Ribenia offers permanent neutral ground
In a statement this morning, Her Royal Majesty Queen Ayane re-asserted Ribenia's long-standing military neutrality, and suggested a new role for the queendom to play on the international stage.
"The world as we know it is blinded and deafened by the unceasing explosions of war, its heart coldened by an unwillingness to respect the sacredness of human life. War has become a mere convenient tool for power, domination, intimidation, and a prefered means for settling conflict. Diplomacy has become the forgotten way.
We in Ribenia are saddened and horrified by the relentless bloodshed that surrounds us. War is not something to be conducted lightly. Its consequences are always horrific, destroying or scarring countless lives, both physically and emotionally. Its consequences span decades.
In an effort to offer an alternative to war, we have begun construction of a diplomatic centre outside the city of Kyeta. Here, we invite all those before whom looms the prospect of war. Here, on neutral ground, you may face your enemy... and talk. It is our hope that, through discussion, death and suffering may be averted, and lives saved. Any may come. All are welcome.
Thank you, and may you prove great leaders for your people."

"No one?" Queen Ayane sat up rigidly straight, a shocked look on her face. "No one at all?"
"No one, your Majesty," her adviser confirmed, a touch of sadness evident in his voice. He felt sorry for the young queen. She had obviously thought she could make a difference, save lives, talk some sense into the world. Share some of the compassion that had earned her the nickname of "Compassionate Queen" amongst her people.
She was young, he thought, and naive. She would learn one day that the world is too rough a place for people with ideals, even for those with royal blood and the love of a nation to support them. But he hoped never to see that day when the Queen lost her naivety. Her compassion.
Ayane dismissed him with little more than a whisper, and looked over her shoulder at Kazushi, her ever-faithful bodyguard.
"There are tens of thousands of nations out there," she said in a whisper tainted with horror. "Do they all favour war? Am I the only one who..."
Kazushi could see tears in her eyes. Without a word, he placed a hand on her shoulder and held tight...
The construction on the site was finished. As she returned home from having inspected it herself, Ayane had to admit, it was an impressive site. The buildings were tall, smooth, elegant, as befitted a location for international discussions. Everything was squeaky clean. There were quarters for guests, restaurants, all that could possibly be needed. It was, in essence, a self contained village.
Empty, for now.
She smiled slightly. Her earlier pessimism had all but faded.
The world hasn't blown itself up yet. Surely that means my hundred thousand or so fellow leaders aren't all genocidal maniacs...

Through the act of war the first of the blood of Taurain carved an Empire that inspired awe and jealousy amongst her neighbours.
Through war the People of our lands were unified into a single entity serving and served by the Taurain family.
Through war we broke the backs of kingdoms that opposed us in times past and ensured the safety of the People.
Through war we removed the barbaric monotheistic cults and sects that leeched on the People.
Through diplomacy we brought contentment and stability within our Lands.
Through diplomacy the many people that lay divided by belief and skin color became a unified People who upheld respect and honor for each other.
Through diplomacy the People came to know peace and stability.
Through diplomacy the Enduring Empire recovered itself into a single whole from the fragmened lands that were the result of the 'Nameless Prince' madness and cruelty.
We are a People through who the blood of warriors flows. We revel in Honorable combat and the thrill of a hunt. Daily are the brave men and women who enter the many Gauntlets where they engage each other in combat while wielding the knowledge of war, 'Mandaan'.
But we are not People who hunger for war. It takes more bravery to put down your arms in times when those around you let hear their drums off war and steel rings on steel then to raise your blade and cut in those who may harm you. We, the People of the Enduring Empire of Tarakalar acknowledge your bravery and your Honorable intentions.
While we will defend ourselves with the means of war if we must, and if pressed even take war to others, we none the less prefer the words of peace. As such should the time ever come, we hope we may use your diplomatic center when the drums of war echo through our skies but our hope for peace still resounds louder.
Arnaud Taurain.
Emperor of the Enduring Empire of Tarakalar.
Servant to the People, Bearer of the Moad'Kaan and Abann'at of Eratinel.
The Ribenese government acknowledges and respects your words of wisdom. We shall be ready to welcome you at any time should you wish to journey to our land and diplomatic facilities.
Through our joint efforts, hopefully, lives will be saved.

Dazed and more than slightly confused, Espio stepped off of the Boat. As emmissary for Shadostan, he was expected to set an example, but after being hurled around a cheap pleasure cruiser for several days, he was considerably the worse for wear. Shado had sent him in his stead, and Espio would always be proud that he had been sent instead of a more military man, or a politician. Espio was Shado's best friend, and although not human, he displayed an unnatural ability to make people warm to him, as soon as thay had gotten over the shock of seeing a six-foot chameleon. He wandered around the docks for a while, getting used to the climate and atmosphere of Ribenia. The air was just as clean, and the people seemed tolerant enough of his presence. He had been sent on a mission, and he would not let Shado down. He was the official Shadostanian emmissary to Ribenia.
He made his way by foot towards Kyeta, and the diplomatic centre.
Kazushi stood in the light, warm rain before the diplomatic complex, and watched as a tall, lizard-like being walked up to him. There was no mistaking the emissary.
“Shado is sending his best friend,” the Queen had said. “The least I can do is do the same.”
Kazushi walked up to Espio, smiled, and held out his hand. Only then did he pause to wonder whether giant chameleons were in the habit of shaking hands.
“Welcome to Ribenia, Emissary. I am Kazushi Sasagawa, representative for Her Majesty. We are honoured by your presence, and your commitment to peace and diplomacy. If you will follow me inside? Queen Ayane has re-arranged her schedule to be able to meet you within the coming days. She very much looks forward to it.”
It was the longest speech he recalled making to anyone but Ayane since… well, since his childhood, probably. He was usually her bodyguard, not her representative. But she had told him to make Espio welcome, and he would not let her down.
OOC: Could be useful.
One teeny, tiny, little problem, is that I have two governments, both intent on destroying the other.
Both your governments are most welcome to come to Ribenia and explore the possibility of a peaceful settlement of their dispute. We would be very happy to welcome them.
Espio approached thew man with a certain amount of curiosity. He did not seem the type to be welcoming guests. Nevertheless, he extended his arm and shook the proffered hand. He seemed welcoming enough, and showed no signs of hostility, which was good enough for Espio.
"It is both a pleasure and an honour to be invited, and I look forward to meeting the Queen intensely. Lord Shado speaks very highly of her."
He shook the droplets of rain from his leathery hide, and followed Kazushi into the complex, a smile forming on his face. Never had he imagined the Queen herself to allow him to appear before her! He could barely contain his pride. Shado had chosen him, of all people, to meet Queen Ayane!
President Chen read the telegram with intrigue. Although having never experienced war himself, he had a son in the ROTA and wanted him to come back in one piece.
He also thought about his previouc diplomatic meeting : an emergency conference on war plans. The meeting was attacked, and he lost a personal friend. A friend that was like a brother.
He decided to go. A reply was sent.
“And Her Majesty in turn speaks highly of Lord Shado,” Kazushi told him as they entered the complex. The inside of the building was as clean and new as the outside.
“You may reside here, if you wish,” he said. “We have large, well-furnished, comfortable diplomatic suites. I will remain until Her Majesty informs me she will see you, which, she assures me, should be soon. Have you any plans for making use of these facilities for peace talks in the near future?”
"With any luck, no." the chameleon smiled, "I was sent here by Lord Shado to remain here for as long as I am of use, and to aid Lady Ayane in any way I can be of service."

Mr. President,
Allow us to extend our condoleances for your loss. You will be very welcome in Ribenia, and we are glad your heart feels drawn to diplomacy and the avoidance of senseless death. We shall look forward to your arrival.

Kazushi had little trouble in finding Espio. The building wasn’t exactly crawling with people, although a school class was being shown round, its teacher explaining to them Ribenia’s commitment to peace and diplomacy. Kazushi smiled.
He knocked on the door to Espio’s spacious quarters, then entered when called. The emissary from Shadostan had been here two days now.
“Her Majesty wishes to see you, Emissary. If you are ready, we can leave immediately for the palace, in Nayalk, the capital city. We have no cars here in Ribenia, so we will be travelling by monorail. In a special diplomatic train, of course. The journey should take about two and a half hours. I hope this is convenient?”
The chameleon smiled. "It is more than enough that I will be granted an audience with her Highness, you needn't have gone to all this trouble for me! I would be just as happy walking, but if all is arranged, I see no point in waiting! Shall we?"
Following Kazushi out of the near-empty building, the children from the school class gave Espio many strange glances. He strode up to them, after asking Kazushi to wait a moment, and spoke to them for no more than a minute. He disappeared once, to illustrate his chameleonic abilities, and walked up one wall, across the ceiling and back down the other one. After another minute, the class waved goodbye and continued their tour, and Espio returned to Kazushi's side, smiling.
"So many people are hostile to me because of my appearance, but you can't judge people on looks alone."
Espio began to wonder what Queen Ayane looked like. Shado had told him many times of her beauty and grace, but to meet her in the flesh would surely be a sight not worth missing.
Kazushi smiled.
“Queen Ayane has told me Lord Shado has great wisdom. It would seem you share of it. Come, then.”
Less than three hours later, they were entering the royal palace in Nayalk; it glittered majestically in the late morning sun. Kazushi led Espio to the throne room. As they walked in, he wasn’t surprised to find Ayane alone. No guards, no attendants. He bowed slightly.
“My Queen, his Excellency Emissary Espio of Shadostan.”
Ayane stood, and looked at Espio, a gentle smile lighting up her face.
“Emissary,” she said in her soft voice. “Thank you for coming. I am honoured to meet you.”
 Oopsie! Double post!
Upon entering the room, Espio could do nothing. Barely remembering to breathe, he stood in complete awe of Queen Ayane. Eventually he remembered his manners, and greeted her in the traditional Shadostanian manner.
"May the moon light your way for all time, your Highness."
Beyond that he was speechless. Unable to say anything more, he made a mental note never to doubt Shado's stories which he had, until now, considered "flights of fancy".
Ayane smiled at him gently, and walked up to him.
“A most poetic greeting,” she said. “I would wish you the moon as eternal guide too, but somehow I feel it will never fail you. Come, Emissary, and we will sit and converse in the gardens. Kazushi, will you get us some refreshments?”
Kazushi bowed, and left the throne room. Ayane gestured for Espio to follow her.
“I have been looking forward to meeting you, Emissary,” she told him as they walked towards the gardens. “And let me thank you for sharing in our ideals of peace, negotiation, diplomacy. But first, tell me.” She stopped, and turned to look into his face, her eyes questioning and her heart beating a little faster. “How is Lord Shado?”
"My Lord is as well as can be expected...considering he is not with you." Espio smiled. "He was greatly pained to ever have been parted with you, but with regional affairs and all..." Espio bowed his head in reverence. "One of our friends, the greatest general Shadostan had ever seen, an honourable man with great skill, was killed in battle not long ago. Shado has gone to see the family of such a close friend, and he has then promised me," (and it was with relish that Espio told Ayane this) "That he will be joining us after the burial ceremony."
Ayane managed to remain calm and contain her excitement as she looked at Espio, only her eyes shining in an indication of how she felt. Espio’s words touched her, and she also felt her heart clench slightly at the news of Shado’s loss.
“My condolences,” she said gravely. “The loss of a friend, or any person one looks up to, is never easy to bear.”
They stepped out into the gardens, and she invited him to take a seat.
“But you also bring news that fills me with joy,” she added with a slight, gentle smile. “Seeing Shado again… He has been in my thoughts since the moment we parted. Your country, Emissary, is most fortunate to be blessed with his wisdom and his kindness. As am I…”
She smiled at Kazushi as he brought them drinks.
“To official business. As you know, our diplomatic facilities will always be open to you.”
Espio took a seat as invited, but declined the drink politely.
"This of course, is well understood by us, your Highness." The look on Espio's face became grave. "We have had more troubles than just death in Shadostan. A rebel group, loyal to one they call "Malign", has been founded, and they threaten to usurp Lord Shado. I heard last night that my Lord had had talks with this "Malign", and he plans to bring him here, with your Ladyship's permission, of course, to try to solve this potential disaster diplomatically."
Espio sighed, sadly. "Things are nothing like they used to be in Shadostan..."
Malign was new to this. He had never done "dimplomacy" before, since cutting the heads off of people seemed to work far better. But Shadostan was powerful, with many great warriors...
Perhaps a peaceful settlement between the two warring factions could indeed be found...
He boarded the boat headed for Ribenia.
OOC: Soon I'll post Malign with his new nation!
Ayane looked at Espio sadly.
“It grieves me to hear this,” she said with feeling. “Of course, Emissary, you may conduct diplomatic negotiations here. Anything Ribenia can do to assist Shadostan, we will do gladly. Measures will be taken to ensure the comfort and safety of both parties during the talks. There will be no more bloodshed in Shadostan if we can help it,” she promised solemnly.
"My thanks, your Highness. I will await further communications from my Lord as to his arrival, and that of Malign."
Espio looked up at the sky.
"I hope that you can fulfil your promise, your Highness...For the sakes of all Shadostanians..."
Aboard the S.S.Vernichtung, Malign waited. He had been told that a ship from Shadostan would be joining him by the light of the moon...
"Typical Shadostanian tripe." he spat, staring out at the horizon, watching the slowly setting sun. "I hope their boat sinks, that'll make this talking lark a lot easier."
A call from the look-out alerted Malign, and he spun round.
"What?"
"A ship sir! Shadostan scum!"
"Ahh..." Malign breathed, "They're early."
The look in Ayane’s eyes was solemn. “The people of Ribenia, and I most of all, will stand by the Shadostanians in their hour of need, whatever the nature of that need. My promise is sacred. And,” she added with just a touch of a smile, “as the Lord Shado and I once reflected, we should always try…”
She stood.
“I will show you to your rooms, Emissary, if you are willing. You are of course free to walk this land at leisure, and to call upon me at any time. Any friend and envoy of Lord Shado’s will always be a honoured and treasured guest in my home.”

