Spenser was sitting in his office with his feet up on the desk in their normal position. A small radio next to him was quietly putting forth some great, if slightly scratchy, jazz music. Occasionally the foot pumped along with a rhythm, but for the most part was lazily still, clad in one off-white Top-Sider.
The office was small, only one desk and chair, and two client chairs facing that. There was a window that looked down onto a not-busy side street, and commuters could be seen walking back and forth on their way to that big meeting. Most of them clutched Starbucks coffee cups as a drowning man might clench a life preserver.
The front door was frosted glass, and said simply Spenser, Investigations. Being a private detective had its moments, but it also had it’s downtime. As Spenser looked at the empty client seats, he heard a noise in the small corridor outside. Footsteps walking toward his door, and stopping in front of them. A slight hesitation. A knock.
“Come in,” Spenser said, taking his feet of the desk.
