The Journeys of the Far-Searcher (sign-up thread)

OOC:
Okay, I've had this idea bugging me for awhile now, so I decided to run with it. Basically, I'd like this to turn into a series of shorter roleplays within a much longer storyline. Essentially something similiar in scope to the Illiad- several shorter stories loosely tied together, an epic tale sort of thing. I'm also hoping that the unusual nature of this story will draw in people that I don't normally roleplay with.
So.... some background, I guess. In the Valley of Dragons (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=68203&highlight=) storyline, there is a character by the name of Najoedo, who is all but outright stated to actually be the "Far-Searcher"- the central character in an epic poem/story/thing that dates pretty far back in the Shogunate's history. He is one of the "Keepers of the Goddess Blades"- he is the oldest of them, actually. Between 10,000 and 2,000 years prior to the Shogunate's present day, he went on a very long journey of enlightenment, visiting many lands and learning a great deal. (And, more likely than not, having some impact on the lands he visited.) He is extremely skilled in 'The Arts'- magic, psionics, etc, to everybody else, and certainly stands out in a crowd, no matter which form he's using. (At the time of Valley of Dragons, his rather large white dragon form has become his 'real' form. At the time of the Journeys, his Keeper form- looking like a cross between a human and a dragon- is his 'real' form).
So, curious as to what's needed to participate? Either post the following to this thread or send me a telegram (and please, put some thought into it!):
1) A brief description of your nation- or the lands that would eventually become your nation- as of the time the Far-Searcher visits (between 10,000 and 2,000 years ago). Specify if they're a fantasy-based mystic society, slighty mystic, non-mystic, etc. Please keep in mind that most of the stories will be roleplays between myself and another player, rather than a group. (Unless a bunch of people playing share a border and want to go for a group thing, like some regional conflict that might be brought to an end or soemthing.)
2) A brief description of the people at the aforementioned time period. Also tell me what named characters are going to be involved. Be sure to specify if it is allowable for them to be killed and/or maimed horribly. (For the record, Najoedo is obviously a no-kill, since he has to survive to the present day, but he can be harmed, sometimes grievously.)
3) This is a big one: Give some very careful thought as to the impact of such an unusual (and powerful) visitor. Would such a visit live on to the modern day in obscure mythology, or might it actually have a hand in getting your nation from Point A to Point B? (For example, a long ongoing war being brought to an end, a cult forming, or some major change to the landscape?)
Just some other notes concerning this story:
-It's not going to be future or even modern tech- it's anywhere from 10,000 to 2,000 years ago, for crying out loud! (And if your nation had advanced tech back then, yer probably some alien offworld extrasolar nation, so you wouldn't be on Earth that long ago! =p Tough cookies!)
-While the stories center around Najoedo, I'd like this to be more about the ancient lands he visits, and the people that inhabit them. In other words, about YOUR stuff. Which is why I want you, to steal Cog's trademark line, "Think about it for a moment."
Aaand... long winded stuff all done, sign-in is now open! ^_~

Im in to. Lemme just write first :P
You've got me hooked :) And now, a brief hostory of Drakwald... (a fantasy nation of sorts)
Drakwald hasn't changed much in your alloted time span. It's a big scary forest, full of darkness and horror, always has been, and probably always will be. Near the center of the forrest sit a rather large, towering, jagged mountain range of five or so mountains. The people are referred to by outsiders as "beastmen." They're mutants, an interesting blend of man and essentially goat. They live in a warrior-dominated tribal society, which fight amongst themselves for the best living areas and raiding routes. They routinely attack the human settlements that pop up outside the forrest, and more often then not eat their captives. They have two nominal "overlords", however, one being the Bray Council, that being a council of six of the eldest and most powerful Bray shamen, who in turn bow to the other, Nek'cal'ar'zrr, or Daeron as he calls himself in the presence of outside mortals, the Daemon Prince of Drakwald. At that time, he'd likely still be in his original body, and would likely be the one to meet your guy, and probably try to eat him or something. Actually, this could be a good oppertunity to explain how Daeron originally died. Anyway, cheers. Look forward to this. :)