A small boat was approaching the docks at a steady, manned by several men and women dressed in silky white robes rowing in perfect rhythm as they pulled and pushed on massive wooden oars which were about twice their size. The boat at a closer inspection was a ghastly one to behold since they were made of varnished bones, and gaping skulls at the edges. Standing tall and proud at the bow obviously was the leader. A large figure indeed, he stood a couple of inches above six feet, he had broad angular shoulders to revealing his strength, and was dressed in deep blue robes which were made of the same material as the others' robe. The sleeves of his robe was cut at the shoulders revealing his well tones muscular arms, and the light bronze tint of his skin. Though unlike the others he wore a mask draped over his whole head, with two holes for his eyes, and proudly imprinted on the face was their heraldic and holy symbol, the snake. His eyes, which showed that he was of asian descent, seemed as if it was never to blink, always straight, and focused.
Upon the docks, he stayed at the water's edge, making his presence known to the others, and waits for a host to welcome him to the newly created neutral grounds. He stood in a more relaxed manner as he held his rough hands, and rested them behind him as he looked over the water, absorbing the beauty of the scene. The others with him in the boat sat silently, awaiting orders from their master. Though they did this willingly for he was their road to salvation.
Their leader was there to follow the road to a better future.
Yoshi Shioda walked down the length of the docks to the eerie ship moored and waiting. The diplomat had been told what to expect, but it was still a stunning and rather unnerving sight to behold. He looked at the man who seemed absorbed in tranquil contemplation of the sea.
“Welcome to Ribenia,” he said simply. “Thank you for coming.”

"Thank you," he replied in a calm tone while he continued to look over the waters, "This place is magnifssscent."
His voice seemed highly distorted as if he spoke purely using his vocal chords as each syllable reverberated from his throat. A hissing sound which was very distintive could be heard each time he pronounced a word with "s", or something similar to it.
He turned his head to the side to look over the boat and hissed very distinctive sounds, words in their native tongue, and did it in a gentle yet commanding tone. Two of the eight rowers, stood from their seat, and left the small boat while the others stayed put, their faces covered with the shade created by their looming hoods.
He then turned and faced the diplomat, gazing into his eyes as he placed his fists right by his hips. He then bowed lightly to show some respect as his attendants stood by his sides, but still a step behind him and bowed as well.
"My name has yet to be mentioned yet since it is hard to pronounce, but I have decided to adopt a name that would be easy to say. I am Zuma of Steel Magnolia, I shall bear no title, and stand as an equal to everyone."
Though his words were noble, and honourable, it seemed that he was still above his subjects. Though he did not become their leader through fear, but through respect. They knew that under his rule, their country would thrive, and grow.
"I am sorry that I cannot stay to enjoy this, but I am needed by my people, may we skip ahead, and talk business?"
Shioda returned the bow.
“Of course… Zuma. I am Yoshi Shioda, diplomat for Her Majesty Queen Ayane. I assume you have come to see our diplomatic facilities so, to come straight to the point, would you like to disembark and see them, and could you tell me whether you will have need of them in the foreseeable future?”

"Please ssshow me these diplomatic facilitiessss, I do not want to take up your time, and your skillsss for it may serve a greater purpose than I."
Zuma was always the humble one, often placing himself beneath others. He was never the showman, but when time calls for it he will shine a thousand times brighter the sun. His manner of speaking was not the most eloquent, but what he tells you, and how he does it shows his charisma. He stood close to the diplomat with his hands tucked once more behind him, while the others stayed at his sides, waiting patiently for their attendant to take them around.
"There will alwaysss... be a future with Ribenia with such a welcome." His mask moved as he moved his mouth and as his breath escape through his lips as he spoke. "After all, I have come here to forge a friendss'ship, and not make war."
Espio smiled, thanked Ayane, and took his leave, promising to alert her of any communications he received from Shado. Walking back to his quarters, he heard a noise coming from within his chambers. Running in, he picked up the radio transmitter from his bag.
"My Lord? What news?"
The voice of Shado could be heard by anyone who was listening for it, as Espio had not had time to turn down the radio.
"Espio. We have met Malign and his bodyguard, and are proceeding to Ribenia. We will arrive in less than an hour. Are you ready?"
Espio turned down the radio, and replied.
"Yes, all is set. The facilities are at our disposal, and Queen Ayane eagerly awaits your arrival."
"As do I, my friend. It has been too long since I was last allowed to gaze upon her beauty. Is she well?"
"I believe so, my Lord, and seemingly will be the better for seeing you."
"I hope so..."
"No doubt, Lord Shado."
"I will see you soon, my friend. Malign will arrive before me, as agreed, and you will be there to meet and escort him."
"Understood."
"Be wary, my friend, he is not to be trusted."
"Thank you, my Lord."
Laying the radio back in his bag, Espio began searching hurriedly for someone who could tell him where to find Queen Ayane. Shado and Malign would soon arrive.
"Please ssshow me these diplomatic facilitiessss, I do not want to take up your time, and your skillsss for it may serve a greater purpose than I."

“We are honoured by your friendship,” Shioda said simply. “May it endure the passage of many years, and may you long continue to reign with such policies over Steel Magnolia. The diplomatic facilities are some way inland. I can take you there, or give you precise directions, if you wish.”
Ayane had returned to the throne room, and had been about to grant audience to an advisor, when she was informed Espio wished to see her. She postponed the meeting with the advisor, and instructed for Espio to be given immediate admittance.
She smiled at him gently as he entered the room.
“Emissary. What may I do for you?”
Espio bowed low, and upon standing again, said, "My Lady, I am eternally grateful for an audience on such short notice, and I will try not to take up too much of your time. I have just spoken with Lord Shado, and he has informed me that he and Malign are on their way here. I have been instructed to go to the docks and escort Malign to this centre, and Lord Shado will join us at his earliest convenience. These are dark times, your highness, and we can seldom afford to give our adversaries a second to think."
He hurried away after saying farewell, and went to the docks. He could already see the sinister shape of the S.S.Vernichtung on the horizon. He would be here in minutes. Espio tried to calm himself, but despite his training found himself panicing. He had had no idea he was to escourt Malign, let alone make sure he caused no trouble. Doing that would be a miracle in itself.

"Please, I would like for you to give me a tour of this place asss' we head for the diplomatic facilitiesss'." Zuma spoke in very strong yet humble manner with his head bowing slightly as he looked over the buildings he was seeing from the docks. "You may tell me directions but I think there isss' more to what I may see."
With his hands tucked behind him he took a couple of steps forward passed Shioda, and nodded his head in approval to the area. His mask wavered to the winds as he took his small strides, and stood tall as he absorbed the aesthetic beauty of the area.
"Yes, this place is very pleasss'ing. Can you also arrange a meeting with the master architect, and landscape engineer?"
Ayane watched with mixed feelings as Espio left the palace and headed back to the docks. This was Shado’s hour of need, and that of all his people; she longed to stand by his side and give him what support she could. As monarch of a explicitly neutral country, however, she would have to listen to the rebels, too. Her duty was to encourage both sides to come to a mutually acceptable compromise.
Shado was wise, and kind. He would do what was right for his people. Ayane took comfort in that…

Shioda tried not to stare as their guest formulated his request. He composed himself quickly.
“Of course, Zuma. I will arrange it. If you will follow me, I will… show you round. This area was in great part rebuilt about half a century ago, and has been modernised in recent years, but the waterfront heart dates back many centuries…” he began to explain.
Malign stalked off the boat, and stared around the docks. He had never been good with sea travel, and he was glad to be off the ship.
He saw Espio, and strode over to him, the chameleon nearly 5 inches shorter than his imposing figure.
"You'd be Espio, then?" he asked, "Shado said you'd take me to this place."
Almost disgusted by the sight of him, Espio replied, "Yes."
He turned and led Malign towards the diplomatic centre. He would try and get an audience with Ayane when he arrived.
Shado led Amaris from the hold, and off the boat. She had had a rough crossing, and would need a few days to recover, but she had been everywhere with him, and he was not about to leave her at home. He mounted her, and led her at a steady trot towards the diplomatic centre. It wouldn't be long before he got to see Ayane again... He had dreaqmed of that moment since he left her... He could hardly contain his excitement. He sent a rider on ahead to inform the Queen of his imminent arrival.
Espio ran into Kazushi as he re-entered the centre.
"Ah! Oh, goodness... I am terribly sorry... Ah... Could I ask you a favour? Malign has arrived, and Lord Shado is on his way."
At this point, a rider pulled his reins up and dismounted.
"Espio!" he called, "Lord Shado will be arriving in less than an hour!"
Espio turned back to Kazushi, and asked, "Could you inform her Highness? It would be wise not to leave Malign idle for too long, he has...destructive tendancies..."
Kazushi nodded gravely.
“I will see to it that Malign is shown to his quarters, and guards will ensure he reins in his… destructive tendencies. And I will inform Her Majesty immediately.”
When he returned, he seemed calm.
“Malign has been shown to his suite and is… behaving himself. Her Majesty is ready to receive him now, and he is being taken to her. When Lord Shado arrives, Queen Ayane wishes to greet him personally, and to converse with him a few minutes. Lord Shado will then be shown to his own suite and be given as much time as he requires to rest after his journey. Her Majesty will then preside over the initial stages of the talks between Lord Shado and Malign. Is that acceptable, Emissary?”

His mask wrapped along his face as the wind blew on it, outlining a normal human face. The edges of his lips, his nose, his eye straight cheeks, and his small rounded chin. His whole face seemed visible but only his eyes revealed the rest. He nodded his head to the diplomat as he was told of the place while his attendants just followed them a few steps from behind.
"Yesss', the docks are magnificent, and quite classs'ic. Like onesss' I've seen in galleries'. So rare are places like these, most are filled with warships, and tradeship which are like huge metallic floating islands."

