Inquiry Ends as Election Begins

Lavenrunz

Tonight's news is brought to you by the Grace of Her Imperial Majesty, by the benevolence of Gestalt-Fabricken--bringing class to the urban vehicle--and by Porkwiches--the family restaurant that says, "I don't care about diet charts".
(Music for the Royal Fireworks is the fanfare for the Evening News in Lavenrunz. A striking man in a dark suit and a fair haired young woman are shown with a large map of Lavenrunz behind their desk)
"Good evening, loyal fellow subjects. I am Gustaav Munch--"
"And I'm Ursula Fristch. In tonight's national news: an end to the official inquiry on the recent troubles in our country."
"We will also look at the results of the vote of confidence called for in the Volksraad by Chancellor Claudia der Waal--"
"Discussion of the Imperial Space Agencies ideas about furthering the space activity of the nation--"
"And a special report on the city of Atlach. Is this merely a sleepy industrial port--or is it the 'nudist capital of Lavenrunz'?"
Gustaav Munch gravely says, "Prince von Seydlitz announced today that the official inquiry into the uprisings among the military and in the palace is over. We are very privileged to have His Serene Highness connected to our studio.."
(a video screen shows the dark haired, sharp featured man sitting in a comfortable chair. He is in barracks dress and has a commanding appearance)
"Your Serene Highness, what are the overall results of the inquiry?"
"Well, Herr Munch, essentially several persons were found to have gone directly against the will of the monarch, and have signed confessions to that effect. Others were found to have been responding to the state of emergency the country found itself in."
"Well, everyone will specifically want to know--what about the really important ones? Count Mirbach, General von Baden, Admiral Tachteberg, Baron Marienburg?"
Prince von Seydlitz replies smoothly, "The first three have been exonerated, but Baron Marienburg has been condemned as a traitor and will be treated appropriately. He and Count Adendorff and a group of others lied to the people of Lavenrunz and to other loyalists and patriots in order to take advantage of the country."
"I see. But...surely Count Mirbach at least was in collusion?"
"Count Mirbach acted with resolution and courage when the country was leaderless." states Prince von Seydlitz flatly. "And reminded us of the necessity to be done with foreign rule as soon as possible."
"Well, thank you very much, your Serene Highness." (his screen fades to black)
"And in other news," says Fritsch, "Chancellor Claudia der Waal was defeated by thirty five percent in her vote of confidence--which has forced the government to admit defeat to Her Majesty. Her Majesty has decided to maintain the constitution and call for a general election."
(at this, both anchors close their eyes and bow their heads respectfully in appropriate response to the monarch's decision)
(scene shows Arvid Pluskat, leader of the Opposition, saying, "The Lavenrunzian people are tired. Tired of being led around by the nose by an elite who cares more about foreign business than about the welfare of Lavenrunzians at home!")
"But," the voice of Fristch says, narrating, "Is Arvid Pluskat the only opposition?"
(scene shows Count Mirbach leaving the inquiry commission, nearly mobed by excited people waving flowers and flags, looking surprised but charmed and shaking hands)
"More after this message..."

D'ron looked up from the report into Cortana's holographic eyes.

"You've got to be kidding me? Exonerated?"

"So it would appear, Mister President."

D'ron shook his head. "That should have been a bullet between the eyes for each of them."

"I know that. The Empress has just made it legal to challenge the power of the throne."

"I know. This isn't good."

"Eru-Father help us, and them, all."

"Yes, Mister President."

"Goodnight, Cortana."

"Goodnight, Mister President." The hologram vanished.
Dread Lady Nathicana

Nathicana looked over the latest news reports, and chuckled quietly.

"That sly little minx," she said, sipping from her glass of ice water, once again a permanent fixture in her office. "Keeping her own press under control, presenting a united front - very smart. And so many foreigners playing right into the opposition's hands, too. I swear, they make this almost too easy."

She perused over those reports, and others she had relating to the situation. Not only does she keep the public pleased, but she puts him in a position of owing her one, and being able to keep a close eye on him. True, the public loves him now, but popularity has always been a fickle bitch. Now, if only she does as she should, monitoring, digging ...

She thought back to their brief conversations, the vehemence in her voice when she spoke of revenge ever so briefly.

"I almost hope he does something stupid, just to give her the satisfaction. For his sake, he'd best play the meek little 'hero of the Empire' like a good boy. Well done, Aurora. Now for the next steps."

She sat the reports aside, and began penning down a response to Aurora's previous letter, carefully plotting out the phrases and points neccessary, she thought, to achieve her ends, and encourage the young Empress.

Munch smiles. "Welcome back to the evening news. Chancellor Claudia der Waal's vote of confidence has resulted in no confidence in the government."
Fritsch says, "And now the various parties must try to gain the votes of the populace to form a majority in the Volksraad. The government of Chancellor Claudia der Waal is the Constitutionalist Party, who confirm their stance of supporting existing trade agreements and strengthening ties to regions such as Lodoss and Tareldanore. The official Opposition led by Arvid Pluskat wants a more isolationist Lavenrunz focused on Lavenrunzian problems, more self sufficient. They would also like to see a reduced role of the monarch. The Christian-Nationalists would like to see morality strengthened, new trade and diplomatic ties explored, and strong support for the sovereign power of the monarch. They have no official leader yet but in all likelihood this will be Count Mirbach..."

The real criminals are the foriegn imperialists who have thrived on the blood and sweat of generations of Lavenrunzians, not patriots like Mirbach! They have maintained control of Lavenrunz through force of arms but these days draw to a end....This event proves that! Lavenrunz is entering a new age of joy and self determination!
Listen to the silence of your so-called 'allies' , they shun Lavenrunz freedom...they shun her right to chose her own fate...they hate the very idea of the Lavenrunz people free! They do not understand only the people of Lavenrunz can determine their nations destiny...
Now is the day of the people, now is the hour of Lavenrunz!

