OOC: Had to have a ridiculous title so people would look at it!
Secret IC:
The Dodekistan Research Institute is conducting research on a new kind of highly effective sniper weapon system. It is called CPSW (copper plasma sniper weapon).
The CPSW works on roughly the same principle as shaped charge warheads. The shell consists of a thick brass casing surrounding a very small amount of HMX high explosive. In the front of this round there is a cone made of relatively thick copper/lead alloy. When the explosive is set off by the hammer of the gun, the explosive detonates, liquidizing the cone, and thrusting it out of the barrel at roughly 5000fps. Once inside the barrel, the jet is controlled by a magnet trap which keeps it from touching the side of the barrel, and allowing it to form an aerodynamic shape while it is still under the control of the magnet trap. The muzzle velocity will be about 5000fps.
It is equipped with a 15 power digital scope with laser rangefinder. Adapters can be mounted to utilize generation 4 night vision/infrared equipment (nighttime use is not recommended because the molten jet will act as a tracer giving away the snipers position). Battery power for the scope and magnet trap is provided by a lithium ion battery placed below the barrel which provides power for approximately 200 shots including scope.
The chamber of this weapon is a highly precise bolt action with 6 bolt lugs. It is constructed of the highest grade stainless steel.
In flight, due to the very high velocity, the trajectory will be exceptionally flat, allowing high degrees of accuracy. Additionally, due to its liquid state, the slug will become increasingly aerodynamic as it goes along until it hardens. This also contributes to its accuracy.
The basic idea behind this weapon is for long range, highly precise targeting of human and lightly armored targets. Once the CPSW system is operational, plans call for smaller, lighter, fully automatic versions for special operations use.
