New York One News:
"...a protestor was shot today by the NYPD during a march on the capitol building..."
Federal Republic News Network:
"...scattered reports of looting in several neighborhoods of Queens have been reported. The mayor has called for all police, fire and EMS personnel not on sick leave to report to their respective commands for duty assignments..."
Sky Eye News:
"...fires burn at the moment in Jamacia,Queens. FDNY units are unable to get to the fires as rioters have caused the area to become dangerous..."
MSNBC News:
"..talks of New York's governor has been asked to deploy the national guard to rioting areas. Confirmed is a state of martial law is being imposed on NYC tonight as rioters..."
It began with an announcement by the government to discontinue bussing students from other neighborhoods to ones with better schools. Leaders of minority communities disliked the idea and called for protests. It was at one of these protests that cops and protestors clashed. It wasnt sure who started what, and nothing would be truely known until after the riots. All that was known after that day was a white cop had shot a black protestor. Citing hundreds of years of injustice several communities in Queens where the police had always had a difficult time maintaining law and order began to break down and riot.
From news helicopters above a lot of the rioting was caught on video tape. It was to the point where the looters trashed a hospital and overturned an ambulance. The response was slow but large. The municiple police force of 80,000 was called into action. The 12 tanks of the Federal Republic Police Department were also called up into service. However it would be impossible and outright dangerous to deploy the entire police force into the areas with rioting as it would leave sections of the city without any police protection.
To each of the three neighborhoods however cops went in by the hundreds. Dressed in riot gear they launched tear gas canisters and were promptly met with bricks and bottles that smashed against riot shields. The point of lethal force had not yet been reached but it was close at hand. Especially with the mayor calling for the govenor to send in National Guard units to assist in the quelling of the riot. The NYPD had to deal with crowds that outnumbered the riot cops almost 6 to 1 in one of the three neighborhoods. And only time would tell if the riots would expand further.
