Honestly, i really dont know. But the method i used was that i looked at how many people i had in my nation: Aprox. 135million.
So if a nation had 135million people, at least 5 million could be in the military service...but i don't want to be a "godmodding über nation" so i think i have about 1,5 million men in my army...but i'm not sure about that.

Well, that depends on how militaristic you are. For example Sebytania has about 35 million soldiers or so... Some nations bigger than me have much smaller military, some nations smaller than me have a bigger military.

Right.
The general rule of thumb[ and coincidently the way not to be mass ignored :roll: ]is to have an absoloute maximum of 5% of your population enlisted into the military. This includes seamen, pilots, logistsics teams and of course, your soldiers.
So, with a population of
771,000,000 people
You could Have a maximum military personel size of
38550000 people
Thats 5% of your population.
But don't think you can just smack 38 million soldiers onto a battlefield, a lot of that number are The behind The Scenes Guys Intelligence, logistsics [thats getting food and ammunition to the front lines], and of course for every tank you need 4-6 men...
The list goes on, but I would suggest a military size of 25->35 million, preferably somewhere in the middle.
You may Choose to ignore this advice at any time, but do so at your won risk

Although most nations, during peacetime and anything less than a war for their very survival try to go by the 1% rule.

The rule of thumb is that a nation during war-time can have 5% of their population in their military (although a big slice of them will be in reserve). During peace-time, the figure is around 2-3% of your population.....

You just decide for yourself. For Example;
You have a maximum force of 30,000,000
You could split it like this, or anyway you want,
Army, including Tanks and Artiller Corps=15,000,000
Naval Crews=7,500,000
Air Crews=7,500,000
Then if you want you can tanke it a little further;
Army, 15,000,000
Light Infantry Corps, 5,000,000
Heavy Infantry Corps, 5,000,000
Logistics Crews, 5,000,000
And If your fealing really adventurous even further;
Army, 15,000,000
Light Infantry Corps, 5,000,000
-1st Light Infantry Division,2,500,000
--1st Light Infantry Brigade, 1,250,000
--2nd Light Infantry Brigade, 1,250,000
-2nd Light Infantry Division, 2,500,000
--3rd Light Infantry Brigade, 1,250,000
--4th Light Infantry Brigade, 1,250,000
Heavy Infantry Corps...
Dont Know if I'v been any help at all, like to think I have, but now i have to go continue typing my military in. Take a look if you need any more help breaking down your military. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100386&highlight=)
