You know, I'd much rather RP a fantasy sport than most of the sports RP that happen here. At least then there'd be something interesting independent of the actual posts (which are of varying quality, usually garbage).
We're on soccer World Cup Ten, and I've yet to see a GOOD one. A couple have been decent, but most have been the equivalent of nukefests.
I'm guilty of coming up with these ideas as well - I tried to set up the original cricket world championship before abandoning the idea. And though it's nice to see hockey and rugby get a look-in, making any quality of post where you have three second to work with...it's impossible. And some guy just posting results and no background is dull.
The best idea for this kind of thing would be for a GM to set up the cup, with a restricted number of players, either based on real life countries/teams or NS world ones. The players then post non-match RPs, make potted biographies of their squad and write summaries of domestic matches.
The GM then uses these to gain, as well as country info (state of technology, money allocated to sport, population), and decides winners for matches. He then writes a decent-length "post" (maybe 5 paragraphs, 25 lines or so) for each match, summarizing, describing, etc.
My 17 yen.