"Most certainly." Espio bade Kazushi farewell, and went to Malign's quarters. He had been instructed to keep an eye on him, and so he would.
Shado rode up to the gates, and hailed the gatekeeper.
"Greetings, and may the moon forever guide you! I am Shado, Lord of Shadostan. I seek entry to the centre of diplomacy of your Queen, the radiant and ever wise Lady Ayane!"
Shado wearily dismounted, and stood before the gate. Dusty and tired from the journey, Shado still looked as he would have done when he last saw Ayane, and looked forward to seeing the woman who had stolen his heart.
"Yesss', the docks are magnificent, and quite classs'ic. Like onesss' I've seen in galleries'. So rare are places like these, most are filled with warships, and tradeship which are like huge metallic floating islands."
Shioda nodded.
"I know what you mean. We have got an army, of course, but... we try to keep some feel of beauty... pureness to these places. The historic centre of the town born from the docks is just down there... When would you like to visit the diplomatic centre?"
OOC: I'm sorry, I've been kept a little busy by real life... :(
The gatekeeper hastened to open the gate. He bowed in solemn greeting.
“You are welcome, Lord Shado. If you would like to enter, you will be shown to your rooms, where you will be able to freshen up. Her Majesty instructed that any request you may have will be met. And Her Majesty will be ready to grant you audience as soon as soon as you wish.”
Shado smiled. Rumours about Ribenian generosity were well-founded. He mounted Amaris once more, and led her inside. Then he headed for his quarters. In an hour or so, he contacted one of the staff members and inquired about gaining a private audience with Ayane.
Ayane tried to still the rapid beating of her heart as she instructed for Shado to be granted audience with her. She forced herself to stay calm as she sat and waited. She did not have long to wait.
The doors opened, and he stood before her. Shado. The man to whom she had, in a whisper, admitted that he held her heart...
Ayane rose, and took a step towards him.
"Lord Shado," she said softly. "I bid you welcome indeed to Ribenia." She looked into his eyes, and her heart thundered once more. She could not yet speak her feelings out loud; she was a head of state greeting another head of state, and had to act with proper decorum. But, in a gentle voice, she allowed herself to add, "You have been ever present in my mind. And in my heart..."
"And you in mine, my lady. May the moon forever light your way."
Despite the gravity of his situation, he couldn't help but have his spirits lifted, his heart at once sent racing by the sight of Ayane, the woman to whom he had pledged eternal alliegence. He sensed her inner turmoil, the conflict between her feelings and the correct decorum, and identified with it. He bowed low, and then stood, a grim look on his face. He had business to attend to, and would have to suppress his feelings until such a time as it was appropriate.
"I understand Malign has arrived. I hope he has not caused your royal higness any...trouble."
"He has not, Lord Shado," she replied, her tone still soft but equally grim. "It is my hope you and he may come to an agreement whereby he shall never trouble the people of Shadostan again." She looked into his eyes. "I grieve with you, for your personal loss and the turmoil you and your people face." Her heart ached in silence to comfort him. "But in Ribenia and in I you will always find support and friendship. Your wisdom has led you to seek a peaceful solution, and it is my deerest hope one may indeed be achieved. Discussions may commence as soon as you and Malign feel ready, Lord Shado."
"May I offer my humblest gratitude for this opportunity, m'lady. It is my wish to begin talks as soon as possible, for I wish not to have Malign loiter on your lands longer than is necessary. It may not, however, be possible to do so, as I have much to do before I will be prepared to have such talks."
Shado bowed low, and took his leave. It saddened him to see Ayane torn so, and he resolved to make this as painless a solution as possible, for both sides.
OOC: I'm going away for a whole week and a bit today, and I won't be able to post for ages, at least until the 30th! :( Feel free to control both Malign, Espio and Shado until my return. You can even start the talks, but I'll need to be there to resolve the situation! Really gonna miss posting to you! Speak to you when I get back!
Ayane felt as though her heart would shatter as Shado turned and walked away. He had returned to her for moments only. And now he had the weight of the world on his shoulders...
"I will stand by you," she whispered to the empty room. "Always..."
OOC:
I'll miss writing with you too. :( I'll wait until you get back; I prefer to let you write for your characters. Hurry back!
Ayane sat at the head of the long, heavy, beautifully decorated table, and tried to appear merely calm and dignified. The room was large and delicately furnished, conveying a sense of luxury while simultaneously designed to be soothing. Outside, a fountain sprouted water into a pond, a gentle, calming sound.
To her right sat Malign and his fellow rebel diplomats. To her left, Shado and his closest, most trusted followers. As Ayane looked at him, she wondered how she could remain impartial. Her heart ached for him...
Two Ribenese soldiers stood guard just outside the room, there to ensure everything went smoothly. Drinks had been brought in - non-alcoholic, of course, given the circumstances - and all necessary security measures were in place.
Ayane stood gracefully. She was wearing one of her most lovely, intricate, stately dresses.
"Lord Shado, Mr. Malign," she said, her voice gentle and solemn. "I would like to thank you for choosing diplomacy over bloodshed, for putting the lives of the Shadostanian people before all other concerns, and for striving towards a peaceful resolution of your disagreements. I suggest we begin by a formal statement of mutual grievances and requests."
OOC: Yay, I'm back! :D How've you been?
IC: Shado gave a faint smile, and stood.
"It has finally come to this. Such bloodshed would not have been seen since the Shadonian Empire split 50 years ago, had we not taken this course of action. I thank you for your cooperation, Malign. It will not go unnoticed by Shadostan. I would like to begin by offering immediate terms of cease-fire and temporary peace. We will have no blood shed on either side while these talks are carried out."
OOC: Hey! Welcome back! :)
IC:
Ayane smiled slightly as she listened to Shado, thinking again just how lucky his country was to have him.
And how lucky I am...
But she couldn't think of that now. She turned anxiously to Malign, hoping he would respond with reason.
As Shado returns to his seat, Malign stands, a grin slowly forming in the corner of his mouth.
"We of the Armed Resistance feel not need for conflict at this time. The cease-fire is accepted, and peace will be observed during these talks. I would like now, with her highness' permission, to state our terms and make our requests."
Shado grimaced. He knew these men would settle for nothing less than independance, and he was prepared to give them that. He was not, however, so sure that they would take their independance and remain peaceful. A lump in his throat told him that Shadostan would be once again split, and after the Great Civil War of the Shadonian Empire, Shado knew neither Shadostan nor the rebels would be in any state to defend themselves from attack. He had received a telegram earlier from his most trusted advisor who was currently running Shadostan for him.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Lord Shado,
It has been brought to our attention that Malign will push for independance. This, as we all know, was acceptable from the first, but there is something else you must know. Malign has begun gathering a force, and army to destroy, loot and burn. If a split occurs, we will not be ready to provide organised defence, and we will fall. I implore you, my Lord, to return soon. I have begun rallying the riders, but I fear we will be too late. Neither you nor I wish for bloodshed, but Malign seems to have his black heart set on it, so we must defend ourselves as best we can. You must return as soon as possible, for I fear Malign's forces will stop at nothing to destroy us.
Yours regretfully,
Dana
Ayane forced herself to give Malign a polite smile. She would have to talk to Shado later, find just how trustworthy the rebel leader was.
"Please, proceed with your terms."
Malign smiled, though it would better have been called a grimace.
"We of the Armed Resistance demand independance from the Shadostanian scum, and freedom from their weak and petty rule." he spat, his grin growing ever wider. He sat, and waited for a reaction.
"Please, Mr. Malign, could we avoid useless insults? We are here to discuss the legitimate requests of both sides, in a spirit of respect." She looked at him solemnly. "Don't you think?"
Shado watched as Malign sat, breathing deeply to try to calm himself from his outburst. Shado's face was as grave and solemn as he felt as he stood once more.
"We of Shadostan are willing to grant you your freedom, Mr. Malign. We ask only that you show no aggression towards us, and that the split between our nations goes smoothly and without problems." Shado's eyes strayed to Ayane, and his heart began to beat a little faster. He breathed once, twice, then continued.
"I have had a telegram from my second in command back in Shadostan, I believe you know her, Malign." Shado held the telegram up. "Dana Silverleaf, my advisor and friend, has alerted me that your army has been gathering near the border of our territories. Is this true?"
We wonder if, perhaps, you could aid our government in adding to our empire those small states to the south of us? For their own protection? We would be honored if you would aid the Principality in this holy endeavor.

Minister for Foriegn Affairs and Trade, Duke Simon Darquis
Yes, Ambassador. But my answer will remain, as it always has been, no.
The Most Holy Principality of Roania
Malign stood once more, colour flushing to his face.
"You expect us to trust you? After Western Navascuez? After the problems with YFS? In Digital Technology? You expect us to trust the son of the man who sent our brothers, our fathers, our..." Malign's voice began to break under the obvious emotion, "...our sons...to their deaths? How can you be so selfish? How can you expect us to trust you, Shado, son of Umbron?"
Tears in the corners of his eyes, Malign fell silent.
"Malign, what you must understand is that..."
Shado sighed. He knew this was going to happen.
"I am not my father, Malign, nor will I ever be, nor do I want to be."
Espio stood to speak. His scales were a dull, neutral green, and he looked worried and tired.
"Mr. Malign, my Lord Shado. It seems to me that emotions are running high, as are tempers, whereas energy is currently not. Might I respectfully request of her Highness Queen Ayane a short recess to compose ourselves and our arguments?"
We wonder if, perhaps, you could aid our government in adding to our empire those small states to the south of us? For their own protection? We would be honored if you would aid the Principality in this holy endeavor.
We would, of course, welcome delegations of both sides for peaceful negotiations. All participants would naturally have to be willing.
Ayane nodded, her face as grave and solemn's as Shado's.
"Recess is granted," she said, her voice soft and concerned. "I would urge both sides to set aside anger and resentment if we are to achieve positive results."
She exchanged a quick glance with Shado, and resisted the urge to give him a sad smile.

I-Ron Lun, Man-Ho's Minister for Communication, Foreign Affairs and Introduced Pests reads the latest news from Ribenia. (The newspapers have been late recently). He immediately brings it to the attention of Man-Ho's Grand Centurion whose names cannot be spoken.
"Neutrality is an interesting concept - I have never heard of it before," The Grand Centurion muses. "The Ribenian Queen is a credible leader of a peaceful nation. As a fledgling nation, we must align ourselves with such competent leadership that we can only hope to learn from."
The Grand Centurion sends a telegram immediately to inform Ribenia of Man-Ho's wishes to be involved in such an altruistic action...

