The CACE nations located in Aperin today unveiled ambitious plans to link many of the continent's major cities via a high speed Maglev (magnetic levitation) rail link.

It is anticiapted that the new Maglev trains will cruise at a maximum speed of about 600 km/h and an average speed of 420 km/h and be able to complete the journey between Glasburgh in Celdonia and SeOCC Metro, a distance of 3742 km, in under nine hours.

The program has been announced as part of a pan-continental strategy of moving away from high pollution forms of transport, such as flying, and is intended to compliment the existing rail network that links Aperin.

The project has recieved government support from Xikuang, Anhierarch, SeOCC, and Celdonia, whilst others are expected to follow in the near future.

The Vortex Corporation congratulates the nations of CACE with this new initiative. Every day, we stand astounished at the performance of your organization, which seems to be able to free money and time for such projects despite rumours of food shortages and the like.

If any help is needed, though we doubt it will, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our land will maybe like the idea of having a highspeed rail link. I go talk to them.

Yes indeed, it is amazing what one frightening, one all-consuming and two powerhouse economies can achieve these days is it not.

As to your fears of a food shortage in Aperin, please allow me to reassure you that no such situation exists. Although some nations, such as Celdonia, have rather small agricultural sectors we are well provided for by our trade partners in CACE and IFTA.

We thank you for your compliments.

Still faster to fly jets...

Yes it is. But flying is a horrible way to travel when you have to do it all the time - getting to the airport, checkin queues, hanging around in airports, delays, more hanging around in airports, cursing the fact that you had fly over France when their air traffic controllers are on strike, waiting for luggage at the other end and hoping it turns up in one piece, getting from the airport to where you want to go.....

Nah, there's a lot to commend a reliable high speed train service.

Actually, those are pretty much my OOC thoughts on flying anyway. Fun the first few times, but a frag when you have to do it all the time.

OOC: Vortex, they ration food. They did cut rations last time when they evacuated 300 million people.

OOCly, some of us would find it difficult to sustain ourselves (based on poor rankings in the UN Agriculture report we've decided to incorporate into the RP of our nations) but collectively we get by.

We might not have loads to spare, but we're not starving.

If you ever have shortages, consider trading outside CACE with me

Add to this, in many instances it's actually faster to travel by train because of long transit time to and from airports, plus the possible delaus. It's faster to travel from Paris to Marseilles with the TGV than it's by the aeroplane (since the trainstation are in the middle of the city), and the maglev is much faster than the TGV.

The peoples of Sacco and Vanzetti are delighted to announce the commencement of the construction of a Maglev rail link between our two main cities.

This has been made possible by colleagues from CACE who have happily supplied expertise, technology and even help with the construction.

Without the exchange of resources made possible through CACE trading agreements the development of such an advanced and efficient system would not have been possible so quickly.

Feasts and festivals throughout the islands are celebrating the success of co-operation over competition.

Although the Huxley-on-Sea to Passionara Link Line is tiny compared to the continental link plans, it is a significant leap forward within Sacco and Vanzetti.

We congratulate the nations of Aperin on choosing this environmentally responsible form of mass transportation. We have found the Maglev line connecting our major cities with Oglethorpia to be a great boon to the people, and we're sure that Aperin will find Maglev transport to be of great benefit too.

OOC: On the hassles of air travel, that why you do what I do...get a private pilots licsense. Sure my little plane cant take me as far as a 777 as fast....but a 777 cant do a barrel role...

IC:

The ministry of trasnportation would congratulate you only if they knew what a maglev was. You say its a train, yet our trains polute just as much as any other. We also find them unreliable, as they are far to susceptable to a military attack.

OOC2: You also should know that Kajiraki uses WWII tech, that might make the above amke more sense.

The Ministry of Urban Affairs looks forward to the completion of the project, and we have made available all necessary resources to complete the necessary stations in SeOCC to link us to this network. The MoE has estimated that this network, once adapted to carry freight, will cut transport costs across Aperin by as much as 15% for many goods, greatly reducing the resources needed for trade among Aperin nations.

ooc: a note re: food shortages, most of us have small agriculture sectors so we RP having to import food. there have never been shortages per se; rationing was done to give SeOCC extra food when we evacuated, and i think only by Free Socialism. for my part i fed my people canned tuna for two weeks while they were away.

Sky above Aperin

The weather was clear that afternoon, and anyone who would have looked up at the sky would have noted a small light reflecting the sunlight down upon the earth...

MILSAT DOSa, in orbit for 146 days, made it's routine spin over the continent exactly on time...

((OOC: What I'm really looking for, if it isn't already public information, is the capacity of these railways. Are they specifically designed for Aperin or is it a 'standard' railway design?

To be blunt, this is what military intelligence would be looking for:
-Can it be used to ferry tanks, artillery, etc across great distances quickly? Or would those be too big?
-What would be it's top infantry/population ferrying capacity in case of emergencies?
And finally (which should be visible from track width) can coaches from other nations be adapted to be used on that system?))

The Dominion of Kanuckistan would like to congradulate all parties involved and offer our wishes for sucess in this and future endevors.

We are wondering if this will be a surface or subsurface system; we've had great sucess at maximising subterranian train systems through the use of reduced-pressure tunnel environs to minimise air-resistance and allow for higher travel speeds.

*A descrete aside is made by the Ministry of Trade regauding the possibility of helping to expand access to food supplies rumored to be limited within the nations allied in this undertaking*

OOC: Well, if you'd ever like to bolster your food supplies and expand trade ties, Beef-Based Agriculture is one of the second-largest industries in my +2billion-strong Frightening economy.

We in the Serene Socialist Republic of Xikuang are very pleased to be taking part in such an ambitious project. Indeed, it is particularly ambitious for us, as Xikuang's terrain is for the most part unsuitable for maglev trains, being simply far too mountainous. Research and development groups have been assessing the feasibility of massive tunneling projects through the Eastern provinces, and our people are working closely with those of our immediate neighbours and First Outside towards the development of combination trains that can make use both of standard rail lines and the maglev tracks. We are also exploring the possibilities for incorporating some of our funicular overland lines. Much of the high-speed railway is simply going to have to go around Xikuang, but we hope to have our major cities connected in line for projected completion dates.

[ooc: We provide the continent with scads and scads of food. Top 2 or 3% in the world for agrisector. ]

The Socialist Commonwealth of Anhierarch is proud to be a part of this project, and eagerly anticipates its completion. The benefits that stand to be reaped from such a transportation network cover many areas, from simple reduction of shipping costs to facillitate efficient and cost effective trade, to convenient and accessible trans-continental travel. We forsee that this network will serve to bring our peoples closer, and to forge ever stronger relations.

The Bureaucratic States wishes the best to the nations of Aperin concerning the proposed magnetic levitation connection. Maglev lines have served our own nation magnificiently in moving goods and citizens around the nation.

The best of luck in this endeavour, and all those to come!

On behalf of the nations involved in this ambitious project I send our thanks for your kind support.

Celdonian Minister of Transport.

Knootoss> The project has only been announced so at the moment you wont actually see anything. Given the fluid nature of NS time let's assume the network will be built over the next few weeks or so in real time.

The network is designed to provide high speed access between the major cities of the nations involved, both for passengers and freight. I'm pretty sure you can currently transport tanks by rail, and any decent rail system should be able to transport a lot of troops around. There's nothing to suggest that this rail network is anything other than what we say it is, although I suppose it will mean we can transport such things around faster than at present.

It'll look much like any other Maglev system.
