Uncertain New Year

"I see that my life is for a purpose. We must drive him from this world and into the fiery pit of hell where he belongs." Typically this said by a person on the NYC subway would not make much difference. However this man, who wore a dirty, bum like cream color trenchcoat and appeared not to have shaven in several days made even other passengers on the typical morning commute scared. As the 6 train pulled into the 42nd Street Station the man got off the train before any cops could arrive to escort him off. They would only miss the man by a few seconds but in the hectic bustle of the morning hours it was enough time to disappear into the crowds of people on their way to work.
Across the city all was quiet. The situation in Lavenrunz was once again the top headlines in all the major news papers while the local ones in the city covered the recent rash of robberies in some communities along with the small surge of murders in the New Year. Today there was not a newsworthy thing going on, that would quickly change however in a matter of half an hour.
Standing out in the rain a news team waited infront of the Capital building on 46th and Lexington. They were the only ones there and they were from one of the local papers. Gregory de los Santos, President of New York and New Jersey had just recently returned from his vacation in Puerto Rico and had been expected to return to work early today. Normally such occassions were not newsworthy however, with the arrest of a foreign leader in Puerto Rico, the news team wanted to ask President Santos who was normally friendly with the press several questions on the issue.
Nathaniel Holn walked quickly, talking to himself along the way. There was simply something wrong with the gentlemen however no one stopped him, and no cops moved to check him as long as he walked and talked solely to himself. Beneath his trenchcoat he kept concealed within his pants a .38 caliber six shot revolver he had kept locked away in the corner of his dingy apartment for safety purposes. Coming up on 46th street he stopped just across the street from the capital building and looked down at his watch. "I am death, I am his death. He will not hurt me anymore. His death will let me sleep."
The motorcade of seven vehicles pulled at a normal speed up to the curve, two motorcycle cops at either end of the seven cars the limo's door was openned by Gregory himself. Stepping out he looked over toward the newscrew and gave them a friendly wave and quickly summoned them to come forward. Nathaniel quickly took in a deep breath, the object of his hatred, misdirected as it was,was insight. He could barely hide his excitement as he moved across the crosswalk and proceeded forward toward the capital building. Making it appear as if the President was the least important thing on the planet to him.
Not one officer paid any attention to the man as he moved, it had been years since a communist insurgent had shot Gregory and they were no longer considered a threat. Infact everything was rather stable, popularity polls in NYNJ showed that people were generally pleased with the job Gregory was doing at home. No one liked his international policy but few could complain. Stopping just before the steps of the capital building a massive office tower/sky scrapper, Nathaniel turned around and began to walk toward the direction of Gregory.
"It caused quite a stirring up here when we saw the leader of another nation arrested Mr President..."The interview was just getting underway and the camaraman was standing far enough back and in such an angle to catch Nathaniel enter the side and begin to withdraw the gun. His attention adverted however until the first of the six shots began to ring out. The middle age man fumbled abit with the camara as he was pushed out of the way by OSS agents who were now moving President Santos away from the scene. The last image caught on the camara was Gregory's body slumped back slightly red covering his white shirt.
The camaras signal was lost though as OSS agents tackled Nathaniel Holn to the ground and proceeded to literally beat him into submission. Across the street a tourist with a digital videocamara of his own caught the rest of the events unfold as the motorcade pulled away from the capital building and quickly turned a corner out of sight...
Federal Republic News Network-
"We break in on your local television coverage for this important announcement. President Gregory de los Santos, has been shot as he gave an interview to a local news team. He was immediately rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital and we have yet to recieve word on his condition at this time. We have been told that one suspect has been taken into custody at the moment by OSS agents. The man's name is Nathaniel Holn, an ex-Federal Republic Army soldier who served in the 191st Division, the same division President de los Santos once served in. We have no more information however when it comes to us we will share it with you..."

Our prayers go out to President de los Santos, our noble ally and friend of my revered mother. May his recovery come quickly. This is an awful thing to happen, but we must not lose hope in the cause of goodness because of it.
