New Drug: XB31 - Press Conference (Open RP)

10-01-2004, 12:04
(OOC: ppl are free to do what they want IC. Act as the press from your country, whatever.)

As "Unity", the national anthem of the Commonwealth, fades on its dying notes, a man in a black suit steps forward, taking his place before the podium.

"My friends, my countrymen, guests from abroad, I welcome you to my homeland, and to this meeting. Today is a very special day. Today, we unveil that which has the power to unify the world! Created here beneath the caring wing of my government, beneath my own two watchful eyes, the Vidrian Drug Industries has created the solution to the world's problems. War, hate, greed. Within a generation, these words will not exist! But I ramble on. I give you Doctor Marius Vidrian, CEO and lead researcher."

A round of applause erupts from the crowd of onlookers as the elderly man crosses the stage, stoping only briefly to shake Maestr Proteus' hand. Adjusting the microphone to his somewhat shorter stature, he begins to speak.

"Thank you for the introduction, Maestro. As the Maestro said, we hold within our graps the power to change the world forever. I give you XB31!"

Producing a small device from his pocket, he points it towards the back of the stage and clicks it. A thin digital screen descends from the ceiling as the lights dim, starting the presentation.

"XB31, as it is currently known, is a strong, non-habit forming anti-depresant. It is structurally similar to many existing drugs save for a few changes. While I obviously cannot go into detail on the process, lets just say that we overcame a few structural hurdles that confounded researchers in the past. In any case, this drug, when administered on a regular basis, effectively eliminates emotion in the concerned subject. This allows the rational part of the brain to control all thoughts and actions. People will no longer be subject to emotional outburts or flawed jusgement. We at Vidrian hope to find acceptance of this in the world and hope for great unity between all peoples. But I've said enough for the moment. Maestro?"

Proteus smiles as he retakes the podium.

"Indeed, emotion is the source of all problems in human society. Eliminate that, and what you have is pure tranquility and equality among all peoples. Unbeknowst to those who are not of this land, this proposal has already won strong support from the people and has already been implimented in the military and civil defense, and soon, it will be given to the general population, provided at no cost by the government. Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a place where nobody is hated, nobody is hurt, where everyone is equal and where unity reigns supreme above all else?" He smiles as he extends his hand to the crowd. "Come friends, join us, let us together, unite the world and stand as one. In a single voice let us speak out against the fallacy of emotion and do away with the cruelties of the past!" Retracting his hand, he adjusts his suit and continues. "I now open this conference to the members of the press. I will not shy away from questions of any nature, asside from details on the particulars of the process."

(OOC: What? I Swear I've never heard of a movie called 'Equilibrium' :P Couldn't be helped though, my society is based on the idea of Libria :P )

The man at the console watches the press breifing and sips his Fago Rootbeer. Completely removes emotion, well isn't that nice. Just make people even more cold blood killing maniacs then some of them are now. Emotion is both a good and bad thing...removing it just...well fucks up the equation even worse...

He switchted to the comptuer screen and wrote his breif report. The end all analysis.
Keep this off the streets and away from any nation that implements it.

(Nice Idea but...scares the shit out of my nation ICly)
Aerion

A white female with black hair tied up with two sticks in an oriental style, black silk Mandarin tunic, and a draping black skirt raises her hand. "Excuse me, Central Aerion News Agency here. What is the implications of this drug on military use, and the ability to improve the performance of a soldier? Also, are there any psychological side effects to use of the drug?". She was known to be from the Central Aerion News Agency (CANA), a branch of the Ministry of Information, and the only government-authorized media in Aerion.

(OOC: Well good, it should scare some nations, that's half the fun :P )

The Maestro furrowed his brow at the question. "Military applications? Well, as we explained, this drug removes the burden of emotion from those who receive regular doses. Again, this allows the mind to be free of illogical thought created by emotion. The short answer is yes, this drug could have potential military applications, but you seem to misunderstand our purpose. The purpose of this drug is to help guide individual nations towards the goal of unity. Unity of purpose, unity of will, unity of mind. This is not a weapon to be used against one's neighbors and we have safeguards in place to ensure that this does not occur." Proteus readjusted his tie slightly. "As for side effects, I believe the Doctor Vidrian is more apt to explain this."

"Indeed. As you can see here" He clicked the presentation ahead a few frames. "The side effects are almost negligible. The only major effect is caused by the process of one's body becoming accostomed to the changes caused by the drug. Initially, it is slightly disorienting. Those on the drug may at first, experience any number of symptoms. The most frequent occurances were lack of the ability to concentrate and a condition that causes the patient to become withdrawn not unlike those with acute clinical depression. However, none of these symptoms persist beyond the first few days of treatment. The side effects come from the lack of emotion itself upon which we have all relied upon to function up until this point. After a few days, the patient is once again able to function normally within society, if not moreso than before."

Proteus stepped forward once again. "Thank you, Doctor. Next question."