*curses the fact that he's from another solar system*
Sounds like a good opportunity to develop Rhinara's ancient history! Just so you know, modern-day Rhinara is all human with an (OOC) influence from the Roman Empire, with advanced tech.
Four to three thousand years ago, however, there was barely a human population. It's a typical fantasy realm, drawn from the ancient Roman/Greek myths as well as the more modern elf/orc fantasies. There are a lot of flatlands that grew into fields of tall grasses, as well as sizable forests, tall mountains, etc. Most landscapes could be found in Rhinara.
Of course, "Rhinara" didn't exist back then. Rather, the lands were full of settled, tribal, and migratory groups, composed of centaurs, satyrs, dwarves, pixies, etc. etc. etc. While the red dragon has become the dominant dragon species in modern Rhinara, there were many other types of dragons back in those days. The human population were among those who were migratory, living as hunter-gatherers as they were often chased away by another, more powerful race. Perhaps with some help, they would come to start city-states that would eventually band together to form the empire that would lead to the Dominion of Rhinara...
If you're interested, I'll draw up some more details.

Sounds good- Najoedo's elder form is a giant white dragon, though 'white' doesn't quite accurately describe the milky crystalline appearance of his scales.
*giggles girlishly* This is gonna be fun! =D
So, when do we start?
(Oh, and a bump ;))
Danneland
15-01-2004, 11:58
1.
Danneland, 10.000 years ago.
In the early days of Danneland, nothing but a vast wilderness ruled these lands and few humans dared to walk in it.
But as mankind evolved, they took their first steps into these wild and cruel lands. They explored from the south to the north, and one day they reached the foot of Danneland mountains. These high mountains reached for the sky and the top dissapeard somewhere beond the clouds.
At this time, (2000 years before the Far-Searcher) man kind had build a great kingdom in Danneland wich was ruled by the Gromstill dinasty. Magic was a known tool for everyone. A child in school was both taught mathematics and magic. Everyone knew how to use it, and everyone did.
But then a man namned Maaz rose from nowhere, a dark magician who had summoned creatures from abyss. Orchs, Trolls, Goblins..
And so the first great war started, man took their swords and shields and ran into battle. The great war waged for a long time, some 1000 years of battle between man and orch in Danneland went on, during this time magic was more and more forgotten. It was more important to come up with new warmachines and weapons. Steel was what was the main objective, and Danneland mountains was allmost drained of its ore.
The tunnels went deep into the mountain, and there they found what the dwarves called mithrill. It was not mutch, but enough to forge a sword. And so the kingdom did, the finest smith in the kingdom forged the sword, it took exactly 7 days and 7 nights, on the morning next day, the sword was givven to the king.
It was called Malacin the sword of the mountain.
And with that, the king lead his armies into victory. The orcs and trolls were slain, the goblins were executed and the dark wizard was hung.
After that day, magic was stricly forbidden in Danneland. Anyone practising this art were executed at once.
And at this point (during the time of the Far-Searcher) everything that is about magic is unknown. Well, not everything. The kingdome has invented various tools and machines to counter the magic. Sensors that detect if magic has been used, and such things.
Machines and steel is what Danneland is experts on. And nowhere in the world one can find such great swords as in danneland. Even the Dwarves are amazed by what Danneland produced, though ofcourse. Dwarven smiths are the best in the world, therefore many dwarves work in Danneland as smiths.
2. At this time the king is namned Georg. And there is also the AMP. Anti Magic Police wich is more of a intelligence agency than a police.
If magic has been used, they will find out, and execute this person.
The one in charge of this is Malcem who's grandfather fought in the great war.
Then there is the Baron Grimm who is quite known to be intrested in the art of magic. Though, no one dares to take him out since he, is next to the king the most powerfull man in the country.
And the word is, that he is planning to overthrow the king and make the magic legal agian.
All characters can be killed.
3. If The Far-Searcher would come into Danneland during this period, he would probably start a war between Grimm nad King Georg