To the nation of New York and Jersey, the prayers of Lavenrunz and her Empress go to you as well; may your leaders be well protected, able to be wise and judicious, and may you feel safe from the tide of anarchy that threatens us all.

The Federation of Glorious Humanity sends our condolences and prayers, and hopes for a speedy recovery for President de los Santos. It is saddening to see that even in this day and age hatred and terror still reach out their clawed hands to seize victims. We are glad to hear that the shooter is in custody and will do no further damage.
Again, we wish President de los Santos a swift and trouble-free recovery.

"In tonights top story we take you to some rather disturbing footage. If you have children in the room right now it would be advisable to have them leave the room...footage released from a camarateam on the scene showed as President de los Santos was carried from the motorcades limosine..." The image of the newsroom faded to black and then came back with footage of Gregory being carried out of the limo by two secret service agents and placed on a stretcher. The both of them are covered in blood as a third one climbs onto the stretcher and begins to do chest compressions as Gregory is rushed inside of the ER quickly surrounded by medical personnel. The footage dies and is returned to the two newsroom anchors as they showed little sign of emotion to the events, "Doctors have been quiet as to the condition of President de los Santos however people who work inside of the hospital say President de los Santos has currently been operated on for the past several hours..."
At the steps of capital building where security went from lax to almost fortress-like in light of the events the Vice President, Fransico Generosa was placed incharge of the nation. The question however was if this was a permenant change or if only it was temporary. Few knew any solid facts of Gregory's current condition, not even OSS agents knew at the moment how the President was doing, or if he would be President much longer. They did however have a job to do, and quickly the movements and rumblings of the government began.
"Senator Gunthar, it is my duty to inform you that your fellow Senate members have chosen you to lead an investigation into the lax-security of President de los Santos, and as to the motives of the gunman. The commission is being granted the power to call forth any witness they deem nessecary to uncovering the events in question, as well as any and all files." The sixty two year old Senator groaned slightly as he read the message outloud to several other Senators from his party who he had chosen to be on the commission with him. "I hope none of you planned to take any vacations anytime soon." The men mumbled a general dissatisfaction with the statement of truth but no one really voiced a serious complaint as Senator Peter Gunthar a man with close to 24 years in civil service moved over toward the intercom on his desk. "Beth, get me the head of the legal office, tell him I need to see him now."
At the OSS Main Office located in Brooklyn the events had, had a domino effect. The head of Presidential security had resigned in disgrace along with his assistant to that division, and the current head of the entire OSS was underfire for its failure to protect such a national figure. "Nathaniel Holn...who the hell are you and why did you shoot the President..." came a a mumble from OSS Director Franklin Kenneth to the field agent he had planned on sending out into the field. "Listen I want you to contact the FRA and get me his service records. They wont be able to refuse. I want you to move fast as well, the Senate is holding a comission and I want to keep as much information from going public as possible. At least until we know what we're dealing with. Okay Will?" The agent nodded his head quietly and moved to leave the office calling back as he reached for the doorknob, "No problem sir. I'll call you when.." "NO...dont call. I want you to get the documents and return right back here with them. I dont trust the cellphones, when you get back your going to be issued a department throwaway. " William nodded and stepped outside of the office to go do what he had been ordered to do.
Nathaniel Holn sat bloodied and handcuffed to a chair inside of an office at the 19th Preceint Stationhouse. Slouched forward blood ran from his nose and it was unknown to everyone except Holn who realized his right eye was hit in such a way that for the time being until he recieved medical attention it was detached from its socket. Two detectives with the NYPD circled Holn sleeves rolled up glaring down at the man. "Now why the hell would you want to go and shoot President de los Santos?", one of the detectives asked to which the reply for the last thirty minutes of this session came "Nathaniel Holn, Sargeant,Federal Republic Army,Serial Number...." "Wrong answer.."One of the detectives let loose a small vicious punch to the kidneys of the handcuffed prisoner which caused him to shift and cough up a small thick stream of blood."Geeze this dumb fvck is bleeding all over the place, a few more minutes of this then we'll turn him over to the EMTs." The session would continue on for another fifteen minutes before they allowed Holn to get any medical attention.

