We wish to challenge your new defense system.

How about this: We send a group of UCAVs, say 9 of them, over to your nation. If you can stop them with only your MADAE system, then we will give you 5 Billion dollars :) If not, well, then you might consider spending your government spending elsewhere...

The HMMWVs rode on snow clouds as they moved through the Restricted Zone, loaded with domestic and international observers. They slid slightly in the white powder as they barrelled along. The road they were on was guarded by patrols of soldiers and vehicles, and signs warned of minefields just to the sides. Above, gunships and fighters circled, and the clear blue sky glowed in the cold air. In the passenger seat of the lead HMMWV, General Cross glanced back to his three guests. "So, it's secure?"

Director Kerrik, riding there with the otehr officers, replied, "Yes, General. My men are everywhere." The vehicles approached the imposing building on the horizon.

Situated in the rolling plains of Artems, one of the central islands, a large tarp was drawn over a lumpy form that stretched for almost a kilometer in diameter. Beyond that tarp were barracks, airstrips, and vehicle bays, all partially or almost totally subteranean. Radar signals scrambled, IR was blinded by the constant random strobing of heat pulsars located throughout the region. Jamming flooded satellite channels. And the cold white sun beat down on glistening snow and shining metal. A frigid breeze ripped the air, and techs on the airfield pulled their parkas closer.

The HMMWVs entered the inner perimeter, the last of twenty, and the huge concrete and steel wall rose back from the ground to block the road again. The vehicles stopped and unloaded as nearby, UAVs were taking to the skies, and soldiers bustled about. A Lt. General saluted them, "Ladies and Gentlemen..." the tarp was cut loose, and the wind ripped it away. The huge sheet billowed away, revealing the MADAE, its guns depressed, its systems still. With a roar, the guns climbed, the subsystems activated. "Welcome to the MADAE."

The General, his nametag read "Regilon" pointed to the closest airstrip. "We're putting up Predators, Cyphers, and Global Hawks, plus Ravens... those are stealth, and Reapers, which are low attack vehicles, and Whirlwinds, which are fast and agile. These are being scrambled around the nation, and are moving out on random flight patterns. The pilots flying them by remote have been informed that should they keep their UAV intact, they will be pensioned 200 Million Credits and can retire. So, they really want to win." Regilon shivered a little, pointed to the bulky screens set up in an arc near the MADAE east sensor platform. "Those screens are EMP shielded, just like the rest of this system. They are showing camera views of the UAVs, plus real time images from ground cams and satellites over the country. That man-" he pointed to a soldier with a camera, "is filming the system itself during this operation."

A voice rang out through the PA system, "Ten minutes until MADAE test commences."

Regilon grinned in the harsh cold as he handed out goggles and ear covers. "Cover up good, and remember to turn off all elctronics, or we'll turn 'em off!" he pointed to the huge mag-coil base of the nearest cannon.

Someone whistled, "What's the scale of that thing?"

"The gun?" He smiled again, "It's about forty meters long."

There was a stunned silence, and people hurried to get protection on.

"Nine minutes..."

OOC: Holy shiz! It's like Jurassic Park!

ICC: Dr. Gary Anders, from the Dodekistan Research Institute turned to his companion, Lt. Col. Mike Dodge from the Dodekistan National Air Force.

"Oh my God, colonel, look at the SIZE of that thing!"

"I'd say he was compensating for something, but then I'm afraid he'd fire on of those big guns at us!"

Colonel Hunin, General Mouser, and Doctor Grubb stood staring at the massiveness that was the MADAE

“I sure hope the chancellor never pisses the leaders here off…..” muttered the General as they stared blankly at one of the guns

"Test commencing."

The guns of the MADAE began to hum and crackle. The ground seemed to pulse beneath their feet, and their hair began to stand on end. If anyone had held a compass, it would have spun out of control. Across Kaukolastan, the BattleNet activated. Radar swept the sky, IR panned about, and optical sensors waited. Abnormalities were calculated, coordinated. The MADAE's targetting system identified fifty-four UAVs in less than five milliseconds. The guns began to swing into alignment, the base ring rotating them into optimal positions. The hum built to a deafening thrum that seemed to shake everyone's chests, and the energy rose in the air.