((Thread in question))
OOC: It's nice to see someone who knows some real-world geography. ;)
IC:
We re-iterate our reply. All parties are welcome to Ribenia for talks on your proposed annexation of those territories.
Her Majesty is touched and honoured by the Grand Centurion's message. She wishes you to know that the government and people of Man-ho will always be welcome to make use of our facilities, and may additionnally send diplomats to assist in talks between other parties should they wish to so contribute.
OOC: An inhabitant of Ribenia is a Ribenese, by the way, not a Ribenian. ;)
We politely request that you order the Roanians to cease this unwarranted invasion of our people. Already, large portions of our people have been added to their empire.
We need your assistance to force an end to this unwarranted aggression.
((Isn't it, though?))
Her Majesty understands the position of the Micronesian Peoples. It is our hope that, if all sides agree to come to the negotiations table, we may all resolve this conflict together peacefully and prevent further bloodshed.
In the interests of working for a peaceful union between our two peoples, we shall send an ambassador to Ribenia, and pray that your Majesty will, of course, side with our righteous cause.
I object to the Roanian Government's reference to peaceful union, and a righteous cause. Our people are dying, your majesty, and the greater powers of the Pacific do nothing. Are we beneath their notice? I spend my nights in prayer that someone will come and aid us against the military state that threatens to destroy our way of life. We are a democracy, and the democracies do not heed our call! We are being left to die!
Please, glorious Queen... help us against this scourge.
The ambassador from Roania is welcome.
Will the Micronesian Peoples also be sending an ambassador to Ribenia to meet with the Roanian representative for peaceful talks aimed at resolving this dispute? Her Majesty will arbitrate discussions and seek to help you reach a mutually acceptable solution.
Yes, of course... but, your majesty... you have to help us!
We are hoping this will help you. Assistance doesn't have to entail violence. Our aim is for you and Roania to come to an agreement rather than wage a pointless war.
Kyouichi Ando, Ribense peace diplomat, bowed politely to the Micronesian delegate.
"If you would come with me. The Roanian delegate has already arrived."
The room was comfortable, the windows offering a view of a well-tended garden. Every effort had been made to provide a soothing atmosphere... and hopefully end a war.
As Shado walked through the gardens, he spotted Malign sitting on a bench just off the path. He looked about. No-one else was around, and he had been hoping to catch Malign alone. He sat down next to him, and began to speak.
(Reeeeally long post comingup, watch this space! 8) )
OOC: OK, here it is! Sorry for the length! There's a lot of history between Shado and Malign, so any questions about their past should be directed at either Shado or Malign IC at a later date.
IC:It had been years since Malign and Shado had been left alone to talk. Shado was glad he had found Malign. He had much to say.
“Reichskristall Malign, I wish to speak with you.”
“And I with you, Shado Nocturne. We have much to say to one another, no?”
“That is so…” Shado paused. He had waited long for this discussion, but now he knew not what to say.
“I can see your feelings are confusing you,” Malign interrupted his thoughts, “so perhaps I should start.”
“By all means.”
Malign paused, carefully planning his next words.
“I hate you, Shado Nocturne. I hate you. I hated your father, I hated your mother, and I hate you. I hate everything you stand for, everything you have done, everything you are doing, and everything you will ever do. You must understand, however, that it is not for the pure joy of hatred that I dislike you and yours so. It is because of the very reason that makes me who I am. I am a Malign, of the line of Holocausta, and I was programmed from birth to hate you and your ideals. I hate you not out of choice, but out of necessity. I hate you because you have that which I will never have. You have morals, you have honour, you have respect, you have friends, you have…”
Malign paused, turning his eyes finally to meet Shado’s.
“You have love. I have seen the way you and Queen Ayane look at each other, Shado. I am no fool, I too was young once. Though that was millennia ago, I have not forgotten the feelings I felt. Your father was a cruel man to me, Shado. He was a cruel man to us all. Umbron would stop at nothing to gain power; you of all people should know that. That is why I am hostile. That is why I hate you, Shado.”
He lowered his head, as though exhausted, but continued speaking.
“Your father was the man that sent my son to his death on the fields of Western Navascuez. Cut down by South Dalanian gunfire. That is why we of the Armed Resistance do not use firearms, Shado. They hold too much suffering, too much grief. We live by the sword and die by the sword, just as you do, Shado. We are much alike, you and I. We both have dark secrets which only you and I share. Only I know of the death of your father, just as only you know of the death of mine. They were evil men, Shado, evil men who wanted nothing less than total domination. But we stopped them Shado. We stopped their reign of tyranny 50 years ago. And now look at us. We lived for 50 years in peace, Shado. 50 years. But times are changing. We are no longer the same. Alike, but not the same. I live for victory and you for peace. We can no longer live as one, Shado. Perhaps you understand this, perhaps you don’t. All I know is, after the curse was laid upon our families, much has changed. Too much. I wish only to start a new Empire, Shado. The People’s Republic of Holocausta. That will be our name. We will live side by side, Shado, you and I, but not together. We will live in peace, though not in the same land. I mean you no harm, son of Shadostan, if you mean me none, but I wish for a new beginning, a chance to reclaim some of the lost honour of my family. Give me that chance, Shado. I promise you won’t regret it.”
Malign finally fell silent, and after a few moments, Shado began to speak.
“It is true, what you said of our fathers, Reichskristall. They were evil. They were wrong. They had to be stopped, and we stopped them. We killed our own fathers to save the suffering and eventual death of millions of innocent people. We have sacrificed much, you and I. We have sacrificed the chance of every free person – to live and die happily. We sacrificed the chance of eternal happiness in order to save our people. We are no less than heroes, but so much less. We are the two men in our communities that care, truly care about our people. We have different views, yes, but are they so different? We both wish for the happiness of our people. No more, no less. That is a commendable attribute, Malign. We are too different now to live together, true. But working together, we can build a community, not an empire, which is truly strong. Not in economy, not in war, not in religion. In happiness. We can create the ideal world for our peoples, Reichskristall. But to do this, we must sacrifice our happiness. Our joy. Our welfare. Though we may part now, remember this Reichskristall Malign. I, Shado Nocturne, regardless of views and morals, I will always be your friend.”
Shado turned and walked away, leaving Malign on the bench as he had been found. There was still much to be done, though the hardest part of the dealings was now over.
OOC: Great writing!
IC:
Ayane looked out of the window for just a minute, then turned away. The two men obviously had much to discuss. As long as they were talking rather than fighting...
She walked back to the table and sat down, a troubled look on her face. What the outcome would be, she didn't know. She found Malign puzzling, difficult to understand. She knew she was missing something, and until she grasped it she would be of little help.
And how can I be impartial?
She knew Shado was a good man. Good, kind, wise, and caring. He would do what was best for his people. What was Malign's position?
She sighed, and waited for both men to return...
OOC: Why thank you! That means a lot! It didn't take as long to write as I thought it would!
IC: Shado walked back into the conference room, Espio following. Espio looked visibly refreshed, his scales now a brighter green, that of leaves in the middle of summer. They returned to their seats.
Malign walked in a few momenrts later, and sat down.
"It seems we are ready to continue, your highness."
"Thank you, gentlemen," she said in a soft voice. "Before recess, Lord Shado agreed to your demand for freedom, Mr. Malign, on the condition of a smooth seperation of your respective territories, and of assurances there will be no attempt at armed invasion of the territory that remains under Shadostanian jurisdiction. What reply would you like to make?"
Her gentle voice concealed the beating of her heart. Shado, the man she loved, stood on the brink of war. If violence erupted despite her efforts, she would never forgive herself...
OOC: MP said he's going to have slight difficulty getting on for a week or two. I'll try to run things through for him.
IC: The Roanian delegate looked up sharply at the micronesian. Dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, the man looked more like a lawyer than a diplomat. Behind him were several more men, each carrying bundles of paper. "So... you came alone?"
The Micronesian spat. "I came with justice."
The Roanian rolled his eyes. Temper, temper... this fool makes things easier for us.
Ando looked at both men in turn, and spoke in a low, calm voice.
"Anger will not lead to a peaceful solution," he pointed out politely. "Perhaps we should begin with your perspectives on the situation, your requests, and suggestions for resolution?"
The Roanian bowed low. "Of course." He strode over to a podium, and stood behind it, placing his notes before him. "I represent the Most Holy Principality of Roania. It is my sad pleasure to announce that recent problems have led to a rift between us, and our subject nations."
He took a drink of the distilled water he had brought from Roania. "We have decided, rightfully, that the Micronesian Peoples should be brought to task for plotting with our enemies against us. Thus, we are re-absorbing nations which were only independent because of an oversight on our part 100 years ago."
He paused, and held out a census form. "The vast majority of the Micronesian people now dwell on Novar Ohan, far outnumbering both their Melanesian and Polynesian counterparts. They also, at a population of 20 million based largely in the jungles of Southern Novar Ohan and on the Sunset Isles, outnumber those who are outside our borders, or were. They have been subject to intense propagandising by the President of the Micronesian Community, who has called upon them to declare their independence, thus splitting our sacred island."
The man paused, waiting for the Ribenian to respond or ask questions. The Micronesian seethed.
Ando gave no indication of what he thought at these stage.
"Thank you. Would the Micronesian representative now give his perspective? Then we can begin to work on the possibility of a compromise."
The Micronesian nodded, and moved to the podium. The Roanian bowed mockingly, and stepped aside. The brown skinned man coughed. "I am not used to public speaking. And I do not know how to twist ugly words to make them pretty, like the Roanian. All I know is to tell you the truth."
The man paused, obviously upset. Then he continued, "all I know is that my people are dying, are being kept from their culture by a foul dictatorship that swallows all before it, and takes what is good. This... this... propaganda the ambassador speaks of, it is nothing more than us trying to remind the natives of Maui-ke-hau-waki of their culture, of their religion." Tears fell down the old man's face. "Your lordship, I know not how I can defend my people... I do not know what we are being accused of!" The man was too upset to speak any further.
OOC:  Wow, political talk... Way beyond me, but that sounds really cool! Well written! *looks very impressed indeed*
IC: The two men looked at each other for a moment, before Shado stood to speak.
"It has been decided, your Highness, that the separation of Shadostan and the new Peoples Republic of Holocausta will go ahead without violence or unnecessary untoward feeling. We will live in peace."
He smiled, and walked over to Malign, who also stood, and shook his hand. A sly grin crossed Malign's face, as his free hand reached for his pocket...
OOC:  Wow, political talk... Way beyond me, but that sounds really cool! Well written! *looks very impressed indeed*
OOC: She said that Lord Shado has agreed to Malign's request, so long as the seperation is peaceful, and that Malign's forces will not attempt to invade the territory that remains under your control.
Using the hand holding Shado's, Malign spun the younger man around, pulling the dagger from his pocket and holding it to his throat. His grin widened.
"Listen carefully, Shado Nocturne, son of Umbron. I will withdraw my forces, and we will leave our lands in peace...for now. But if you ever cross the line, I will come down on you so hard, you will wish you'd never been born."
Shado moved so swiftly now, it was difficult for the bare eye to see it. Before anyone knew what was happening, the dagger was in Shado's hand, and the men' positions had been reversed.
"And you should remember, Reichskristall Malign, that a Rider of Shadostan is not so easily defeated. And the same applies for the People's Republic of Holocausta. Cross the line, and we will defend ourselves by any means necessary."
Broad smiles grew on both men's faces, and the dagger fell to the floor unnoticed as they shook hands once again. Malign bent down and picked up the dagger, put it back in his pocket, and walked out of the room.
After packing, he made his way to the docks, boarded his ship, and set sail for home.
One of his crewmen called down from the rigging,
"What of the Shadostanians, sir? Are we our own people?"
"Yes," Malign replied, "Yes we are."
OOC: Thanks for this Ribenia, the split between Shadostan and Holocausta is finally complete. Though I have no doubt Shado will hang around, I have much to do now. I've got a nation to run! I thank you for this opportunity, and hope we may meet again!
Reichskristall Malign, warrior of the House of Holocausta, and leader of the newly-founded People's Republic of Holocausta.
OOC: She said that Lord Shado has agreed to Malign's request, so long as the seperation is peaceful, and that Malign's forces will not attempt to invade the territory that remains under your control.
OOC: Oh, even better then! Cool, thanks!
OOC:  Wow, political talk... Way beyond me, but that sounds really cool! Well written! *looks very impressed indeed*
OOC: *blushes* Thank you!
IN:
As Malign walked out of the room, Ayane found she was still trembling. The dagger flashing out had caught her completely off guard, and for one horrible, heart-stopping moment she had thought Shado was in mortal danger.
Realising she was holding her breath, she let it out slowly.
"Lord Shado... I am... glad a peaceful decision has been reached."
Her heart was still beating fast with shock, and she took a moment to try and calm herself.
OOC: It would be easier if they had names. ;)
IC:
Ando nodded slowly.
"Clearly, the Miconesian people see themselves as the victims of violence, and cultural gencide." He turned to the other man, the Roanian. "You see now a compromise of some kind is necessary. The alternative is for the situation to spin out of control."
Shado smiled.
"There is an old saying, 'Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.' Malign and I are very close. We would not harm each other. We know the consequences would be too dire to contemplate. We have seen far too much death and suffering in our lives to bring that upon ourselves and our peoples."
He walked over to Ayane, and held her shoulders.
"The dagger was symbolic of our relationship. We hold each other's fates on a knife edge. If either one of us rocks it, our worlds will fall to their doom. We both know that. Malign and I have our differences, but we are in many ways alike. There is no friendship between us, but enormous mutual respect. We have been through much together, and we do not wish do stain our memories with blood."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Espio quietly got up and left the two leaders alone. He would pack his bags and leave, his work was done here. He would return home, and see that the separation went as smoothly as planned. It would be what Shado would ask him to do anyway, and he saw no point delaying.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shado let go of Ayane and walked to the window.
"Much has changed since last we met, has it not? And yet some things have stayed exactly the same." Shado's face began turning red. "Like my feelings for you. Today has been the hardest day of my over-extended life so far, m'lady, but I am glad I was able to be near you at this time. It warms my heart immensely to see you like this, maintaining peace and neutrality in the face of such a world. It makes me so proud to even know you, let alone..."
Shado's voice trailed off, and he turned back to Ayane. There were tears in his eyes, and he suddenly looked so weary as to seem as though he might fall down at the slightest passing breeze. He looked vulnerable and young, nothing like he had during the trial, and it seemed a reminder of his youthful appearance and temperament. He was so tired...
Ayane felt her eyes sting with tears, and blinked them away.