The lightbulbs flashed and went off and suddenly the doctor forgot what he was going to say.Standing at the podium he looked around and what seemed like minutes was only a few seconds before he managed to get out his first few sentences,"Good evening ladies and gentlemen, after tweleve hours on the operating room table it is safe to report that President de los Santos is in the intensive care unit, listed under critical condition. He suffered four gunshot wounds earlier in the way, a second shot to the lower torso missing his liver by meer inches. Another round went through his left arm and it cleanly went through. The next two bullets gave us the most problems as they hit the upper torso barely missing his heart which is a good thing but entering the right lung and caused it to collapse. The lung was repaired and refilled however it collapsed several times during the operation. For a period of three minutes President de los Santos was considered clinically dead, however with the aid of a defibulator was brought back to life and we continued on with the operation. At the moment President de los Santos has not regained conciousness. Now if you'll excuse me it's been a long operation and I'm going to see if I cant get some quick sleep around here." The doctor stepped off from the podium as reporters stood from their chairs and yelled out their barrage of questions. To tired to listen or care he exited from a door on the left and hospital security stopped anyone from going by.
Meeting deep into the night with the law offices of the Federal Congress, Senator Gunthar had begun making a preliminary listing of people he had planned on calling, files he planned on getting, and was already in the process of doing the preliminary report to the government and people. It wasnt a pleasent job, and he knew he would have to deal with the OSS sooner or later ,and if not the OSS, he'd have to deal with the rigid government system which liked keeping secrets. It was going to be one long commission Gunthar just hoped God would let him die before it was over."Senator....Senator,are we done for the night?" The legal aid called, part of a team of eight other legal aids they had ordered out and at least two were feeling the effects of msg poision which put them asleep. Senator Gunthar who was still off in his own world just nodded his head and waved the legal aid out and they began to file out of his office. "Oh yeah God, wont you please take me now..."

"Gregory.....Gregory..." The voice called as Gregory moved down the long hallway which seemed to be tilted at an odd angle. As he ran toward the light he felt as if he was going slower than he should have. Even as he stopped before the light things didnt seem right. A blink and the hallway disappeared for a hedgegrow. The white hospital gown he was wearing had turned into green combat fatigues, holding a Thompson Submachine gun after so many years it had gained the status of being NYNJs unoffical Ak-47. Of course various improvements over the years had been made to make the gun slightly better in terms of accuracy at a range which made the .45 rounds even more deadly at close range.
"GREGORY!" The shout came over his right shoulder and he snapped his head to the side. It was utterly quiet after that except for the whiz of bullet which passed his head. Ducking down his left hand on the PASGAT helmet he wore he looked for some cover in the field. He couldnt find the voice that called his name, nor could he find where the bullets were being shot at him from. But none of it mattered at the moment. He was being shot at and he was somewhere, but where he couldnt pinpoint. He spotted a small stonewall which would provide excellent cover from the fire and he proceeded at full dash toward it. Jumping toward it he dove forward and rolled slightly. Time seeming to stand still and freeze as he rolled on the ground and came to a stop behind the rock. When he was certain that he wasnt going to get the top of his head shot off he reached into a pants pocket and pulled out a map openning it up enough to ready the countries name. "Marathon..."as he said these words soldiers from the 191st Division moved from out of their spots in the hedgegrove and began to fire toward the direction of where the shooting had come from.
Greg moved onto his feet the Thompson raising up as he let loose a burst of several rounds. His right hand moving up and pointing forward, his body moved on its own, he had no real control of it at the moment. "Go!Come on! We've got them on the run!" Moving from his position of cover Gregory looked over at the rest of his squad, suddenly the hallway was forgotten and he had his task at hand. "Sargent Holn, get your squad in gear damnit! That hill isnt going to capture itself." The Sargeant looked over toward Gregory and mumbled something before shouting out orders to the troops behind him and leading his group of soldiers forward on the charge.
Gregory knelt down once more on a single knee and called over for the radio operator to hurry over toward him."Battalion HQ, this is Platoon Echo Niner Five Seven,we have the Insurgent Force on the run requesting armored support to hold our position..."
