signal to torpedoes 1 and 2 sent, they're now in passive sonar mode and have found target, impact in 3 seconds and counting."

No1: "let them dodge that, may i suggest turning us the hell around sir?"

me: "negative, DO NOT TURN."

Helm: "Rising sir, 20 degrees up angle, 30 feet, all ahead 1 third."

*In the water the 2 previously launched torpedoes suddenly lurched to the sides, diving down deeper and passing underneath the unsuspecting merchant ship to head straight towards the enemy ship, their propellor noise being masked by the merchant ship untill they came out on the other side, dead on top of the enemy ship*

The situation near the comm room was very tense. Merri, Hannah, and Bob, along with just under a dozren soldiers, were bieng held at gun-point from a group of angry pirates. There was no way into the comm room.

"I think its time to give up now, women!" Merri was struggling against her captor, a short, sqaut ugly man. Suddenly, the boat rocked back and forth. Merri heard an explosion, and at least 4 of the pirate's radios were going haywire and calling for help aboard the deck. Several pirate left the room to help thier comrades. "Blast!" Said the short man, who had slipped and twisted his ankle on the floor. Merri took this oppertunity to pick the man up by the hair and swing him around in a circle, thenn flinging the hairy ball into the pirates. Several collapsed under the wiegt, while Merri's soldiers started to break free of thier capturers grip.

In a few moments, the solders were behind a pirate-wall; a dozen pirates were bieng held just as they had done to the soldies. The crew advanced, and the pirates held thier fire, not wanting to mow down thier own comrades. Merri flicked out her hand, and her soldiers flung thier captives at thier brothers. The crew surged forward and proceeded into hand to hand combat. Merri pulled a boot knife from her heels and started to sink it into pirate stomachs.

The fight lasted about 5 minutes, with no shots fired. The soldiers had been carful to disarm the pirates before hitting them. In the end, only Hannah was left fighting with a tall, yellow-haired man, who was winning. He grabbed hannah by the shoulders and held a knife at her throat.

"What now?" snarled the man. Hannah had always been more of a lover than a fighter, so she spun around and locked her lips with his. His grip weakned, and she took the time to hit him "Below Decks" and slammed his head into the wall, knocking him out.

Merri nodded. "Lets try to get to the comm room, see if there is anything left of it. Lets go!" The soldiers headed down the hall to the comm room.

OOC- Give me a break guys.... And Remmonlands, I do believe you have the most technologically advanced torpedoes ever, so I hope you won't mind if I match that and fire some of my own that are basically impossible to dodge.

"Sir, the fight aboard the Ravean transport is too confused to make out, however we have cavitation noises coming from that submarine. Two transients are headed towards us. I repeat, we have two incoming torpedoes."

"Fine, I'm sick of this sub. Prepare to fire two of the supercavitation torps, (for more info, see below) but before firing patch me in on the Gertrude sonar phone," Sterling ordered.

"Aye, captain." Sterling then picked up the phone and broadcast his voice into the ocean for the sub to hear.

"Submarine attacking the Gauntlet, this is Captain Sterling of that ship. First of all I would like to apologize for firing the first shot against your ship. We are in the midst of a boarding and, as you can imagine, things are a bit tense up here above the surface. Now, perhaps we can come to an agreement and end this wasting of perfectly good munitions. However, if you choose not to partake in my offer then you should be warned that I have two supercavitation torpedoes loaded and tracked in on your vessel as well as two homing torps, depth charges, and three ASROC missiles. It doesn't matter how quiet you are, my sonar went active a long time ago. Chance are, unless you call your torpedoes off, my ship will be destroyed, but I assure you that my very last act will be to fire all of our munitions at you just so you will die with the rest of us. Now, the choice is yours, but I urge you to make it quickly..."

OOC- Supercavitation torps, if you don't already know, are kind of like jets are in air. They move so fast that an air bubble forms around them, enabling them to move extremely fast and remain practically invisible on sonar. You would stand very little chance of evading one of these and basically no chance of avoiding two.

"Sir, the fight aboard the Ravean transport is too confused to make out, however we have cavitation noises coming from that submarine. Two transients are headed towards us. I repeat, we have two incoming torpedoes."

ooc/ some minor problems tough, first off all, supercavitating torpedoes can't maneuver, so generally only subs launch them not to mention the airbubble around such a supercavitating torpedo makes it extraordinarily noisy, not silent, you also have 4 incoming torpedoes, namely 2 i just launched and 2 that where already coming towards you, in addition my sub is still behind the thermocline and thus invisible to your active sonar. Have fun dodging those torpedoes tough, they won't go faster then around 20 knots so you can probably outrun them, and just so you know, i didn't hear your transmissions thanks to said thermocline layer /ooc

comms: "More movement and explosions and they've just opened their aft torpedo tubes sir, their sonar is active, we should remain below the thermocline."