"And I am proud of you, my lord. So very proud." She walked up to him. "Your people are lucky indeed that you are their leader. And I..."
She smiled softly.
"You are tired, Shado. You should sleep. You've more than earned it. We will talk when you are rested."
Shado smiled. It had been far too long since he had rested. Returning to his quarters, Shado saw that Espio had already left. He smiled, Espio had always been one step ahead of him.
He lay down on his bed, and fell asleep almost instantly.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, Shado woke early, and went for a walk around the grounds. When he saw people beginning to become active, he went back inside and searched for someone to help him find Ayane.
OOC: Fine. We'll call the Roanian... Bethmann, and the Micronesian... *checks for current heads of state of Micronesian countries...* Amata Kabua.
IC:
Bethmann rolled his eyes. "I'm sure it must be obvious to the honored ambassador from Micronesia that there is but one way for both our peoples to be satisfied. And that is a peaceful merger." The Roanian spread his hands apologetically. "If the honored Lord Ando has any other ideas, I would be pleased to hear them." A slight menace came to his lilting tones as he looked at Kabua. "And if the honored representative of our rebellious territories has any ideas..."
Kabua looked heavenwards. Honored ancestors, why did I come to this place? From the very first, I could see that the Ribenians have more in common with the northmen... "I can not support, and my people will not support, any decision which puts these people under control." The man seemed to consider the question.
One of the other Roanians looked at Ando. "I was under the impression Her Majesty hears the cases of this palace. Not a minor court functionary. Have we lost face?" The other Roanians looked at the man. Bethmann gave a curt signal. They leapt to their feet and dragged the protester outside.
Bethmann laughed nervously. "My apologies, Lord Ando. I was forced to take him. Minister Darquis insisted."
The Micronesian looked at Bethmann curiously. "And so, what will you do with him?"
There was a curious sound from outside. As if a wet rag had been dropped... "Not important. Come now, my friend. Any ideas?"
The Micronesian nodded thoughtfully. "Perhaps you could grant us full independence, something we already have, and we could allow you to use the bases you have built..."
"And you would cease sending men up to the Micronesians on Novar Ohan?"
"Yes. Because they would be one with us."
Bethmann stared, and then stood up angrily. He would have launced himself violently at the smaller man, if the other Roanians had not entered. One of them coughed. "I regret to say that Carlos Offenheim suffered a cardiac arrest."
Ando looked stricken.
"Indeed," he said darkly. But what could he do? Accuse the Roanians of murder and jeopordise these entire talks? He turned to Bethmann. "I believe you were about to answer Lord Kabua's requests?"
Ayane was just finishing breakfast and was about to review reports from her advisers when she was informed Shado was up and looking for her. A smile lit up her face. She said she would meet him in the throne room, and headed there with a beating heart.
Minutes later, she was looking at him with shining eyes.
"Lord Shado..." She smiled at him gently. "Are you well rested?"
OOC: Well, to be fair, they were defending Ando's reputation and honor... at least, that's how it seems to them.
IC:
Bethmann looked stricken himself. "What do you mean by... um... 'one with you'?" The man asked, visibly restraining his temper.
Kabua bared his teeth. "Well, I meant that the Government of Roania would grant the Micronesian territories in south-eastern Novar Ohan independence, and cease and desist any attacks upon the other Micronesian islands."
"Yes... I thought that was what you said. You wish us to give up roughly 1/8th of our continent?"
"Well, they aren't your people, are they?"
Bethmann stared at the man, as if wondering if Kabua's next action would be to sprout wings and fly.
"Clearly, you must compromise on your territorial claims," Ando pointed out reasonably. "There is of course the matter of present, de facto control."
Every Roanian in the room stared at Ando now, as if the man was a dangerous lunatic. Bethmann wringed his hands. We came here to discuss peaceful resolution of this conflict... not to debate upon the property of our main island...
"I'm terribly sorry, My Lord Ando. However, that is quite impossible. The Micronesian areas on Novar Ohan are... vital parts of cosmopolitan Roania."
"My suggestion was not that you should relinquish control of them, Lord Bethmann," Ando said calmly. "My suggestion was that we should all remain open to suggestions and possibilities. Now... who has present control of each of the territories in dispute?"
Bethmann smiled. "That would be... us." He pulled out a map detailing Roanian conquests in the central pacific. "The only territories that have not been restored to us is the main archipegalo of Micronesia."
Kabua shook his head. "This is an unlawful conquest, not a restoration. You attack those weaker than you! We have no hope to pause your military! I doubt that even these Ribenians, who demonstrate cultural superiority to you, could prevent a conquest by you if you so desired. Your nation is an abberation upon this holy Earth!"
Bethmann bared his teeth. "Quite. If we were back in Roania, I would call you out for such remarks. However, I doubt that insults will get you anything."
"Perhaps we could refrain from non-constructive arguments?" Ando suggested. "One thing we should establish is what each side is prepared to cede to the other to preserve peace."
It was all Shado could do not to run up and embrace Ayane, who looked radiant even at this early hour, unlike Shado, who felt unworthy to be in her presence, so rough as he felt he looked.
"I am indeed, m'lady. I was wondering if I might be able to talk awhile with you. There is much I wish to say. It can, of course, wait, if you have other, more pressing matters. I understand there are Roanians in the building, and it would not do to anger them."
A wry smile crossed Shado's face as he said this.
"Roanians are not, I understand, the sort of people who make compromises."
Ayane sighed.
"It is my hope that they will make compromises. Or I fear there will be no path but war..." She shook her head sadly. "I wonder, sometimes, if there will ever come a day... when war is no longer looked upon as a quick solution to the world's problems."
She looked up at him, and gave a small, sad smile. Shado was a shining example of better ways. She not only loved him, but admired him. Deeply.
"But you wished to talk, my lord. I will always listen to what you have to say, or ask. Come, walk with me in the gardens."
Bethmann coughed. "Compromises? Very well... we are prepared to offer our Micronesian brethren the chance to serve in our great and holy cause. To be our brothers, one with our ideals. Surely, surely that is a worth-while goal? One worth making sacrifices for?" The Roanian ambassador seemed as if he believed exactly what he was saying. The other Roanians nodded, as if this was being offered by a god.
Kapua stared, and stared, and stared. Then, he smiled. The man threw his head back and laughed, as if he had been told the most amusing joke in history.
Ando refrained from a groan. How were they ever supposed to find common groan?
"Lord Kapua?" he asked, for formality's sake. "Your answer? I believe we may have stumbled on a matter of... cultural differences. Differing beliefs..."
Kabua tittered with barely suppressed mirth. The Roanians were too scandalised to be angry, and Bethmann stood up and opened his mouth. "It seems we were mistaken. I do not,"
Another member of the entourage spoke over him, and said, "think we will get anything done this session. Perhaps a recess should be called?" The other Roanians were getting red in the face as their confusion started to mutate into rage.
Kabua nodded, still spasming with laughter.
Shado walked beside Ayane in silence for a few minutes, relishing the very fact that he was near her. Suddenly, as though waking from a dream, Shado stopped, looked around, and spoke.
"I feel...safe...around you, m'lady. This place holds no fear for me. I know that behind closed doors, the fates of millions, if not billions of people are being decided, yet that doesn't seem to affect me. You are a great distraction for a weary soul, your Highness."
Embarrassed, he stopped talking, and they walked some more.
"I didn't know how to tell you this, but I wish to remain here, m'lady, for as long as I can be of help. I have left Espio and Dana in charge of the running of Shadostan, and I would much like to spend more time here with you. We have never really talked, I mean really talked, have we your Highness?"
Shado looked deep into her eyes.
"I feel we should."
Ayane looked back into his eyes, and felt her knees weaken. She took a moment to steady herself from the beating of her heart, then smiled gently.
"You're right, my lord. We haven't. And you are welcome to stay in Ribenia for as long as you wish. In fact... I... would very much like you to stay."
She paused.
"We... could begin talking now," she added, her voice betraying just a hint of shyness...
"I concur," Ando said, trying hard to stay calm. "We will take a recess. Thank you."
The Roanians angrily trooped out of the room, marching in equal stride. As one, as if to prove some sort of point, they removed the jackets which they had hithertoo been wearing. Underneath, they all wore military uniform. "We shall meet here again in 1 hour. Perhaps then we can move on from insulting eachother."
Kabua coughed, apologetically, and moved to the other door, seeming very old and frail. "I... didn't mean to insult anyone... they were just..." the man sighed, and left.
OOC: Her Majesty might want an update on the situation...
OOC: She might indeed. :) What's the situation?
Shado smiled, hearing Ayane speaking in such a way, and he too felt a little embarassed.
"Well...I...uh...We...don't really know that much about each other, do we? I mean, not really. And I'd certainly like to know more about you, about your past, your present, what you'd like to do in the future..."
Shado fell into a hopeful silence.
OOC: Ando's opinion on the case, and the fact that the Roanians are plotting to murder Kabua should he do anything like that again.
Oh, and they're getting tired of dealing with Ando. They want someone who could compell the Micronesians to obey via her strength of personality. Thus, they're going to try to get to the Queen with 'statistics' that are faked and show the Micronesians in the worst possible light.
Only you don't know that.
:P
Ayane blushed.
"There is nothing very extraordinary about my life. I haven't wandered the far corners of the globe as you have, my lord." She kept her eyes on him, eyes that revealed the full measure of her love and admiration for him. "I try... to be a good, just and kind monarch to my people. As for my future..."
She paused, shyness overcoming her.
"I find I could not imagine it without you at my side..." she told him in a whisper.
She looked away, her heart thundering in her chest. And it was at that moment, before Shado could reply, that an attendant came running up to her.
"Your Majesty! Your Majesty, forgive me for interrupting. The lord Ando reports all is not well in the discussions with the Roanians. There are... cultural barriers they are having difficulties overcoming. And the Roanians... my lady, he says their violence is frightening to behold."
The look on Ayane's face darkened.
"Tell the lord Ando he should continue his efforts for the time being. I will intervene should the discussions fail to progress."
The attendant bowed, and departed quickly, leaving the two alone once more. A sigh escaped Ayane's lips as she looked again into the eyes of the man who held her heart. Despite all her love for him, she felt deeply preoccupied, and could not shake a sense of foreboding as she thought of the Roanians...
OOC: Waiting for Ando to reconvene...
Shado blushed brightly as he heard Ayane's whispered words, and was intensely startled when the attendant ran up. After he left, Shado heard Ayane sigh, and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Heavy is the weight which lies upon shoulders so pure, m'lady. T'would be best to resolve this conflict as quickly as possible. Perhaps you should try to intervene personally? I would be happy to accompany you."
Shado leaned closer, and whispered,
"And I could never imagine my life without you."
Bethmann paced in the rooms he had been allocated. "Where are those papers?"
"Here, my lord."
"The outrage! Humiliated!" The Roanian slammed his fist into the desk. It crumbled.
"Yes, my lord." The aide placed the papers on the ruined desk, and backed away.
The ambassador scanned through them. And then he himself started to laugh, a deep booming laugh. "Hee hee... ha. BWA HA HA HA HA!"
Ayane smiled gently.
"You know how to speak the right words, my lord. Let's see if we can make a difference."
Moments later, as the two of them entered the discussion room, her eyes moved to Ando's tired face. The representatives of both sides were glaring at one another.
"Gentlemen," she said calmly. "It is a pleasure to meet you."
Shado looked around the room. Ando looked as tired as Shado himself had felt earlier. He smiled in sympathy. Looking further, Shado saw the two representatives. One, Bethmann, he recognised from description and reputation alone, and the other he did not know at all.
"I am honoured to make your acquaintances, my Lords. I pray that we may all leave this room in the best of health, mentally, physically and spiritually. I am sure that can be achieved." he said, and sat close to Ayane. He remained silent as the discussion continued.
OOC: Call me slow, but I just found ATG's "Immortal Pond" thread, and I would be honoured if you would accompany me there, m'lady.
Bethmann coughed. "Your Majesty. It is a pleasure to see you. I have recently received some statistics that we found in the rebel government hall in the Marshall islands."
He passed the papers up to Ando and a copy to both Lord Shado and Queen Ayane. "As you can see, the Micronesians have, in their time of rulership, engaged in what seems to be a systematic 'dumbing down' of their people, while they were in rebellion. Literacy stands at 55%, as compared to 98% for the Micronesians who dwell on Novar Ohan. As well, those who remained loyal are, on the whole, healthier and live longer lives." Bethmann looked sympathetic. "I am sure you can both agree that the lives of the Micronesian Islanders will be better if they return to the Principality."
Kabua stood up, angrily. "Objection! These are barefaced lies!"
Ayane looked over the papers, then turned to Kabua.
"Are you contesting the statistics or Lord Bethmann's interpretation of them?" she asked softly.
Kabua thought, and spoke. "Both, m'lady... these documents have, I am sure... been tampered with!"
Bethmann silently passed him a copy. Kabua scanned it, became pale, and sat down slowly. "My lady... might I withdraw for a moment? Perhaps you can consult with the Roanians without me, and then... I have something to show you, in private..."
Ayane considered, then nodded.
"Of course," she said gently. "You may take all the time you need."
After Kabua had left, she turned to the Roanians. Ando had fallen silent, apparently content to let her take over.
"Lord Bethmann, what do you believe is the wish of the people whose lands... are in dispute?"
Quickly scanning the papers, Shado peered over them to study the two delegates. They both seemed determined, although as the Micronesian read the statistics, Shado saw his face visibly pale. He watched the Micronesian's retreating form, and considered his offer.
"Perhaps you can consult with the Roanians without me, and then... I have something to show you, in private..."
There was something not right here, and Shado would have to stay alert to make sure nothing compromised these talks. If Ayane wished for peace, these men would have to have it, or they would answer to him.
Bethmann nodded, thoughtfully. "Why, I am sure that their wish is the same as those of every other living thing. To grow, to learn, to serve... all of these things we offer, and as you'll note, offer in a much better way than the Micronesians themselves."
The Roanian passed Lord Ando a set of photographs next. "These are all photographs of Roanian cities."
The aerial photos showed massive grid-like streets, and a universal design. In a picture of an entire city (in Roan proper), the only colors were the grey of the towers, and the yellow of the sand. Green didn't exist. In another photograph, the same grid pattern was evident, from the ground. People dressed in grey clothes, the only splashes of colour evident being jewellery. Armed police men, dressed in pure black uniforms, stood watch from each corner.
For contrast, a photo of a Micronesian community in the islands was provided. Green, rice paddies, jungle, haphazard design and people walking dressed in a myriad of colors.
Bethmann nodded. "See? We aim to bring civilisation to these islanders."
After the photoes had bee
Ando nodded slowly.
"I do see your perspective... Have you considered conducting these efforts through diplomatic means? Through industries and building construction, perhaps?"
"Have you studied the wishes of the Micronesian people?" Ayane added. "Has the Micronesian government allowed you to set this possibility before them?" She looked Bethmann gently. "Would that no be a fair solution to your dispute?"
She glanced quickly at Shado. She was glad and grateful he was here. Somehow, she felt that with him present, everything could only go well...
Bethmann looked confused, but rallied. "I... we did! Yes! And they turned us down!"