Five Civilized Nations
15-01-2004, 20:59
History
10,700 years before the creation of the Five Civilized Nations (BCCN), the ancestors of my people lived in a group of volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific known today as the Treaty Isles. At that time, a small maritime empire known as the Treatise Empire flourished. 10,689 BCCN, the Treatise Empire was at its zenith, its control spanning over much of the Pacific. But as it expanded, its empire became increasingly overstretched. With the power more and more decentralized, the Emperors of the Empire began to grow disinterested with their rule and formed a powerful cult, known as the Gems of Azshara. The members of the cult worshipped the Goddess of the Islands, Azshara, while the majority of the population worshipped the Goddess of the Seas, Rolsk. Finally one day, the last Emperor of the Empire, Jeremiah Assad, disgusted with the worshippers of the Rolsk banished them from the Treaty Isles and ordered all ties with the outside world to be destroyed and limited the Empire to the Treaty Isles. Three years after the banishment, Azshara appeared to Emperor Assad and with a mighty blow obliterated Assad's body. Then methodically, Azshara destroyed the remnants of the Treatise Empire. Thus the Isles passed out of history, until rediscovered 10,500 years later...
But, a group of survivors managed to escape the disaster. Led by a man named Taqwa (in the old language of Chokaboska, "the price of freedom"), a worshipper of the War God Talisk, the survivors fled east...
Character
All my characters except Taqwa can be killed.
Name: Taqwa
Age: 35
Height: 6'
Weight: 156 lbs.
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Green
Bio: Taqwa became disenchanted with the worship of both the Sea Goddess, Rolsk and with the Goddess of the Isles, Azshara. In his study of our gods and goddesses, Taqwa discovered the name, Talisk, an obscure god, whose was the God of War. As the Treatise Empire was built around exploration and treaties, war was not necessary. Taqwa began to gather a group of followers. When Emperor Assad discovered Taqwa's offense, Taqwa and his followers were banished. Luckily enough, just before Azshara struck. Taqwa led his followers to a small island in the middle of nowhere, known only as Magistrate Island.
During his years of study of Talisk, the God of War, Taqwa attained the ultimate enlightenment of the Art of War. Through his studies, Taqwa became the Primero de la Guerra (Spanish for the First of War).
Powerful Visitor
Taqwa would ultimately assume that the appearance of Najoedo as a manifestation of Talisk, the God of War. He would see Najoedo as something like the "Mouth" of his God and would reverently abase himself before Najoedo.
But when Taqwa discovers that Najoedo is not really the "Mouth of Talisk," Taqwa will try to kill Najoedo. In anger, Taqwa will depart the Magistrate Islands with his followers and found the city-state of Azaka, based around the worship of Talisk in what is now the Five Civilized Nations.
Ah, should I give a general overview of the Black Swamp back then? Very well.
Basically, they live in subterranean caverns, or in deep caves. Machinery is quite primitive; basic wheel and pulley kind of stuff. The bow is a recent tech breakthrough, as well as spears made of iron.
Tribal Law is the name of the game, as the Sakkrans are split into 15 different tribes, each a separate political entity of its own. Some are far larger than others depending on their success in their territories.
The Black Swamp is basically how the name desribes it; a very dark, steamy, humid swampy land. Savannahs, wetlands, marshes and forests also make up the ecosphere of primitive Sakkra.

