OOC: I'm closing in on one billion. To answer the question of wheter you population can grow faster, an early nation of mine (This was originally a puppet, but I grew to like it more than the original.) named Driddain was started earlier than my friend's nation Mercenary Soldiers. Somehow, Mercenary Soldiers hit the one billion mark before Driddain did.

Note to Mods: Is this a common bug?

Dunno, 1.7, 1.8 billion (I'm too lazy to check at the moment). This is my largest, I have several billion+ puppets (the smallest being mid-april), and a new nation around 20 million.
You can make them speed up or slow down slightly, it depends on how many issues you answer and get.
There was, and possibly still is (though I think it's been fixed) a population bug, which gave you issues twice as fast, therefore making you grow twice as fast. There was also a less common variant of it which made you cease growing entirely. However, both these bugs could be fixed by the mods, and I think they've been removed entirely by the new versions of NS (as in version 1.6/1.7, not NS2).
However, you can also temporarily stop your growth by having your economy implode (note: If you don't want this to happen, don't outlaw capitalism. I did this in a puppet which was around the same size as this nation, and it's growth was severely halted while the economy disappeared)

I remember when I started NS that nations over 1 b were very rare - they definately were not very active on the forums by the time they reached that age. That has changed in the last few months, as the poll suggests.