Kabua searched through his spartan supplies. Finally, he came upon a videotape. I can only hope the Ribenians have the facilties neccessary for this

Ayane nodded.
"I see. Well... when they return, we can re-submit the idea to them," she said with a smile. And find out whether they really did mention it...
"Certainly m'lady." Bethmann bowed.
A timer rang, signalling it was time for the Roanians to withdraw.
"I see. Well... when they return, we can re-submit the idea to them,"
Shado had to stop himself from smiling. He admired the way Ayane had handled the situation, with such collectedness and calm, she was the living embodiment of dimplomacy, her voice demaniding reason and discussion. He was dubious about the truth behind the Roanian's words, but resolved to keep his mind open, and his opinion also. He looked forward with a worrying fascination to seeing what the Micronesian emmissary had to show them. He was becoming totally engrossed in the situation, and was almost excited to see what would happen next, to the point of nearly calling out fdor more, and sitting right on the edge of his seat.
The ringing of the timer mentally shaking him from his current state of mind, Shado brought his thoughts back to the seriousness of the situation, and the gravity behind the accusations and statements being made. He was also worried, as his childish side rarely surfaced, and only when he was too weary of the world to properly concentrate. He shook his head, and demanded to himself that his eyes stay open and that he stays alert.
In a few moments, the phase had passed, and he looked to the door, hearing the approaching Micronesians.
"Gentlemen," Ayane greeted the Micronesians with a warm smile. "I trust you have had adequate time? What was it you wished to show me? After that, I have a proposal to submit on behalf of the Roanians..."
Though she didn't look at Shado as she spoke, she knew he was standing beside her, and his presence gave her strength... and the determination she needed not to fail. She had only to imagine the determination with which he tackled any situation. He inspired her.
She looked questioningly at Kabua.
Shado stood beside Ayane as the delegate entered, and heard her words,
"Gentlemen, I trust you have had adequate time? What was it you wished to show me? After that, I have a proposal to submit on behalf of the Roanians..."
Shado could sense her standing nearby, could feel her confidence and hope growing inside her. She had changed, even since they had met. She was stronger, more confident... She was in her element here, preventing war and saving lives. Shado could not help but feel intensely proud as he waited for the Micronesian to speak.
Bethmann bowed deeply, and said, "May God grant your majesty a happy life." The Roanians walked out, scowling at Kabua as he entered.
The Micronesian waited for the Roanians to leave, and then coughed. "Does your majesty have... have some form of video player? I have here a video of the Roanian's conquest of our islands..."
"Of course," Ayane told him, and motioned for Ando to bring one in. A minute or so later, she took the profered tape from Kabua... but paused before inserting it.
"Lord Kabua... Before we watch it, may I ask what point you intend to make by showing us this?"
"I wish to show you the other side of Roania, the side they wouldn't tell you about." He waited for her to put it in.
OOC: Put it in the machine. It will provide Ayane with an interesting contrast to her own ideals.
Ayane gave a small nod, inserted the tape, and pressed "play". Then she stepped back and, almost unconsciously, moved closer to Shado, mentally bracing herself for what the screen might reveal...
The sound of shouts booms from the speakers. Men shout, and charge with shotguns and AK-47s. A man's voice can be heard, "We have recieved word that the invaders are here... we... what is this?"
There is a hissing noise, and a strange yellow gas floats through the streets of the village on the screen. People die all over the place, a child falls into the street retching and coughing up blood. A hacking noise is heard loudly, seeming to come from directly behind the picture.
The camera falls to the ground, blood splattering its lense. Men appear in the distance, men in grey uniforms whose faces are invisible behind full-face ventilation masks. The Roanian flag flies over them. They look into the village, and seem to silently confer. Then they spray a rain of bullets into the bodies, and off camera. Men and women scream, and somewhere a child cries out loud.
The Roanians march through.
<=======>
Kabua stared, and wiped away a tear. "One of our agents managed to find about this and get it before it was destroyed."
Ayane's eyes were wide and brimmed with tears. She breathed in and out shakily. A part of her knew the images could all have been faked, but she couldn't find it in herself to voice that thought. Not in the face of such horror.
"I'm so sorry..." she whispered. Tears trickled down her cheeks. It took her a moment before she could speak again. "Would... would you object to my showing this to the Roanians?"
Kabua nodded his approval, silently. He bowed. "My apologies for showing this to you, your majesty... but I had to show you what the Roanians were really like under that cultured exterior..."
<=======>
Bethmann sat in the antechamber, a goblet of wine by his side. He sensed that something was wrong, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
"No apology necessary," she said, almost in a whisper. "If you would give me a moment, I will... talk to the Roanian delegation."
She waited until Ando had escorted Kabua out of the room, and informed Bethmann the Queen would be seeing him in just a few minutes, then turned to Shado.
"Oh, Shado..." she whispered, tears now streaming down her face. Now that she was alone with him, she could drop the facade of calm, and the horror of what she had just seen overwhelmed her. She looked at him through eyes blurred with tears, trembling, speachless.

Most unfortunately none such disunity is within the PRKS due to the agreement as orchestrated by Kanabia. However, if we do have such a crisis upon that magnitude, we will ask permission in using your site for talks.
Shado took Ayane into his arms and comforted her as best he could. He had watched the tape in silence, and his face seemed to reflect the grief of the Micronesian. Though he shed no tears, Shado could not help but feel compassion for the Micronesians, and a certain amount of hatred for the Roanians. He knew not what to do, how to react... He decided to help Ayane in any way he could, and so he would accompany her to whatever talks and arguments as would be held with these Roanians and Micronesians. He would be her emotional support in such a war, of both words and weapons. He would be strong for her, for the woman he loved.
Bethmann waited outside the door, alone. His entourage had been left in the room. He clenched his fists, and rocked back and forth on his heels. Today... he thought, today shall be the day that Civilisation finally comes forth over the barbarians...
He looked around once more at the palace. Palace of Peace... these people know nothing. There is no peace without war, joy without sorrow, strength without weakness, nor good without evil. These Ribenians... they may be our racial kin, but we are beyond them on so much.
Still, I am sure that they can be made to see reason. He thought back to his immense estate, and the reward he would get from the Prime Minister.
He might even get a seat on the Council Chair. Her Highness would, he was sure, be so impressed that she'd elevate him to replace that buffoon Darquis. He would be renowned as the man who re-united Roania with the rebels peacefully.