Sirithil blinked. "They... let... him... off?"

Serendis nodded slowly. "Yes, milady. Apparently, armed insurrection is now legal in Lavenrunz. As long as you don't lie. Much." she answered in a dry and cynical voice.

Sirithil sighed. "Aurora had best know what she's doing. Most leaders - probably myself included - would be busy removing Christian-Nationalists from anything vaguely resembling a position of power, or from anywhere near a gun. ...Turelio, prepare a financial wire to the accounts of Claudia der Waal; run it through as much red tape and shell corporations and numbered accounts and incompetent foreign banks as you please. Make it in the amount of twenty-five million credits, and note that it is a campaign donation, from friends."

The Prime Minister stepped into the Governor's Office as he was eating his breakfast and watching the morning news.

The Governor nodded to the Prime Minister as he sat down and grabbed a piece of toast off the Governor's plate.

Sir Reginald raised an eyebrow.

"Haven't had the time to eat, Sir Reginald. I take it you've heard about the Lavenrunz story?"

The Governor smiled. "Yes, I've been watching it all morning... Count Mirback is finally being seen in a positive light. It's a victory for democracy."

"And insurrections?"

The Governor laughed. "Well, in a state of emergency. I hope he has a good political life."

"And the Empress? And the Elves? Don't think they've missed your support of von Mirbach!"

"They're our allies, Phil. We've fought alongside them through thick and thin... things will get better."

The Prime Minister leaned back in the velvet-upholstered armchair. "I hope you're right, Sir Reginald. I hope you're right. Because what with the Iesus thing, and Street Island..."

The Governor shrugged, his eyes already distant. "Yes, yes... But I'm sure we'll figure something out."

"So, they're letting Mirbach off the hook?" commented the Chief of Staff, Anay Ksanada, with s slight smile. "Interesting. Do we need to choose one of the parties to back sir?"

"Unofficially, yes," said Esana Hiren, the fourth President of Indiastan. "The weakening of the SATO block would, in my mind, be best achieved by supporting the Christian-nationalists, or the isolationists. As it stand, the Nationalists stand a better chance of winning, so naturally we'll support them. Of course, officially, we maintain our neutrality, and plead that other governments should not get involved."

"A nice double standard, neh?"

"Of course. Not that anyone will be really pursuaded to stay out, but at least it makes us appear as if we're looking beyond our own interests."

"Good. But are we going to make a habit of interceding, even only on a monetary scale, in every nation's petty squabbles?" she asked, curious.

"No, not every one," he replied. "Only where it serves to reduce the power of a potential rival. Like the SATO block."

"Good. Because if the reports of protests and riots in the Balochistan and Sindh territories continue, it would be most unfortunite for others to put us in the same situation as Lavenrunz."

"Then let us hope it does not come to that. Now, see that the thirty million credit fund is properly broken up and transferred to the Christian-National party by the end of the week. Alright?"

Count Adendorff's head already had been stuck up on a spike on one of the gates of the Autumn Palace, and was the subject of much inquiry by carrion birds. His body had been taken out and placed on a sea rock for scavengers.
Now, Baron Marienburg and the survivors of the palace attack were taken in an open truck to where a scaffold awaited them at Potter's Field.
The young Baron had quietly wept for his friend, and had willingly signed his confession. He had received a priest and been given what absolution he could receive.
One of the women in the truck started to weep as they rolled along past familiar places of Hofburg. He smiled at her. "Be cheerful." he advised. "We die in good conscience--and will be in good company!"
Arriving at the scaffold, they saw that soldiers of the 15th Grenadiers were arrayed, and a crowd was still gathering. The military cordon was tight and permitted the truck easy entry.
Baron Ehrfurt was among those watching from an erected stand. Marienburg bowed, smiling. He was observed coldly.
As he mounted the scaffold he nodded to the executioner and asked the presiding officer of he might have some words recorded for posterity.
The presiding officer hesitated, he had no conflicting orders, and nodded at last.
"Say that I recited this:
'Thus I entered, and thus I go!
In triumphs people have dropped down dead.
"Paid by the world, what dost thou owe
Me?--God might question: now instead
'Tis God shall repay: I am safer so."
With that, he went and knelt beside the man with the upraised sword. The drums rolled ominously.
"Lord Jesus, receive me!" he prayed aloud as he sword made a silver arc.
The people crossed themselves.

[i]Beloved Empress
This is the day of Lavenrunz, her time has come, We heil her, and the right of her children to govern as they see fit...
But if I may....I beg for these criminals ...I beg in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ...let them live...
Exile them..chain them....but in Christs holy name do not kill them...
Let Christ not only live in your heart, but in the hearts of all who see and hear of your mercy...
But in the end this is your choice, yours alone.
God bless and keep you

Theallas stood (Yes Theallas) on the command deck of the carrier Orthanac, "They let him off? Are they mad? Of course I can understand, that man is a hero to the people, but she let him OFF?!"

"Yes sir"
"Okay, never mind."

"So... they let Mirbach go away?"
"Yes." The man, wearing a dark hat, sitting in the shadows, smoked his cigar as if nothing was happening. His face couldn`t be seen, he was... A mystery. "His position seems to be fairly strong."
"I wonder what will happen next..."
"I`m sure we will witness it. As a matter of fact, i doubt Aurora is able to plot, to make sure he is removed in time. But I`m pretty sure she can keep him in check. It`s an unstable situation, but it may work."
"Well... and if not?"
"If not..." The man hesitated. "If not... well, then we have a serious problem... Reminds me, when did that Iesus embassy in Lavenrunz pop up?"
"Uhhh..."