The Marathon Civil War was the first major conflict New York and New Jersey ever undertook. The government a pro-democracy,pro-western style government monarchy had been overturned by insurgents within the government and a civil war had broken out soon afterwards. Troops from NYNJ made up just a handfull of the dozens of countries that fought in the brief conflict on both sides. All of this was in history books though and the minds of those who fought in the brief civil war which claimed more lives than it should have. A nurse walked into Gregory's room and made sure that all the tubes were connected and everything was plugged in securely. OSS and NYPD had literally barricaded the hospital floor, few would be able to get in unless they were one of the onduty nurses with more than seven years experiance in that hospital or a doctor with more than four years experiance in that hospital.

The grey Crown Victoria pulled up to the Ft Tyrone Military Base in Northern Manhatten, a small facility which housed tons of documents all of them open to the general public, but in military fashion in order to prevent the knowledge from becoming widely public the records only had two copies, one of them on paper and the other on disk drives kept off of the main net on a seperate military computer net. Stepping over toward the drivers side was a Military Police Officer who flashed a light into the drivers side and knocked on the window which was promptly lowered. "Can I help you sir?", "Yes officer my name is Agent Flores. I'm with the Office of Strategic Services, I'm here to meet with the Commanding Officer of your base." The MP nodded slightly and moved back away from the car and into the small guard booth. Returning only a few moments later the guard raised the gate and waved Agent Flores in.
They had gotten to the Ft. Tyrone base earlier in the day, a small team of lawyers from the Federal Senate Legal Offices, they were led by an assistant District Attorney for Manhatten. It had been four hours since they had arrived and with court papers demanded unrestricted access to the public records of the base. The current record room was really a massive hangar stuffed with filing cabinets and rows upon rows of shelves with boxes of records. Adjacent to that building was the base Commanders Office where Agent Flores arrived and talked for only a few moments before storming from the office with the base CO behind him heading toward the direction of the hangar. The legal team slowed down slightly as a slam at the hangar door registered throughout the entire modified record room. "All of you stop right now! These records are considered classified as of now!" Agent Flores's face was beat red as he moved through the rows looking down each one. The Manhattan ADA moved to intercept the OSS Agent and pressed the Senate decree into the mans chest, "I'm sorry Agent, but your authority is not reconigzed over a Senate order. Colonel I'm sorry to bother you again but we're gonna be here for quite sometime and the Agent here is only going to disrupt us from our search." The Colonel smiled and nodded he was only happy enough to have the little OSS prick removed from his installation. Of course calling the MPs wasnt nessecary as Flores left under his own problem. When out of the hangar he pulled out a cellphone and placed a call, "Sir, its Agent Flores, we have a problem, and I'll explain when I return...yes Sir.Understood sir."
The only person to keep a round the clock watch over Gregory had been the doctor who had operated on him. Not because he felt bad for the President, for he did not like his foreign policy, or much of his domestic but he felt slightly sad that the man had no family. However had that been all he would not have stayed, he was tasked with keeping the leader of NYNJ alive and he didnt want to risk being to far away. Not that he didnt trust any of the other doctors, he just believed himself like all other doctors to be the best of his field. As another hour passed and another beep was heard from the heart monitoring machine a nurse came in to check on Gregory's tubing and caught sight of the sleeping doctor who she covered with a blanket. Everyone in the hospital was finally coming down off their pins and needles as three days had passed since the shooting, the nation was still gripped in the graphic footage of what had happened and the President arrival at the hospital. Now news agencies were concerned about who Nathienal Holn was and why he had committed his action, was he a political radical, or a demented soul?

