Map Making (OOC Request)

22-12-2003, 17:08
Alright, I am seeing people with these great maps of thier nations, the question I ask is...how are you doing it? I never have needed it, but I think my new nation does. I never really needed one for my old nation. Also, any tips on how to make one?

Also, are there any other useful programs for this game? I already have DOGA (think that is what it is called) for making tanks and planes etc. Anything else you suggest?

Well, I used to make my maps in Flash 5, which was good for a while until I learned how to use Photoshop. Basically all you have to do in Photoshop is learn how to manipulate shapes, and then you can make a map.

Thanks, thanks a lot. I do not have photshop, so I am going to see if I can download a trial version.

Once I create a map, where do you think I should go and host it?

Thanks a lot. Do any of you have a map for your nation, so that I can use that as an example of what I am aiming for? Because I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to these things, I try to think I try my best at these things.

I haven't done a map of my nation yet - as I'm still feeling my way through the initial stages of the game - but in my real life rpg incarnation (as it were) I use Campaign Cartographer, a specialised map making program. Visit www.profantasy.com to learn more (I'm not an employee, just a user, so please forgive the plug).

I like to think I did a pretty good job, just using paint!

Sorry for the size...

No problem, I think I will use paint myself as Photoshop seems slightly too complex for me! :)

Paint is a quite more powerfull tool than you may think. I've made these maps using it (since I'm not very skilled with more professional drawing programs).

Of course, if you play Civilization III you can use the Civ III Map Editor to create a map with physical features, then add an overlay marking in borders, cities etc. - as I did with my neighbouring states, Angry Cavies and Small Rodents. This is the result:

That first one is very impressive, especially considering that it was made with Paint!

More OCC: I bought that and it got some virus into my laptop, supposedly, and I needed to buy a new one :(

I made a city map using SimCity 2000 once. It was a rousing success, but it was too much trouble to make to be worth anything.

Ok, using Civ III kicks butt. One of my favorite map-making resources for you artistic types is located here: http://www.zompist.com/howto2.htm - that is a nice, a very nice tutorial on making a killer-looking map.

No, I'm on a Mac - they never brought out PTW for Mac, I expect they've skipped it for Conquests - fingers crossed!

But even if you only have the basic Civ III, you can download the Map Editor free from their site: http://www.civ3.com/
