[OOC: This isn't really an RP, just me telling a story... Hope you enjoy, comments are appreciated.]

A made for TV documentary that aired on Liberation Day.

Many years ago during the modern age, Konanian Resistance Fighters fought a war to win their independece from Cartaani forces.

This is their story.

Thousands of Them have died today, Makkhem thought. Not that he cared much-- it wasn't his job to care, it was his job to make sure that the occupied Konanian Peninsula was exploited to the last drop of oil, the last crumb of iron, the last nugget of gold. And if some people died because they got in the way, it was perfectly fine with him. That was Their problem, not his.

And from his comfortable office in Emafera, the seat of the Cartaani Occupational Government of this dirty province, he could not have cared less. Death was alien to him, he had no conscience for such things.

From his small home in Kareto, however, Nathan Fredera could not have cared more. In those days, the Konanian National Army was born. Was it not his people who were taken away, to the place where they would die? Was it not their property that was being carved up for the greed of the Emaferans? Was this not their nation, their lands, their home? The KNA was formed of people who believed that not only was it their right, it was their duty to fight the tyrant who would kill them all for his own power.

And so, the fighting began.

But overthrowing an empire is no simple task.

First Light

The Nerano Cliffs are about 70 kilometers outside Kareto. Two particluar rises, having no proper name, were known as the Nerano Twins. Between the two ran a road to the soutwest toward the city. Because of its rocky terrain and the bottleneck created by the two mesas, it was the perfect place for an ambush.

An explosive device, properly set in the path of an oncoming transport, could stop its movement, Fredera had noted, years before. If made properly, it could be almost silent through the trucks armor, giving the impression of a slipped track or a broken axel. At 0724 that morning, the KNA knew the next of the convoys would be moving through the pass. It was a line of four trucks-- The first and the last of armed soldiers, the middle two would be used for transporting the prisoners.

KNA's first goal was to stop this convoy from making it through the Nerano Twins Pass.

Fredera looked back toward the hand-picked group he had chosen. Some looked nervous, others looked determined. All of these were armed, most with a type of shoulder-fired missle, a little smaller than an RPG.

"If you can't do this--" he began, but was answered by the rapid headshakes from the crew. They were all going through with it.

He looked down the side of the ridge toward the group lying in wait, these armed with assualt rifles. He threw a rock toward the road, watching as it hit the bottom. He was answered by two flashes from a mirror below. They were all ready.

The trucks approached right on time, or four-point-two-seven seconds early by Fredera's watch. Below, the process had already began. The bomb was set, and the "setter" rolled back into the rocks below. The first truck was disabled, its driver got out to take a look, thus stopping the convoy. A few soldiers stepped outside, probably to stretch their legs. Poor fools, Fredera thought. They'd die quicker if they had stayed inside...

One quick thumbs up toward the group conveyed the silent message: Go. Simultaneously, the four rocketeers fired their weapons, each at one truck. The startled Provincial Security soldiers and the driver who were outside armed up, startled, only to be met by the guns of the small force on the bottom of the cliff. One uttered a curse, realizing his fate. They were killed immediatly, and their bodies buried nearby.

This repeated itself many times across the Konanian province-- at the cities of Nannis, Solaris, Akhen, and small towns scattered across the peninsula. The trucks were left burning, the smoke visible across the countryside conveyed a loud message, though silent: We don't want you here.

The first operation of the Resistance had gone on smoothly, with only one casualty with the KNA. However, all knew that the retribution by the occupying forces would be swift and bloody. They were right.

Night of Death

The Caantani would not be so easily moved.

In the middle of the night, government troops marched into the cities of Konania. Makkhem felt a need to make examples. Within hours, the city of Avalon, the ancient seat of government before the occupation, was in flames, most of its hundred thousand citizens either dead or carried away to the deathcamps.

Caantani troops, having no reason to stay in the battered town, left without a trace. Those unfortuanate enough to survive-- mostly children and elderly, those seen unfit for work-- were left to starve, or die from disease in the streets of the once great walled city. When aid finally arrived from the KNA, they were treated with a horrendous sight-- one could hardly believe the city ever stood.

Makkhem felt that this would discourage the rebelling forces. He could not have been more wrong-- in a matter of weeks, the KNA swelled from less than ten-thousand rag-tag troops to well over one hundred thousand citizens from all over the nation.

And silently, Fredera swore to himself, as many did that night, that he would watch Makkhem die for this crime against his people.

The Storm of the Seas

The Konanian Gulf Military Facility was on the northern coast of the peninsula, outside Nannis. It was a factory and storage facilty -- inside was a variety of armaments. Staffed by a group of professional soldiers, the best trained in the Occupational Security Service, the Caantani felt that it was as impregnable a fortress the Caantani nation itself.

Once again, Makkhem had fatally underestimated the will of the KNA.

Makkhem had felt that by putting the facility on the edge of a cliff, he could avoid most of the trouble of a possible sea landing. So, he deemed it unnesscessary to commit troops from his already overextended force to defend the backside of the complex, leaving this the soft underbelly the Occupational Forces.

And Fredera was going to tear it open. Fifty thousand of his troops had been commited to this, it was considered a do-or-die operation. They wouldn't have any armored weaponry, and since the occupation didn't believe in air support-- Fredera felt that they must be too stupid or something-- he was glad he didn't have to worry about that.