Very cool stuff! ^_^
I suppose I ought to follow my own instructions and give the description of my country 10,000 years ago and all that, huh? =p
The Shogunate 10,000 years ago:
The land that would ultimately encompass the Shogunate and its northern colony, Aquamarine, was sparcely populated by several nomadic tribes- The Pegasii, the Drakonic, the Nekoite, and the Amahira. At about this time, a series of wars broke out between the clans, as they were transitioning from hunter-gathers to a more civilized society with permenant cities.
Legend has it that the Goddess Shimeki charged a swordsmith the task of creating the twelve Goddess Blades, and that when the task was done, She blessed the weapons with Her power, so that those who used the weapons for an extended period would be changed in form and would serve as Her warriors. Those became the Keepers, with Najoedo being the first. The Keepers served whichever tribal leader they wished, and helped stoke the wars that lead to the early dynasties.
Society was largely gender-equal, and most warriors adhered to a strict code of honor comprable to that of the Japanese samurai. (A code which exists to some extent to the modern day, as evidenced by Firefury Amahira's war against the Nekoa Empire- her goal was to eliminate the puppetmaster behind the Empress, with the idea that she was helping the Empress, rather than trying to overthrow the government.) Regional variations existed between the clans, depending on location and traditions.
Najoedo is a Keeper, however, he was not raised a warrior, and is barely adequate at swordplay. In his 'Keeper' form, he stands at roughly six feet in height, with deep black-blue colored eyes and close-cropped dark brown hair, save for a long thin ponytail in the back. His face is perfectly human, save for the tiny pair of slightly curved horns placed above delicate looking fin-like ear structures. His body is covered in milky white scales from about the stomach down, and has a lithe tail. The human similiarities cease at his legs though, which more closely resemble a raptor of some variety, with three toes ending in wicked talons. He also sports a pair of large milky white colored wings, and sunlight seen through the thin membranes gives them an opalescent effect. Given the difficulties in getting dressed when a tail and two wings are thrown into the equation, he is more likely than not to be found completely nude. (Despite running amok in nothing more than his birthday suit, like all the male Keepers, his genitals are not visible. Whether this means the Keepers are sterile or if said equipment is somehow hidden is unknown.) As of the beginning of the epic, he is some 150 years old, though it wouldn't be known just looking at him.

Ofcourse they are, all machines are like behemoths, and I should add that Danneland has discovered steam technology, not on that level that it can produce trains. But more like power these.. well, huge machines. The machines themselves dont do anything else than bring water to the city through pipes and that kind of stuff.
War mechanics are still limmited to ballistas and catapults, though they are very good ;)
On the other hand, Danneland citizent are very resistant to magic.

With any luck the Sakkran arc in the main thread will be wrapping up in the next week or so ^_~
I'll post something about one of my countries as soon as I decide which one would be best for this and have time to right something up about it.
Dar-Kavryn is a definite possibility....
If you don't mind saying, what are Najoedo's motives, standard methods, phiosophy, etc.? I'm asking to try to figure out what effect he might have on the history of my various nations.
(Varyd Dolzin is a nation I use primarily to keep track of threads I'm involved in, since I RP with a number of nations. This is a rare V D post that's more than a fancy tag... This nation is, therefor, the one that is the best representation of my nations as a group.)