"What's over there?" Gregory moved forward from where he was standing, a light in the distance, a small flicker, nothing much really except it was an attractive sniper target during the night. Beside of him was a friend of his a Second Lietuenant who had his own squad in the same company. "I dont know...we should check it out though." Both soldiers lowered the Thompson Submachine Guns from the straps on their shoulders and into their hands moving slowly forward. Stopping just several feet away Gregory motioned to his friend to circle wide right and he would go left .A silent nod given the two parted and then reconverged quickly on the group of soldiers who were sitting around. "I'm the enemy, and your all dead," Gregory said in a disgusted fashion he sniffed the air and looked further disgusted snatching the blunt from out of a soldiers lips. "Not only are you all derelict in terms of duty but are you guys out of your friggin minds? On your feet. All of you, now." The three caught soldiers stood up from the ground and Gregory squinted in the low light to make out who each person was. He didnt know the two privates, but he knew the Sargeant. "Sargeant Holn, do you have any explination as to why you've committed your actions?" It was a dead silence save for the local wildlife and all Gregory could do was shake his head. He motioned for his friend to keep him covered as he began to disarm the three, "Your all going to be placed under arrest and put in the stockade.Lets go folks, hands up single file." The 2nd Lieutenant moved ahead infront of the line leading the small group as Gregory brought up the rear with the Thompson in hand....
It wasnt till about 3 in the moring before the lawyers gave up and decided just to take boxes upon boxes with them. Agent Flores had left not short after he arrived, but he did not go far. He drove around for abit before parking his car some way down the road waiting for the lawyers to passby. It was difficult not to sleep when others were fast in slumber,it was one of the reasons why the lawyers had just decided to pack up anything really relavent and return it back to the main senate building. "It'll be good to pass this stuff off to the interns. I dont think I can stare at another medical record." Another lawyer chimed in as he loaded a box into the trunk of one of the cars, "How about the service records for some of these troops.I swear if you took all the brass in the 191st Division you could build a new office tower. Thank god President Santos was only in one division, my brother was in six or seven before he left the army due to retirement. " The lawyers all agreed that they enjoyed the fact the job was easier. After about 15 minutes of loading record stacks the group of four cars began to pull out from the base and down where Agent Flores had parked his car. The lawyers had arranged it with the military to get an escort as it was late at night and they were carrying hundreds of records some of which could be disposed of others which needed to be returned.
Flores moved down in the drivers seat slowly as the blue light was visable in his side mirror, the Military Police Humvee rolled right by followed by four government vehicles and then a second Military Police Humvee. When the line of cars had passed Agent Flores sat up once more and pondered his course of action, he gazed down at his watch and wondered...he needed to report back to the HQ soon, he had to get to the records before the civilian government could dig deeper than they were suppose to. A lot of heads would roll, people in influential government positions and in the buisness world of NYNJ. Flores had no idea of this though, but his boss did. At the OSS Headquaters , Director Kenneth was up still, but he wasnt working, he was standing in the parking lot of the OSS Building at one end and across from him a group of men, and women had assembled. They were all silent and staring at the OSS Director. A voice called out but from the distance the Director couldnt make it out who was talking only that it was the sound of a male voice, "We used our influence to get you, your job. We expect to be protected. The country can not find out its own history. You must take whatever steps you can to stop it from becoming public, if you dont, we suggest you ready a plane ticket to Iesus Christi..." Director Kenneth nodded his head slightly and gave no explinations, or excuses. At this level none would be tolerated.
Nathaniel Holn was brought into Metropolitain Hospital on the Upper East Side of Manhatten because of the injuries he sustained at the hand of OSS Protective Agents, and Police. Aside from President de los Santos, Nathaniel Holn was the second best protected person in the city. But not by choice, Holn was placed on suicide watch. The cops would have been more than content to allow himself to kill himself but NYPD Command had made it known to the officers on detail that many questions remained to be answered. President de los Santos had a strong following among law enforcement and the military and it was an open question in the news just how excessively beaten was Holn, and if anything would actually be done about it. Popular opinion polls which were generally against torture were evenly split over the issue of how badly should Holn have been beaten, with few saying he should have escaped without being seriously harmed.