Helm: "We're in the thermocline's edge now sir."

Me: "take us back down a little, keep us 6 feet under thermocline and continue towards that warship, keep us at 200 yards from it and close all torpedo and missile launch tubes, minimal signature, they might have sonar bouys even though they haven't deployed them."

Helm: "Make up your mind, going back down to 6 feet below the thermocline and continueing at 1 third ahead sir."

Tactical: "Tubes closing, countermeasures still ready sir."

Engineering: "Any more quiet and we'll make negative sounds sir."

The fast 5CN attack frigate, the CNNS-674 Liu Bang, sped through the waters at 23 knots per hour. On a routine transfer from the 5CN Magistrate Islands to the Isochronous naval base at Hong Kong, the Liu Bang was one of the latest generation of frigates, sacrificing speed for increased weaponry, firepower, and armor.

As it sped through the water, its long-range sensors discovered a freighter sitting not moving in the water eighteen kilometers away. As this was extremely unusual, the frigate changed course, and began to move towards the stopped freighter. As the frigate accelerated to 37 knots, the Captain called General Quarters.

The blaring of the klaxons called up all the personnel aboard the vessel. Soon, the frigate was ready for battle.

(OOC: Remmonlands, depending on where you are in the thermocline, Unum Veritas could theoretically find you, depending on the abilities of his radar. If his radar is sensitive enough, Unum Veritas should be able to detect your submarine.

Now to the supercavitating torpedoes... Theoretically they are unable to manuever, but I've heard of and read of instances in which they have been able to do so, albeit only limitedly... The main attribute about these submarines is not its manueverability but its speed (+200 knots in some cases...))
24-02-2004, 19:35
ooc/ yes, but firing a supercavitating torpedo that moves in a straight line aft, while i'm at least 150 feet below the surface and coming in on his side, isn't of much use, even with limited maneuverability the torpedo would be completely incapable of turning to face me and even more incapable of targetting me /ooc

Comms: "Second surface contact incoming for behind sir, they're coming it at 37 knots and they're making 1 hell of an ungodly amount of noise sir, i just hope they won't ram our sonar bouy because would mean we'd need to launch another 1."

me: "25 degrees port rudder, level out and keep us under the thermocline, reduce power to 1 8th and remain in silent mode."

Helm: "25 degrees to port aye, power to 1 8th aye, estimated speed is around 6 knots, turn completed, rudder centered sir."

Engineering: "Okay, now breathing would make more noise then our engines do, so keep your breath will you?"

ooc/ On another note, there is no radar below water, only sonar and that bounces right off a thermocline in active mode and barely penetrates in passive mode, seeing as how a small fish right above the thermocline would already be causing more noise then a nuclear Los Angeles class moving at 1 third ahead below the thermocline, or at least, that's what you're hearing, your best bet on detecting me would be to lower a sonar bouy or towed aray to below the thermocline, but that would severely limit your speed and most sonar bouys and tower arrays are passive only and like i already said, the electromagnetic drive i'm using is a lot more silent then a conventional drive, making my power supply and life support the most noisy part in the sub /ooc

(OOC: Right, sonar... slip of my hands, when i wrote radar... And my frigate is pretty far away, even if he's moving at 37 knots)
25-02-2004, 20:01
ooc/small amounts of noise, such as your engines at low power, can travel hundreds of kilometers underwater, large noises such as your engines pounding away at full throttle, combined with hefty cavitation behind your propellor can travel across the atlantic, so your distance from my sub is small enough to allow for detection with sonar/ooc

OOC- Your sub could be heard. I was at a standstill, I believe somewhere I'd dropped sonobuoys (but maybe not) and I've already mentioned that I have a towed-array deployed. The supercavs are not very maneuverable, but they can be deployed out of the tube and programmed to wait until a certain depth before initiating, thus they could simply be dropped out of the torpedo tube, sink to about the level of your sub (of course it wouldn't be exact) and then be told to engage. Now also, let me get this right Remmonlands, 5CN's ship is pretty far away and you can hear him, yet you can't hear my message when we are so close? That sounds kinda like a double-standard. Also, I looked up your sub-launched anti-air missiles. There are no such things. The most a sub has is anti-submarine missiles which float to the top, engage their engines, and then drop back into the water. These missiles are used as a long range stand-off weapon, but submarines cannot engage aircraft, their only tactic is to dive deep and evade. Now, I'm trying to keep from destroying both our vessels with my transmission, so it might be worth your while to answer it. Keep in mind that I still have wire-guided torps and homing torps loaded as well as several anti-sub missiles in onboard silos.

