Hello, The Dominnion of Jacobist Peoples is a new nation, in a new region. I thought I'd take this time to explain a little bit about what the Dominion is all about:
A Guide to the Dominion
Politics:
The Dominion centers around one idea: Jacobism. A society ruled by the intellectuals. When children are born in the society they are sent to a state-run primary school. After that they are given the choice to further they’re education, or to go off and live on one of the state-run “social farms”. These “farms”, really large communities built underneath geodesic domes, are self-sufficient. They grow and raise their own food, plus produce food for the rest of the Dominion. Life is simple and pleasant in the social farms, the only contact with the outside world being with the regional governor, or “Watcher”. These governors are intellectuals appointed by the Consul (head of the state) to make sure the farms are docile and meeting their quota. The Consul sets quotas, and if it is not met then the regional governor can do what he whishes to correct it. However, the Watcher is observed carefully, and is not allowed to abuse his position. If the quota cannot be reached due to drought, disease, or Acts of God then it is forgiven. The Consul is elected by the intellectuals, but after assuming power becomes full dictator until he/she dies, then a new Consul is elected. There is some resentment between the intellectuals and “the Others” as they have come to be called, but its not as bad as it was when the system was first adopted. They population is divided about half and half between Inlects and Others, the only other group being the Misfourtuned, those with mental and physical disabilities.
It is illegal for an Inlect to marry an Other, though any Other may become an Inlect after appropriate re-education processes are conducted.
Life:
In the north lie the great glittering towers of the Inlect cities. They are highly uniform, with a few major differences to give the cities identity. Each city is filled with parks, museums, music halls, libraries, and observatories. The city is highly automaton run, with robotic street cleaners patrolling around the cities, and computerized information stations everywhere. There are no trashcans that sit around and fester. People simply drop their trash into disposal cylinders that lead to a giant conveyor system far beneath the city. The conveyor system then moves the trash to the local processing plant where it is recycled or melted down into it component atoms. A similar process is done with human and toxic waste. Each city has a corps of highly trained (and highly paid) maintenance workers that with there robotic assistance, will travel around the cities and repair whatever needs to be repaired. Inlects do work for livings, they help maintain the working order of the city and assist each other in better their lives. Becoming a teacher is an extremely respected job in the northern cities. There is no racism or unjustified hate in the Inlect cities. The capital, Ianopolis, is the largest northern city.
Now we travel southward, through the great swampy forests that divide the two halves of the nation. The Other’s social farms are very isolated from one another, and they rarely come in contact. Most everything on the social farms focuses around the agrarian lifestyle. The largest city of the southern social farm collective is Dis. It was the site of the 1983 “Bubble Gum Riots” when a group of disgruntled farmers tried to overthrow the regional governor and break away from the Jacobist state.
Along the coasts lie many small fishing communities, these are mostly Inlect cities, but there is some mixing in the towns in the south.
Military:
When you turn 18, whether you are an Inlect or an Other, you must join the military. Others are sent through basic training and then sent back to their homes. When necessary they will be called up to act as militia. Inlects can take the militia option or go full time military. (A recent change has allowed Others to also become full time military, but still only Inlects can become officers.) The military of the Dominion is highly advanced, making up for what they lack in numbers in tactical skill and technology. Members of the militia are called up every so often for additional training.
Geography:
The Dominion is effectively a huge island. Terrain in the north is mountainous and somewhat cool (snow in the higher elevations). The nation is spilt in half by a large forest full of rivers and swamps. There is only one major road through the woods, called the Golden Way, and traffic on it is highly monitored. The southern lands are flat, warm, and fertile, with some ridges and knobs for Others to vacation to. The rest of the island is ringed in coastal plains and seaside cliffs. During times of war, most invasion fleets will land in the flatter southern regions. Taking note of this, most of the Dominions military bases are built in the south, and the southern entrance to the Golden Way is guarded by elite armor units.
The Misfortuned:
People with mental or physical handicaps are not shunned in this society. Several specialized cities, with advance medical care facilities where built just for them. Originally a majority of the people called for euthanasia, but it was deemed too barbaric. There are three major cities for the Misfortuned, one located in the northern regions, one in the southern regions, and one isolated deep within the barrier forest for those of extreme insanity.
You see, we are jsut a happy little collection of people.