The heart machine went flatline and doctors and nurses poured into Gregory's room. A crash cart brought in this was the first time he had flatlined in several days. They figured he had been in the safe, now it appeared to not be the case. The world of Marathon inside of Gregory's mind faded to black, each time the paddles were used on him it was a new scene. It took several minutes before they could restart his heart and once again Gregory found himself walking down a dark corridor with the same kind of light. Except this time around there were no calls of his name, just the rumbling of trucks. As Gregory reached the end of the tunnel it faded and he found himself in the back of a 5 1/2 ton truck part of a convoy. The civil war in Marathon was over and Greg was home but his company had been transfered over to a different facility. They werent going to be discharged like they had promised. The conversation in the back of the truck carried on between enlisted as rumors spread as to where they were heading. Gregory knew though, the new posting was to Brookhaven Military Research Center, it was a guard posting. But Greg wasnt allowed to tell that to the enlisted, for whatever reason he could not figure out. The truck began to slow down and turn off to the side from its previous movement and then came to a complete stop. Gregory lowered the back hatch and jumped down onto the pavement below. "Okay Sargeant, get your men into line." Walking away from the row of trucks which were parked Gregory met up with his CO and the other Officers in his Company. Gregory hoped this posting would be over soon but he kept that opinion to himself as the Captain went into further detail about the operation "Folks we're gonna be here for awhile, the other guard unit got rotated out and its a six month posting..." The CO continued on for a few more minutes routine stuff...then came a bombshell, "...lastly folks, some of you are getting picked to be tested on, all tests are top secret, I want you to relay this to your men. Now when possible it will be on a volunteer basis, they're going to use prisoners from Levinworth a good majority of the time." Greg could only blink at that and respond with light acknowledgement; this posting was certainly going to be different.
Federal Republic News Network:
"Unconfirmed reports from inside Mt Sinai hospital have said that President de los Santos has died for several minutes at least twice in the past four days. Outside of the hospital some citizens have stood silent vigil placing flowers and cards across the street from the hospital as the grounds of the hospital themselves have been put offlimits to the general population. Today when a spokesmen for the hospital was asked how President de los Santos was doing, the response seemed to be grim."
President Gregory de los Santos will undergo further surgery in the next few hours to remove part of a bullet we had missed earlier on the X-rays. The bullet fragment is lodged close to President de los Santos's heart in the upper right part of his lung. He has unfortunately not regained conciousness. That's all I have for you at this time, no further questions will be taken at this time.

The surgery on Gregory had went well, it took only a few hours before they finished what they should have done the first time around. Now he was in the recovery room of the hospital. His fingers moved slowly, it had been several hours after the surgery and he was back in the recovery unit. Breathing on his own although it was slightly labored he no longer had a tube sticking down his throat. The dream was over and he didnt remember a single thing about it. Nathaniel Holn was still a name he recongized but would not remember outright."Nu..." His voice cracked started off strong but then got weaker and faded out. Clearing his throat he hit his hand several times on the bed grasping at the bedsheats and letting out a scream as he sat up in the bed. Two soldiers immediately burst into the recovery room at the sound of the scream to find Gregory sitting up in bed looking dazed and confused.
"We need a nurse!" One of the soldiers shouted down the hallway and one came racing into the room along with the operating surgeon. "President Santos, please lie back in bed." Gregory was clutching his chest as he rolled over on his side the pain unbearable. Several more nurses came into the room one with a shot of pain killer. "Mr President, please lay back and relax." One nurse said as the other jabbed him in his arm with the needle and administered the shot of codine. The two soldiers quickly moved back out into the hallway and back to their post getting out of the way of the medical staff. It was only a matter of moments though before everyone in the hospital knew of the good news.
A few hours later Gregory lay sedate in bed, his head off to the side he stared out of a window. The parade of doctors and nurses who were there to ensure he was alright, he had ordered out of the room. He was on a codine drip for the time being because of the pain and it pretty much kept him semi aware of his surroundings. He was good about keeping his nerve when taking such drugs and he knew full well the effects of them if he gotten used to them. To keep his mind short however he had ordered a chess board be brought to his room with similar pieces. The only problem now was finding an actual opponent. If he saw another nurse, doctor,OSS agent, or soldier he was going to kill himself. He hated doctors and hospitals, and the sole fact he was shot was the only thing that kept him there. Although he had pondered having himself discharged early he knew it would be a mistake. So he waited in bed sitting and looking at a chessboard.