Representatives of the PRKS would be most welcome to Ribenia in their hour of need. We hope, however, that you will never have to face war or serious disunity. May your people and nation prosper and live in happiness and security.
Ayane let the tears come as Shado held her comfortingly in his arms. His presence soothed her somewhat. He gave her a measure of the strength and resolve she needed. And her love for him sustained her.
With his arms around her she felt safe. Nothing could go wrong as long as Shado cared for her. But there were many who were not so fortunate. Many who were not safe. Gently, she broke away from him, and gave him a sad but grateful smile, wiping away her tears.
"My lord... my love. I would be lost without you..." she whispered.
She took a moment to calm and compose herself, then called at last for Bethmann to be shown in.
"Lord Bethmann." She kept her voice so calm it surprised even her. "Lord Kabua has shown me most disturbing images of Roanian acts. I would ask for your comment upon them."
She rewound the video and played it again. But this time, she didn't watch. She couldn't. She didn't want to cry and show weakness in front of Bethmann...
Bethmann stared, dispassionately. When the movie finished, he bowed. "Your majesty, I am but a humble ambassador. My two years Imperial Service were several years back. What do you hope to show?"
He vaguely remembered his tactical book. "If you're wondering, I'm pretty sure that's #45."
Shado too did not watch as the tape was replayed, but concentrated on the face of the Roanian ambassador, which remained passive and emotionles throughout.
"Your majesty, I am but a humble ambassador. My two years Imperial Service were several years back. What do you hope to show? If you're wondering, I'm pretty sure that's #45." Stated the Roanian, without an ounce of emotion in his voice.
"#45?" Shado asked, "What do you mean #45?"
Shado was rapidly losing his patience with the ambassador. How could he have watched that and been so...so cold?
Bethmann looked up, interested. "Ah... #45 in the Novar Ohan Imperial Legions's Officerial Strategic Maneuver's Book. And #4 on the List of Tactical Actions. And #22 on the list of actions taken in war that could lead to a dishonourable discharge for lack of honour in a battle situation." Bethmann narrowed his eyes. "Or was that #22 on the list of actions which could lead to a demotion? Whatever. I am indeed most shocked at this video. If it is revealing the truth, then the commanding officer acted without honor. There are set ways to deal with enemy forces, and using an active combat strategy is over the top. I assure you, the Centurion responsible will be reprimanded, if he hasn't already been such. And there might be a summary court martial and execution for the Decurion in charge of that group, for carrying out such low and base orders."
Ayane's head spun. Such coldness... And where did the truth lie? Both sides could be lying; how could she know? She felt sickness in her stomach. How was she supposed to deal with this?
"Lord Bethmann, are you saying then that this was an abberation? An act your government could never have condoned?"
"Maybe", said Bethmann, smugly. "But, we have more important things to deal with."
Ayane gave him a long, hard look.
"Perhaps. There is still the matter of your proposal which the Micronesians, you said, rejected. We will resubmit it to them." She paused, and sighed, knowing she might not like the reply to the question she was about to ask. "Would your government have condoned such brutal acts, or not?"
Bethmann smiled, mysteriously. "It all depends. While, recently, First Marshal Michael has declared such tactics to be without honor, he has allowed them to be used against hostile targets. Perhaps this village was such a target. Conversely, Her Imperial Highness, Princess Malissa, has said that she dislikes the idea greatly, and wants all such weapons destroyed."
The ambassador paused, and continued. "I would have to say that since this is a military matter, that in now way effects the Empire as a whole, the government body charged with combatting the insurgency would, indeed, depending on circumstances, condone and possibly reward such tactics, if they proved to be reasonable force."
Shado was angered by the Roanian's cool, calm nature, and the smug grin on his face as he spoke, and Shado would not have anyone answer Ayane in such a way. He could feel his hackles rising as the emissary's behaviour began to get to him.
"What exactly would you call..."reasonable force", sir? Would it be the use of such weapons? Would it only be reasonable if they had threatened or even attacked you? Would it be reasonable if you thought they were going to attack you? Would it be reasonable if you thought they might attack you unless you kept away from them? Would it be reasonable if they had expressed interest in talking with you about the weather or some such triviality? Please explain the term "Reasonable force", sir, as I seem to be having trouble understanding it. Would it, for example, be a use of reasonable force if all of those people who died in that film were innocent civilians and you had thought might be plotting against you but were in fact doing nothing of the sort?"
Shado sensed he was getting carried away, and fell silent for a moment. Closing his eyes, Shado spoke slowly and quietly now.
"I do not believe in the term "reasonable force", sir, for one good reason. Any force could be considered reasonable by someone who thought force was necessary. Who thought it would solve anything."
Shado opened his eyes once more, and sat down.
"Force can solve problems in the short term, sir, but I do not believe it will solve anything in this case. So could you perhaps describe to me how the use of such weapons could be considered "reasonable force", as I am having severe trouble believing anything that is said to me, by you or the Micronesian delegate." Shado glanced up at Ayane, hoping that his somewhat childish outburst of emotion had not displeased her or made her be seen in a bad light.
Ayane looked back at the man she loved, and bit her lip. She wouldn't have put it quite so bluntly, but a part of her was glad he had said it. She gave him a soft, loving smile, then turned to Bethmann, awaiting his explanation.
"Madame, as I have told both you and this gentleman, I am but an ambassador. During my two years Imperial Service I didn't even make Decurion. If you truly wish to learn more about this, I will go and get my military attache." Bethmann nodded to Shado. "And I am truly glad that you do not believe the poison the Micronesian is spreading. That is one step closer to learning the truth."
<=========>
Kabua was walking through the palace gardens when he felt a sharp stabbing pain. The man suddenly fell forward, lying there.
"Please do consult your attache, Ambassador," Ayane asked him. "In the meantime, I believe we can resume talks with Lord Kabua."
As Bethmann went to find his attache, she gave orders for Kabua to be re-admitted to the discussion room. He had, apparently, been for a walk in the gardens. Ayane nodded. Perhaps the beauties of the gardens would help calm him.
When a panicked report came back to her that Kabua had been found stabbed and rushed to hospital, however, she let out a horrified gasp, and turned to Shado, aghast. It was impossible, unthinkable!
The look in her eyes turning to smoldering anger, an emotion she only rarely experienced, she ordered, her voice cold and furious,
"Get Lord Bethmann back in here NOW! Convey my deepest apologies to the Micronesian delegation, tell them the hospital staff will do everything they can. And give them armed guard protection."
When Bethmann was ushed back in, her eyes were still filled with icy anger.
"Lord Kabua has been stabbed, and is in critical condition. There are no assassins amongst my people, Lord Bethmann. What is going on?"
Bethmann himself stared in shock. "Kabua has been assassinated? Surely you do not suspect my people, Madame." He shook his head. "I am sure that this is all some mistake... may I speak to him, though?"
OOC: Say yes.
"He's in a critical state!" Ayane pointed out indignantly. "They don't know whether he's going to survive!"
She felt as though her world, her dream, her ideals were crumbling around her. Her heart sank. She felt sick.
Her voice softened.
"We'll all go to the hospital, Lord Bethmann. You may talk to him when the doctors allow it."
Bethmann nodded. His own dreams had suddenly crumbled into dust. With a bow, he left the room, seeking his entourage. When he found them, he immediately drew his diplomatic pistol. "I don't know which of you imbeciles did this. But when I find out, I'll shoot him."
The other Roanians looked uncomfortable. "What's the problem?"
"Our opposing number is in critical condition. One of you dishonorable bastards stabbed him."
"I hardly think that whoever it was acted without honour... you didn't declare him to be an Honored Enemy, did you?" A young man's voice piped up.
Bethmann rounded on him. "The fact we sat down to talk in good faith marks him as an Honored Enemy. We are all going there, and he is going to tell me which of you stabbed him. You've destroyed everything we worked for, and my report will request a sentence of treason for all of us, if one of us doesn't step forward."
He waited. No one moved. "Very well. Then I leave our souls in the hands of God."
After Bethmann had walked out, Ayane turned to her beloved Shado. She was shivering slightly, looking up into his eyes, seeking to draw from his strength as she felt her own fade away...
"Has all this been for nothing, then?" she asked with tears in her eyes. "My lord Shado, tell me, was I naive to believe I could make a difference?" Her voice dropped to a desperate whisper. "Am I truly powerless to do any good in this world?"
When the report came in of the attack on Kabua, Shado had very nearly unsheathed his sword and gone hunting for the one who had done this, but Ayane's calming presence had kept him from doing so. The anger in her voice when she had spoken to Bethmann had surprised and scared him, not because he hadn't expected it, but because he hadn't realised just how deeply she felt about this, and for the fear she instilled in him, Shado loved her more. Putting his arm around her and holding her close, he whispered,
"Everything will turn out OK, you'll see."
It was the most he could think of at that time, and he almost hated himself for not being able to find better words to express how he felt. He suddenly remembered their time in Amandathegreat, and then said,
"We can at least try. Even if that's all we can do, we have to try."
Leading her out of the room, they headed off to the hospital under armed guard, and all the while Shado had his hand on his sword, his arm and hand tense under his grey tunic.
Bethmann and the Roanians were already at the hospital. Bethmann looked ashen under his top-hat. With a nod, he led the others into Kabua's room. "Your majesty, I... took the liberty of disobeying your orders, and came here to meet with Kabua on my own..."
The Micronesian lay on the bed. His wiry frame had been heavily bandaged. "Did you?" He coughed out.
Bethmann paused, and nodded. "Yes, but the orderly wouldn't let me in." He sat down, heavily. "After this dishonorable conduct, I am left without choice but to hereby revoke Roanian claims, and abandon this mission."
One of the Roanians, a large, beefy man, looked outraged on that. He opened his mouth as if to say something, and his hand went to his pocket.
OOC: Shadostan, Shado could probably notice that. He's holding a knife.
Shado had found exactly the words she had needed to hear. The words they had spoken to each other that first day, in a faraway land... As he spoke them to her again, she looked up at him with love and gratitude in her eyes. She couldn't imagine now being away from him, or how she had lived her life so far without him...
But now, in the hospital room, she looked from Kabua to Bethmann and back, trying to hide her surprise. She felt a glimmer of hope, and a part of her actually felt sorry for Bethmann...
If Kabua makes a full recovery, this will not have been for nothing...
"Lord Bethmann," she said gently, not noticing what was happening with one of the Roanians. "I-"
What happened next caught her completely by surprise.
OOC: Shadostan, are you still around?
OOC: I'm here! Curse that server...
IC: As the angered Roanian's hand went to his pocket, Shado's hand went similarly to his sword, held only loosely by its scabbard. When he saw the glimmer of the knife, Shado knew what was going to happen. In a moment, all of the afternoon's talks and actions had come to a point. From here, Shado could see the two possible futures stretched out in front of him. If he stopped the Roanian, he could bring peace to the two warring factions. If he was too late... Shado dared not think about it. He had no time to. Already the knife was drawn, the Roanian was lunging towards the prone Micronesian. Shado's mind flickered back to what he had said earlier, and his hand faltered on his sword.
"Force can solve problems in the short term, sir, but I do not believe it will solve anything in this case."
His hand withdrew from his sword. Time seemed to have slowed as the would-be assassin inched forward, his blade now mere inches from the emissary's neck. Shado moved in that second like what can only be described as greased lightning, and only those present would ever believe it had happened. Shadpo's arm shot out, not towards the Roanian's, but underneath...
With what seemed at first glance like a last-minute attempt at saving the Micronesian delegate's life, Shado had made a point: violence is not necessary. His arm streaked under the knife, across the emissary's neck. As the blade bit down, Shado felt the fabric of his tunic rip, before the cold steel tore into his flesh. The sheer force of the blow drove the knife into his arm, striking bone. Shado bit his lip hard enough to draw blood, but not a sound issued forth from his mouth. Slowly raising his arm, the hand of the astonished Roanian still clasping the knife, Shado looked him in the eye. Their gazes locked, and the Roanian found himself unable to move, so fierce was the glare of the young Shadostanian Lord.
The hospital slowly came back to life around them, and no-one could believe what had just happened. Still silent, Shado prised the numb fingers of the immobile Roanian from the knife, and pulled the blade from his arm. Dropping it to the floor and kicking it away, Shado quickly clamped his hand over the wound, his stare never theaving the eyes of the Roanian.
All was quiet for a few more moments, and then everyone began to talk at once. Shado remained silent, his stern black eyes never wavering.
Before anyone saw what was happening, Bethmann had lunged forward, his rapier in hand. Blue fire coruscated along the blade. "Dishonourable fool!"
The fallen man leapt to his feet, his hands outstretched. Bethmann kicked him down. "Explain yourself."
The attempted murderer stared up. "You dare to attack me, your kinsman? To protect this... this thing?" The man stared at the Micronesian balefully. "He and his people are unworthy of being our lowest slaves! And you would have us assimilate them into the Grand Plan? They should be eliminated!" The man stared at Ayane. "And to go to a woman? Of all things? A woman is to tell us how to go about our business? She is like all their kind, decadent and weak!"
The other Imperials in the room snapped around, and glared at the man. Bethmann shook his head. "What you say grows perilously close to treason..."

Ayane gasped in horror as the blade sunk into Shado's arm. For a moment she felt her heart stop.
Then everything seemed to accelerate into chaos. Doctors rushed her beloved Shado to another bed and began emergency treatment. The would-be assassin was on the floor. Forcing herself to remain calm and dignified, she looked down at the man in cold anger.
"You are a disgrace to your people. Lord Bethmann, be assured I appreciate your sense of honour. Your aide's actions will of course not be held against you." She ordered guards in, and they dragged the attacker away. "We will be holding him for now, then, with your authorisation, we will hand him over to the Roanian authorities. Lord Bethmann, Lord Kabua, I would like to offer you both my sincerest thanks, and wishes for your countries and people to grow and prosper under your two leaderships."
Then she allowed herself at last to turn to Shado, and knelt down by his side.
"My lord Shado..." she whispered, tears coming to her eyes. "What you have done... For one hideous moment, I feared I would lose the man who means everything to me, the man who forever owns my heart. Your courage goes beyond words." She was trying very hard now not to cry. "For once, my beloved, I'm at a loss for words..."
Bethmann shook his head. "I recommend that, should you wish him to live, you keep him in your custody. His insult, even implied, to Her Imperial Highness would mean his torture and eventual brutal decapitation in Novar Ohan." He bowed, and, swooping his cape behind him, left the room.
Kabua fell back, the old, frail man seeming to fade.

After a very, very long pause, Zuma hissed softly beneath the draping blue mask. His thoughts had wondered off elsewhere to a past which he had forgotten; one he had tried so hard to forget. The landscape around him reminded him of a place the invoked warmth, and peace in his cold belly.
"Yesss, pleassse... " The oval pupils of his eyes seem to dilate into vertical slits as he gazed into Shido's eyes. "My country wishesss to form some sort of trade, perhaps a contract asss well."
"Peaceful are my people, but strong is our armies." Again he tucked his arms behind him, each hand clasping at his wrist. "We do not fight our warsss, but fight wars for othersss. You could say we are organized mercanariesss."
OOC: Ditto
Shado smiled weakly, and grasped Ayane's hand with his good arm.
"My love, I know that our love is a force far stronger than mere life and death. Our love is the force behind my actrions, not courage, bravery or plain stupidity." Shado laughed, but lapsed into coughing. After a while he spoke again.
"I assure you, your Highness, that it will take more than the blade of an assassin to keep me from you."
Ayane smiled weakly, her eyes still filled with tears.
"I believe it would, my lord. I cannot think of anything that would keep me from you." She touched his hand softly. "You should rest, beloved."
She looked over to where Kabua was now sleeping. No doubt she would keep the would-be assassin in Ribenia. She had no wish to see him tortured.
"I will remain with you, my lord Shado," she whispered with a gentle smile. "Rest now."

"A trade agreement would be possible," Shioda assured him. "I am certain Her Majesty would also be interested in cultural exchanges. But I am curious. What criteria do you follow in accepting jobs as... mercenaries?"

"A trade agreement would be possible," Shioda assured him. "I am certain Her Majesty would also be interested in cultural exchanges. But I am curious. What criteria do you follow in accepting jobs as... mercenaries?"
"Ah yes cultural exchanges would be needed, to better communicate, and get accustomed to your people. Misunderstandings is not good in trade." With his arms still tucked behind him, his masked head turns and faces his host. "The 'mercanaries' can be given a multitude number of tasks but I will not let them be used as offensive units unless I deem that the attack would be necessary to keep the peace."
Shioda nodded.
"I can understand and respect your position. You have adopted your own practical stance on peacekeeping; I wish you success and prosperity. Her Majesty feels that peace is best maintained or achieved through diplomatic negotiations. Our army exists only to defend our borders."
He stopped. In his opinion, the Queen's ideals were noble, but a little naive. Still, she was trying to do some good in the world, and he was proud to serve such a monarch. He kept his hesitation to himself.
A deep sigh escaped Shado and a broad smile fell upon his lips. As the light faded in his eyes, the last thing Shado saw was Ayane by his side, before he fell asleep. It was a deep sleep, and Shado was glad of its coming, for he had not slept well for many years, and the rest was well needed.
Ayane stayed by his side. In a low voice, she gave orders for the delegations to be escorted back to their places of residence, under increased protection, and for the would-be assassin to be incarcerated.
The rest of the time she just sat by her beloved in silence, her hand on his, looking at him in love and anguish. The thought that she had almost lost him was unbearable. She realised now just how important a part of her life he had become, to the point that she could no longer imagine her life without him...
She sighed softly, shifted a little in her chair and stayed beside the slowly recovering Shado as he slept...

As Shado dreamed, visions of his past flew by his eyes, nightmarish sights of death, destruction, loss...
Shado awoke with a start to find Ayane sitting quietly by his side, her head slightly lowered, dozing. He caught hold of her wrist and squeezed it, waking her up.
"My love," He began shakily, "I feel it is almost time to explain exactly who I am and where I came from."
He brushed his jet black hair from his face, and his eyes, also black as charcoal, looked soflty upon the woman to whom he had given his heart.
"But for now we must conclude proceedings between Micronesia and Roania."
Rising slowly, Shado sat on the bed, regaining his breath. He smiled weakly.
"Go on ahead, I shall catch you up."

He gave Shioda a slight glance, then turned his head as his eyes roamed around to continue on enjoying the beauty of the island. He was proud of his country with sections for a wildlife reserve, but he still remembers that barren wastes. They were scars that were paid for the growth and development of the whole. He hasn't had a vacation for months now, and ruling a country was a difficult task.
"May we head to your diplomatic centersss, and perhapsss... meet your queen, good sir." He turned back to the host. "Time is of the essence, but I do enjoy this place."