the Vermilion Pagoda and the Jade Mountain, two assault cruiser catamarans, sped through the Carribbean. While Islandian ships were rarely seen this far west, the ships, a Hunter pair from the Forty first Surface Engagement Group, were on a shakedown cruise around the world. they were destined for the Islandian military's base at Quang-ti, also home to several special warfare groups and an anti terrorist warfare school, so as a result, they were carrying two detachments of Islandian Navy Special Forces (Sea Dragons).

"Multiple contacts," the sonar operator called out. "Profiles match Five civilized nations ship, submarine, a merchant ship, and an unknown vessel, very likely a merchantman."

"SOS signals all over the place, ma'am," teh communications officer reported. "Originating from merchantman."

"What other ships are in teh vicinity?" Captai Kyouyama asked. The shapely young captain stood at her command station, coolly noting the impending situation. She had been a veteran in nearly every major conflict EI had fought in since 2000 (in NS time, about ten years ago).

"Do we have allied ships in the vicinity?" Kyouyama asked.

"Agrigentian, ma'am," the navigator replied. "And a sub pair from Wolfpack Three Six Two."

"Call them up," Kyouyama ordered. "Get the Sea Dragons up and ready; we may have need of their...services."

According to globalsecurity.org there aren't any, and that's what I base most of my info off of...

OOC- EI, just a piracy RP. I'm RPing a modern-tech pirate frigate (with a helo) that was attacking a Ravean merchantship. The merchant is almost dead, but then a Remmonland sub came up and, out of nerves, my captain fired on her first. So now the sub and my frigate are exchanging shots while the merchant just kinda floats there. I'm not quite sure what 5CN is going to be doing.

"Torpedoes in the water!" Sonar yelled. "Inbound toward Remmon frigate."

"Respond," Capt. Kyouyama ordered. "Fire up the Type 500 launchers and hit the pirates. Get the Sea Dragons ready; this is their last warning, and I'm going to have them fly by it. Tell Jade Mountain to fire them up and get their attention towards them as we launch the Sea Dragons."

Kyouyama keyed her comm. "Get up boys," she ordered. "You're going into the thick of the fighting."

"Yokai," the leader, a stocky Japanese Islandian by the name of Hara, replied.

The blades of the Agrigentian made Sea Hawk helo began to turn, as the Sea Dragons slid on in full assault gear. Ziplines were attached, and the helicopter's six Celestial Swallow Air-Air Engagement Missiles were prepared quickly.

The helicopter lifted off and slid over hte waves towards the ships as the Jade Mountain fired up a thick smoke screen around the area and did its best to jam all communications.

In case other helos or aircraft would interfere, SAMs were armed and prepared, and more cruise missiles armed.

Gerrard's attack left the pirates beaten and bloody. They retreated to the far side of the ship, recovering and planning.

"Captian, we're not making much progress here." said Kain. "What do you think we should do?"

Gerrard thought for a moment, then it came to him. "The boats! The pirate's RIB's! We could commendere those and try to bring the battle to the pirates."

"A boarding party?" said Kain doubtfully. "I suppose its an option....what about that helicopter?"

"I'll think of something. Lets go!"

A hand grabbed Gerrard from behind. He drew his saber and swept it up to chop it off. The blow was blocked with the sound of metal on metal. Gerrard looked up to see Jantico, the ship's priest. He was quite bloody, but weather it was his or pirate's gerrard couldnt tell.

"I thought you were dead!" said gerrard in amazement.

"Obviously not," responded Jantico curtly. "Lets go." Gerrard shrugged and started in the direction of the RIB's. The party helped themselves to a pair of the boats, and sped off quickly in case the pirates came back.

"Lets hope we get to the pirates before that heli gets to us," Thought Gerrard.

Merri and her crew finally broke thier way into the comm room. They looked around to see what could be salvaged. nothing but a few radars were functional.

"Damn!" muttered Merri. "What are we supposed to do now?"

"Wait," said Hannah, the navigator, who was looking at one of the radar screens. "Look!"

Merri wastched as two small objects departed quickly from the vessle they were now standing in.

"Thats either pirates going back to thier ship, or its gerrard with a raiding party."

"What are we waiting here for?" Demanded Hannah. "Shouldn't we go and se if we can help them?"

"Yes, we should. Up to the deck!"