Oh, yes... and a bird flies by overhead.... :D
At this point in the storyline, Najoedo's still pretty young (at least as far as the Keepers go- 150 or so is very young  ), and he's been in enough wars in his own homeland that he's gotten quite the knack for it, but has seen enough of it that he tends to view it as a necessary evil. Basically a pacifist who can and will kick some ass if he needs to. (In other words, poking the funny looking dragon-man is not a healthy idea =p)
He's only just recently left his homeland, so he's confused and trying to sort out his place in the grand scheme of things, since the life that he knew has been rather yanked out from under his feet. He has a thirst for knowledge, and at least a vague working knowledge of how to be polite.
He's going to grow and mature over the course of the roughly 7,000 or so year span of this storyline, so how he is will vary- nearer to the middle of his journey, he'll have lost a bit of his idealism and be more dedicated to gaining knowledge, and nearer to the end of it, he'll be much closer to how he appears in the Valley of Dragons storyline- very old, very wise, and only violent if he absolutely has to be. Right now though, he's mostly just lost, trying to figure out what he's going to do with himself while he tries to get a grasp on what's happened to him.
Hope that helps! ^_^
Dar-Kavryn
27-02-2004, 11:04
Yes, very useful. I think this will be the best of my nations to use....
A "brief" history of Dar-Kavryn:
10,000 years ago, the land that is now the Kingdom of Dar-Kavryn was, technologically, much as it is today. The biggest innovation since that time, technologically, has been the introduction of the crossbow. This is because of high levels of viridium, a rare mineral with the surprising effect of disrupting technology, that are present in Dar-Kavryn's soil.
Politically, however, there has been a major transformation. In the early history of the area, Dar-Kavryn was populated by a number of societies, each with a separate government. Most of the many species that inhabited the area were somewhat isolationist, and many considered the others enemies.
Then, as now, the most common inhabitants were the donari. These beings are basically human, the primary difference being that long exposure to high levels of magic has led to the development of a natural shield, its strength primarily dependent on the physical and mental ability of the individual. These were also the most open and friendly; they were welcoming to visitors, and built towns in the open where others could easily come. It was a basically feudal society, with each town controlled and protected by a lord or knight. Farming was common, but some villages were still based on hunting and gathering, and all tried to live in harmony with nature. (This was for safety, not philosophical values or extremely anachronistic foresight).
The brownies were probably more numerous than the donaris, but their small size made them less noticeable. (If you've ever seen Willow, you'll know what I'm referring to; I basically used the brownies from that movie, though they aren't exactly identical.) There were a number of tribes of brownies; they occasionally feuded, and occasionally worked together, but they usually avoided each other. The donaris always remained neutral in these conflicts, and had a long-standing truce with all tribes. The brownies usually formed communities in the deep forests. Surprisingly good climbers, they most often built their homes in trees.
Third most common were the degral. These beings looked basically human, though their proportions were different (most noticeably, longer arms), and their facial features tended to be angular and harsh-looking (think trolls). The degral have arms and legs decorated with an odd collection of runes, signs, and symbols; unlikely as it seems, these are natural markings rather than tattoos. Their eyes glow and change color; this is a certain indication of the degral's emotions. They lived in several rather wild towns, built in thin forest on hilly terrain. It is well known, to those who are familiar with them, that degrals, as a race, are psychologically incapable of choosing to help that which they consider evil (though their opinion of this is not always the one commonly held), and the donaris have entered a tentative alliance with them. Degral are known for their ability to wield a weapon in each hand as easily as most people use one, or more so; though they lack the shield, they are far more dangerous fighters than the donaris. These warlike skills arose primarily from their long war with the shadowdancers.
Shadowdancers are one of the most enigmatic, and certainly one of the most dangerous, races in Dar-Kavryn. Their slender build (so much so that most of their bones are visible through their skin) gives them a skeletal appearance; the average height is about eight feet tall. They are much stronger than they look, and amazingly fast. (I define the speed of a shadowdancer as the ability to strike one blow with a sword for every note in a fast-paced piece of music.) They make a strange black metal, usually referred to as shadowdancer steel, which they use for both swords and bows, as well as what tools they use. Shadowdancers almost always live in caves. They have the ability to move through solid materials, especially stone, as if through liquid (complete with splash marks). Related to this ability are the facts that they do not need to breath, and see with a different form of energy than humans. They sometimes glow yellow in dim light or darkness. Omnivorous, they forage for food at night. It is considered certain, indisputable fact that a shadowdancer will never, under any circumstances, run from an enemy; this is part of their religion/code of honor. Intruders are usually killed, but the brave are usually spared and they have been known to help those who earn their respect. A few mages have learned strange spells from them. The brownies are free to come as they wish into shadowdancer territory.