Ayane looked at him for several seconds, her eyes filled with questions, lingering fear for him, admiration and love. His words had startled her. She had almost forgotten she still knew very little about him. He was, in many ways, her mysterious hero...
"If you wish, Lord Shado," she said gently, and left him, not without some hesitation. The proceedings were all be complete. Only the Roanians' formal declaration of intent remained to be obtained.
She sent requests for the two delegations to meet with her once again, Kabua being, of course, excused, and sat waiting for them. Her thoughts, though, were mainly of Shado...

OOC: Ribenia isn't an island. :)
IC:
Shioda bowed slightly.
"Of course. If you will come with me, I will show you to the diplomatic facilities. They are some distance inland, but the journey, I assure you, will be short and comfortable. Her Majesty knows of your arrival, and will meet with you as soon as possible." He smiled slightly. "Her Majesty considers greeting guests committed to peace and diplomacy a high priority, which will always take precedence in her schedule."
The doors opened slowly as Shado, supported by another Shadostanian, entered the room. His guard introduced himself as Blade Gladinus, and stood silently by Shado's side. Shado turned to Ayane, and spoke.
"Blade travelled from Shadopstan the moment he found out about the attempt on Kabua's life. An honourable man, but a foolish one." He smiled fondly at Blade. "He was by my side in the split of the Shadonian Empire. A more courageous Rider could not be found, nor one more loyal." Shado nodded at Blade, and the guard left the room. "Are the delegations coming?" He asked.
"I have bid them to come. They should be here shortly." She moved over to him, and supported him, helping him to a chair.
"What have the doctors told you on your condition?" she asked anxiously. "And how goes the situation in Shadostan?" She smiled faintly. "Forgive my questions, Lord Shado; I cannot help but be concerned still."
"I will be fine, the doctors wanted to keep me in hospital overnight, but I decided I needed to be here more. As for the situation in Shadostan...I have heard nothing from Espio nor my other aides. I am beginning to worry, but we must first keep our minds upon this task, no?"
A grim smile crept across Shado's face.
"Concern over one does not wipe out the other," Ayane pointed out gently. "You should contact your homeland, my lord." Her voice soft, she added, "Your first duty is not to me or to my cause, but to your country, your people."
Shado's smile widened.
"As always, you are right, m'lady. I shall send word for my aides to contact me. Blade?"
As if he had heard the whole conversation and was just waiting for a cue, Blade stepped back into the room, saluted smartly, and stalked away again, towards the docks.
"Now..." Shado stretched uncomfortably in his chair. "Where are these delegations? I fear for my peoples' safety, but I will not abandon you this close to the end, m'lady."
"It appears they have been delayed," Ayane said, mildly worried. She looked at Shado. A part of her was secretly grateful at having a little time alone with him. They had had so few opportunities to talk...
"This situation is, I believed, resolved. All that remains to be achieved is an official declaration of intent from the Roanians." A touch of sadness, almost imperceptible, appeared in her eyes. "And then, my lord, you can return to your country, to your people..."
Without seeing it, Shado knew how Ayane felt, and shared the same feeling.
"I..."
Shado was completely lost for words, and fell completely silent. He had not thought of his departure when he came here, only of seeing Ayane again.
"I know not what to say, m'lady" he said truthfully.
"Nor do I," Ayane admitted, lowering her eyes. "We... we both have responsabilities. Each an entire nation depending upon us. You can no more stay than I can leave."
Every word came with difficulty, and she found she could not look at Shado. She was trying to think, find a solution, but her mind was numbed with the thought they were soon to be once more apart. Her heart was breaking.
"And yet, my lord, my beloved..." she whispered, and looked up at him at last, fragile hope in her eyes. "How can I be without you?"
Shado sighed as Ayane looked up. He was constantly amazed by her beauty, and it seemed never to dim or fade, even under the most dire of circumstances.
"..."
Shado's mind was whirring, thoughts slowly clicking into place.
"...I..."
The thoughts seemed unable to form themselves into words, and try as he might, Shado could say nothing.
"I...I cannot leave you again, Ayane." Shado seemed shocked that he had used Ayane's name, but carried on, "It was far too hard for me to be away from you for even such a short time, I could not go on without being b your side. So despite my country, my...my people...I cannot go back. I fear if I do, I may simply die from not being near you. It is within my power to run my country by your side, though it would be difficult, but I am willing to do it. That is, if it is your wish, your highness."
Shado knelt before Ayane, his head bowed, waiting for her answer.
Ayane felt her heart thump hard inside, and her eyes misted over. No words would come; she found it difficult to breathe. Her knees were weak; she struggled not to tremble.
"My lord..." Her voice was a whisper. "Shado... Your people..."
She closed her eyes against the tears rising to them. His words echoed inside her, and she could not deny her feelings for him, overwhelming...
"It is my wish," she said at last, softly. "I... My heart yearns for you to remain by my side. I cannot..." A tear trickled down her cheek. "Lord Shado, if I truly hold your heart as you do mine, I will ask of you one thing. To weigh the consequences of your words. If you speak and discard reason... I... You must give this more thought, my lord..." she said, gently but with difficulty, "before you commit yourself."
His head still bowed, Shado's heart sank, for he knew Ayane was right. But what to do? He was so torn between his people and his love... He had never thought anything could be more important to him than the welfare of his people, but so much had changed since he had met Ayane... He stood and left the room in silence, his head always bowed, never once looking back. Shutting the door gently behind him, he leant against a wall, before sinking to the floor, his grief and confusion finally surfacing in the form of pure anguish.
It was then that fate dealt Shado a truly cruel hand, as Blade marched through the main gate of the Diplomatic centre, an official document in hand, and went straigth to Shado.
"My Lord, Shadostan..." Blade suddenly saw the look on Shado's face, and went through the doors to Ayane. His voice was low, gravelly, but filled with concern and compassion, as were his eyes.
"It seems my Lord Shado is upset, your Highness. Might I be so bold as to ask why?"
Ayane felt her heart break. What had she done? Shado had trusted her with his heart, and in return she had wounded him. She felt tears in her eyes. She loved him, so deeply... When he had suggested staying by her side, her heart had ached with pure joy. She had never dared consider it until then, but now she found herself longing he would indeed stay. The thought of his leaving was unbearable...
But she was being selfish. Her heart and her duty were in conflict. It had been her duty to remind Shado of his responsability to his people.
Now it was his decision. He had to think it through. If he chose to leave... No, she could not dwell on that thought!
"It is a personal matter..." she said sadly. "Is there anything I may do for you?"
"M'lady, let it be understood that not one of the people of Shadostan value their own lives over others. That lesson is taught from a very early age. It must also be said that each person must live their own life, not just for the furtherment of others. My Lord Shado, it seems, is torn between these two simple, yet contradictory teachings. From what I understand of the situation, though I must admit I know little, My Lord is somewhat...ah...infatuated with your royal highness. This has strongly contradicted the idea of Lord Shado's thinking of other people first. I believe that Lord Shado should follow his heart, not his duty. Love is a rare thing, and should not be so quickly dismissed as an inconvenience to the state. I, however, am not a counsellor, but a military man. I have had no luck in love nor peace, but I know whatever descision My Lord comes to, it will be the right one, and I shall support it fully. Perhaps he should spaek alone with you some more. There is nothing in this world which is more important than the love of another human being, m'Lady."
Blade's rough voice finally ground to a halt, and he smiled gently, a strange sight on such a scarred, battle-worn face.
"Go, speak to him. Whatever the outcome, know that you will always have the love of my Lord, and of Shadostan itself."
With that, Blade Gladinus bowed low, and turned to leave. Halfway across the room he stopped, as though he had forgotten something. He turned, and said, "Know also, m'Lady, that My Lord will always be there for you, even if he were on the other side of the world, I do not doubt that he would run all the way to support you." He smiled almost to himself, and asked, "Is there anything you wish of me, m'lady?"
Ayane looked at him, gratitude slowly replacing some of the doubt in her eyes.
"No..." she said softly. "No, you have no doubt already done much good today. I will speak to Lord Shado. This will not be an easy decision, but... your words have helped."
She waited until he had left, then walked out and over to Shado. For a moment, she just looked down at him, solemnly, sadly, desperately, hopefully, then she sat by his side.
"It was not my intention to cause you pain, beloved," she said at last, her voice gentle and barely above a whisper.
Shado lookde up, tears still in his eyes, damp streaks raking his cheeks.
"I had no intention of doing you any harm either, m'lady, I... I cannot envision my life without you... You mean everything to me, and I would do anything to stay by you forever..."
He breathed deeply, trying to stem the tide of emotion threatening to sweep him away.
"I just wish everything were easier..."
"As do I, my lord," Ayane said with a sad smile. In her heart she knew existence without Shado was inconceivable. But she could not tell him that. Not yet. Not until he had made his decision.
She looked at him solemnly, her voice gentle and soothing.
"My beloved, we must decide, together. Know that whatever you feel is the right choice, I will never resent you, nor will I ever cease loving you. If you believe your place must be in Shadostan, I will accept that. It will not mean the end of our love. If your decision is to stay, I will gladly welcome you to remain by my side, forever and beyond." She took a moment to fight back tears, but could not keep them from her voice. "Whatever the outcome, my heart shall always be yours..."
Shado was about to answer when there came a hammering at the front gates. The gates could be heard to open, and footsteps, running towards the pair as they sat in the corridor. A woman in full armour, that of a Shadostanian Rider, turned the corner sharply, and stood before them. Shado too stood, and asked "What news?"
"My Lord, the doors of Kilika Temple have opened! Great beasts, dark and evil, and men clad all in black roam the lands, and they search for you, my Lord! The High Priest has called for your death!"
Shado stood, stony-faced, satring at the ground. He seemed to either be lost in thought or confused, it was difficult to tell which. After a few moment's silence, he dismissed the rider sharply. She saluted, turned, and began to walk away. She had almost reached the corner when she stumbled and fell.
OOC: There is an arrow heavily embedded into her back, but Shado hasn't seen it yet. The feathers on the shaft are a bright blue, and a small scrap of paper is tied to the shaft itself.
Ayane's look of shock and dismay at the Rider's words turned to a gasp of sheer horror as she spotted the arrow protruding from the woman's back.
She rushed over to the fallen warrior, and summoned - with as much royal calm and dignity as she could muster - for doctors. She also issued an order for guards to patrol the grounds and the surroundings of the diplomatic complex. The Rider was unconscious, maybe dying; she lacked the skills to tell.
Only then did she look up at Shado, stricken, tears in her eyes.
"My lord... The decision has been made for us." She almost choked on the words. "You must return to your people..."
She lowered her gaze from him... and saw the scrap of paper.
"My lord Shado..." She took the paper and handed it to him, dutifully refraining from reading it.
Shado looked up as Ayane cried out, but did not move. He waited for Ayane to speak, and then sighed. He spoke quietly, almost to himself.
"Why must fate taunt me so? Have I not suffered enough under this curse? Is there nothing sacred in my life? Can I never be happy?"
Looking into Ayane's eyes, he continued, louder this time.
"It seems indeed that fate has chosen our paths for us. I cannot stay here with my people in such grave danger. I only wish that we could be together...That we were here under different circumstances...I wish..."
Shado stood by Ayane, and looked down at her, the paper still in his hand, unopened, unread. Tears began to form in his eyes, but before he could do anything more, Malign was standing by their side, his eyes burning into Shado's.
"It is time." he said.
Shado said nothing more as he and Malign left the complex, but as he turned the corner, he dropped the note in his hand, which floated to the floor, finally coming to rest near Ayane's hand.
He would leave the female rider under Ayane's care. He had to return with all haste, to once again defend his people from the threat of evil. Once again Shado Umbronican and Reichskristall Malign would ride into battle side by side. They would once more ride to war...for the last time.
OOC: The war will begin soon at The war for Shadostan (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3181576#3181576) The only remaining question is: Will Ayane read the note?
Tears ran freely down Ayane's face as she watched Shado leave, and wept. For a moment, a fleeting moment, it had seemed as though they truly might be united... Now it felt as though her heart had been ripped out, leaving her with a gaping emptiness inside.
"My lord..." Her voice was no more than a whisper, and he was already out of reach. "I will go with you..." She sank to her knees. "I will go with you..."
She didn't notice the doctors come in to tend to the Riders, nor the guards who came to report they had secured the grounds. They held back dutifully and pretended not to see their monarch in tears.
Finally, she remembered the paper Shado had dropped without reading. Swallowing back her tears, she stood weakly, uncrumpled it, and began to read...