Inside the MADAE, the calculations were set, the appropriate tonnage selected and loaded, spitting up from the arsenals to the chambers of the eight exterior guns. The rounds paused in the loading process as the generators charged their capacitors, then were slammed into the firing chambers. The coils were charged. At thirteen milliseconds after acquisition, the guns were ready.

The MADAE fired.

It was a sequence of shots that blossomed in all directions. The tremendous guns roared back in their cradles with sudden motion. At each barrel, a blast of white light erupted, and would have blinded any uncovered eyes. The shells screamed out of the barrels at four thousand m/s, and they tore the air as they launched. With the EM discharge, any unshielded electronics died within four klicks of the MADAE. The eight concussions shook the earth, hurling down one of the "stable" screens, and pitching the observers into the snow. The heat melted the snow around the gun emplacements, and there were visible wavering heat lines in the air.

Along the horizon, there was a series of explosions. Each was the same. The magnetic fields, charged by the capacitor in the shell, compressed the Deutrium/Tritium mixture. Then, the ion beam, powered by the amplifying coil, fired into the mix. Under the heat and pressure, the hydrogen fused. Pure white balls erupted in the air. The heat incinerated anything within two hundred meters. The the shockwave struck, blasting out in a translucent bubble of compression that ripped everything to shreds within five hundred meters. And then, the air collapsed on itself from the vacuum, pulling the debris back in itself, the bubble imploding. All that remained when it faded was ash and rain.

In that barrage, every targetted craft died. People in the cities safely below watched in wonder as the display rocked the heavens. All of this was in four seconds from firing. And within another second of that, the MADAE was reloaded. After an additional two seconds, the stealth craft were located by optics, satellites, and cell tower refraction. The MADAE fired again.

The thunder faded, and Cross looked at his old, mechanical watch. "Fifteen seconds."

The doctor from the TSD lay on the ground, quivering and curled into the fetal position, afraid the man may wet himself or vomit, General Mouser and Colonel Hunin stepped away from him.

“Mein Gott im Himmel, asche zu asche“ muttered the General as he made the Sign of the Cross “My God save the souls of any pilot who ventures into that things fire range!”

“Indeed General” repeated a somber Colonel Hunin, looking at his watched….and seeing the blank display “Well fuck” he sighed

The convoy headed into one of the bunkers, where the soldiers and technicians were celebrating. They disembarked again in the mess hall, where a banquet had been prepared for the delegations and the crew of the MADAE, or at least seven hundred of them.

As they sat there, General Cross discussed the MADAE's capabilities and weaknesses, "...you saw the Tactical One KT round. We also have up to the strategic One-Thirty MT round, which will sweep the skies for two hundred klicks, but that's considered WMD and only released by Presidential order. Also, any round over three KT begins to show significant EMP results, about double the range of the shock wave."

An Airforce general commented, "However, while this would be invincible overseas or in low population areas, we are worried about a low and fast attack on our islands. We couldn't use the MADAE without fear of vaping our own cities if we tried to shoot down low planes." He shrugged, "The supercomputers can target planes at five hundred feet and above by detonating over them and smacking them with the shock, but below that, the shockwave touches ground. We could EMP them out, but that would need bigger warheads."

Cross grunted. "Besides, if any plane is so nice as to drop below five hundred, our boys will shred them with stingers, AA, and small arms."

The general turns back to the two Colonels he was speaking with

"If you'll excuse me, gentlemen"

He stoo up and walked to stand behind the RDF delegation and listened to the exchange

Dr. Anders sat down across from the Lt. Col.

"How's the chicken, colonel?"

"It's delicious. Look, if someone wanted to take that thing out, how would they do it?"

"Well, with Athena it can't be locked on by radar, infrared. I guess you'd have to use dumb bombs or GPS if you are heavily encrypted. But you'd have to come in low and fast, or that gun would get you. And of course don't forget about the AA. I'd say it's impossible to attack through the air."

"What if you sent in drones to get the guns to fire, and then, once we get them, of course, send in our hypersonic bombers while the guns are reloading. It would be suicide for the bombers, but we'd hit the guns."

