The Do It Yourself Tech & Tech FAQs thread

Personally I'm kind of tired of fishing through tons of threads to find a few discussing how to make tech and use tech, so I thought I'd make an index to help myself and others.

For your Reference:
Some info on naval vessels (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=94873): Clan Smoke Jaguar's guide to Naval Vessels

Spacetech: Orbital Mechanics (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=68977): A helpful discussion of orbits and how spacecraft are affected by physics.

Some things you should know about tanks (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88484): Clan Smoke Jaguar's Guide to Tanks

Enter the laboratory... Creating Stuff:
Making a GOOD assault rifle... (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108858): Archaic Slang Words' Guide to creating an original realistic guns.

Santa Barbara's Great Big Guide to Designing Spaceships (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=118593): Santa Barbara explains how to build a military starship and transform your home garage into a veritable Utopia Planitia.

The unveiling, with flashing cameras!:
Making your own crap (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108845): Raysia's Guide to creating pictures of your creations.

Some info on military equipment pricing (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86861): Clan Smoke Jaguar's Guide to determining the cost of your creations.

Advancing on the Storefront:
Why storefront sales don't equal huge budgets (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=80256): Soviet Haaregrad's lecture on why can't spend that eighty billion dollars that you got from selling tanks in your storefront.

Problems with Storefronts: Why they are STUPID (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=104971): New Genoa's Lecture on why he doesn't like storefronts, and why he feels that they are unrealistic. The rest of the thread is a very good discussion of storefronts in general, pay special attention to Western Asia's post on the first page.

---
Let me know if there are any other threads discussing tech and I'll update this list, post haste...

I should emphasise the ridiculous stupidity of tech-copyrights in NS, and frankly I don't think we should encourage n00bs to use it.

I don't like the idea of the Pa©t ether, but I feel they should be included here since they are connected with Tech creation.

If anyone else thinks that they should be removed, I will gladly remove them.

I doubt that anyone would go through the trouble to check anyway, so you might as well.

I'd like to agree on a qualification of Menel's statement:

I think that we shouldn't encourage n00bs to 'copyright' items with that group...and people should not mistake copyrights for patents.

It is good to have some realism (ie, just because one person develops and sells a certain configuration and type of weapon doesn't mean that others can also do the same), but the copyright program connected to the "©opyrighting" is simply to be ignored. Why? Because the copyrights are granted without any attempt to verify the authority or veracity of the claims made...and often the claims are simply on pre-existing RL weapons systems (or imagined systems with stats that some fan of a tech series has worked to develop, where that fan is not the person making the claims).

Patents to innovative designs and design features should be granted, but they should also eventually expire as RL patents do...but I'm not willing to do this and I don't trust most people on NS to do it honestly.

OOC: The whole "copyright" idea or thread was to create a sense of realism to the NS universe. Certainly Camdean doesn't run a patent office and, quite frankly, copyrighting a MiG is ridiculous. But perhaps new, creative, and innovative designs can be copyrighted.

Again, the real problem is enforcement of said copyrights and RL nations don't "go to war" over copyright infrigements. At the very most, some kind of trade embargo (minus the warships) is enacted.

Heh; I decided long ago to ignore copyright claims on the basis that I've never signed any treaty, or joined any orginization, that would requior me to do such, and thus can't be expected to hold myself to rules made by others.

Mind you, my almost universal use of my own technology and designs has ment that it's never been an issue, but the point stands.