There are a number of varieties of intelligent dragon in Dar-Kavryn, most of whom consider any edible non-dragon valid prey. A few, however, have been known to interact peacefully with people, and they all generally remain in the depths of the wilderness. Strange creatures of living stone dwell in the highest mountains, and there are small numbers of many other strange beings. Most of these interact rarely with the others; they generally have good (if infrequent) relations with the donaris, though not always with each other.
---------------------------
Then came the invasion... at some point in the history of Dar-Kavryn (the exact time isn't set), a new power entered the land. This strange force was a deadly army, primarily made up of Vaxintorians, but led by several score of the D'zukaru, who actually made a deeper impression. The Vaxintorians are semi-shapshifters; they cannot change quickly, and have a few limitations (for example, they aren't up to imitating a specific individual), but adults basically decide what they look like. The average height is 8-9 feet. They have higher levels of magic, on average, than most beings (though a narrower range), and are physically quite strong. The D'zukaru are larger, stronger, smarter, and much more powerful. It isn't known if they are an elite form of Vaxintorian or simply another race that has many similarities, but they rule their army by force. D'zukaru can alter their forms quickly and easily, and have a much wider range than the Vaxintorians; many can, to a lesser extent, change size as well. Both groups are bloodthirsty and power-hungry; their goal is to take over as much of the universe as they can manage, and destroy anyone who stands in their way. This force arrived from another world, traveling by means of some strange portal. They had clearly prepared for their attack; they new of the divisions between the assorted peoples of Dar-Kavryn, and sought to take on one group at once. Somehow, despite the odds and the long-standing conflicts, the races managed to form an alliance that included the shadowdancers and even some of the dragons, and together they drove the D'zukaru and their Vaxintorian soldiers back through the portal, killing many of both. Legends speak of a stranger who helped to bring this alliance, which later led to the creation of a basically unified kingdom, together.
------------------------------
Important characters:
Dal Timkar
The most important leader of the donaris. He or his son must survive, since he is to be the founder of the Royal Line of Dar-Kavryn, first known ancestor of Taryd (the current king).
Karn Stormcaller
A powerful mage, and the leader of the largest tribe of brownies in that time. Most leaders were sorcerers, since those who work magic usually live much longer than those who don't, and therefore have more time to become wise. That's the theory, anyway... I'm sure he was not the leader because he could zap anyone who disagreed with him with lightning bolts. As his name suggests, his specialty is weather-related magic. Don't get him angry; he's got a rather bad temper. He's expendable, but I'd like for him to at least last a while. Brownies are fun! :D
Dral Kivor
The degral king. As king, he is the focus of all the magic of his people, so he's rather powerful (I haven't yet found an RP where I can get away with using the current degral king as an active participant; he's too strong.). Dral is expendable, but not an easy being to kill.
Ziiltran Devorgan
If the shadowdancers had a leader, she would be it. They don't, but most if them will obey if she commands. Ziiltran is both mage and warrior, and fairly skilled with both, but expendable.
---------------------------------------------
If I think of anyone else important I'll add them, but they'll almost certainly be expendable. Sorry my "brief history" was so long; I like inventing and designing settings. Does this sound all right? I figure Najoedo would arrive a bit before the invasion force, travel the area, find out enough about them to realize there's no real reason they're fighting, and be in position to convince them to unify when the common enemy gets there. If his arrival at so opportune a moment is stretching the odds to much for you, we can come up with some event that would draw him there and also trigger the invasion. Reasonable?

I thought of a couple more characters I should mention...
If my segment comes near the end of the story, I might use Borinta, a Kryntok Dragon. She's a bit over 4,000 years old at the current time. Since she's still alive, she would have to survive.
Also, there's the leader of the Vaxintorians, Varduk Myandariin. It is still the leader, and must survive, but can be injured quite severely.

Sounds cool =) I'm thinking since FCN is on vacation of trying to get things moving and run multiple storylines at once in the thread. The problem with that is just keeping it straight who's posting to when in the timeline.