"That, or someone could do the same thing with ICBM's in the air. The two imminent threats would confuse the computer, possibly firing at the wrong thing, but either way the guns would get bombed."

"Good point. Since these guns are covering our airspace too, we should probably let them know of our ideas," Col. Dodge said. The two got up and walked over to the table where General Cross was seated.

"General, can we have a word?"

Cross glanced back at the two new arrivals, "Shoot." he asked in his drawl. He stepped aside with them. "Watcha got?"
18-12-2003, 05:47
"We think we've figured out a weakness in your system. Not sure if you all have thought about this. But if you had multiple threats, say, a flight of high speed, high altitude bombers and an ICBM barrage, and they were timed just right, one of them could act as a distraction to the guns, and the othe could hit while they were reloading. It might also confuse the computer into indecision, or worse, miscalculation."

"Yeah, we figured since you're covering our sky too, we should probably let you know of this so you could make some changes if you thing they are necessary."

OOC: I would have wanted one of my witnesses to this, but since i was too late, let's just put a spy plane into the mix.......but i don't want any diplomatic troubles, i just want to make known my intention to research a counter for this technology.

IC: Unknown to any in the vicinity, a GU SR-72 Blackbird II was around, far away from the test site, high and far enough to not be affected by anything the guns could throw. Still, they were not in visual range, and so the Blackbird II was hooked up to a satellite uplink, which was overlooking the site.

Then came the flashes.

"Holy @$&^#......." the Blackbird pilot swore. "Did you get that?" he said to his communications officer.

"Positive, visuals as well as satellite overheads."

"All right, let's scoot before anyone sees us."

With that, the Blackbird II flew homewards.........

12 hours later:

King Louis was summoned to the War Room with a meeting with his Defence Minister Grabowski, with the intel from the Blackbird sent to gather info from the test.

"This is troubling," King Louis observed.

"Indeed, sire. With this, any nation who can afford this could potentially defeat the whole of the GUAF, and we all know that the GUAF comprises about the main defense forces of our island nation." Grabowski was sweating. Such a dangerous weapon........

"Don't we have a counter to this?"

"Not really. The Warriorhawk won't last, they can be detected. Neither would any of our bombers make it. We can try GBUs or tactical nukes with the F-118, but it's still risky. Although, the weapon is vulnerable to low-altitude strikes, but we know what Stingers and flak would do about that."

Louis, troubled by this, pondered. As length he spoke.

"What about our experimental Aurora supersonic bomber? Could it deal with this?"

"Well.......", now why hadn't he thought of that, Grabowski thought, "well, actually, yeah. But it's still experimental....."
"Just say whether it can."
"Well, the Aurora could survive a low-altitude strike, at its speed on its bombing runs, almost nothing can hit it. That's from the preliminary tests anyway."
"Good. I hereby double the budget for the Aurora experiment. Roll it out as soon as you can." With that, King Louis left.

OOC: I don't want a war, i just want to make sure my assets are not compromised........

Speaking for Kstan, not a puppet

Its fine, you're spyplane interaction is allowedable...though unliely considering the way we police our region, but, no big deal, no war will come to you :)

Ill tell you OOC the weakness of this facility.

High Spped bobmers, dont work, because of the effective range of the gun is at least 200 or 300 kilometers, so we'll see it, and fir,e befoe it makes it in, however, Low flying HSB's WILL work if you do this

Each Directorate nation has 1 or moew relay stations in it, to transmit data to help fire control fire accurately, its possible to knock out a relay station, and then use fast low flying aricraft to knock out MADAE, but, this is a kilometer long disc, and these guns are huge,...unless you use nuclear weapons, you would most likely not be able to knock out all of the guns in one try. The MADAE facility is defended by a garrasion of troops, its ony airbas,e and any Directorate airbase iwthin range has orders to respound. You're death tool WILL be high, should this attack be attempted, but it IS possible.

There really is no way to "counter" a nuclear weapon being detonated in front of your face...so to speak....since partical sheild and the like do not fall under this tech, so, the only way to counter MADAE is to be UNDER its effective firing level, 500 ft, (and at that heights, normal AAA wuld tear you up, or commence the afforemention attack

Remmeber you cant use "know" this information IC without discovering it IC