The only vehicles they had, in fact, were old trucks, be they jeeps or the original Amvees, mounted with gatling weaponry or missles from before. The fast, small transprot with approximatly missles and guns made up the naval division of the KNA, that would harrass the Occupational Navy while the raid occured.

Truthfully, it was a very pathetic force.

This raid would fix that-- The KGMF was said to contain a large amount of armored weapons, including a wide variety of tanks. If they could get in here, they could press on to nearby Nannis, and then directly to Emafera, through the Central Basin. The deathcamp was along the way, and they intended to liberate it and leave their mark.

The raid would run differently from the others, mostly because it would happen in the middle of the night rather than the early morning raids of before. Great care had been taken to move his forces into position without alerting the enemy, and so far, the element of surprise seemed to have held.

At exactly 2231 Local Time, the Caantani Occupational Navy noticed an number of unknowns on it's radar. A cruiser went out to check it out, not knowing that they had wandered into one ofthe KNA's killboxes. They found themselves under fire by the many fast moving attack boats in the Gulf. Unable to retaliate due to the speed of the attack, the ship sunk within half an hour. The KNA-Navy gunboats pressed forward, hunting for and attacking the small occupational fleet, while the missle boats were able to make their way toward the coast nearly unhindered. Upon seeing the facility straddling the cliff, they opened fire.

The Raid at Northern Coast

Back on land, Fredera's forces saw the explosions of the missles impacting the back of facility. The soldiers defending the building moved to the back, while some-- too few, Fredera thought-- remained in front to defend from the attack they knew had to come.

The KNA moved forward, killing everything they could. They had breached the defenses an hour later, as the transports on the sea began to unload and the soldiers began their climb to the top of the cliff. Despite the heavy support from the missle boats below, many of the soldiers died as their ropes were cut or they were shot on the way up, until a well-aimed missle destroyed the defensive tower that did them so much harm.

The forces on the front side pressed forward through the massive facility, having to abandon their trucks to rush into the heavily guarded buildings. One by one, the buildings were taken as Occuaptional forces found themselves outnumbered and outmanuvered by the KNA, who was advancing from both sides and had already taken the main storage facilty. Resistance was not futile, but useless, as there was little reason to fight.
The small Occupational fleet found themselves stranded inbetween the captured facility and the fast moving KNA-Navy. Refusing to surrender, they were picked off one by one, inflicting heavy casualties on the KNA forces. From then on, the occupational navy was rendered useless, the bulk of their small fleet having been destroyed or seriously disabled.

The last of the forces guarding the complex surrendered as soon as a plan to detonate the facilty failed when they found their weapons insuffeciant and their communications to Emafera and to friendly forces in Nannis cut. Rather than killed, those that did not commit suicide were held prisoner, and told they would be released and sent home at the end of the war.

The KNA's costliest raid left them with about forty-seven percent causualites, and yet is seen as their greatest victory. The KNA was now in possesion of armored weaponry and munitions and would be able to attack the enemy forces at Nannis.

The Battle for Nannis

Nannis was the only city the KNA intended to liberate before pressing on the Emafera. The attack was rushed, and in the weeks days since the attacks on the storage facility, Occupational Forces had felt attempts to retake the complex would be certain suicide, and focused on preventing any further advance. Nannis had since been fortified, and life for the citizens of the city had become even more miserable than it already was.

There would be no overriding strategy for the attack on the port of Nannis-- the city would have to be taken head on by the forces, while being attacked from the sea by the weakened naval division.

It would be another night strike, and there would be no element of surprise, since the Occupation expected this. They also knew that they had little chance of crushing the mass of forces coming toward them, so focused on inflicting as many casualties as possible before fleeing to the south.

Artillery was used to soften up the defenses, and to strike the bunkers outside the city. Occupational forces responded with their own artilerry, forcing the KNA to keep shifting around to avoid revealing their positions. A gun would fire, move a few feet, and fire again. The going was painfully slow, and Fredera wanted to lure the enemy out of the city. However, the methodical shelling by both KNA artillery and the offshore ships was enough to silence the enemy weapons.

When the enemy did not move forward, they were forced to attack. The next few days of warfare had their own costs, as both sides found themselves at a stalemate within the town. Only when the KNA was able to push through the enemy line across the highway did the defensive forces crumble and retreat, being followed by the KNA.

Nannis was once again free, but in shambles.

Deathcamp

For all the blood of battles won, nothing could have prepared the KNA for what they saw here. The cold blooded methodical killing was what was considered to be the greatest atrocity of the war. The restraint of KNA soldiers was tested as many felt the need to kill those they had captured at the Konanian Gulf facilty. The Konanians who were sent here suffered a fate worse than death, as they watched those they had known for years die in the gas chambers. After extraction, the camp was shelled and burned.

Once again, it was decided-- Makkhem was to die.

Emafera

Emafera, the seat of Occupational Government was being evacuated by road, but a Konanian siege of the city prevented anyone from entering or escaping. The city was shelled for days on end, and the Konanians finally moved on the city. Enemy forces were given no quarter, and all who refused surrender were massacred by vengful KNA soldiers. The Capitol building, the last stronghold of the Occupation was taken weeks later. Makkhem was taken prisoner when the building was rushed and killed. The city, like the deathcamp, was burned, and the KNA marched on to Avalon, the city chosen to be the capitol of the Federal Republic.

Konania was free.
